i think a discworld detail i particularly enjoy is that while the watch books are among the best and most beloved in the setting, any time you have a book with other protagonists, the characters are always 'ah shit it's the cops' and are extremely wary of any watch members they interact with, no matter how innocent they are or who the watchman is, and there'll often be unfair behavior and bad reputations present

all cops are bastards and sam vimes would be the first to tell you so

Map part for the hole dwelling map, starring... Not my ocs! I wanted to use ocs, but I don't have any-- so I just used the characters from a fic I was reading at the time 😂

Turns out, the symbolism was so much fun to twist into the 11 seconds I had to work with, I ended up going way more complex than I meant to. If you wanna read the fic this was based on, please do!! And tell the author I said hi! :D

I don’t think Discworld could be adapted well with a live action medium, but having Con O’Neill play Sam Vimes would be the MOST INCREDIBLE casting choice ever.

Like he would NAIL the grizzled and exhausted, but unendingly determined nature of Vimes. Con would OWN the journey that Vimes goes on to fiercely fight against intolerance, even if he’s a little confused about certain things lmao

I miss the Dream SMP so I remade the entire disc confrontation/staged disc finale area in Minecraft.

The world was generated in version 1.16 snapshot 20w17a, which is the version the DSMP was originally started in. The bunker/vault area is built in the exact same location as the original (checked with VODs), at coordinates -240, 80, 3305. The elevator is actually functional too! The world is compatible with Minecraft Java version 1.20+.

Some notes and more info below the cut:

Install instructions: unzip the file and put the folder in the saves location, default is C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves

Notes:

I built and changed only the disc finale area! This area includes the mountain, the bunker, and a tiny part of the Nether. The rest of the world is completely untouched, but I did generate it from spawn in 1.16 so the landscape should look familiar.

You can go through the Nether portal and it should put you in the right location but I didn't build anything else in the Nether.

This world works only with Java! You're free to convert it to Bedrock but the elevator won't work in Bedrock, so keep that in mind.

You need to press the button upstairs to make the elevator go down, and the button downstairs to make it go up. You can't press the button upstairs to make the elevator go up, and you can't press it downstairs to make it go down.

The world is compatible with version 1.20+ but I did replace the deepslate in the bunker with the original bedrock, so it should look the same as in the actual finale.

When you first start the world, it should put you right in front of the elevator entrance. If you get lost or stuck at spawn, the coordinates to the disc finale area are -240, 80, 3305.

The Day The World Went Away (1999)

I think a lot of people don't realize the Pax Americana, the massive decline in the frequency and severity of interstate wars since the end of the Second World War, is not a coincidence or happenstance. It is not an act of G-d, an unalterable status quo, or an accident. It is the product of decades of careful, hard work by diplomats, world leaders, civil servants, and political figures. And the primary guarantor of this peace, the product of their hard work is:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)

And NATO is precisely what Vladimir Putin is waging a targeted hybrid war to destroy.

The binding principle of NATO, of course, is that an attack against one is an attack against all. An assault against Poland will get America, Britain, Canada, Germany, and all of the other 32 member states to respond. This creates a tangible disincentive to attack, obviously. To be in NATO is to be assured that when shit hits the fan, you have the most powerful military in the history of mankind on your side, that you are protected from any expansionist neighbors. All across the world are nations that would likely be subject to hostile takeovers if their larger neighbors felt free to invade—Taiwan, Poland, the Baltics, Israel, Finland, etc. Some of these nations are not in NATO, but they are all American allies, and the American military is the bedrock of global peace today. You ever wonder why the US spends so much on a massive military in peacetime? Because they're paying for the defense of themselves, and Western Europe, ANDcontributing to the self defense capabilities of their allies—many of whom do have competent militaries of their own, but mutually benefit from the American security umbrella.

Today, of course, we're dealing with the problem of an expansionist Russia guided by an irredentist ideology that views Russia as holding a unique, privileged position between the decadent, declining West (Europe) and the foolish, ungovernable Asia. Eurasianism holds that Russia is the center of both worlds, and is both destined and obligated to take the reins of Europe and Asia and guide it to Russian-approved greatness. The Russian government systematically denies the legitimacy of Eastern Europe's national aspirations and cultures, arguing that it is no different from Russian culture and therefore deserves Russian governance. And if they can't take over these nations by unequal treaties and puppet regimes and troll farms, they'll do it directly with force.

