Hello! Playing devil's advocate here, but surely we'd at least have had an announcement for s5 by now if tjlc was real and s5 was really coming? Doesn't it maybe seem more likely that the signs pointing to s5 and tjlc were a combination of being led on ("fans will be desperate for s5"), queerbaiting (some of the more obvious (which, tbh, most were) indicators of johnlock), reading too much into things (some of the less obvious indicators) and coincidence (the whole fourth pip thing)? Again, devil's advocate - I personally do think there are a couple too many loose threads for no s5 - but I'd be interested in your answer
Hi there. We’re not sure what kind of answer you’re really looking for and what your knowledge base/experience is with tjlc, so we’ll try to answer in the simplest way possible while covering our bases.
First, if any part of you is asking these questions because it’s coming from a place of insecurity and needing confirmation before allowing yourself to “hope,” then we’re not the people to ask. That is not a healthy way to engage with a TV show theory, nor is it an objective way to engage with it. It’s important to not doubt your ability to cope with being “wrong.” As my therapist once put it, “confident” people don’t have confidence that they will never make a mistake, rather they know they can handle their reaction to mistakes. Mistakes will not shatter their happiness or make them a total failure. It is the fear of doubt and being wrong which will hold you back more than healthy skepticism ever will (This advice may not apply to you, but it does apply to a fair number of people past and present).
That being said…there isn’t one single piece of evidence (or even two or three) I could offer that would sell a potential series 5 without the added context of everything tjlc related. If you’re waiting for S5 to be announced before you fully engage with tjlc on an intellectual level, then there’s nothing I could say. If you are still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, then the most complete argument for S5 (& tjlc in general really) is to look at BBC Sherlock holistically as having a five-act structure. With some emotional distance, it was much more obvious post-S4, but this analysis goes back to July 2016 if not earlier.
Besides this, the argument that it “seems more likely that the signs pointing to s5 and tjlc were a combination of being led on . . . queerbaiting . . . reading too much into things . . . and coincidence” cannot be simply contested in just this one post. We’ve argued against these things ad nauseum for years. If S5 is announced, this will not make all doubts about tjlc dissipate over night. It will not convince people of tjlc on its own and, frankly, nor should it.
“surely we'd at least have had an announcement for s5 by now if tjlc was real and s5 was really coming?” I do not have a bullet-proof answer to this nor do I pretend to fully understand what their reasons have been for waiting. They could have waited to announce it simply because they are in no personal hurry, because of Martin & Ben’s schedules and/or the pandemic (at least in part.) Regardless, there’s too much we don’t know to definitively say what their reasons are or are not.
The most compelling argument imo for why they have waited this long at all, has always been the inescapable fact that there are multiple Sherlock Holmes stories which remain under copyright until 2023. Even in 2020 Doyle’s estate tried to sue Netlfix because Enola Holmes depicted Holmes as ‘respectful of women,’ as well as too ‘emotional’ and ‘empathetic,’ arguing that he only fits these descriptions in the stories which were under copyright at the time. Their argument is terrible and there are definite holes so thankfully it was dismissed. But if these are the sort of details they would be willing to squabble over then surely an adaptation that dared to depict and "re-interpret" canon to say Holmes is gay would no doubt kick up controversy at the very least and probably lawsuits. As far as I know there wasn’t the same controversy/lawsuit over Watson being secretly in unrequited love with Holmes in The Irregulars, but Holmes' sexuality is another story altogether especially since many would sooner argue he did not have one at all.
Given all of the above, at this point why not wait until 2023 to bring back the show at all? Especially, if they plan to reference the specific stories under copyright. Even if they thought the estate would lose, why risk it or the hassle? Maybe they will announce it this year or 2023, or maybe not. If they don’t, our opinions won’t change any time soon, but nevertheless we cannot argue that they absolutely must have already announced S5 by now for our theory to be right that they plan to make a 5th, let alone tjlc.

