Conociendo el arte callejero Los muros tienen la palabra. A SIMILITUD DE LO QUE OCURRE EN EL MUNDO, CON GRAFITEROS QUE AHORA SON UNA LEYENDA QUE SE SOPESA EN MILES DE DÓLARES, COMO BASQUIAT O BANKSY, EN LIMA FLORECE EN LOS MUROS, Y TAMBIÉN EN LOS AIRES, UNA ALEGRE MOVIDA GRAFITERA CUYOS PROTAGONISTAS NO LLEGAN A LOS TREINTA AÑOS. LO QUE EMPEZÓ COMO UN GESTO CONTRACULTURAL DE PROTESTA INFORMAL AHORA ES TODO UN ARTE QUE YA HA LLEGADO A LOS MUSEOS. AQUÍ LA HISTORIA A TODO COLOR DE LA MOVIDA Por: Enrique Sánchez Hernani Los primeros colectivos de grafiteros limeños aparecieron en Monterrico, Barranco y Surco, alrededor de los años 95 y 96. Usando misteriosos seudónimos para evitar ser reconocidos, se llamaban TR (Third Rail, "Tercer riel"), AS (Aerosol 10) y BHC (Bad Habits Crue) y asaltaban cualquier pared con sus firmas y estridentes dibujos. De esa época quedan Pepo, que firma como Naf y DAOE. Ente (cuyo DNI afirma que se llama Joan Jiménez) empezó grafiteando en Comas. Él se dedicó a esto, dice, porque de pequeño escuchaba rap. El asunto era que a su casa llegaban unos muchachos canadienses que ayudaban a construir las casas a los pobladores de Comas, y le fueron regalando casetes con música de Snoop Dogy y Public Enemy, que tenían graffiti en las portadas. Ente se dedicó a copiarlos. Cuando se mudó a Chorrillos las paredes de los terrenos sin construir le sirvieron como pizarras. Por entonces, en Miraflores, todos los viernes, en el anfiteatro del Parque Kennedy, se reunían muchachos que hacían Hip Hop, brakers, grafiteros, raperos y dj. Pero eran reuniones caletas y excluyentes, a las que cualquier chico no entraba. La democratización fue, en parte, gracias a la labor callejera de Naf y a un grafitero que firmaba como Trans. Trans (cuyo nombre real era Ralph, alumno de un colegio inglés limeño) fue un gringo que por entonces se juntaba con una chica que también hacía graffiti y a quien conocían Lady Buku. Ellos, junto a un tal Aquiles y otro Sean, formarían la primera pandilla grafitera limeña, TR. La leyenda urbana dice que Trans, finalmente, fue a parar como soldado a la guerra de Irak. Mandó una foto suya de uniforme y con un fusil recortado a todos sus amigos. LA ONDA HIP HOP Por el 98 también empezó a pintar Pésimo (cuyo nombre de pila es Edwin Higuchi). Él pintaba influido por lo que veía de Trans. En su barrio de Santa Catalina, además, vivían otros dos grafiteros con alguna calle, Cat y Nyet. Edwin, que todavía no era Pésimo, paraba con ellos y pintaba en la calle, aún en el colegio. Luego vino el primer concurso de grafiteros de Miraflores, el 98, en el Estadio Niño Héroe Manuel Bonilla, y allí nació Pésimo. En esa época no había tanta Internet, pero sí una tienda que se llamaba "Mafia", en Caminos del Inca, para skaters, uno de cuyos dueños hacía graffiti. Edwin, que ya era Pésimo, iba por allí a chequear revistas y aprender de aerosoles. Se compró su primera revista a 15 dólares del alma, cuando el dólar pasaba los 3.50 soles. Pero le abrió el mundo grafitero. Cuando se desarrolló el uso del Internet, Ente y Pésimo, y los demás de ese mundo, comenzaron a ver lo que se hacía en otras partes. Pésimo dice que ellos chequeaban Internet, pero para evitar lo hecho, pues buscaban más autenticidad. Ambos se quejan que ahora otros grafiteros más chiquillos lo usen para copiarlos en las paredes limeñas. Ente arguye que cuando ambos empezaron a pintar, la onda era bien competitiva. Ente está de acuerdo en que el graffiti es un arte. Esta la fama la puso el neoyorquino Basquiat. Jean-Michel Basquiat, nacido en Brooklin y de origen haitiano, murió en 1988. Antes se había hecho célebre pintando los vagones del metro y las paredes del SoHO, como un acto de contracultura ligado a las bandas callejeras. Y si ahora el inglés Bansky, cuya verdadera identidad se desconoce por su ubicuidad cuando pinta los lugares más insólitos de Londres, le ha dado su carta de legitimización, no