DNA cousins...

This icon, found via Google search, is useful to attach to a cousin in your tree to show a DNA match. With unknown DNA cousins, I usually start with a private research tree on Ancestry. You can make the tree private and not searchable in settings. Once I have built out a DNA cousin’s tree far back & out enough, to where I have managed to link them back to my tree, I add their branch & attach this DNA image as their profile picture. I also add the cM & and any information that’s useful such as the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) and shared matches in the facts under DNA match. This allows me to easily see a DNA cousin in my tree. I sometimes use other icons to link various DNA cousins to a common ancestor if I am working on an unknown DNA match such as an NPE. I’ll make a separate post on that process.

These two images I found via Google search as well have been useful to map out where a DNA cousin eventually links back to a common ancestor (MRCA) when working with unknown lineages & NPE’s. By adding shared matches to a general DNA research tree in Ancestry, you eventually see a pattern. Work from the closest matches as possible & add their shared matches. The Leeds Method is also useful in creating clusters or groups of DNA matches that may link to a specific great grandparent.

An example of using the DNA tree image in my Ancestry family tree. This DNA cousin matched me & my father. There were also shared matches to cousins who I had confirmed on the Flynn line already so I knew this was on my father’s maternal line. Luckily this cousin answered my messages & explained their father was a Rice - brother of my father’s maternal granny. If I had not received a reply, I would’ve had to look at the shared matches, build a private research tree & eventually work it out using birth, marriage, census records. Unusual names help as well as if they have known cousin matches with good trees. The DNA Painter Shared cM Tool is useful to work out general relationships as AncestryDNA gives a broad estimate. Uploading your raw DNA to other sites like GEDmatch, MyHeritage & FtDNA is a must in looking for more matches. These sites have great tools to play with as well as GEDmatch & FtDNA having emails to contact your matches direct! This DNA cousin matched my father at 557cM which worked out to be a 1C1R.
