I just finished Serena Valentino's take on Gaston's story (you know, from Disney's Beauty and the Beast) and I gotta say I don't really like it. Here's why:

Gaston isn't actually overly vain (just has good self esteem) - that's the curse

Gaston isn't actually obsessed with Belle and unwilling to take No for an answer - that's the curse

Gaston doesn't actually hate reading or new ideas / inventions - that's the curse

Gaston doesn't actually randomly fear-monger about the beast and want to destroy it for no other reason than that he can - that's the curse (and the faded memory but lingering hatred for a completely different beast that killed both his parents)

What curse you ask? The one put on the beast and his staff also makes Gaston forget pretty much all about his upbringing - that he was friends with the prince and the castle staff, the Beast of Gévaudan (which killed his parents) and apparently also all his good sides (like that he likes stories and reading, that he dislikes how mean the village is to Belle etc.). Plus he gets cursed with an unexplicable obsession with Belle.

Overall this book takes away his responsiblity for any of his evil actions and makes him a better guy than the prince (before the curse the prince is an absolute asshole and Gaston is actually kinda decent, even if he doesn't critisize his friend as much as he would deserve). Yet he's the one punished by death while the prince gets the happy ending (just like in the movie). I suppose the like-afication is due to the fact that an entire book from the POV of an egocentrical, womanizing asshole would not be particularly enticing. But then again there was no need for this book. The story was already covered in the series (from the beast's POV), so she didn't have to do Gaston as well. Or if she really wanted to, there was no need for this utter character assasination. Him having a hatred for beasts because a beast killed his parents works without the curse part. And if she could commit to making the beast unlikable as a character trait instead of as part of a curse, I really don't see why we can't have that with Gaston. There's even seeds for it in the story. He's already sure of being the best at anything before the curse, but more in a matter-of-fact way than in a praise-me-and-swoon way. Just let one develop into the other naturally, maybe because he realizes that while being the best didn't mean much in the castle, in the village he's constantly praised for it and it goes to his head. It doesn't have to be because of a stupid curse that wasn't even supposed for him.