es el único. Gente como Futura 2000 o El Parla suelen vender sus obras en miles de dólares. Y hasta hay bienales internacionales que convocan a grafiteros, como ya pasa en Sao Paulo, y un Día del graffiti. Ente y Pésimo también han sido llamados para exponer junto a pintores formales. Hasta dictaron un curso al aire libre, pared pintarrajeada mediante, en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC-Lima) de Barranco. Para Ente y Pésimo la onda del graffiti es parte de la cultura del Hip Hop. Ambos ahora están involucrados en ese género y en el rap, y se relacionan con gente de todo el mundo que participa de la movida de "los cuatro elementos": graffiti, break dance, dj y mc. Los dj ponen música y hacen scratch y los mc rapean. La cosa llega a tanto en ellos, que hasta tienen un disco de rap, hecho el 2004, donde ambos grafiteros rapean. Y para no ser menos gregarios que otros colectivos, tienen su propio grupo: DMJC (Dedos manchados en la jungla de concreto) donde hay nueve peruanos en tanto los demás viven en distintas partes del mundo. LA MOVIDA ROCKERA Pero todo no es Hip Hop. A los muchachos de Piratas Fumakaka les vacila más el rock. De hecho, empezaron oyendo punk, aunque ahora han ampliado su onda a otros géneros. PF está formado por Seimiek (en su casa le dicen Diego Cornejo), Ioke, Oso y el veterano Naf. Están juntos desde el 2002, pero pintan desde el 97. El colectivo ha trascendido los muros y han avanzado hacia una especie de esperpénticos muñecos, objetos escultóricos, que han colgado sobre alambres en algunas calles de Barranco. Todas sus esculturas están hechas con objetos de desechos. Piratas Fumakaka no solo usan aerosoles. Pintan con todo lo que hallan a mano: látex, acrílicos, crayolas, tiza y hasta han empleado brochas y rodillos de pintor. Incluso pintaban papelógrafos que la gente arrancaba y ellos volvían a repintar encima. Seimiek cree que usar solo sprays te limita. El grupo está unido básicamente por la amistad y porque tienen un grupo de música bizarro: Seimiek toca una "guitarra" que él mismo ha hecho, acompañado de Ioke y un par de músicos más. Salen disfrazados de jirafas, monjes, osos y a veces invitan al público para que cante con ellos. Es una cosa más visual, algo así como un teatro caótico y divertido donde la gente se vacila a sus anchas. Nunca tocan más de dos canciones iguales. Los Fumakaka también han pasado a las salas de arte. Han viajado a exponer en Chile, el 2005, en el Museo de Bellas Artes, o en un festival de Villa María del Triunfo, en el cono sur. No se hacen paltas. La idea, señalan, es divertirse. PEDRO NAVAJA EN PUERTO NUEVO Cuando la banda de los Nole, de la calle Loreto, saltaron a la cruda fama por agarrarse a balazos con Los Malditos de la calle Castilla, del Callao, a algunas autoridades chalacas no se les ocurrió mejor cosa que borrar unos inmensos murales que había por todo el puerto, las "lápidas callejeras", donde un artista de Puerto Nuevo, El Salsa, había pintado unos íconos de los caídos, a pedido. A El Salsa (Alex Villanueva para su partida de nacimiento) de nada le valió ser el ganador del concurso de grafiteros del puerto. Él ya era célebre por haber pintado en el centro mismo de su barrio toda una cuadra con los más bravos soneros que en este mundo son: Héctor Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Maelo, Ismael Miranda, entre otros. El Salsa, a quien le gusta el Hip Hop, pero también la salsa y el reggaeton, dice que lo que él hace es por iniciativa de la gente de su barrio. Es el pincel de sus patas, de su "batería" como se dice hoy. Lo que más cólera le da a El Salsa es que le borraron un celebrado mural de Tego Calderón, el reggaetonero con más flow del momento. Ahora ya no le dan permiso para pintar y está pensando en volver a hacerlo de manera clandestina, como empezaron todos en Lima. Su grupo, el Callao Cartel, alista sprays y brochas. A preparar los muros.