My vampire obsession slowly creeping back into the back of my mind and i’m so hapy about it
big lessons learnt in 2020:
I’m disturbingly unaffected in the long run for being almost completely alone for half a year, social distancing and keeping the corona-related curfew and other rules
My ADHD is definitely worse when my flatmate isn’t here to keep me in line
I’m still procrastinating way too recklessly and it should bite me in the arse soon enough
I’m way too much more of an asshole than i’d actually like to be so i really should work on that more than i already do
The past years i became more and more impatient and i have to work on that too
what you’re looking forward to in 2021:
Finally getting rid of universitiy for the rest of my life
Maybe being able to go to theatres again
Maybe being able to go to concerts again
ToA Rise of the Titans
Finally going home for a bit after half a year (in addition: maybe..maybe being able to meet my brother again later this year)
Tagging: aaaah i don’t know if anyone would want to do it? Maybe @isawhisperer , @nikibogwater and @littlerainsworld ? But no obligations as per usual of course! Or if any of you want to do this, feel free to @me because if i’d know you want to do it, i’d tag you!

Distances in Enola Holmes (2020): Railway Route Analysis
[[Previous]] ☼ [[Menu]] ☼ [[Next]]
For such a short segment of the movie, the railway route is incredibly complex. I'm going to break it down here, and add images in a later post.
Landmarks for the railway
I'd recommend cross-referencing with this post.
Basilwether Station.
Forested hills
Soon after leaving the station, the train crosses a bridge over a river or canal. On the opposite side, there is a farm with a large house and horses, and apparently some sort of bare land. Past the farm, the train curves right.
The train is passing through countryside (interspersed woods and pastureland, no crops) when Tewkesbury escapes the carpet bag. The view from the window suggests the railway follows the course of a river, stream, or canal. The water feature is on the left, with more fields beyond.
Train curving left, upslope on left downslope on right
The train passes through a tunnel, but the water feature appears to continue in the same relative placement on the other side. The track is curving left as it goes through.
The cliff-side of the tunnel is exposed, suggesting that it had been hewn inward to facilitate tunneling.
Countryside (interspersed woods and pastureland, no crops), river on right, uphill slope on left, occasional walls or low hedgerows, still no passing settlements
The train climbs an uphill slope as it approaches the next bridge. The river is on the right, while the left features a wooded uphill slope. There is another ahead on the right side of the river. There are at least three layers of hills ahead, and two behind.
The bridge at the Jump Scene has eleven visible piers, with nine apparently reaching into the riverbed and the other two sunk into the exposed cliffs. The river curves gently left, while the railroad curves right. We do not see the protagonists cross it.
According to this prop [image], the bridge is called the Stephens Viaduct. I will use this name going forward.
The Stephens Viaduct passes over a rather tall river gorge.
Hills on left, cliffs continue along river bank on left side.
Tumblr media
Simplified diagram of train sequence, with the viaduct at the top.
Looking out for, in order:
1 canal/river

Another river or canal, with viaduct

Dear Yuletide Writer
For Booksmart:
I'd like to see Jared fail-boating through life, maybe with Molly, maybe without. We got to see Amy and Molly's coming of age and his doesn't have to coincide with theirs, but I'd like some insight as to what makes Jared tick. If he sees Molly after a long period apart, even better, but really just an introspective piece on Jared growing up.
For Enola Holmes (2020):
I’d like very much to see Enola get to know her brothers better, perhaps continue to dodge them, but in a fashion in that they grow to understand each other better despite their continued distance. I'm down for Enola/Tewks, but not as the main focus. Looking for Holmes Family Feels, primarily.
For The Queen’s Thief Series:
What conversations are the gods having about Gen and company? What pushes them so much that they literally tell him "Stop whining" and "Go to bed", much like an exhausted parent would? I'd like to see that point of view.
EDIT/UPDATE:
Now that we’ve gotten our prompts in return, it occurs to me that any of these three can be considered... fairly narrow as prompts? If by chance you, Dear Yuletide Author, are familiar with only one of these fandoms and feel limited by what I wrote here, you don’t have to stick exactly to them. Basically, I love self-discovery and happy endings - as long as those are there, go wild!

