💯 all of this: RP @pedal2thepeople⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Riding a bicycle while Black.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That was the “crime” Dijon Kizzee committed when he was murdered at the hands of police. Another murder, another Black life we mourn. If Dijon were white and had committed a mass shooting, he’d be alive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dijon’s tragic murder exposes the contradictions of the police and its flawed message inscribed on each patrol car: to protect and serve. To protect whom? To serve whom?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dijon deserved freedom of movement. Instead his life was taken from him. He was stopped for a minor “code violation”. Much like the Black codes during the Jim Crow South which restricted the freedoms of Black people, today’s minor code violations are justification to stop and harass Black and Brown people. The manufactured code violation Dijon was stopped for is equivalent to riding your bike on the sidewalk. How many white people ride their bikes on the sidewalk? How many cyclists in college towns never stop at stop signs. You see where we’re going with this… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dijon’s case intersects so many struggles we’re fighting for: mobility justice, the protection of Black life, and the transformation of most police policies into community services. After George Floyd’s murder we saw glimpses of a revolution for Black liberation. We even saw the bike community show up in ways never seen before.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But as time has passed we’ve seen the outrage lose steam. Collectively, we all need to keep fighting for justice. Dijon, George Floyd, and Breonna Tayler should be alive.
