The sound of hooves thundering across the landscape, a carriage made of glass holding a coffin rattles down a stone path, a fate sealed in stone.
“Ah, my dear esteemed benefactor. My proud flower of evil. You truly are the fairest one of all.”
Strung up like cattle to the butcher, the coffin is rattled with chains and bindings, the poor soul within trapped inside a dreamless sleep.
“O’ magic mirror, thy wisdom I entreat… Reveal unto me the visage I see…”
A past as dark as the mirrors reflections, damming in the way it forces one to see the past they so desperately try to hide.
“You, whose image the Dark Mirror did beckon forth… If your heart bids to it, take the hand of one reflected in the Mirror.”
Breathing deep and slow, veins like ice and heart just barely beating… is this fear, or excitement?
“As flame reduces the stars to ash. As ice seals away even time itself. As great trees swallow even the sky. Fear not the power of darkness. Now, demonstrate your power.”
Nails scratch at skin until red ribbons flow graciously, dirtying purity and harboring dark secrets as pain is finally revealed to a world that doesn’t and never will care.
“To me, to them, to yourself. The hour grows long and time is scarce. Keep your grip steady, no matter what may come…”
Something impure, something dark gross and demented in the way it hides behind a sharp, spindly smile. The way it grins with teeth dulled down by a file, canines still sharp as knives. The way its eyes glimmer like jewels tainted with grime. The way it speaks like the winds, whispering secrets to those who cannot handle them, and takes joy in watching them collapse, only to pick them up and make it all better.
A puppeteer loves its puppets, no matter the imperfections. Taking gentle care to unwind tangled strings and taking joy in watching each puppet play its part. Adding delicate detail with every stroke of a brush and carving of a knife. Yet,
taking joy when the puppets fall to disarray, allowing it to pick them back up and repaint them, recarve them, remake them.
“Judge-Jury-Executioner. The ability to control the fates of those whom cross my path. I will be the blade, the bandage, the life and death. I crave this feeling, not of control but of relief. I am not God.
But I can be. For them.”
Come forth, wicked and corrupt one; Welcome to this Twisted WonderHell.

Dunmer Dovahkiin - Dilvene Felder
Hey there, spaceship crew! Captain Seva speaking. I'm so sorry for the delay, but it was so worth it: all A's and B's on my exams! I'm sick right now, practically haven't left the bed in two days, so it's a perfect opportunity to finally finish my Dovahkiin's story.
The amazing f2u dividers made by @submarine-06!
Picture of Dilvene made by me.
Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Dilvene was born under the sign of the Mage, on 20th of Rain’s Hand (The Day of Shame in Hammerfell. Curious, isn’t it?). She's the daughter of a huntress by the name of Nephelle Felder and an unnamed Nord. Honestly, I never even bothered to name or design him: he's not even in the story lol.
Tumblr media
Nephelle always made sure they had food to eat, while Dilvene was responsible for housework (cooking, cleaning, chopping food, etc). Dilvene loves cooking – she even has a cookbook full of her own unique recipes, each one crafted to perfection. Despite getting embarrassed when complimented on her food, she knows her cooking is spectacular (to no surprise! It took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to learn to cook so well). When Dilvene was a young adult, she would often work in a forge or mine (which often resulted in some kind of trauma).
She used to work on a farm when she was a young teen. She had a Breton friend who would steal vegetables and fruits from the farm, and would often encourage Dilvene to steal too. But before Dilvene could try it, driven by desperation and adrenaline, she found out her friend had been punished and thrown out of the farm for stealing. Dilvene never saw the girl again, and she promised to herself that day that she would never, ever steal.
She never learned how to swim. During her teenage years, her peers threw her into a river. The seconds she was under the water felt like hours, with fish tickling her feet and water filling her lungs. When she finally got out, she had to walk all the way back home while soaked to the bone. Ever since that fateful day, Dilvene has been afraid of water.
During her journey, Dilvene slowly learns to fear the water less and less. Her friends (whom we'll talk about later) teach her to find new ways to get through the seemingly unending rivers of Skyrim.
Many bad things happened to Dilvene while her mother was away. Nearly drowning is not the worst of them by far. So when the Dunmer grew up, she packed her things and attempted to flee Skyrim, in hopes of getting to Morrowind and starting a new life. However, we all know how that one went.
Sometimes, more often than not, Dilvene has hallucinations of dragons. She often sees a shadow right over herself but when she turns, there’s no one there. (Totally not based off my own experience in Skyrim of expecting a dragon and only seeing a bird. No way)
Dilvene openly dislikes Helende. The woman is just so annoying to her for a few reasons: first, she’s arrogant; second, she’s impossibly egotistical; and third – she’s an arrogant, impossibly egotistical Altmer! Dilvene had to learn the hard way that the Altmer are not to be trusted (but we all know she’ll change her mind by the end of the story).
Pafirra. Oh, Pafirra. If Dilvene wrote a book on how much she hates being in the same room as the Khajiit, it would take a lifetime to finish it. Pafirra just can’t seem to keep her paws out of Dilvene’s pockets, stealing everything she can find, everything she’s worked so hard to earn. Pafirra’s paws must be red by now with how many times Dilvene has slapped them away.
To Casfina, well… Casfina is confusing. Dilvene is uncomfortable with the blind Bosmer, be it because she’s a Daedra worshiper or for other reasons. There’s something strangely off with Casfina that Dilvene just can’t ignore, and she has a feeling it has to do with the Daedra. However, it was her idea to tie a rope around Casfina’s waist so she wouldn’t fall or get lost while they travel.
Fun fact: Dilvene has eyes that are smaller than an average Dunmer's eyes. She got those eyes from her Nord father and hides that fact with a lot of black eye shadow.
Tumblr media
Hmm... Now I want to make a "Meet the team" post with Helende, Pafirra, and Casfina. How does that sound?
Thank you for reading, I hope you come to love Dilvene as much as I do. Leave your suggestions in the comments, I'm always up for discussion. Hope you had a great Christmas/New Year, stay safe!

