Last Saturday we had a supa dupa show as we paid homage and gave love and respect 2 DJ Spinn. As we were all leaving @innaam handed us all some incense and I wanted 2 thank her for setting 2 tone and mood for 2 Butta Blends that I did. 6 - KENDRICK LAMAR - FOR FREE? (INTERLUDE)

Dans le paysage du rap américain, il y a un artiste qu’y m’a fait très plaisir d’entendre l’an dernier. Il s’agit de Kendrick Lamar. Je l’avais découvert en 2012 avec son morceau “Hiiipower” et depuis est resté, pour moi, un rappeur a suivre de très près. Surtout avec son dernier album “To Pimp A Butterfly” qui est assez avant gardiste dans le rap mainstream. “For Free? (interlude)” nous présente extrêmement bien cet aspect et on en redemande.

7 - ESPIIEM - NOBLESSE OBLIGE

Cela fait depuis un petit moment que le rap français n’a pas réussi a m’interpeller et me donner envie d’écouter ce qui se fait de nouveau. Pourtant, 2015 a été une agréable surprise a ce niveau. Espiiem est un rappeur parisien qui est a cheval entre un son moderne et des rimes un peu a l’ancienne. Ce qui ne fait pas de mal a personne. Une bonne découverte qui me donne espoir pour l’avenir du rap français.

8 - DJ SPINN & DJ RASHAD - DUBBY (FEAT. DANNY BROWN)

En 2014, j’ai découvert le nouveau son de Chicago, le footwork. Apparu dans les années 80, le footwork est, je trouve, une musique électronique mélangeant, a la fois, techno, jungle et rap. Au final, c’est une musique assez hybride, ainsi que rapide (150-160 bpm). L’an dernier, DJ Spinn a sorti un EP (“Off That Loud”), sur lequel apparait le morceau “Dubby” en collaboration avec DJ Rashad (pionnier du genre décédé en 2014) et Danny Brown (rappeur de originaire de Chicago). Un morceau riche et qui présente les différentes influences du footwork, qui est parfait pour les novices du genre.

9 - ONRA - WE RIDIN’ (FEAT. DAZ DILLINGER & OLIVIER DAYSOUL)

Onra est un producteur français de hip-hop instrumental. Sans doute l’un des plus cotes dans le monde, notamment grace a ses “Chinoiseries”; albums sur lequel il sample des vinyles achetés en Chine et au Vietnam, entres autres. L’an dernier il sortait son nouvel opus “Fundamental” qui est un hommage a l’age d’or du rap et du r’n’b, les années 90. Sur le morceau “We Ridin” on ressent une ambiance chill et chaleureuse qui rappelle les sons g-funk de la Californie, c’est sans doute pourquoi Daz Dillinger est sur le morceau. Un classique!

10 - KAMASI WASHINGTON - CHANGE OF GUARD

Kamasi Washington est un saxophoniste tenor qui a fait sensation l’an passé. Je l’ai découvert sans trop le savoir en écoutant des artistes comme Thundercat, Flying Lotus et Kendrick Lamar, avec lesquels il a collaboré. Son dernier album, “The Epic” est une sacrée claque que je n’ai malheureusement découvert que cette année. 

C’est pourquoi il arrive dernier sur la liste, sans pour autant être moins bon que les morceaux precedents. Bien au contraire ! Il mérite une place a part. Peut-être que je parlerais de son album plus tard.

A little over an hour ago I received some sad news about a comrade who transformed this morning from his battle with cancer. DJ Spinn my mellow... I don't even know where 2 begin or how 2 begin. Spinn was one super fresh DJ and those of us in the True School here in Dallas know him well. When I did the Down By Sound CD his crew the PHATHEAD SQUAD was on the CD. As a DJ and producer he was committed to the things that what make Hip-Hop great and that's skills. I hope that you can tune in tonight from 8-10pm central time on KNON 89.3FM to pay our respects 2 him with minute of silence at the beginning of the show.