❍❍❍ FILM ❍❍❍
The first television shows were experimental, sporadic programs that from the 1930s could only be seen at a very short distance from the mast. TV events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the crowning of King George VI. In Britain in 19340 and the famous launch of David Sarnoff at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the United States, the medium grew, but World War II brought development to a halt after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television, and in 1948 the popular Texaco Star Theater radio moved to become the first weekly television variety show that hosted Milton Berle and earned the name “Mr Television” demonstrated The medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment that could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the United States took place on September 4, 1951, when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco on AT & T’s transcontinental cable and microwave relay system was broadcasting to broadcasters in local markets has been. The first national color show (the 1954 Rose Parade tournament) in the United States took place on January 1, 1954. For the next ten years, most network broadcasts and almost all local broadcasts continued to be broadcast in black and white. A color transition was announced for autumn 1965, in which more than half of all network prime time programs were broadcast in color. The first all-color peak season came just a year later. In 19402, the last holdout of daytime network shows was converted to the first full color network season.

Just some thoughts on distances in Enola Holmes
Basilwether Station and Basilwether House
We know it's driveable from Miss Lonsdale's, and we know it was in late morning that they started out. We know that Miss Lonsdale's school faces southish, because she can see from the window that they have escaped, and that morning the sunlight was coming through when Sherlock was there and the same when Miss Lonsdale looks out the window. So... probably they leave before noon... and arrived after dark at Basilwether House. Nine to twelve hours.
Apparently, the average speed of one motorcar from the period was about 26 mph at the time.... [1] But that's not accounting for road conditions, terrain, etc. If we do... well, I don't know how to account for that. But I'd be surprised if they actually made it past 10 mph. (About that of a horse and buggy at a trot.) [2] And, more conveniently, the same as Google Maps' estimated speed for bikes! [3]) Which makes the estimate given by some authors on AO3 not unlikely.
If that's the case, they could have a radius of 120 miles, maximum, in a straight line. OR less than that.
Option 1: Hertfordshire (Herts)
One option for Basilwether is in Hertfordshire. [4] We know that it is on a rail line, of course, because of Basilwether Station, and that it is not the same one as Enola's. We know it is possible to take an express train to London from there, and that the line crosses at least one viaduct and countryside. Walking, it takes... well, Enola and Tewkesbury could have stopped at dark, which is probably 9:00ish given the latitude and summer months, but it seems they stopped a few hours before, so evening, and they had started walking around 9:30 or so given their chase down the train... so, about 9 hours, maximum.
Let's have a moment of silence for their poor feet.
Done? Okay then, let's continue.
Then, we see they have hitched a ride to get into London the next day. So they could have been pretty close to London, but not far enough to make it the night before. A horsedrawn cart goes, at a walk, about 2-4 mph, and we can see that the sun hasn't fully gone over the horizon. Point is, about 10 hours, probably averaging 1 mph, so 9 miles. So... the viaduct might be as little as 10 miles from the outskirts of London of the time.
Add to that maybe 15 minutes at the speed of an express train of the period. Which is 80 mph or thereabouts. Maybe a little less, but I'm rounding for simplicity. [5] Because 15 minutes at 80 mph is 20 miles. (OR, citing this writer here, about 40 mph. Making it 10 miles over that 15... yikes.)
Making for a total distance of 30 miles (or 20) from Basilwether to London. So perhaps somewhere in North Hertfordshire. [6]
Option 2: Herefordshire
Bluestpaw, I believe, is using this as an estimate... but I feel it is worth noting that Tewkesbury is less than ten miles (16km) from Herefordshire. It does not explain the mystery letter, but the proximity to an eponym puts this a strong contender, especially given that it would take 9 hours to drive there at 10 mph from London.

Thoughts on Distances in Enola Holmes: Basilwether Hall and Station Part II
[[Previous]] ☼ [[Menu]] ☼ [[Next]]
In a previous installment of this series, I tried to narrow down the maximum distances that Basilwether Hall and Basilwether Station (hereon called "Basilwether") could be located, based on a selection of likely values for the journey to London. This provided us with about a thousand potential distances, all of which suggest that Basilwether might be located as far as seventy miles of the center of London, but it had the benefit of establishing an area of interest for our search. Now, let's see if we can narrow things down further. To do this, I will review different forms of evidence, and then tease out some additional details for further information. I will map my findings, then look for locations where they intersect.