So for the last couple of days I worked super hard on a big mural, in my original home city of Lima, Peru! It was a collabo with my old artist friend @entes93 who got me the wall via his local festival @puro_muro . It was done outside the “Arriola” train station (calle Aviación), which is in “La Victoria”, a gnarly hood I used to brawl at with my street gang, back in the early 90s. The spot we painted at was hectic, but I was well protected and the junkies living under that bridge didn’t mind clearing the area for us to work. So it ended being real fun to drop this fishbomb-esque creature, representing a person riding the dragon train. Hope it brightens the day of the thousands of cars that pass by there every day! 100 Graffiti Artists Create Stunning Pieces of Art on Dorm Before Its Renovation & Result Are Breathtaking [30 Images]

A Hundred artists banded together to breathe some life into the mundane walls of a dormitory in Paris, making them reek of creativity and inspiration.

The white, uninspiring walls of school at most have scribblings on them, words etched by students whose efforts do not go unpunished.

This changed when a dynamic team of artists spent three weeks painting the interior of a student residence at the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris.

The artists were invited there to take part in an urban festival called Rehab 2, to be held for a month, from 16 June to 16 July and they did an amazing job, playing with colors in various visual tales etched on each of the walls.

Because each artist has their own distinct style and flair with their own selection of color palettes and visual elements, the entire exhibit is a collection of fantasy worlds colliding, the one where art enthusiasts would love to get lost in.

The school will undergo renovation before which they are hosting the show, making these graffiti works transient in nature.

While they will be wiped off before the official renovation, photographers have captured their beauty, documenting their artistic efforts, freezing these mesmerizing murals forever.

Upon approach, you’re greeted by the fantastic mural that covers one entire side of the building, done by Conrad Florez + Pesimo Dmjc as part of the Lima Mural Project. This gorgeous piece of art sets the tone for the entire stay at Aloft — enter at street level and take the elevators to the main first floor and you’ll find the large, open, multipurpose rooms that house the Re:mix lounge and restaurant, wxyz bar, Re:fuel snack cafe and work/gathering spaces. These areas are modern with clean lines and pops of color, with a lot of whimsy in the fun accessories placed around, from blue elephants and green alpacas to a trio of “see, hear, speak no evil” monkeys. The main theme of Aloft Lima Miraflores is basically fun.

Service & facilities

Service is informal and low-key, while being very responsive to guest needs and friendly (front-of-house staff all speak English). The entire hotel is tech-forward, with amenities that include the fully-equipped Re:charge fitness center, Splash swimming pool, 24-hour business center, and two even rooms with almost 900 square feet of meeting space. Aloft Lima Miraflores is also pet and family friendly! Camp Aloft provides young guests with a cool rolling duffle bag filled with fun stuff for their stay, and kids will enjoy the pool and billiards table. One dog per room up to 40 pounds is welcome, and the hotel provides an Aloft-branded bed and bowl, plus treats and toys.

Rooms

There are 160 guest rooms and four suites, all decorated in a contemporary loft style with clean, neutral palettes as a backdrop for the bright splashes of color in the furnishings and artwork. One of the best aspects of the rooms is the floor-to-ceiling windows that afford fantastic views of the cityscape, particularly dazzling at night (some even offer ocean views). And they are soundproof, with blackout shades as well, so don’t worry about being disturbed. The SPG Signature Heavenly beds are deep and comfortable, and all rooms come with a workspace and ergonomic chair, coffeemaker, mini-refrigerator, flat-panel television with tons of channels, and spacious bathrooms. There is also complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

Food & drink

Re:mix restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a menu offering a variety of delicious international and Peruvian dishes. Continental breakfast is available from $6 US, with the expansive and delicious buffet from $15. They also offer Grab-n-Go breakfast packs for $5, and guests can access the Re:fuel snack area anytime for quick eats and drinks including wine and beer.

Location

There are two parts of Lima that are the main draws for visitors: the historic city center, and Miraflores. The latter, where Aloft is located, is where most people choose to stay, as it’s modern, beautiful, full of an abundance of shopping and dining options, and stretches along the ocean. Aloft’s location provides easy access to nearby destinations including Barranco, Larcomar and el Malecon de Miraflores. One of my favorite things to do during my stay was to walk down to the Malecon boardwalk to take in the unique shoreline, with the beach filled with surfers and families on one side and dramatic black-rock cliffs leading up to the city on the other. At the same time, you’re a fairly easy taxi or ride-share drive to Plaza de Armas and the historic part of Lima. On-site parking is available for $2.50/hour US.
