Reflect
Madi: For my community placement, I worked as a volunteer at the Urbana Park District.  Since it was a park district, I had many opportunities to work in a lot of different events.  My two favorite events that I worked at was the SPLASH program and the Sloppy Science nights.  First, I will explain my experiences at SPLASH.  The SPLASH program is an afterschool program.  SPLASH stands for “Students Playing & Learning After School Hours.”  I think that basically sums it up on what it is.  It is a safe environment for kids to come to after school to have fun and to learn.  When I first walked into Urbana Middle School, it instantly made me feel nostalgic to my days in middle school.  It just had that atmosphere of a playful and carefree life that we had back in middle school.  One of my favorite memories from my community placement was working with *Becca.  She was a student with some learning problems but that didn’t stop her from always having a good time and keeping a smile on her face all the time.  We were working on an art project, and she was drawing Disney princesses.  She had the biggest smile on her face and said, “I’m not the best at drawing, but I won’t give up until I make this drawing perfect!”  I am also not the best at drawing so we were both struggling with the drawing.  Finally, she finished it and it was such a great feeling to work so hard on something and see a great end result.  She taught me that no matter what is going on in your life, it is a personal decision whether or not to stay positive and be happy.  She also taught me a lot about being patient.  I never would have taken so long on a drawing because I get frustrated easily with art, but she taught me how to not give up no matter how long it takes.
Philip: I don’t remember how many times I went to my community, but I remember how my feeling was changed as time passes. In the beginning, I did not consider is as a volunteer activity, but just a mission, or in other word, I thought I was forced to do this activity. The reasons for me to spend half hour to a place that I was not interested in was that this community placement is a requirement of this class, and also I thought I might learn something useful to my future career, even though it only took a small part of my reasoning. However, as I went there more and more, I found that it’s actually enjoyable when I read to my kid, when I found my kid was improving every day. Without noticing when, I started thinking what kinds of word arrangement will be concepts more acceptable for my student, how to make my class more relax and entertaining, and how to improve engagement? The thinking process and the experience with kids are the best lessons I learn from this placement, and the most important thing I learned from these lessons is to think from children’s perspectives. For example, what are they interested in, what do they value the most in order to make them engage in the class.
Taylor: Philip and I worked at the same community placement, in which we were placed as volunteers in Reading partners. Reading partners is an after-school program that tutors work with students to enhance their reading capabilities. The first time I arrived at my community placement, I made the decision to develop the sense of social responsibility that I will be making a difference in my student’s life. I have been provided the opportunity to read one on one with a student to help improve their communication and critical thinking skills. When I started volunteering at the DMBGC I thought I was going to be teaching my student, but in the end, he was teaching me. My student and I met twice a week and set multiple goals to finish books and activities to get to our fun activity at the end. He allowed me to test which different learning styles and skills that were most beneficial to him, that I would be able to incorporate into our daily lessons and even carry on to my future profession. As I look back on my community placement at the DMBGC, I realize how much of an awarding experience it was. The DMBGC is a place where every child is treated equally through the opportunities and expectations regardless the difference between one another. I have been given the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many student’s by providing physical and social activities through the act of reading. This experience has opened my eyes to new interests and passions I will be able to carry into my professional life. I have been provided a sense of purpose in my life through the techniques I have gained from working with my student and other peers within the community. The Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club was one of the most memorable experiences that has offered me a chance to make a positive influence on the lives of others through the experience and opportunities I have been given.
Kate: Serving at UniPlace has been the most humbling experience. I learn so much each week about myself and the people that come to dinner. A lot of the people that come to the dinner are lower income families and don’t get dinner and food to eat every night. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and so fun to talk to. Each week I saw the same people with some new faces here and there. These people are so dedicated and are so drawn to this place and that’s what I love about it. These people don’t have to come but they come anyways, not only for the food but also the company. I don’t know what it’s like to live off a couple dollars a day with little shelter and no food. It’s hard to witness or hear about the conditions poor people live off of on a daily basis. Each of their stories are so abundant even though their situation itself is not. I cannot imagine riding my bike from place to place of each season just to get somewhere near or far. I have the privilege of having my own car or access to a car if I needed to get to the store. But for Troy, he struggled each day to get on his bike and ride 30 miles over to the next town and not just because he wanted to but because he had to. One thing that I pondered while being at Uniplace was that these people are so different than me. That I wouldn’t be able to connect or talk to these people because their daily lives are do different than mine. But what I have come to realize is that these people might seem different than me physically and materially but that we are all the same spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. We all have needs and wants and we all yearn for a peaceful heart. Our lives might not reflect that in the same way but we all have dreams and desires. Sharon was that one dedicated person that came to the dinner each week. I wasn’t completely aware of her story but she was a transgender with some mental issues as well. It wasn’t always easy talking to Sharon but each week she came in with a smile and something to talk about. Sharon loved going to church and bible study. It was always hard for me to get myself to interact with Sharon being that she had some mental deficits, it was not always easy for me to approach and interact with people that can sometimes be hard to talk to. But she is a human being just like I am and should be treated the exact same. One night I asked her how her dinner was and she just started ranting about her desires to open up her own restaurant inside a church. She talked on and on about how she wanted this restaurant church to serve people fairly and give them an opportunity to eat cheap and enjoy company. It was so nice to hear her talk about her ideal dream. Sharon was certainly far from the glamorous rich life and an abundance of opportunities but she still has needs and wants and dreams. Hearing this story shows me that we are really not that different from each other. I loved the experience of listening to people from the community and hearing their particular and important stories.