1. Methodology
1.1 RANGE RING SELECTION
As I worked on this segment, I discovered that the sheer number of range rings representing viable maximum distances was becoming a visual impediment in the maps. As filtering them out was not an option without the very analysis I was preparing to do, I selected the highest and lowest radii as benchmarks. In deference to other placements I have seen proposed, I opted to also represent maximum radii for longer train journeys— theoretical straight-line distances for 20, 30, and 60-minutes, with all other values set to their maximum possible.
1.2 EVIDENCE
1.2.1 The Station
"I couldn't go to my local station, of course, so I chose a different line altogether."
Enola is able to access Basilwether Station without a bike.
The station opens directly into the countryside, and is apparently surrounded by trees. (21m40s)
Hills are visible in the surrounding area.
The train is labeled with "GWR"-- Great Western Railway. The Station has a sign that says either "GWR" or "CWR" (22m16s)
Looking out for:
Two rail lines
20 miles or less from more hills
Hills near Basilwether should extend in one direction no less than four miles
Rivers
1.2.2 The Railway to London
A detailed list of landmarks for the railway:
See this for some discussion on what might prompt the tunnel to be built like that.
1.2.3 The Walk
After the jump, the protagonists seem to roughly follow within sight distance of the river. This time, it appears to be on their left.
While on the train, it was on the right. (Perhaps they had to backtrack, at the very least to find an appropriate spot to cross the river.)
We do not see the river again after about 30m30s.
1.2.4 Basilwether Hall
The coat of arms of the Marquess of Basilwether: Colors unknown, tierced per fess, in the first an eagle displayed, in the second three lions rampant, in the third a griffin segreant. The supporters are, right and left, a griffin and a lion. Motto: Honorem et officium.
Basilwether Hall is quite large, apparently similar to Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, and apparently the estate has been in the Dowager's family for generations.
Basilwether House has woodland nearby.
1.2.5 Other
1.2.5.1 Filming Locations
This image names a probable county for Basilwether.
Kidderminster Town Railway Station, where the scenes at Basilwether Station were filmed [Source], is on the Severn Valley Heritage Railway, and was built in 1996. The building design is based on the GWR Ross-on-Wye station, which opened in 1890. [Source]
The first bridge that we see the railway cross is portrayed by Victoria Bridge, Worcestershire. [Source]
Basilwether Hall is portrayed by Hatfield House, Hertfordshire.
Tewkesbury's treehouse was set on Ashridge Estate, Hertfordshire.
1.2.5.2 Toponymy
Placenames have already been discussed in a prior post. It was a longshot, but it is worth noting that within our interest area, we find names similar to Basilwether near Birmingham, in Berkshire, and Hampshire. The name Tewkesbury is probably associated with the famous abbey and market town in Gloucestershire. Unfortunately, this town only occurs within the maximum limit for the estimates for an hour-long train ride.
Linguistic evidence suggests Birmingham, Upper and Lower Basildon in Berkshire, and Wether Down in Hampshire, and when accounting for Ferndell, Hampshire/West Sussex, Worcestershire/Birmingham (formerly Worcestershire)/Warwickshire, and Berkshire.
1.3 MAPPING
Reviewing the evidence supplied several criteria that could be mapped out— borders, topology, rivers, even railroads. Mostly, they are quite rough, and I cannot vouch for their reliability beyond the general area. But where my research permitted or required me to attempt greater detail, I sought to maintain consistency with 1880s geography. Thus, when I came across this map of waterways, I deleted those that were built after 1900.
Following data collection, I used Google Earth Pro to produce the KML files for the following criteria clearly visible for the viewer:
Counties suggested in props
Hills
Rivers
Railways
In addition, I charted out the results based on onscreen details requiring specific research:
Etymology (mentioned above)
Railways
Solar position
As my focus narrowed, I also imported several sections of the 1880 Ordnance Survey as overlays in Google Earth.
2. Discussion
2.1 THE POSTER
In my previous post, I discussed in some depth the reading of a prop that seems to have a county abbreviation assigned to Basilwether. It suggests Hertfordshire, which is within the more conservative estimates for travel time. But it is possible that the props department made a mistake.
