COMMEET and the Migrants and Displaced Persons Toolkit
COMMEET’s actions to support community empowerment is until today (more are to come!) targeting two specific topics: entrepreneurship and the inclusion of migrants and displaced persons. To get a better insight into the concrete work and philosophy of the fellowship, let’s take a look at the Migrant and Displaced Persons Toolkit!

Why migrants and displaced persons?
Inclusion is the keyword for fostering a climate of development, yet is rarely associated with migration. Communities can be the forefront of this philosophy and a suitable scale to put in place the milestone for inclusive societies. It is therefore adequate to help communities grow by embracing and welcoming diversity and differences. New arrivals bring local challenges and migrants face several problems but the help of the community is of mutual benefits, fuelling individual developments and the communal one.
This perspective is highly tided to the Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) that commits us to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, in which COMMEET believes.
What does this toolkit focus on?
The toolkit provides instruction to structure the actions that the community may undertake. Moreover, it focuses on key points to provide a welcoming environment and aid settlements:
developing a culture of welcome and inclusion supporting co-creation and co-production to foster trust and understanding.
promoting good health
emphasizing the benefits of green spaces and the natural environment
understanding legal aspects for the migrants’ rights to be protected
promoting economic opportunities
facilitating access to education
addressing prejudice and racism
All the World's Immigration Visualized in One Animated Map
All in all, this toolkit focuses on the well-being of migrants and displaced persons through the inclusive and empathic actions of a community. Check it here and start your own journey for greater inclusion!

On #WorldRefugeeDay let’s take a look at the scope of the problem of displaced people including refugees and asylum seekers. This info-graphic was put together by the United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR). They added the following:
“We are now witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record.
An unprecedented 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from home. Among them are nearly 25.4 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18.
There are also an estimated 10 million stateless people who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.
In a world where nearly 1 person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution, our work at UNHCR is more important than ever before.”

#rainyseason☔️ has started early. It usually begins in May. This could mean even more #hurricanes this year. Changing weather patterns and more severe storms are a result of #globalwarming. Last year, Hurricanes #eta and #iota slammed #centralamerica and killed 200 people. Half a million humans were displaced. The "crisis" at the US southern border is partly composed of people who had their lives destroyed by climate change. To help cut down on refugees from #extremeweather events, we need to start treating global warming like the disaster it is. If we don't, there will only be more #displacedpersons all over the earth, desperate for a safe place to live in a world being destroyed by mankind. #morningthoughts☕💭 #earthincrisis Zarcero, Costa Rica. Transnational Migration In chapter 12 of the Miller textbook page 241-242 is described as "movement in which a person regularly moves back and forth between two or more countries and forms a new cultural identity transcending a single geopolitical unit." The textbook also describes transnational migration to have effect on the migrants identity, as constant movement weakens the sense of having a home and the "between" take on a new cultural reality. The picture of my house in Cambridge, Massachusetts fits because once I first moved to this street, I went back and forth to Haiti all the time because for two years. Both my mom and dad were still living there which left me with a sense of being in between cultures and not having a permanent home. If I were to do anthropological fieldwork, I would want to know the long term effect of being a transnational migration looks like for a person. Also, I would like to follow the life of a child as they progress to adulthood, so that I could examine and more deeply understand the long term effect that being a transnational migration has on someone.
Displaced person is described on page 244 in the Miller Textbook, as "someone who is forced to leave his or her home, community, or country". The book also says that displacement can be due to colonialism, slavery, war, persecution, natural disasters, etc. I personally am a displaced person because of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. As a result of this, around 20% of people were displaced, and a portion of this percentage of people went to rural areas and camps. I was lucky enough to be able to take a military plane to the Dominican Republic, and then took a plane to Boston a week later. I took this picture of my house that is in Cambridge, Massachusetts, because I have been living on this street ever since I have moved to the United States. Up the street from here, is where my guardian at the time lived. I lived with my guardian, because I moved to the house without my mom for two years. When my mom was able to come to US, we moved moved down the street together, and have been living there ever since. If I were to do anthropological fieldwork I would want to investigate if the new community or environment that a displaced person moves to has an impact on their adjustment. Furthermore, if a person moves into an urban area versus a rural area does this have a long term or short-term impact on their adjustment period. I think that this would be very interesting, because it would show a different aspect of the adjustment and assimilation process.

Today is World Refugee Day! Remember that refugees are here to live and have/make a better life for themselves and their families. We are all striving to live "The American Dream" or even surpass it tenfold! 🏡🚘👨👩👧👦💞 America is the "Land of Milk and Honey" 🍯 where anything and everything is possible. The beauty of America is freedom and the fact that if you work hard and are determined, you can achieve anything! Let refugees stay! Think about what it would be like to walk a mile in their shoes! 🇺🇸 As Americans we should all be open, loving and accepting! America is like a hearty salad, 🥗 whose different components make it delicious and interesting! Let everyone have "a piece of the pie". 😄❤️🙏🏾 #WorldRefugeeDay #PrayForRefugees #HarvardImmigrationAndRefugeeClinicalProgram #InternationalHoliday #UNCHR #DisplacedPersons #Refugees #Refugee #Crisis #PositiveChange #SocialChange #Humanitarian #YoungActivist #Activist #America #Love #Kindness #Acceptance #Hopes #Dreams #Desires #Wants #Needs #Education #QualityOfLife #WithRefugees #Christian #like4like #share #repost (at World Refugee Day Community Festival)

Acro-balance is one of my favorite activities to do with CircusAid workshop participants. Not only does it teach essential life skills like trust, reciprocity and communication, but it also works to improve executive functions like initiation, planning and working memory. These cognitive capacities live in the prefrontal cortex of the brain and can be negatively impacted by trauma. Learn more about teaching circus to improve physical, cognitive, social and emotional capacities by attending the World Federation of Occupational Therapist endorsed course on Circus as an educational and therapeutic tool. In the wake of the Holocaust, when thousands of Jewish survivors and other refugees remained in camps, the United States and other countries around the world delayed action on immigration. Between 1945 and 1948, US policy denied access to most Displaced Persons based on the country of their birth. The 1948 Displaced Persons Act and the 1950 corrective of that act finally allowed Jewish DPs access to legal immigration to the United States, where they settled and found new lives. The U.S. Refugee Resettlement program that grew as a result of this initial legislation has allowed hundreds of thousands of refugees the same opportunity.
Around the world, there are now more refugees and displaced persons in the world than at any time since World War II. We should all be aware of this crisis and ask our government to take a lead in providing refuge for those fleeing from violence and oppression. As President Truman said in 1952 about the ongoing Refugee Crisis in Europe:
This problem is of great practical importance to us because it affects the peace and security of the free world. It is also of great concern to us, because of our long-established humanitarian traditions.
Today, congress seeks to end the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program, it is even more important than ever to remember this history and demand that our leaders act according to our best past.
Stand with HIAS in support of refugees.
