wondering whether the trope of the tragic detective with a dark past whose best days are behind him is like. partly due to the nature of detective fiction as backward looking. thinking abt this bc paradise killer and disco elysium both have nostalgia as such a strong theme. the job of the detective IS to search through the past. Plus detectives often need to actively not confront the future, in modern source material especially there is often a tacit ackowledgement that prison is not actually a meting out of justice but the work will ignore this during the pursuit. a willfully obtuse viewpoint that candy really did taste better when you were a kid <=> a willfully obtuse viewpoint that if you can just put all the pieces together and read the past correctly, "justice" will be done ?

actually what am I doing I can just ask people on tumblr instead of googling ten million things and getting zero relevant results

So I'm writing a paper for a class about utopias and I'm talking about the ways the view of utopian society/utopian problems have changed in Star Trek over the years as the metatextual societal influences have impacted the writing. I'm trying to find and analyze one episode per series that has to do with the concept of Utopia (or dystopia). I have most of the episodes picked out, but I've never actually seen Voyager or Enterprise (yet, I want to finish DS9 first <3), so I humbly ask the nerds of tumblr for assistance !! If there’s any good episodes from those shows about that concept let me know ! :)