Artist Research (6/8) - Amy Eckert (Manufacturing Home)
Amy Eckert is a photographer, recently based in Minneapolis, known for the several bodies of works depicting confined spaces. After receiving her BFA from Massachusetts College and an MFA from Bard, Eckert is currently part of the faculty in the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work was even featured in numerous exhibitions around the country. Eckert divides her photographic time between a long roster of commercial clients and a majority of insightful fine art portfolios. Her earlier projects examining truckers and submarines, while latest work examines the inside of prefabricated, assembly-line housing.
Tumblr media
Eckert’s latest series, Manufacturing Home, encourages the viewer to explore the mass-producted sense of “home” and the billion-dollar housing industry which sells that idea. Having grown up living in mobile homes and moving around a lot, Eckert found the process of building homes in assembly-line factories to be an interesting concept to explore. So she decided to put her focus on the newer, factory-built mobile homes as a means to “observe and comment on the strategies employed by manufacturers to make them feel homey and appealing to buyers.” She cunningly uses her photographs to delve into and grasp contemporary social, political, economic and psychological behaviors and attitudes. With fertile imagination, Eckert was able to picture what would make a home, how different its meanings are to different eyes, and how little or how much it takes to create the image of whatever home can be desired.

ooc: Firstly, no romantic/sexual nsfw bc im still a minor, stuff like gore is allowed. Although, you can be a lil suggestive if you wish bc Uno is a legal adult.
hi again :D it's Nyx or @humanthatishuman (she/they/it/any) and here's a long (+ possibly unnecessary and boring) info dump abt my Bungo Stray Dogs oc for Lillia's au, Circus of the Dead, Chiyo Uno (she/her)
If you don't know what the Circus of the Dead is, here
Her full name, as stated, is Chiyo Uno, based on the author of the same name.
Personality: Because Uno died when she was fourteen, her maturity levels aren't the highest, yet she refuses to admit this. In front of guests, she is formal, polite, and at times, blunt or snarky. However, in front of her co-workers, she is more of an oversized rebellious teenager and rather sadistic.
Backstory: Six years ago, Uno visited the circus without adult supervision. She didn't even have a ticket, sneaking in without being caught, or so she thought. The ringmaster had somehow seen her slip through the crowd and after the show, offered a backstage tour. Uno, without anything better to do, agreed. But she never made it out of that tour alive. (this backstory may change)
Ability: Her ability is called 'The Puppet Maker'. It grants her the ability to summon a worn-out, puppet-like creature named Tengu Kyukichi on command. Kyukichi cannot die, if destroyed it respawns. Kyukichi protects Chiyo Uno and listens to her commands no matter the circumstances. Kyukichi can create smaller puppets of other people, as long as it has their DNA. Uno can control these smaller puppets like voodoo dolls.
Occupation: Uno is an outfit designer and performer for the Circus of the Dead. Her act is the last of the show as it is usually when they select guests to join the circus. The process is simple, Uno invites an unknowing participant to the stage, asks them for a piece of hair, and makes Kyukichi turn it into a mini version of themself. Cue the audience's amazement and more willing participants until Uno has a small cast. She does a few tricks and the night ends. Lastly, she invites the participants backstage, just as she had been offered years ago.

