💯 all of this: RP @pedal2thepeople⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Riding a bicycle while Black.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That was the “crime” Dijon Kizzee committed when he was murdered at the hands of police. Another murder, another Black life we mourn. If Dijon were white and had committed a mass shooting, he’d be alive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dijon’s tragic murder exposes the contradictions of the police and its flawed message inscribed on each patrol car: to protect and serve. To protect whom? To serve whom?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dijon deserved freedom of movement. Instead his life was taken from him. He was stopped for a minor “code violation”. Much like the Black codes during the Jim Crow South which restricted the freedoms of Black people, today’s minor code violations are justification to stop and harass Black and Brown people. The manufactured code violation Dijon was stopped for is equivalent to riding your bike on the sidewalk. How many white people ride their bikes on the sidewalk? How many cyclists in college towns never stop at stop signs. You see where we’re going with this… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dijon’s case intersects so many struggles we’re fighting for: mobility justice, the protection of Black life, and the transformation of most police policies into community services. After George Floyd’s murder we saw glimpses of a revolution for Black liberation. We even saw the bike community show up in ways never seen before.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But as time has passed we’ve seen the outrage lose steam. Collectively, we all need to keep fighting for justice. Dijon, George Floyd, and Breonna Tayler should be alive. Finishing with a picnic on the shores of Derwentwater. A moderate walk of approx. 8km, a short steep section of ascent which involves some minor scrambling. We had to drive up to Cincy from FL for a not fun reason so of course I had to make the most of a road trip and get in some adventuring this Labor Day Weekend. We asked @pedalhomie, co-founder of @pedal2thepeople and freelance photographer to share a few words about their work in cycling photography and their goal with @pedal2thepeople, here’s what they shared: . “I center people of color in my photography. Often people of color are dehumanized in society, and through the use of photography I want to rehumanize us, by showing us doing joyful things, like mountain biking. Doing things in nature helps replenish us to fight against oppressive structures beyond the cycling world. Biking helps us live and experience momentary happiness. As people of color we need to be happy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The camera can be a tool for good but it can also be a weapon, acting as an extension of racist frameworks. Which is why it important to have POC as photographers, who consciously aim to portray the complex narratives of people of color. When we think of representation we think of capturing people in front of the lens, but to me representation needs to factor in the people who are behind the lens. How we are represented in imagery is crucial to our storytelling.” . Racism in the Outdoors There are many barriers for BAME people in the outdoors, a key one is that the outdoors is seen as an Exclusive White Club, steeped in RACISM at all levels. Here's a short extract of an example from local businesses in a National Park: "Guests just arrived. Supposed to be 3pm they are relatives of those we saw on the beach... scarves round their head OMG what will the neighbours say." The group educated the individual who owned the business. "BAME tourists checking in to their accommodation was asked for ID, white guests were not" These are just two of many examples of Racism I have come across in the Outdoors. This is the daily lived experience of BAME people in accessing the Outdoors, from individuals to service providers and businesses. Feedback from FA who attend outdoor residential as a young person in the 80's. Shows the important contribution of a positive outdoor experience to the development of young people. "In brief the impact of several opportunities to take part in organised “away from home” outdoor activities can’t be easily measured. It was many years ago but a truly formative experience which led in adulthood to myself running similar activities for my children and others. The original experience shaped and built my confidence to do many non traditional activities including a successful career in the emergency services. The key point was having someone from your own community leading on something that is normally not associated with BAME groups. It opened our eyes and connected us not only to the great outdoors and environment but to people from other communities. Cannot stress how important outdoor activity led by people like Mohammed are. The positive impact is life changing and the change goes way beyond the actual event. It gets you to understand that you are a lot more capable than you think you are. The experience is never forgotten."
