11 - 12 May, 2024
1st week at my placement, it was tiring and really rough on my feet mostly because of my shoes. i did get new ones for my next shift.
I was mostly at the kiosks helping passengers with their check ins and bag tags. Later on, i was asked if i could help in the baggage drop-offs and at the counters and did some shadow on my colleague to learn more about the Amadeus system. Everyone was really friendly and loved the 1st week everything went smoothly and easily. Hoping for an even better 2nd week!.

This week I had the opportunity to go to the boarding gates.
Although I do not have my RAIC yet, Dnata staff were able to get me a daily pass to go through security. They showed me the aircraft and how the process is to board passengers. I helped with a full flight to Cancun where many of the passengers' carry-ons had to be checked-in because the flight attendant in charge said there were not enough space in the cabin for all the bags. It was a new and exciting experience to me.
I did an interview to work with Dnata, and although I did not get accepted; I feel like it was helpful to improve my interview skills.
I met new colleagues and one of the principals managers of Dnata.
It was a week of new challenges and nourishment for my career.

My 4th shift! ☺️ (Also my make-up shift for May 27th)
I learned A LOT of new things during this shift. I was also put in different positions at the check-in. At first, we had to sign in for the first time today and everyone thought I was late 😭 but I let them know Ms. Judith allowed me to start at 5AM. I also met new colleagues! They were really nice and they’ve had experience working the evening shifts. We talked about the similarities and differences, RAICs, the flights, as well as the GTA Dnata opportunity we got!
I reaaaaaally liked the new set up/space that we had with the self-serve Baggage Drop-Off. Definitely eased more passengers not having to do the kiosks then line up as well just to drop-off their bag. I also learned (finally 😅) how the wheelchair assistance works. I always just told the passengers to let them know at the counter if they need the wheelchair assistance. It was explained to me by the Team Leader that basically they’d have to let them know because they need to put it on their boarding pass so someone can assist them! Very refreshing to learn new things each shift!
I had to leave about 30 mins earlier as I had a doctor’s appointment but I think this is the best shift I’ve had yet!
P.S. this week was supposed to be the week I hear back from GTA Dnata on whether I’d get the job. I didn’t expect to hear back from them on Monday! I got the offer! 😊💫
Thank you to Ms. Ava Shum, Ms. Judith Macdonald and all the coordinators of this co-op program for this great opportunity! 🫶🏻

Saturday, June 1st, 2024
A full month has gone already! May went by in a flash!
Saturday was the beginning of the month of June and about, I believe, my 5th shift. This shift, though, I was all alone! 😭I checked the schedule like 100 times to check that I wasn't just looking at the wrong date or something, but nope!
Going to the airport, I was so nervous, but as the day went by, it was not bad at all! I started to feel more confident and I think it ultimately benefitted me. Something new about this shift as well was the kiosks they put in front of the counter; they look so nice and modern!
With the picture of the paper I took, that's a new habit I've started doing since my 2nd shift, when one of the Dnata employees gave me a paper that looks similar. Its something I wanted to take the initiative in doing, to know what flights we have today and when passengers can start checking in, along with having to not ask the employees all the time what flights we have - its something I could do by myself, so I do it! And, at the end of the day, its also helping myself, so win-win!
Finally, on this day, I also saw an Azores Airlines/SATA plane out the window, which made me so happy! They're almost always the counters right beside Transat's but I finally got a picture! My parents and the rest of my family are from the small but beautiful Azores islands and having seen a glimpse of the plane really cheered me up.
AND, just as an aside as well, because SATA is almost always there beside us, it really helps me in my goal of speaking more Portuguese 😉😄. When someone asks me where the SATA counter is, I try responding in Portuguese!
I feel I'm improving slowly and steady, but I for sure will continue - I need to have a full conversation (1 of my SMART goals) after all! :)