YES I KNOW THAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO GET WHOLE NEW IDENTITIES AND NOT REMEMBER THEIR PASTS BUT SHHHH UNO GETS TO KEEP HER NAME UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

NATO launches massive maritime-focused exercise close to Russia
NATO has launched a massive maritime-focused exercise in the Baltic Region, close to Russia.
Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1) taken part in BALTOPS, the premier maritime-focused exercise in the Baltic region.
According to the Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO Public Affairs, between June 7-16, air and maritime assets from 19 NATO allies and partner nations will participate in live training events that include air defence, anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction and mine countermeasure operations.
For the first time, the exercise will be commanded ashore by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) at its headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal through its new maritime operations center.
To ensure the safety and health of participating military personnel, BALTOPS 2020 will take place exclusively at sea. This precaution allows units to enhance multinational operational cooperation, while ensuring that crews remain healthy and ready to provide continuous regional security.
“BALTOPS provides the opportunity for NATO and partner nations to operate together, sharing best practices to improve real world operations,“ said U.S. Vice Adm. Lisa Franchetti, commander, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO and commander, U.S. 6th Fleet. “Although we’ll conduct this year’s event entirely at sea, BALTOPS 2020 will demonstrate our continuous commitment to regional security and reinforce the inherent flexibility of our combined naval force to operate together under any circumstances.”
BALTOPS 2020 is divided into two at sea training phases: the combat enhancement training (CET) and force integration training (FIT) portion and the final tactical phase of the exercise (TACEX).
#BALTOPS 2020 starts TODAY!
Tumblr media
pic.twitter.com/mPIkdJ4z2w
— COM SNMG1 (@COM_SNMG1) June 7, 2020
During the first six days (the CET/FIT phase) ships and aircraft will rehearse common tactics, techniques, and procedures under a scripted programme of events, enabling them to safely operate together as a force.
The exercise will culminate with the TACEX phase where forces will shift into a “free-play” portion, and commanders are given more freedom to run their own tactical programs. The TACEX phase is designed to better represent operating in real world situations.
Participating nations include Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the U.K., and the U.S., with 28 maritime units, 28 aircraft and 3,000 personnel.
BALTOPS, held in the Baltic region since in 1972, is a joint, maritime-focused exercise that brings together NATO Allies and Partners in order to increase interoperability and enhance flexibility among the participants.

The subsea rescue system developed by Saipem in collaboration with Drass was selected by the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) for the equipment of the SDO-SuRS (Special & Diving Operations – Submarine Rescue Ship) ship, the new vessel for the rescue of submarines.
The system integrates a latest generation remote operated vehicle (ROV) with a rescue capsule. The ROV acts as a vector for navigation and control, while the capsule brings submariners back to the surface through a controlled habitat in total safety. The ROV and the capsule are mechanically and electronically tied, forming a single module connected to the vessel via an umbilical cable which contains power lines and optical fibers for power, communication and control.

