Rustic Floating Shelves

Of all the projects I’ve ever done, the single most admired are these floating shelves I designed and made (well really my carpenter made under my direction and supervision) for our place in Playa del Carmen Mexico. This is the end result:

I came up with this idea to fill that odd niche that was too big for art or a mirror and too shallow to place a buffet, so after considering many other options I decided to keep it simple. After all... who doesn’t need shelves?

So I hit Pinterest to gather ideas. Although I never found shelves this length, actually not even half of that, I figured I would just double everything, make sure I kept it all straight and level, and crossed my fingers.

And so we began by measuring twice:

Then we created these supports strips

Then we put them up on the wall. NOTE: We were working in Mexico, where the construction is brick, block and cement. We did not have to worry about hitting a stud to support the weight of the shelves

Next we made the “boxes” open on the side of the wall. For a sturdy shelf make sure the size of the opening of the box is the same measurement than the wood you used for the support. If you used 2x4′s then the opening of the box should be 4″

then comes the stain

then...drumrolls... We slide them in and secure them

And well then, we have a set of shelves that people talk about...

This picture was taken after the shelf, with planters in tow, dropped to the floor. The shelf broke and the planters made a mess. A year ago, I would have cursed and then cried and would have thought it unfair and inconvenient that I would have to fix it. But this time, I took a deep breath and took the shelf back out to the workshop, because I’ve accepted that these things are just part of the process.