We cannot say for certain, but we might be able to determine if the assignment was in the minds of the production team, by checking its consistency against other details. After all, it isn't just Basilwether I hope to locate. The rest of the route, and Miss Harrison's school, and Ferndell, are not tied to the given address. If we wish to be conclusive, or specific, we need to dive further and examine *all* the available evidence.
2.2 TOPOGRAPHY COMPARISON
[[Page]]
Conclusion: Within my maximum estimates (see above or here), this leaves us with the Chiltern Hills, the South Downs, the Kent Downs, the Surrey Hills, and the North Wessex Downs. Further afield, we also have Cranbourne Chase and the Cotswolds. Due to elevation concerns, large sections of land to the northeast of London are out of the running.
2.3 DETAILS
2.3.1 The Trains
Could the trains we see at Ferndell and Basilwether themselves be clues? I will be the first to admit this might be a hard sell, considering the limited availability of period trains complicates casting. [1] I have discussed the case for and against the use of GWR livery to narrow down the location some here. My verdict? The GWR would be a bonus, but another company would not disqualify a line.
2.3.2 The Route
The sequence of landmarks might be a viable option, but also a difficult one to address. My spacing estimates could be accurate, but the route could have changed direction, for instance, lessening actual overland distance considerably.
2.3.4 Solar Evidence
[[Page]]
2.3.4.1 The Stephens Viaduct
[[Page]]
2.3.4.2 The Walk
[[Page]]
3 What can we surmise?
Based on the solar evidence, Basilwether might be north of London.
The Stephens Viaduct is between 61 and 27 miles of London.
The poster implicates Hertfordshire, to the northwest of London, as the location of Basilwether.

Distances in Enola Holmes: Basilwether Hall and Station:  Part 2 - Topography Comparison
[[Previous]] ☼ [[Menu]] ☼ [[Next]]
This is part of a series of posts on identifying hypothetical real-world locations for unidentified places in Enola Holmes (2020). Since the discussion if posted as a whole, might quickly exceed Tumblr's ten-image limit, I added this separately.
2.2 TOPOGRAPHY COMPARISON
Tumblr media
Fig Uplands and rivers within our area of interest
2.2.1 Hills
Hills are a recurring feature in the first half of the movie. The hills we see are always in groups, often with more visible behind them, so inselbergs are unlikely.
2.2.1.1 Basilwether Station
Tumblr media
Fig . Basilwether Station exterior, looking away.
Basilwether station appears to be surrounded by hills, at the very least on the right. However, it might also be surrounded, if that line under the clock (below) is hillside and not trees.
Tumblr media
Fig . Basilwether Station interior, looking out. Possible hills in center.
In either case, a quick investigation of the film location demonstrates that the hills had to have been deliberately added in. There are buildings all around, and the view would be obscured by modern development. Why they chose this particular background is not known, but it could be that the artists wanted to make the image consistent with the rest of the route.
2.2.1.2 Bridge #1
Tumblr media
The first bridge the railway crosses and the farm near it appear fairly untouched by the CGI artists.
2.2.1.3 The Railway Sequences
And, perhaps most strikingly, the areas we witness during the train sequences following the bridge next to the farm are decidedly hilly— and CGI. The CGI considerably decreases the deciding power of the natural topography of the filming site.
2.2.1.4 Estimating extents
At 54m00s, Enola recounts rescuing a sheep from a cliff's edge as a girl, and then her mother patching her up at Ferndell. It is possible that Ferndell is near cliffs. If so, then by calculating possible distances from Ferndell, one might also be able to work out the distance to even more cliffs or rugged terrain. So, I attempted to find a rough estimate for the distance between Basilwether Station and Ferndell, and found the distance to be at most twenty miles. However, while we know Basilwether station is in a hilly area, and that Ferndell is situated in a hilly area, they don't need to be in the same hilly area. Since that describes just about every major set of hills in our area of interest, we'll move on for the moment.
Looking out for:
Hills around station
20 miles or less from more hills
What we can say with some certainty is that the railroad route was consistently hilly. As such, we can estimate that the hilly landscape must be at least four miles across in one direction, given the amount of screentime is shown and our estimated travel speed.