The entire equipment can be divided into modules and transportable by air. Saipem will supply the ROV and all underwater automation units including the vehicle integrated into the capsule, while Drass will supply the decompression devices, hyperbaric elements, ventilation systems and medical gas treatment systems of the capsule.
The decision of the Italian Navy was reached after a technical evaluation conducted in 2019 during which Saipem and Drass also realized a demonstration prototype successfully tested in the Adriatic Sea.
The engineering and development of automation subsystems have been performed by the “Solutions” business line of Saipem’s Offshore E&C Division in its center of excellence specialized in subsea technologies located in Marghera (Venice).
Francesco Racheli, COO of Saipem Offshore E&C Division, commented: “The collaboration with an Italian entrepreneurial excellence such as Drass for an institution of absolute prestige such as Marina Militare Italiana fits fully into the strategic diversification plan which sees Saipem engaged not only in the energy transition and renewable sources, but also in the development of new strategic segments with high technological and innovation content. Saipem will continue to strengthen this relationship with Marina Militare Italiana by offering its entire portfolio of products for the inspection and surveillance of our seas”.
Sergio Cappelletti, Managing Director of Drass stated: “The historic collaboration of Drass with Marina Militare Italiana is enriched with an exciting new chapter in which the synergy with Saipem brings a cutting-edge technological background deriving from industrial underwater robotics. The consolidation of dual technology in the field of Defense further enhances the extensive specialist heritage that characterizes Drass in the subsea sector. The step we take today is preparatory to larger projects, intended to create a national excellence in the field of underwater technology”.

A diminished ‘Godzilla’ still bests ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Ma’
NEW YORK — The latest iteration of the Godzilla franchise took over the top spot from “Aladdin” and roared louder than Elton John at the weekend box office, but it still left a notably smaller footprint on North American theaters than its city-wrecking predecessors.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s sequel to 2014’s “Godzilla,” was brought down to size by poor reviews and middling interest from moviegoers, selling $49 million in tickets, according to studio estimates Sunday.
While still good enough for No. 1, that total was $10-15 million off industry expectations and close to half of the $93 million debut of the previous “Godzilla” movie.
Still, the weekend, led by one of the most classic movie monsters, brought Hollywood’s summer season into full swing. Last week’s top film, Disney’s live-action, blue-Will Smith “Aladdin” remake, slid to second with $42 million in its second weekend. And a rush of newcomers, including the Elton John biopic “Rocketman” and the Octavia Spencer-led horror film “Ma,” swelled theaters with a variety of options.
Dexter Fletcher’s fantastical Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” starring Taron Egerton, didn’t launch with the same bravado as last year’s Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” But it opened solidly in third with $25 million. The weekend’s most profitable release, by percentage, was likely the Blumhouse Production thriller “Ma,” which made $18.2 million against a $5 million budget.
Even with a toothless “Godzilla,” the weekend was up drastically — 62 percent, according to Comscore — from the same weekend last year, when the swiftly forgotten “Solo” was in its second weekend.
Part of the appeal of giant monster films from a studio standpoint is their popularity in Asia. This “Godzilla” fared best in China, opening there with $70 million. It made $130 million internationally overall.
But in Godzilla, some see a flagging franchise of unrealized potential. In its three recent blockbuster iterations going back to Gareth Edwards’ 1998 Sony release, none have drawn much praise from fans or critics. This latest one, directed by Michael Dougherty, has a 40 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Warner Bros. is developing a face-off movie between Godzilla and King Kong, who was last featured in “Kong: Skull Island.” That 2017 release opened with $61 million and went on to make $566 million worldwide. Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros., believes the $200-million budgeted “King of the Monsters” can keep drawing moviegoers to the studio’s ongoing monster franchises.
“The avid fans of Godzilla came out Thursday and Friday,” said Goldstein. “The real key for us is how broadly can we expand over the next couple weeks? Can we hold on to an interest that’s wider than the regular Godzilla fans? I think we can.”
In Godzilla’s shadow, counterprogramming thrived. Coming off its acclaimed premiere at the Cannes Film Festival , “Rocketman,” which Elton John executive produced, opened well if not spectacularly for Paramount Pictures. The R-rated biopic cost about $40 million to make.
Aiming to capitalize on the British singer’s worldwide appeal, the stars of “Rocketman” have circled the globe ahead of release. It added $19.2 million internationally. In Russia, the film’s local distributor cut out scenes depicting homosexual activity and drug use. John and the filmmakers criticized the move as “a sad reflection of the divided world we still live in.”
Though “Rocketman” shares much with “Bohemian Rhapsody” — including Fletcher, who helmed the Mercury film after Bryan Singer departed production — its makers have sought to distance it from last year’s Oscar-winning $900-million sensation.
“That movie is a unicorn,” Egerton said in Cannes. “Our movie is a different animal.”
“Ma,” fashioned by Blumhouse as the production company’s contemporary answer to “Misery,” reteams Spencer with “The Help” director Tate Taylor. Spencer’s first solo lead performance drew an especially diverse audience, 57 percent of which was female.
“The best news this weekend was for the industry itself,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. “Even if the top movie didn’t earn $100 million, we had a big up weekend and we need more of those to get out of this deficit that we’ve been in since basically the beginning of the year.”
The news, though, wasn’t good for “Booksmart,” the acclaimed teen comedy starring Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever. Amid its disappointing wide-release opening last weekend, director Olivia Wilde appealed on social media for fans to support a movie “made by and about women.” On its second weekend, “Booksmart” couldn’t turn it around, earning $3.3 million on 2,518 screens.
Overseas, Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner “Parasite,” a social satire from Korean director Bong Joon-ho, opened with $24.6 million. That was driven largely by stellar sales in South Korea where Bong’s raucous thriller easily outpaced “Godzilla.”
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
1. “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” $49 million ($130 million international).
2. “Aladdin,” $42.3 million ($78.3 million international).
3. “Rocketman,” $25 million ($19.2 million international).
4. “Ma,” $18.3 million ($2.8 million international).
5. “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” $11.1 million ($12.7 million international).
6. “Avengers: Endgame,” $7.8 million ($8.6 million international).
7. “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” $6.7 million ($14.6 million international).

