We used AI to produce a video that provides a glimpse into a night out at the legendary house music venue that was Sir Henry's Night Club in Cork, Ireland.
The video, just over a minute long, features AI-animated photographs of clubbers and DJs taken in the 1990's and 2000's during the club’s heyday. (It closed down in 2003).
Alongside the animated photographs are video clips created by AI software after it was asked to imagine a Saturday night in the club in the 1990’s, long before taking photos at every social event was commonplace.
Sir Henry's played host to world-renowned DJs, some of whom feature in the video, including Boo Williams, Kerri Chandler along with Irish duo Shane Johnson and Greg Dowling aka Fish Go Deep who founded the legendary 'Sweat' night in 1988.

From Gaza to Cork. A wonderful hip-hop story for 2020
Music is the universal language and nowhere has this been demonstrated more than with the story of MC Abdul Rahman, an 11 year old rapper from Gaza, Palestine, who has captured the imagination of many these last few months. It’s a story with a big Cork connection too, but first let’s take it back a few days to a video that has caused everything to go viral in the last week.
Tumblr media
MC Abdul uploads different videos to instagram weekly, and spreads positivity through hip-hop covers of other artists and his own material. The latest clip, featuring him surrounded by his school friends and rapping to a track by Palestinian rapper Waheeb Nasan, took off in a big day and found favour with big names likes DJ Khaled and Bella Hadid! MCA Rap (Abdul) went on to feature on a live instagram video with Saudi rap guru Big Hass, who is one of the most influential purveyors of hip-hop in the Arab world.
Abdul went from a few hundred followers to over 60 thousand in a matter of days and it wasn’t only DJ Khaled spreading the love. Respected UK artists such as a Lowkey and Akala also shared the story, and Abdul was suddenly in big demand, with rappers and producers from all over the world wanting to collab and send beats! It’s an amazing story but many of us here in Cork already knew all about Abdul from a few months ago.
Abdul was introduced to me at the start of the Lockdown by a Corkman named Liam Ahern who is teaching in Mexico city, and he helped connect one of his online students (Abdul) to our own GMC of the Kabin studio here. Abdul had already been collaborating with the kids in the Kabin and the Hut through GMC by the time I started help promote him here, and i was very honoured to give one of their original tracks (“Peace”), it’s first worldwide radio play on Corks RedFM a few months ago.
Tumblr media
His Cork connections have resonated deeply here and supported by Youth work Cork and Ireland plus Music Generation, GMC has managed to get things up and running with Liam and Abdul. His weekly videos are really popular and many of my own contacts have been in touch offering support, including Cork City FC, who have given me a jersey to send to Abdul (Covid restrictions mean I can’t send it yet). Abdul returned the favour on my own Instagram live the other night with a specially themed rap about Cork City FC and the Kabin! Illustrator Audrey Cantillon and graf artists the Trouble Club have also sent me stuff for him, and a young LA youtube reviewer with a huge hip-hop channel (Dads reacts) has invited him to do stuff too.
It’s only the beginning for this amazingly talented kid. The thing that is most impressive about the boy for me, besides his skills, is his demeanour and grace and it’s his videos display a passionate pride in his Gaza background and heritage too. Abdul hopes to spread peace, unity and love through his music and he is doing a great job of connecting Palestine with the world. He is a kid from Gaza who is shining a light on this wonderfully colourful and vibrant region that has been oppressed for many years. Hip-hop is the perfect medium in which to tell this story.
He has a great family and support and will be able to keep his feet on the ground with this new found fame, as he continues to make music an do covers as he develops his style. His english is amazing and he raps in the language too, which is definitely helping his crossover potential, but he doesn’t rule out rapping in arabic one day. His videos are filmed under powerful Gaza backdrops and it is a great way for us to see the world through his eyes. He will be coming to Cork once this pandemic ends and I can’t wait to collaborate with him more through the Kabin and one day I want him to come on my radio show too. The Kabin has it’s own 11 year stars such as MC Tiny and friends, and there is a powerful bond developing between our rappers here and Abdul and other Palestinians such as Waheeb Nasan. Irish rap legend Murli is one of those who has been assisting him, and Abdul will never be short of Irish friends as he begins his hip-hop journey around the globe!

