800 Congress Workers now under the BJP Flag
With the elections so near, India has transformed into a fierce battlefield. And the armies are the various Indian Political Parties.
A big lot twist has come to happen in the chapter on Gujarat.
On the 1st of April, the world was celebrating April Fool's Day. And Poonamben Maadam, Jamnagar BJP candidate, was turning the tides for the Jamnagar elections.
About 800 Congress party members and workers broke away from the political party and joined the BJP. Poonamben Maadam, BJP Candidate, State Cabinet Minister, Mulu Bera and District BJP President, Mayur Gadhvi saw the ceremony.
The event is now being seen as a demonstration of the BJP's power over its native land of Gujarat. The state has always been improved under the rule of the Bhartiya Janta Party, so this was to be expected. But the sheer number of workers changing their affiliation was unexpected.
The leaders who switched over include
Dwarka district Congress General Secretary,
District Panchayat member Ebha Karmur,
Opposition Leader and Taluka Panchayat member Yogesh Nandania,
Taluka Panchayat members Laxman Chavda, Malsi Dahiya,
Dwarka Congress OBC Cell President Kishan Bhatia,
Dwarka district Youth Congress President Savan Karmur,
APMC director of Khambhaliya Babu Gojia, and 14 Sarpanches.
This is a major move by Poonamben Maadam, who welcomed the leaders to the BJP side at a meeting in Khambhaliya alongside two others. This is another move by the Jamnagar MP towards a definitive win in the coming elections. The Bhartiya Janta Party has these elections in the bag.
'Expect the unexpected' seems to be coming true with Poonamben Maadam.

Apni Party demands the holding of party-based elections for Panchayats and ULBs
Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari asks party cadres to gear up for the upcoming elections
Shakir bhat
Srinagar, May 18: Apni Party on Thursday demanded the holding of upcoming Panchayat and ULB polls on party-bases.
The demand came to the fore after the party passed a resolution seeking party-based election for the proposed Panchayat and ULB polls. The resolution, presented by the party's State Secretary Muntazir Mohiuddin and supported by Provincial President Mohammad Ashraf Mir, received unanimous approval.
Besides senior leaders, the meeting held at the party headquarters in Srinagar, was attended by all the zonal leaders and senior workers from the Srinagar district, a press release said.
On this occasion, the party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari asked the party leaders and grassroots cadres to prepare themselves for the forthcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and Panchayat polls and assured them that with the significant public support received by the Apni Party, it will emerge as the primary victor in the electoral contest.
According to the press release, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, while addressing the meeting, said that, unlike the traditional political parties, Apni Party would refrain from engaging in political gimmicks and the politics of false promises, instead it would promise to implement its robust developmental agenda.
He said, "As we know, it has become a common practise for traditional political parties to allure their voters through deceptive promises and emotional slogans. However, we firmly believe in upholding the trust of our people, so we will never mislead them. Instead, we will guarantee our voters that we will implement our development agenda if we are mandated to serve them."
Urging party leaders and grassroots cadres to gear up for the upcoming ULB and Panchayat polls, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said, "It is of utmost importance for you to stay connected with the masses in your respective constituencies. By doing so, you can raise awareness among the voters regarding our party's vision and objectives."
He further said, "Besides making people aware of our agenda and policies, we also must make them aware of the deceptive politics of the traditional political parties, who have always misled the people through deceptive political narratives that eventually brought miseries to the people over the course of the past several decades."
"Their misleading political narratives and emotional slogans have landed thousands of youths either in jails or in graveyards, especially during the past three decades. Therefore, it becomes our responsibility to remind people of the false promises made by these parties. The hollow rhetoric and deceptive promises such as guaranteeing a "plebiscite," "autonomy," "self-rule," and other similar pledges have resulted in the incarceration or loss of thousands of young lives during all these years. Apni Party will not allow this political gimcrackery to continue any further because the J&K people cannot bear the burden of further bloodshed, destruction, and loss of life. It is imperative that we prevent any more suffering in this region." He added.
The prominent leaders who were present on the occasion included Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Junaid Azim Mattu, Muntazir Mohiuddin, Noor Mohammad Sheikh, Haji Parvez, Jagmohan Raina, Dilshada Shaheen, Bilal Bhat, Khalid Rathore, Muzaffar Hussain Reshi, Ashraf Palpori, Tanveer Pathan, Shoaib Dar, Aijaz Rather, Mohammad Ashraf Dar, Jeelani Kumar, Mohsin Zaffar Shah, Mohammad Shafi Mir, Ali Mohammad Rather, Mohammad Shaban Chopan, Shabir Ahmad Reshi, Kaisar Ganai, Aijaz Ahmad Khan, and others.