The 7 Best Islands to Visit in Germany

Rügen

Insel Rügen (island of Rügen) is the ideal German island. Perched above the Baltic Sea on stoic white chalk cliffs (Kreidefelsen) and sandy beaches (some clothes-free), it has attracted visitors throughout the ages from Otto von Bismarck to Sigmund Freud to Albert Einstein. During the time of the GDR, the island was the favored spot of the elite such as Erich Honecker with the famed Romantic painter Caspar David FriedrichIt sharing its popularity with the masses.
Rügen is Germany’s largest island and hosts an impressive range of attractions from swimming and surfing to to sailing. Nationalpark Jasmund — the country's smallest national park — is on the peninsula. Here sits Königsstuhl (King's Chair), a viewing platform rising 118 meters out of the sea. From here you can see primeval beech forests and birds on the fly.
Seaside resorts also dot the coastline with Sassnitz and its museum submarine, Art Nouveau Sellin with its Seebrücke (pier) from 1901, and Binz, the largest resort on the island. Find other highlights in our post on towns of Rügen.
Visitors can cut through the heart of the island on scenic Alleenstrasse, or opt for Rasender Roland (Racing Roland), the historic steam train that runs around the island.

Hiddensee

On this little island west of Rügen, cars are banned and the only way to get around is by bike, horse carriage or on foot — the ultimate cure for the city blues.
Large parts of Hiddensee are designated nature conservation areas as it is the largest island within the national park, Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. The west coast is identified by long sandy beach bordered by dunes. Visit Kloster, Neuendorf, and kid-friendly, gently sloped Vitte to sunbathe when the weather cooperates.
When the clouds roll in, watch for wildlife on the salt marsh and arm up at the many fishing villages.

Mainau

Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German) is the third-biggest lake in Europe and holds islands like well-known Lindau connected by bridge, or the smaller, even more charming Mainau. This tiny, floral island is renowned for its greenhouse butterfly sanctuary — the biggest butterfly house in Germany. It attracts more than a million visitors every year.
While strolling the island, stop to smell the nearly 10,000 rose bushes or find some shade beneath the 150-year-old giant sequoias and Viktoria lime planted by the grand duke in 1862. There is also a 13th-century baroque palace which dates back to the Teutonic Order of Knights who owned the island for almost 500 years.
The island is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Entry in summer is €19.90 (winter discounted to €9.50).

Sylt

Spindly Sylt doesn't have much of an interior, but it does have nearly 40 km of beachfront. Located at the northernmost tip of Germany, the Königin der Nordsee (Queen of the North Sea) has white sand beaches backed up to stunning red cliffs. Rolling dunes let out into spacious beaches where there are usually more seals than people.
Once part of Jutland, there is evidence of inhabitation since 3000 BC. The local dialect of Söl'ring — a mix of Danish, Dutch, and English — is still practiced by some residents, but it is eroding like much of the island.
The island is marked with well-established resort towns like Westerlan, as well as its own nearby deserted island of Amrum. This is also the site of Germany's first official nude beach, established in 1920.