Scruff’s Top 5
It's been exciting the past week, I streamed the first show of Sheldon's Dance Experiment on Cork Radio in Ireland last Wednesday, I got approached to host an electronic dance night at a newer club in Sioux City, and i'm working on my latest production. I can't be anything but grateful for these opportunities, I don't know where they are coming from, but I know that I have to bring it. Hard work pays off, but I do know that just because the gigs and opportunities are coming my way I can't afford to slack off. The work load has increased and now it's time to organize and pace myself for the challenges that are ahead of me. Not only will I have to keep up with weekly episodes for the radio show, original productions to release, school mashups, but on top of that Lee and I are trying to add employees to the roster. This journey is expanding in ways I had hoped but could never imagine. I just cross my fingers and hope that with the right people in my corner I will be able to continue and grow, not just as a DJ, but as a man and entrepreneur. It was a cold, bitter weekend in Sioux land. With numbers well into the negatives, cars disobeying the turn of a key, and the wind disrespecting your coat and bones; I was looking forward to heating up the dance floor. After a week of researching newer tracks, and hidden gems I started my night at the firehouse with some bangers. Throughout the night the crowd came and left, yet stayed quite busy for the most part. I've enjoyed my month residency at the Firehouse, it has been an eye opening experience. I can't wait to finish off this month strong, and hopefully extend the residency. Lost In The Fire - Gesaffelstein & The Weeknd Wow - Post Malone  Party Tonight - Revlow, Sandor Push Up (Danny Howard Remix) - Brother Leo  Get The Funk - BRADII

South x Southwest connection
One of last weeks biggest tracks has a huge Cork connection, and it was great to welcome high flying South West rapper God Knows down to the city for the video shoot of his amazing “We move the Needle” track. The tune is somewhat a response to some of the big events happening in the world recently, so it was apt that the video was shot in front of some iconic Black Lives Matter imagery on the walls and hoardings of Cork City.
Tumblr media
The video was shot by Stephen Hall, and takes in some of the much discussed murals that were created as a response to the murder of George Floyd. The video was shot in front of the Peter Martin mural on the Mardyke and the Black Lives Matter hoarding on Sullivans Quay, created by the Climate Youth Activists. There was also a visit to the Kabin Studio on the northside of Cork City, a hub that defines much of what is great about Cork hip-hop in 2020. The multi talented Trouble Club were doing live graf up there too, and some of Corks finest youngsters stopped by, including MC Tiny plus Cara and Sophie. It was also fitting that arguably Corks best ever rapper, appeared up here, and it was great to see Bony back on the mic for this tune.
Tumblr media
Bony takes the second verse on the “We move the Needle” jam, and despite a few appearances with GMC, it’s the first time we’ve heard from him properly in well over 10 years. From his emergence in the mid 2000’s in what was probably raps golden era here in Cork, Bony was always a rapper who demanded to be respected greatly on the mic. Like many of the great MC’s of that era, much of the best material remained unrecorded, but it’s still worth remembering that many of the rappers back then were the best in the country at the time.