Looking out for:
Hills around station
20 miles or less from more hills
Hills near Basilwether should extend in one direction no less than four miles
2.2.1.5 Conclusions
Given the visuals, even if the area around Basilwether Hall is flat, it needs to be within fairly close proximity to a hilly region where the station and the following train sequences can take place. This is a breakthrough, because at the very least it can rule out Huntingdonshire, which had the third lowest highest point of the 1964 Ceremonial counties. I also took the opportunity to eliminate 1964 Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, the Soke of Peterborough, the Isle of Ely, and Parts of Holland. (As a mental shorthand, this is a contiguous area largely northeast of London.) The City of London, of course, was not even a consideration.
Within my maximum estimates (see above or here), this leaves us with the Chiltern Hills, the South Downs, the Kent Downs, the Surrey Hills, and the North Wessex Downs. Slightly further afield, we also have Cranbourne Chase and the Cotswolds.
Looking out for:
Hills around station

Distances in Enola Holmes (2020): If Trains Could Talk
[[Previous]] ☼ [[Menu]] ☼ [[Next]]
So there is something that keeps coming up in my notes: trains.
Not the railroads, the trains.
At this point, I have discovered I tend to repeat this information so I thought I'd deal with this subject in one go.
There are "two" trains in the movie, both "played" by a single engine, No. 2857, and four carriages of matching paint jobs (livery): GWR 3930, GWR 9095, GWR 6913, and GWR 9103.[1]
Tumblr media
In its first appearance, at Ferndell, the train also features GWR 1257, a milk van. All of the rolling stock (engine and carriages) is owned and operated by the Severn Valley Railway (SVR), who closed the track to passengers for the filming for three days in 2019. [2]
The history of these historic cars is easily available on the internet for those interested, but more pertinent to my ongoing project are the details of the train that might suggest a geographic range. The details in question are the numbering, and livery (the set of paint colors associated with a company). The numbering indicates individual vehicles, which have unique histories, while livery obviously can be used to identify the company that owns—or owned—a train. Since liveries could and did change, the livery also needs to be in accord with the two years in which Enola Holmes might have been set: 1884 and 1900.
How do these details stack up against the date? No to the first, yes to the second.
Locomotive No. 2857 was built in 1918, with the first prototype built in 1903. [1] [2] It's serial number is visible, and uncorrected both at Ferndell and when it appears again at 22m45s. Since the engine used in the production post-dates both 1884 and 1900, it is unlikely to be meant as an exact match. Nonetheless, according to one source, the production team selected it because it matched the exact "look" they were after. So, while the period nixes Locomotive No. 2857, the superficial features— the paint job ("livery"), then, may not be. The engine is dark green, consistent with Great Western Railway (GWR) engines in the late 19th century. [1]
(There is one engine on the SVR that predates 2857, 813, that dates from 1900 and came into service in 1901. There is a size difference, so it might have been too small for the shoot or been otherwise unsuitable.)
A similar situation to 2857 occurs with the carriages. 9055 was built in 1912, 3930 in 1915, 9103 in 1929, and 6913 in 1934. There were no earlier options for the shoot, however: the only SVR carriages to fit the period are not mobile, and there are only two of them. The third-oldest is 9055— uses the same livery and was, at least at the time of filming, used in the same set. [1] [2] [2] For these, the dates in service strongly argue against the carriages being intended to be the exact. Nonetheless, the passenger carriage paint jobs are very similar to that of the 1880-1908 standard. [1] [2] The GWR "chocolate and cream" had been in use since 1864. [1] So, the GWR label and livery do fit the period.
So, while production dates mean the vehicles themselves are implausible, there is some case to be made for the train scene to be set within GWR territory based on the trains' livery. Still, there are other explanations for the use of this particular combination of train and carriage than period accuracy or the aforementioned artistic intent. For instance, the limited availability of period trains naturally complicates the casting of such mechanical movie stars; older operational engines are fairly thin on the ground. Furthermore, this was the oldest set the SVR has. While the engine matches the preferences of the production team, it is possible they selected the SVR and the rolling stock it can provide due for reasons of practicality, or out of deference to a particular scenery. It is really impossible to say for certain the balance of artistic vision, historicity, and practicality without more information.