Föhr

Just below Sylt and the Danish border, the island of Föhr is the second largest North Sea island in Germany and a major seaside destination. But don't let this description fool you, it is still cozy at only 12 by 7 kilometers.
The island is surrounded by Wadden Sea, one of the country's must-see UNESCO attractions. Located in a unique tidal basin, it is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world. Visitors can walk from island to island in millimeter deep waters, barely wetting the top of their sneakers. As you walk, watch out for oysters and their even rarer treasure of pearls.
Seagrass meadows protect the many animals who call Föhr home, like harbor seals, porpoises, and migrating birds. Visit in October for the Migratory Bird Days, when an average of 10-12 million pass through the island.

Museum Island

You might not even notice that some of Berlin's best museums are on an island. Museumsinsel sits amidst the action in the center of the city, covertly connected by broad bridges. The island is one of only three UNESCO World Heritage sites in the capital.
This historic ensemble of five world-class museums showcases everything from the famous bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti to master European paintings. Each museum was built under a different Prussian king and features the distinct style of their time. The renowned Pergamon has undergone several long-term renovations and is currently set to re-open in 2019.
Along with the museums, the re-constructed Berlin Palace is currently a work in progress and will incorporate the Ethnological Museum of Berlin and the Museum of Asian Art.

Usedom

Usedom, in the Baltic, has long been divided between Germany and Poland. Most of the island belongs to the German district of Vorpommern-Greifswald while the eastern section (and largest city of Świnoujście) belong to Polish West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Despite its location so far north, it is one of the sunniest locations in Germany and labels itself the Sonneninsel (Sunny Island). Visitors can park themselves in a strandkorb (German beach chair) on the 45 km of coastline and make use of all the amenities at resorts like Drei Kaiserbäder, Bernsteinbäder, Ostseebäder, and Zempin. Scenic piers let you walk right out on the water.
If you get off the beach, take advantage of the expansive cycling routes, horse riding paths, and thermal spas. Usedoms Botanischer Garten Mellenthinis worth leaving the sand with 50,000 plants neatly arranged in 14 geographic areas like Latin, German, and Polish.
When you retire at night, there is no need to leave the sea. The island's historic lighthouse is nearly 100 years old and has been transformed into a three-level, private, mini-hotel. It features 24-foot ceilings, wooden Jacuzzi, and a wrap-around balcony that showcases the one-of-a-kind view.

To grasp the ramifications of such moves, some background on the former PACOM might be useful.  Originally known as the Far East Command, PACOM was established in 1947 and has been headquartered at U.S. bases near Honolulu, Hawaii, ever since.  As now constituted, its “area of responsibility” encompasses a mind-boggling expanse: all of East, South, and Southeast Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and the waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans — in other words, an area covering about 50% of the Earth’s surface and incorporating more than half of the global population.  Though the Pentagon divides the whole planet like a giant pie into a set of “unified commands,” none of them is larger than the newly expansive, newly named Indo-Pacific Command, with its375,000 military and civilian personnel.
Before the Indian Ocean was explicitly incorporated into its fold, PACOM mainly focused on maintaining control of the western Pacific, especially in waters around a number of friendly island and peninsula states like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.  Its force structure has largely been composed of air and naval squadrons, along with a large Marine Corps presence on the Japanese island of Okinawa.   Its most powerful combat unit is the U.S. Pacific Fleet — like the area it now covers, the largest in the world.  It’s made up of the 3rd and 7th Fleets, which together have approximately 200 ships and submarines, nearly 1,200 aircraft, and more than 130,000 sailors, pilots, Marines, and civilians.
With the possibility of war with North Korea fading in the wake of the recent Singapore summit, one thing is guaranteed: the new U.S. Indo-Pacific Command will only devote itself ever more fervently to what is already its one overriding priority: preparing for a conflict with China.  Its commanders insist that they do not seek such a war, and believe that their preparations — by demonstrating America’s strength and resolve — will deter the Chinese from ever challenging American supremacy.  That, however, is a fantasy.  In reality, a strategy that calls for a “steady drumbeat” of naval operations aimed at intimidating China in waters near that country will create ever more possibilities, however unintended, of sparking the very conflagration that it is, at least theoretically, designed to prevent.
Right now, a Sino-American war sounds like the plotline of some half-baked dystopian novel.  Unfortunately, given the direction in which both countries (and their militaries) are heading, it could, in the relatively near future, become a grim reality.