Tumblr media
What happened? Well life does tend to get in the way, and as teenager we all eventually grow up and adult responsibilities don’t always go hand in hand with the rap grind. It’s hard to do it as anything other than a hobby, and many of the best rappers of that era moved on to other things. Some of the them were respected battlers too, and continued in this vein, but I always regret that when things were really popping off in the Cork City rap scene, more albums didn’t come out. At the time Bony, Nash, Brozy, Mickey Gatch, Samir, B Wonder, Buachaill Dana and many more, were MC’s who pound for pound could have handled themselves against anyone anywhere, but at least we still have the memories!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bony’s verse on “We move the Needle” shows he’s still got it as good as ever, and he’s joined by God knows regular collaborator from the Rusangano era, Murli, who’s own solo material in the last 6 months is getting some much overdue attention aswell. It was fitting that PX head honcho Sean and Denise Chaila appeared in the video too, as they both illustrate why the South west is the template for where hip-hop can go in Ireland in 2020.   I’ve written about Denise numerous times here now, but she continues to gather momentum and more than anyone, she is ushering in the new wave in Ireland right now.
The whole PX crew from Limerick are showing the citys’ strength and depth and the importance of that whole cooperative approach to music. If Limerick can do it Cork and other areas can too as they are up against the same barriers we are, and in some ways it’s even tougher up there to get attention.
Tumblr media
God Knows recognises that it’s important to have MC’s and DJ’s leading the conversation and he told Hot Press that “we’re the ones supposed to lead the way. When it’s out of our hands, we’re just doing what other people ask us to do. We move the needle, nobody else does. We don’t have to go by anyone’s rules, we make our own rules”. This is the very essence of hip-hop and it’s refreshing to have such a back to basics approach surrounding this and other releases from the same project, which have included some of the south wests best MC’s, while a Dublin feature is imminent too. And big shouts to Sert One and Fly High society for the banging beat. Things are moving in 2020!

'No Fiat five hundred techno!': why digital popular music in Cork is actually coming off|Songs|The Guardian
Tumblr media
"Messy in the best feasible way," claims Stopper producer Doubt of the epiphanic expertise he had in 2015 at a storage facility rave in Estate House, north Greater london. "It was actually definitely rested atmospheres. Surveillance-- although I failed to observe a lot of-- were actually sound, and there were massive sausages all evening. I will certainly never actually skilled just about anything like that in Ireland."
He remained in Greater london since of English producer NKC, among the inventors of the club noise referred to as tough drum, then only a Soundcloud tag. Uncertainty (genuine title Ollie McMorrow) and fellow citizens Tension (Dylan O'Mahony) and also Syn (Reneé Griffin) put together their personal tag, Flood, a year after their tough drum rendezvous in Greater london. After discovering, trying out as well as moseying with close friends in Cork, all it took was NKC's raucous parties to dissolve their cumulative obstacle.
Flooding and also an internet of various other producers in their 20s from the tiny Irish south-coast urban area-- Numbertheory, Lighght, Ellll and also Superfície-- are right now creating titles for on their own in European club popular music circles, with syncopated mutations of percussion-driven electronic songs. Although they're not all quickly organized together, the popular denominator is a primal drum-laden noise where rhythms tumble at breakneck velocity. The songs provides a lot of these youthful musicians a feeling of reason and also identity-- even when much of all of them are leaving Ireland for a new beginning, amid the sanitising of young people lifestyle as developers set waste to alternate venues, and a roaring casing dilemma, with taking off homelessness and the development of Dublin as one of the world's very most costly areas to reside in.
Cork has actually cracked new ground in Irish music prior to. In the 1980s, it was actually the unexpected property to a vibrant reggae culture, the cello-brandishing post-punk outfit 5 Go Down to the Sea, and Microdisney, the county's response to Fleetwood Macintosh. It was actually the bar Sir Henry's, founded in the overdue 70s, that opened up many in the county to club songs, specifically house. "Mam Henry's was ground zero," states Cork house songs pioneer Shane Johnson, that co-founded a night there called Sweat that drew in worldwide celebrities like Kerri Chandler, Cajmere and also Derrick Might. "Certainly not only for the club setting, however, for the nearby rock scene just before it."