Due to the ambiguous reasons for the use of these particular trains, the proximity to the GWR and allied private railways where its rolling stock might have run is not a reliable clue in identifying the fictional locations in Enola Holmes (2020). However, the proximity to a railway at all should be a consideration when using geography for evidence, not unlike the use of existing rivers and towns. Nonetheless, it is evidence, and if I were to have to choose between two sites of equal likelihood, I would give the one that allows for the GWR to own the rolling stock more credence. Perhaps it can merit a half-point bonus.

Enola Holmes (2020): How high is the Stephens Viaduct?
[[Previous]] ☼ [[Menu]] ☼ [[Next]]
The viaduct is probably about ~152ft/~46m high. To get this measure I scaled using three reference images: one of the train used as the model, one of the train crossing the viaduct, and one of the viaduct in full. Further discussion below.
Methodology:
I used the following images for this calculation:
Image 1:
Tumblr media
Image 2:
Tumblr media
Using Image 1 and a reference image, I calculated the real-world height of the train. Then I used the train's height as a reference point for the spacing between the top of an arch and the top of the viaduct in Image 1, since I lacked an image featuring both the train, the bridge, and the water, at a reasonable distance, but I did have the such an image without the train, and the space between the arch and the top was a shared visible object I could use for scale. Then I applied that measure to the ratio between the height of the space between the arch and top and the height of the entire viaduct using Image 2.
Walkthrough
We have several measurements to do here. First, calculating the height of the carriage from wheel to roof (Rp), and the height of the stonework between the bottom of the arches (the intrados) and the top of the wall of the viaduct (Wp). These can be measured in pixels:
Rp=164
Wp=256
Next, we need the real-world height of one of the carriages (Rr) the CGI model was based on. While we lack this measurement, we do have the real world width [1], 9'0" wide [2] (274.32 cm) AND a squared photograph of the front of one of the cars, GWR 9103 Nondescript Saloon, from its restoration.[3]
Now, we have all the information we need to calculate the train height. I'm using imperial units at the moment, please bear with me:
Since Pixel_width(329) : Pixel_height(475) = Real_Width(108 inches): Real_Height
Then we know 475/329 = Real_Height/108
Multiplying both sides by the known Real_Width cancels on the right: 108 × (475/329) = (Real_Height/108) × 108108 × (475/329) = Real_Height
So Real_Height is: Real_Height = 108 × (475/329) Real_Height = 155.92705167173
329 : 475 = 108 : 155.92705167173
Now, we have all the info we need to calculate the real height of the viaduct wall segment (Wr) using the same formula:
Train Height in pixels = Rp = 164
Wall segment height in pixels = Wp = 256
Real-world Train height = Rr = 156 inches
Rp : Wp = Rr : X
Then we know Wp/Rp = X/Rr
Multiplying both sides by Rr cancels on the right Rr × (Wp/Rp) = (X/Rr) × Rr Rr × (Wp/Rp) = X
Then solving for XL X = Rr × (Wp/Rp) X = Wr
Therefore Rp : Wp = Rr : Wr
Plugging in the numbers:
164 : 256 = 155.92705167173: X
256/164 = X/155.92705167173
155.92705167173 × (256/164) = (X/155.92705167173) × 155.92705167173 155.92705167173× (256/164) = X
X = 155.92705167173 × (256/164) X =243.39832456075
Therefore 164 : 256 = 155.92705167173 : 243.39832456075
Train Height in pixels = Rp = 164
Wall segment height in pixels = Wp = 256
Real-world Train height = Rr = 156 inches
Real-world wall segment height = Wr = 243.39832456075 inches
So the wall segment over the arches is 243.39832456075 inches high. This lets us take that same height and apply it to the previous image. We must use a different arch due to the angles, but as you can see from this image, the space above the arches remains roughly even throughout the viaduct. We're going to lose accuracy, but given the scale and distance we really can only hope for a rough estimate. To the Wr value of 243.39832456075, the same area from the more complete view of the viaduct is 15.5 pixels high. I'm rounding up to 16 here. And the entire viaduct, at that point, is 116 pixels high.
