EDM Through The Years

In recent years, Electronic Dance Music or EDM concerts have gained a lot of popularity, especially amongst youngsters. But how did EDM become so popular in recent years? Well, it might seem very recent, but this genre of music has been around since 1970s and developed over the years to become a contemporary culture like it is today. EDM has been played in what we would then call as discos.

Even if you go to see the list of events in Pune, you will notice the EDM concerts top the charts. But what exactly is EDM? To put it in simple terms, it is a combination of different electronic music subgenres that the crowd would dance to, like techno, pop, trance, trap, dub step and so on. Playing all this at the same time would of course be impossible. With EDM all this started to become possible by mixing and matching different sub genres giving more to the dance culture. If you listen to EDM today, it is obviously very different from the disco music you listened to in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Let’s have a look at what different types of EDM genres through the years were.

1. The disco and synth pop EDM of the 1970’s - The disco genre was very popular in the late 70s. It pulled the crowd to the dance floors, using electronic instruments and drum machines creating synthesized rhythms. “I feel love” by Donna Summer released in 1977 was a very popular number back then. This type of song was a combination of both synth pop and disco making synth pop as a separate dance music subgenre.

2. The post disco synth pop of the 1980’s - In this era, music began to be recognized and produced in the mainstream industry of music in Europe, with EDM becoming classier and more sophisticated with advancement in technology. After disco days, drum machines and synthesizers started to get in more frequency. It was in this area that MIDIt changed the way electronic instruments communicated. With the advent of computers, electronic music’s popularity shot up.

3. Beginning of contemporary EDM in the 1990s. - Some of the first few familiar sounds in EDM that people rave to even today were techno, house music, hardstyle, dub and trance. There was even the drum and bass. The EDM was already very popular in the mainstream crowd of the 90’s and these new subgenres marked its popularity more, making EDM a larger part of the music industry, especially in Europe.

4. The 2000’s EDM - Although the start was very slow, the EDM gradually picked up popularity in US with international DJs and artists like Madonna, David Guetta, Daft Punk who are still very relevant.

Even today, EDM is recognized for mixing of sounds and remixes. Its subgenres are now majority in pop and hip-hop artists.
