common terminology:

daren 大人 (suffix) — gender-neutral honorific often translated as Mr. or Ms. (e.g. Pei-daren = Ms. Pei)

xiao 小 (prefix) — little (e.g. Xiao-Jiu = Little Jiu)

jie/jiejie 姐姐 (suffix) — older sister (e.g. Wen-jiejie)

ge/gege 哥哥 (suffix) — older brother (e.g. Xiao-Zhuo-ge)

didi 弟弟 (suffix) — younger brother (e.g. Bai Jiu-didi) 

“A-” 阿 (prefix) — added before a single character of someone’s name/address, to indicate affection, familiarity, closeness etc (e.g. A-Heng, A-jie)

“er” 儿 (suffix) — added after a single character of someone’s name & is an affectionate term used by someone (often older) whose relationship to them involves some kind of caregiving; can be romantic or platonic (e.g. Wen Xiao’s foster father calling her Xiao’er)

common mistakes:

referring to someone with only one character—in chinese this is generally considered odd (e.g. Zhuo Yichen as “Zhuo”) and is not recommended unless done in-story (e.g. 蜚 Fei’s name just being Fei).

referring to a character by only their surname (e.g. Pei Sijing as “Pei”). chinese names put surnames before given names. (to call her by just her given name, use “Sijing”.)

referring to a character with a 2-character name by only their given name (e.g. Bai Jiu as “Jiu”). since his given name is only 1 character, it can’t be used on its own. using just the given name generally only works with 3-character names (e.g. Zhao Yuanzhou can be referred to as just “Yuanzhou”).

NOTE 1: calling a character by their given name usually implies closeness and informality. generally it is more common among chinese-speakers to use each other’s full names or their surnames combined with a title.

NOTE 2: to call a character by their surname or 1-character given name, you add on a prefix or suffix (e.g. Xiao-Zhuo or Xiao-Chen with Zhuo Yichen, Wen-jiejie or Xiao-jie with Wen Xiao)

NOTE 3: jiejie, gege, didi, (+meimei, what Wen Xiao called E’shou) are not just addresses exclusive to those of blood/familial relation! they can be used to address anyone younger/older than you and also be used in a flirtatious manner (e.g. Wen Xiao’s “Pei-jiejie” is very different from Bai Jiu’s “Pei-jiejie”)!

Week 9: Sustaining Student Engagement and Motivation

Week 10: Gamification of Online Learning

Due to the pandemic, virtual learning has become a trend in current society. As technology advances, many people tend to socialize virtually to lessons their discomfort with face-to-face interaction. Virtual learning indeed provides more opportunities and choices for adult learners by offering varied learning platforms or physical locations outside of the traditional campus. However, some industry leaders also warn that these innovations could lead to a slow drain on the quality of learning and thus prevent the academy from fulfilling its mission (Detres et al, 2020). Statistics show that retention rates for online courses can be 20% lower than face-to-face courses, even though online learning offers adults more flexible access to higher education (Detres et al, 2020). Therefore, using technology in teaching, providing effective communication, and engaging students in their learning in synchronous and asynchronous modalities play a key role in keeping learners through their success.

Digital media have become an integral component of human socialization, reach beyond entertainment and have evolved into excellent educational tools. So much so that a new term appeared: gamification of learning. The aim of gamification is to incorporate game-based elements into conventional learning activities to improve engagement by encouraging participation (Moore-Russo et al, 2017). Student motivation is relative to four primary factors: curiosity, challenge, fantasy and control (Kim&Lee, 2015). Instructors can trigger students' internal motivation by incorporating digital contests and elements into the curriculum setting. For example, a history teacher can issue virtual reality(VR) to students to increase their curiosity by immersing feel in a virtual world. Which not only provides a sight of three dimensions, but also promotes critical thinking skills. It is making education so much more effective and interactive. Besides, professors can design game points or experience systems to reward students for completing various tasks or assignments by offering multiple learning selections. This approach makes learning less stiff and mandatory, and students can feel a sense of confidence and are driven by their cognitive curiosity and relevance challenge. Therefore, successful teaching requires instructors to integrate game elements into traditional learning and make education more dynamic.