Train Height in pixels = Rp = 164
Wall segment height in pixels = Wp = 256
Real-world Train height = Rr = 156 inches
Real-world wall segment height = Wr = 243.39832456075 inches
Wall segment height in pixels in full-scale image = Wf = 15.5
Viaduct height in pixels = Vp = 116
Viaduct height in real-world inches = Vr = ?
This produces a ratio of 15.5 : 116 = 243.39832456075 : 1821.5616547772
Calculator used for ratios
SO! The viaduct is 1821.5616547772 inches. Divide that now by 12, you get 151.79680456476into infinity. Yikes, that's not a very round number. I'd be willing to bet the CGI peeps were using metric, so let's try that. For expediency, I created a spreadsheet with the correct formula:
Tumblr media
Tldr;
As you can see, the results are consistent. If done by hand, with rounding, we probably would have an inconsistent result, however. I would love to verify this by using another set of footage of the viaduct and a separate reference marker, but I'm afraid we are quite limited given the amount of time it appeared in the film.

Distances in Enola Holmes (2020): Ferndell Geography
[[Previous]] ☼ [[Menu]] ☼ [[Next]]
This is part of a series of posts in which I try to map certain locations portrayed in Enola Holmes (2020): Basilwether Hall and Station, Ferndell, and Miss Harrison's school. Here, I am discussing the geographic clues for Ferndell, Enola's childhood home. This is not an absolute conclusion, since due to speed estimates I established Ferndell needs to be located within a certain distance of Basilwether, and vice-versa. As the less complex of the two linked locations, I cannot progress without establishing criteria for good Ferndell candidates.
Tumblr media
What do we know about Ferndell?
Tumblr media
This shot is extremely telling. It shows us Ferndell has either a river or canal (1), banked on either side by hills, with further hills or perhaps mountains (4) in the distance. The area is forested, but there is room for clearings.
Tumblr media
Since this is at sunrise, or soon after, the sun (2) should be in the East or East-southeast. Given the position of the house (3) slightly to the right of the sun, the house should be East-Southeast of the camera. Since the river is between the viewer and the house, we are given an approximate position of the river relative to the house. We see Enola cross another river or stream to get to Ferndell Station at 4m13s, but this one seems to have a swifter current. It may not be the same waterway. Still, it tells us Ferndell either has two waterways, or Ferndell Station is North or west of the waterway. Which is more likely may depend on one's interpretation of the Holmes' arrival at Ferndell.
Ferndell Criteria:
River or canal
Either two waterways, or Ferndell Station is west of the waterway
Hills in local terrain
Hills or mountains in distance
Forests
At 54m00s, Enola recounts rescuing a sheep from a cliff's edge as a girl, and then her mother patching her up at Ferndell. It is possible that Ferndell is near cliffs.
Ferndell Criteria:
River or canal
Either two waterways, or Ferndell Station is west of the waterway
Hills in local terrain
Hills or mountains in distance
Forests
Cliffs or steep terrain
Here is another line of thought: she took some mode of transport, be it on foot or by horsepower, to get to Basilwether Station. Basilwether Station could have been as far as twenty miles away— although probably less. Point is, if she could reach Basilwether at that speed before her absence would be discovered, then if London was at a similar or shorter distance she could have skipped the train altogether and used her existing mode. So it is possible that Ferndell needs to be closer to Basilwether Station than to London. However, since Enola was trying to throw them off her trail, it is possible she went out of her way.
One last thing: Ferndell Station is on a working railway. It doesn't seem to be a large one, but it is functional, with service north or to London (which does not mean that London is north of Ferndell, but it does not preclude it either). The train used is labeled and colored as a part of the Great Western Railway (GWR). It actually has its serial number visible, but since the train used in the production post-dates both 1884 and 1900, it is unlikely to be an exact match. The GWR and its livery, on the other hand, do fit the period, and thus might be canonical. It may not be, though. I'd place GWR as a bonus.
Ferndell Criteria (FINAL):
River or canal
Either two waterways, or Ferndell Station is west of the waterway
Hills in local terrain
Hills or mountains in distance
Forests
Cliffs or steep terrain
Railway
Bonus points if GWR