Yogi magic fails in Meerut-Saharanpur as BJP loses 64 of 90 municipal seats
The poll result has become a major concern for the BJP as the data showed that Yogi Adityanath’s magic did not work in the rural and semi-urban areas.
In the recent UP civic polls, the BJP may have been able to win all the 17 Nagar Nigam seats and logged a landslide victory but the numbers in the western part of the state, especially in Meerut, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur divisions, did not signify the impact of the Yogi wave at the Nagar Palika and the Nagar Panchayat levels.
This has become a major concern for the party as the data showed that Yogi Adityanath’s magic did not work in the rural and semi-urban areas.
In the Meerut-Saharanpur division, except for the mayor’s seat, the BJP’s magic did not work. The saffron party lost 64 of the 90 seats in the municipality and the panchayat presidentships in both the mandals. The BJP candidates could win only on 26 seats and independent candidates have worked their magic in cities like Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, and Ghaziabad. Importantly, these are the districts where the BJP was reduced to just one seat each.
In both the mandals, the BJP got the maximum number of seats in the municipal bodies from Bulandshahr. Of this, nine chairmen are from the BJP. Even though the BJP’s campaign revolved around the impact of Yogi Adityanath’s governance and benefits of flagship schemes, it could not transcend into votes in these divisions.
Talking about leaders, General VK Singh (Retd.) is an MP from Ghaziabad. Sanjeev Balyan is a Union minister from Muzaffarnagar. Apart from these, Narendra Kashyap from Ghaziabad, Somendra Tomar and Dinesh Khatik from Meerut, Kunwar Brijesh Singh from Deoband, KP Malik from Baghpat, Jaswant Saini from Saharanpur are also state ministers. Also, there is one Rajya Sabha MP each in Ghaziabad-Noida and two in Meerut. But this could not get the numbers in their favour.
Similarly, the BJP’s state organization general secretary Dharampal is from the Bijnor district. State vice president of BJP Mohit Beniwal Shamli, state ministers Dr Chandramohan and Amit Valmiki are from Bulandshahr, state minister Basant Tyagi is from Ghaziabad. The exercise to deploy ministers on ground could not work for the BJP.
As the reason for BJP’s defeat has been said to be about the ticket claimants damaging approach, there was a huge uproar in the party over the distribution. There were open allegations of money exchanging hands in the distribution of tickets. In Bulandshahr, the BJP gave tickets on two seats to candidates who joined the party just a year back. The old workers, who did not get the chairman’s ticket, contested the elections as rebels and got the votes.
On the other hand, in Noida’s Jewar seat, a candidate who joined BJP a few days before the election was given a ticket. The BJP cadre turned revolted and the result was that the candidate finished at the fourth spot. The BJP also lost Loni, Khoda and Muradnagar seats in Ghaziabad due to infighting. The candidates who did not get a ticket fought against the party as independents, creating a triangular fight.

After the rise, rift reigns among the Communists. The Himalayan republic plunged into a political crisis after Prime Minister K.P. Oli, faced with intra-party challenges, got Parliament dissolved
The Communist Party of Nepal was officially established in 1949 in Calcutta with the active support of the Indian communists
After the Naxalite movement in Nepal, a set of radical leftists went on to set up the Communist Party of Nepal (ML) in 1978. During the same time, another group of Communists formed the Maoist Fourth Convention
In 2018, Oli’s UML and the Maoist faction, led by Prachanda, merged to form the Nepal Communist Party. The NCP is now headed towards a split after PM Oli dissolved Parliament
Srinivasan Ramani
The abrupt decision by Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to get Parliament dissolved by the President Bidhya Devi Bhandari (a former party colleague of Mr. Oli) before its five-year term came as a jolt of surprise. The ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) enjoys a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives of the federal Parliament and controls two-thirds or more seats in six of the seven provincial assemblies. This act of brinkmanship by Mr. Oli came about as a reaction to the internal strife within the NCP, which was formed in 2018 after the merger of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) — of which Mr. Oli was a prominent leader — and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist-Centre), led by Pushpa Kumar Dahal alias Prachanda.
Mr. Oli was under pressure from the faction led by Mr. Dahal to resign from his posts as chairman of the NCP and Prime Minister, ostensibly for his poor performance. With a majority of the nine-member secretariat siding with Mr. Dahal, Mr. Oli decided to recommend the dissolution of Parliament as a means to stall any change in leadership within the party. As things stand, the NCP is functioning as two separate factions. The Dahal-led faction has named senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal as co-chairman and expelled Mr. Oli from his post in the party. The Dahal-Nepal faction has also led street protests calling the decision to dissolve Parliament “unconstitutional” even as the Supreme Court is hearing the case.