Building on its own legacy, Jimmy Horgan, that runs local area file retail store Plugd along with Albert Twomey, has been a cornerstone of nonconforming music in Stopper, regularly holding the new kind of developers upstairs in the store's live space, a site got in touch with the Roundy. "The guy takes a genuine passion in every kind of popular music that's made as well as played in the urban area," producer James O'Connell, 25, that tape-records as Numbertheory, distinguishes me. "He's really for the lifestyle."
Facebook Twitter Pinterest Originally coming from Dublin, Horgan is self-effacing in his appraisal of the city's dynamic percussive songs setting: to him, it is actually the musicians'unrelenting creativity that has actually made it all achievable."Most likely the first pointer I obtained of the noise was when Superfície-- then going under the name Sexworker-- decreased in a few demonstrations of his monitors, maybe back in 2013 or even 2014,"Horgan bears in mind.
"Me and my associate were actually astounded."Parishes of these young musicians, typically in residences or even apartments, are where component of this Stopper drum act were born. McMorrow, whose dad and also grandfather were actually each drummers, points out:"Percussion has regularly been a huge component of my life."As well as at 14, O'Mahony came to enjoy performers such as Burial and also labels like Warp and also Hyperdub, and determined he might perform it, also, pirating manufacturing software program, messing all around with the features, and also investing the final two years at institution seeking to create one thing"from another location nice". While joining the exact same college training program, O'Mahony met Lion, that had been actually recording as Syn, and would certainly put up at her place after course. She introduced all of them all, consisting of O'Connell, to a collection of brand-new, eardrum-bursting audios coming from tags including Her Records, Fade to Mind, as well as Celestial Aircraft. Superfície, a Brazilian-Irish developer now located in Berlin, showed them kuduro, baile rut and batucada, while tensions of percussive songs promoted by labels such as Príncipe and also Naafi, widened their horizons additionally. Lighght, AKA Eamon Ivri, simply learnt about Flood--
"a real inspiration "-- via Soundcloud, randomly and belatedly, prior to he ever satisfied them, in spite of their distance as well as identical interests. Flood's very first launch, a fun nine-track collection, showed up in 2017, a year after they formed. They chose that they required a center for "effectively talking over ideas and blaring monitors as loud as possible"as well as discovered a little, private stockroom space in an industrial sphere ignoring Stopper's docklands. The duality in their music, in between the organic and also the mechanical, may in part be mapped back to this aspect. "There was actually a raw comparison in between the commercial, gray and also decaying storehouses and also the beautiful scenery out on to Cork harbour,"mentions Question. Ellll, Berlin-based techno alchemist Ellen King, says the internet as well as local hubs may certainly not have been the
only reasons that Cork surfaced as a breeding place for unusual club songs." Cork has been actually an incredibly house-focused area, and although I have actually never gotten in touch with that, percussive music coming out of the metropolitan area in the final couple of years experiences like a feedback to that attitude." Facebook Twitter Pinterest From the very first few seconds you mash participate in on a Flooding singular, or a hypnotic Ellll release, or even a stormlike go crazy loosie coming from Lighght, you listen to dispute and tumult. Percussion-wise, they take coming from audios from around the world. Pay attention to the drums and also you may think about Latin The United States or even Africa. Yet in some cases local designs sneak in: Numbertheory consisted of an example of sean nós, an Irish practice of haunting, melismatic singing; Syn's track Coy featured a sample of the bodhrán, an Irish drum produced along with goatskin; Lighght's outstanding 2019 cd, Gore-Tex in the Nightclub, Balenciaga Amongst the Hedges, utilizes the harp. Stopper is actually known more popularly as"the rebel county", the end result of its own lengthy past of fierce protection and obstinate anxiety, primarily against English policy. A caricature of Cork individuals in Irish society-- perma-vexed and also precariously parochial, created well-known abroad by firebrand footballer Roy Keane as well as pop lifestyle phenomena like the TELEVISION series Youthful Criminals-- relatively includes some fact." It's a motto, however the entire rebel aesthetic that Cork has actually taken on definitely forms the urban area.
