After having played all 6 of Nemlei's games, I have come to see the themes of all the games. (Or at least, my interpretation of them) So, let's go down the list.
Jack in a Castle. To me, this game is about what we do in relationships. How do we build a relationship with our manager, new friends, crushes, coworkers, etc. I actually really loved this game.
Candy Scabs. To me, this game is about how we judge others physically. When we slowly reveal ourselves, we can either get a reaction of "thank you for showing me your true self" or "you're scary, therefore I hate you." We all hope we get the first reaction, but sometimes, we might need to kill (metaphorically speaking) the person who hates what we look like.
Divilethion. To me, this game is about what religious trauma can do to us. We can either break free when we notice or we can go with the flow and continue the cycle of trauma.
Better Half. To me, this game is about learning to love yourself and take care of yourself. How depression can really hurt us, but with care, comfort, and love from ourselves, we can get through it, we survived everything up to now.
No Good Noelle. To me, this game is about accepting that you might not be good at something. There's no shame in it. It's just not your thing.
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. To me, this game (although still in development) is about family and/or shared trauma. We survived together, we will continue surviving together, or we'll hate each other because we remind each other of our trauma.
Anyway, that're just my interpretations. I'd love to hear y'all's if you have other interpretations. And remember, there's no wrong way to interpret a story narrative, everyone does not know what the original intent was for the creator(s) of their stories.

Just played one of Nemlei’s previous works Divilethion because I saw the comparisons with tcoaal and I could tell why! Here’s some 2am thoughts:
I like the story, but when it comes to the edgy humor I like tcoaal’s writing a little better. You can see how throughout each iteration nemlei sharpened their edgy humor like a blade more and more, so it’s a given their latest work is where the black comedy’s at its sharpest!
That being said I like the art style in Devilethion in a different way than tcoaal, where instead of being in the style of comic panels the cutscenes in Devilethion really pop out of the screen. Like I’m in the sacrifice ritual room partying too.
You can easily see some of the ideas sprouting in Divilethion that bore fruit in their latest work. Namely the fact that we can’t have just ONE NORMAL OLDER BROTHER CHARACTER IN THESE FUCKING GAMES-
Anyway it’s interesting that Lynn is a lot more confident in his cruelty than Andrew is, because he never hyper-focused on normalcy the way Andrew does. He’s fully confident in what he’s done and doesn’t care how anyone sees him.
To be fair though in the village all the cruel things he does IS normal. It’s only when in the ending where he chooses his brother and turns his cruelty on the village that everyone’s shocked. Like once he’s made his choice there’s ZERO hesitation.
I was NOT expecting Devilethion to be so charming? Like yeah he’s evil but his interactions with Lynn are somehow so cute??? And Lynn plays off him so well!
I know Nemlei and Kit9 are focused on tcoaal for now and probably will be for the next few years given the pace they’re going, but I hope that one day Nemlei’s previous works can be officially released again. Maybe we can even get a sequel to Devilethion and see how another pair of terrible siblings survive another terrible world…except in this game only one of the siblings is terrible. The other is actual fine and normal and his one flaw is that he doesn’t want to be sacrificed. Relatable!

Mae plays Divilethion
Hi, so I’m continuing my playthrough of NemLei’s games, and next up on the list is Divilethion. It’s another cute yet dark visual-novel with very pretty art. I don't have too much to say about it, but there are some things I’d like to mention about it. Firstly, there’s the art, it’s gorgeous. It's everything we’ve seen in previous games but taken to an extreme, it’s all so lush and vibrant and with a strong sense of style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The story of this game concerns a small village in the middle of nowhere, completely unremarkable. Unremarkable except for the fact that its villagers worship and offer sacrifices to Divilethion, a kind and benevolent god, or an evil and cruel demon. Or both. Divilethion protects the village from monsters, disasters and all manner of other things, and all it asks for in return is for human hearts to be sacrificed to him in a midnight ritual.
Divilethion is not just an unseen patron, but a character in the narrative, he’s present, he’s mean and he’s also evil. The villagers pray to him, and he solves their problems in return for human hearts. It’s not clear how long this has been going on, who first started it, how Divilethion arrived, but the story isn't really about these things, so it doesn't matter. The story is about the relationship between the main character, Lynn,  his younger brother and Divilethion.
Lynn serves as one of the three high-priests of Divilethion and his personal favourite. After a terrible flood hits the village, Divilethion demands a sacrifice. He’s annoyed that Lynn skipped out on him, and marks her Brother as his chosen sacrifice.
The player is given the choice of accepting Divilethion’s wishes and sacrificing his brother or refusing and helping her brother escape. That's the main conflict of the game,
The novel is a little short and with only two endings, one where you sacrifice your brother, and one where you don't and escape the village together.
I’d have liked it to have been longer and to explore more about Divilethion and the cult and to have the story play out more slowly. But apparently it was a NaNoRenO 2020 entry.NaNoRenO is an annual month-long game jam in which developers are challenged to make a visual novel from start to finish. So, I really can't criticize it for being brief or short.
Overall, it's cute and dark, and enjoyable, Worth playing to look at all the cool art and see the premise. But I don’t really have much else to say about it.
(Blog entry included for completeness)

Anyone remember that weird sitcom about the two roommates who shared an apartment and spent most of the show grappling with their relationships with their siblings and conspiring that the guy who lived next door was actually two different people?
Yeah, me neither.

These 4 are friends.
Lynn and Andrew met at a religious/cultist gathering. Andrew was a bit weirded out by Lynn until he saw Divilethion and began talking about the demon he and Ashley know.
Yule met Lynn outside the village and helped him due to Noelle pushing him to do so.
Andrew and Thiu met at a mental health group where they both went for depression and suicidal thoughts. They hit it off from early on.
Lynn and Thiu met when Divilethion marked Thiu. Lynn helped both Thius out of the city.
Andrew and Yule met by chance in a random spot. They ignored each other at first but they would constantly bump into each other so they broke the silence and chatted.
Yule met Thiu a lot like how he met Noelle, crying in the cold. Yule, not needing anything from Thiu tried to walk away, but Noelle wanted to check up on Thiu. Days later, they're friends.
I don't know why, but I feel like they would make a good friend group.

Alright! Because I wanted to do something special to celebrate how many followers this dumb little blog has obtained, drawing requests!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of these two charts, you can give me a TCOAAL or other Nemlei-verse character to draw in one of these outfits
Would prefer requests to be in the replies of this post, as to keep these requests and the x reader ones separate. Cool? Cool!

I enjoyed the game. Everyone’s horrible. Corporations are in on some massive organ harvesting ring. Rudeness is commonplace instead of manners. Many people are focused on…well you already know. It seems overlooked that they practice cannibalism and summoning demons multiple times. Our protagonist/antagonist live in a dystopia of sorts and I doubt they’re the only serial killers on the run. I also believe Ashley to be the incarnate of Divilethion. Her soul described as tar covered and that it’s pitch black. Divilethion had a pitch black aura and an obsession with one named Lynn. He also demanded human sacrifices. It would explain why Ashley has a gift when it comes to summoning the otherworldly. Lynn and Marrow remind somewhat of Ashley and Andrew. Mayhaps they are the descendants of one of the brothers. I will be playing through the rest of Nemlei’s games. Something I should have done in anticipation of The Coffin of Andy and Leyley’s release. But alas, life tends to throw wrenches in my soup.