While Mr. Oli and Mr. Dahal are the key leaders in their respective factions, the divisions are not on the lines of the former UML and Maoist parties. Mr. Dahal is supported by Mr. Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal, both former Prime Ministers, who had been senior leaders in the UML, while Mr. Oli, for now, retains the support of Ram Bahadur Thapa, currently the Minister for Home Affairs and a former Maoist leader.
Domino effect
The domino effect of Mr. Oli’s decision seems to be interminably pushing the NCP into a split. Even the Communist Party of China got into the act — the Vice-President of its International Department, Guo Yezhou, who had last visited Kathmandu before the unification of the two communist parties into the NCP, visited the country with a delegation to assess the post-dissolution scenario and to explore the possibility of keeping the NCP united. The Indian establishment, known in the past to have extensive parleys with various political forces in Nepal, chose to remain “hands-off” this time.
The intrigue in the NCP is not surprising. The communist movement in Nepal had undergone several splits and mergers in the past. The Communist Party of Nepal was officially established in 1949 in Calcutta and with the active support of the Indian communists. The party was banned from 1952 to 1956 during what was an interim democratic period, before general elections were held in 1959. The communists won only four out of the 109 seats in Parliament. Following the dissolution of the Nepali Congress government by King Mahendra in 1960, Nepal reverted to a “Panchayat system” under absolute monarchy and remained so until 1990. In this period, the communist movement underwent several splits into factions and parties.
In the aftermath of the Naxalite movement in Nepal, a set of radical leftists sought to bring about violent actions in the eastern district of Jhapa — Mr. Oli was one of those who were part of the “Jhapeli movement” and was later arrested for his role. The former members of the Jhapeli group went on to set up the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist) in 1978. During the same time, another set of radical communists, inspired by Maoist ideology, formed the Fourth Convention group in 1974, and was led by Mohan Bikram Singh.
The CPN (ML) had emerged as the largest communist party in Nepal in 1990 and after having participated prominently in the first Jan Andolan — the movement that led to the institution of constitutional monarchy — it became the leading opposition party. The CPN (ML) had by now become the CPN (UML), after merging with the CPN-Marxist. The UML formed a minority government under Manmohan Adhikari in 1994 that lasted only nine months and later underwent another split, with senior leader Bamdev Gautam breaking away in 1998. Mr. Gautam is now part of the NCP and is aligned with Mr. Dahal.
The Maoist Fourth Convention also underwent splits — with one group termed CPN-Mashal led by Mr. Dahal and another, CPN-Masal, led by Baburam Bhattarai. Besides, the CPN-Fourth Congress had been led by Nirmal Lama till 1990. These parties came together and formed the CPN-Unity Centre whose political front, the United People’s Front Nepal (UPFN), was led by Mr. Bhattarai. Unlike the UML, which accepted parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, the UPFN still retained a line striving for “people’s democracy” — electoral democracy leading to communist rule — and came up with a list of 40 demands that included a federal restructuring of Nepal and a secular state. They also issued an ultimatum that the party will initiate insurgency if the demands were not met. This led to the Maoist insurgency with Mr. Dahal at the helm. It lasted a decade before the Maoists joined hands with the parliamentary forces — the Nepali Congress, the UML and others to form an eight-party alliance that repudiated the monarchy. The Jan-Andolan of 2007 led to the formation of a newly elected Constituent Assembly (CA) and later the transition into a constitutional republic.
State restructuring
The post-CA polity underwent a clear demarcation on the question of state restructuring with the Nepali Congress and the UML firmly opposed to a federal republic that had provinces delineated on the basis of identity. The Maoists and Terai-based (Madhesi) parties were in favour of it. But in the second CA elections, following a protracted stalemate on this issue, the UML and the Congress emerged victorious with Mr. Oli coming out as a major voice of the status quo against ethnic federalism.
Mr. Oli managed to portray Madhesis’ struggle for ethnic determination as Indian interference and won power in 2017 by positioning himself as a nationalist and having aligned with Mr. Dahal’s Maoist faction that had significantly weakened in the 2010s (and had dropped its insistence on ethnic determination of federal boundaries). Mr. Oli, however, retained both the post of party chairman (shared with Mr. Dahal) and the premiership following the merger.
Unlike the major twists and turns in the communist movement in Nepal, which were driven by ideological positions of the leftists who were mostly in opposition, this split in the NCP seems to be driven more by a clash of egos and ambitions. The NCP has emerged over time as a major dispenser of patronage by controlling NGOs that receive international aid for development work. For leaders, being in power is key to maintaining their networks of support which explains the shifts in loyalty bereft of any ideological difference in the party that is now headed to a clear split.