Adding to this list, as of 1/26/25:

I am loving following along with Tenillypo's (@tenillypo) ongoing Missing Pieces series, which has beautiful, sharply observed short fics inspired by each episode of the drama - particular faves so far are Good for the Gander, featuring Wen Xiao attempting a shovel talk on Zhao Yuanzhou, and First Impressions, where Zhuo Yichen and Wen Xiao compare notes on their first encounter with Zhao Yuanzhou.

I'm also BLOWN AWAY by Lemur710's beautiful The Lonely Demon, which is two ravishing chapters into imagining Zhuo Yichen's life after the series's end, and is pulling off the incredible balancing act of making him recognizably Zhuo Yichen while still leaning into the ways that losing (and searching for) Zhao Yuanzhou would change him.

At the lantern for the drowned, by LadyMithiel (@eldritch-bisexual) rearranged my head (in a good way) by asking, "What if that piece of Zhao Yuanzhou's soul that Zhuo Yichen extracted ended up in his head?" and then delivering on that premise with such thoughtfulness about Zhao Yuanzhou's history and character that I immediately adopted a bunch of it as headcanons. Love it.

Fangs of Fortune Recs!

By popular demand! This list is very preliminary, since new stuff is being written all the time! But for now, here are a few of my favorites:

Throw the Windows Wide by achray (@achray1)

You know when an author writes a fic that captures exactly the vibe of a pairing that made you fall in love with that pairing in the first place? It’s so hard to do, because you have to start by perfectly capturing both characters as individuals, but this author makes it look effortless. Here, Zhuo Yichen sees Zhao Yuanzhou kissing Li Lun—a sight that definitely wasn’t meant for him—and has a conversation with him about it afterward. The author’s command of the characters’ speech patterns and body language is flawless, and this fic gave me SO many feelings about these two. Bonus 1: it’s followed by a VERY HOT sequel. Bonus 2: I would rate this as pretty accessible to folks who haven’t seen the series yet. Bonus 3: check out the same author’s Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Demon Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask), which is SO cute and features a lot of embarrassed Zhuo Yichen (my favorite!).

One of the great gifts this show gives fic writers is the multiplicity of opportunities for fuck-or-die setups (or, to be more specific to the genre, “only dual cultivation can save you” setups), and there are several great examples, but this one is my fave. Set during the arc when Zhuo Yichen is carrying around massive amounts of demonic qi but no demonic core to ground it… well, I can’t do better than the author’s summary: “Stop me, then.” Li Lun isn’t looking at Zhuo Yichen at all when he says it, all his attention turned to hurting Zhao Yuanzhou instead. “Save your precious Xiao-Zhuo daren. Fuck a core into him yourself.” Absolutely nobody is having a good time in this fic, each for their own different reasons, and the angst is so, so delicious.

Honorable mention goes to full of tangled karma by angryteapot, which uses dual cultivation to solve the Episode 34 dilemma with a delightful mpreg threesome scheme – come for the porn, stay for Wen Xiao righteously and literally kicking Zhao Yuanzhou when he’s down because he trampled all over her agency.

After the mpreg joke during the Ying Long arc, Zhuo Yichen asks Wen Xiao if she actually thought he might be pregnant. Their conversation is so tender and so vulnerable – the author has such a great handle on their relationship and on the two characters as individuals: Wen Xiao matter-of-fact and protective, Zhuo Yichen bravely persevering through his embarrassment. I’ve re-read this like three times already because reading it feels like a warm hug.

Others!

I also recommend Onmyo-Jin’s (@onmyo-jin) awesome collection of bite-size fics, of which my favorites are Out of habit (Zhao Yuanzhou doing a great impression of the cat who sits on your laptop while you’re trying to work) and In danger of you (the classic “we’re being chased so we have to make out to conceal our identities”).

Finally, I love fruits of your labor by ghostrunner (@witchmachine), which is another great fic that’s super accessible to folks who haven’t taken the plunge to watch the show yet. It’s a missing scene from Episode 31 (the gathering-branches-from-the-sacred-tree bit), but most of all it’s Zhuo Yichen and Zhao Yuanzhou finally stepping over the line between friends and lovers, taking joy in the discovery of one another’s desires.

(And I’d be remiss if I missed this opportunity to plug my own post-canon fic, The Wedding of the Great Demon, which is also very accessible for a reader who hasn’t seen the drama yet!)