But, of course, there's a problem. NATO. NATO is the obstacle in Putin's plans. A war with NATO would be, well, World War III. Russia can't afford to go to war with NATO, and they know that.

But what if... they could make NATO politically irrelevant?

And this is what brings us to our good friends Donald Trump and the Republican Party. The links between the Republican Party and the Russian state apparatus are a bit lengthy for the scope of this post, but the point is, Donald Trump has displayed a consistent admiration for Vladimir Putin, and a derision for NATO unheard of for any American president since 1949. Trump has described NATO as "obsolete" and even stated he would allow Russia to "do whatever they wanted" to nations that don't pay enough into NATO.

This is bad. Real bad.

Trump is doing what is in Putin's interest and trying to turn back the clock to the pre-NATO days—where nations were invaded by stronger neighbors, and there was no massive military alliance to block it. Putin is working to undo the Long Peace and create the circumstances that would allow him to bring back the dead Soviet empire by force. Yes, NATO would intervene if Russian troops set foot in Poland, but that will mean a lot less if the main backbone of NATO, the United States, has announced to the world that it will abandon its allies.

This is what makes European leaders so invested in the 2024 presidential election, and why the invasion of Ukraine shocked them so much—Putin was demonstrating he seriously wants to wage war for territorial expansion, and is willing to kill to do so. If Trump wins in 2024, not only will he enact Project 2025 and cause all kinds of damage to the United States' democracy, he will also create a world where autocrats are free to invade their neighbors if they want. China can invade Taiwan. Russia can invade the Baltics. North Korea can invade South Korea. Venezuela can invade Guyana. Azerbaijan can invade Armenia. He won't bring about World War III, he'll bring about a bunch of smaller wars, all over the world.

If you want peace and democracy, vote for Harris. If you want war and authoritarianism, vote for Trump.

It's as simple as that.

I just can't imagine being brave enough to ask anyone whether they would prefer you be attractive in the sight of their friends, or attractive when they fuck you. that those are the only two options. I can't stop thinking about how there are many other answers to that question, and almost all of them are wrong.

I have officially beaten 7 Rebirth! I mostly enjoyed it - loved the story and characters, though personally my feelings on the ending are up in the air until I see how the final game follows it up. There was TOO MUCH exploration and minigames for my taste (I have completionist tendencies so I WANT to do everything but GOD I hated some of it and eventually did give up on some stuff), making me possibly the ONLY person to prefer Remake to Rebirth, but I understand that's a personal hangup.

I know most aspects of the GS dates have been talked into oblivion at this point, but there are two little tidbits I haven't seen mentioned in Clerith's favor - first is that even OUTSIDE of the play and the skywheel scenes, Aerith's version flows the best narratively, and 2nd is the ending of the play might be a callback to their scene in Kingdom Hearts 2.

The game reveals that whoever your "date" was is locked into your battle party when facing Corneo the next day. Prior to the date, Aerith is always the one at the battle square who led us to Dio to fight in the first place AND she straight up SAYS she wants to fight. She also comments on fighting together AFTER the date - "Wall Market Warriors, you and me!" Even before the game actually reveals you're FORCED to fight alongside your date, Aerith sets the expectation that she's fighting too. Of the other dates, only Barrett implies he's fighting too ("tomorrow we'll go to town on them") while no one else says anything about the impending fight.

As for the play, the ending is the same for each love interest but the dialogue made me immediately remember Aerith and Cloud's scene together in KH2. He has to leave, but promises to return and knows she'll be waiting for him. Honestly the line about her not NEEDING to promise to wait felt like a subtle acknowledgment of when Aerith DID say she'd "stay here and cheer for you" in KH2. It just gives an added layer of depth to Aerith's version of the play that the other ladies don't have.

Between these two things and Aerith definitely fitting the role of Rosa (magic/staff user) the best, PLUS Cloud ALWAYS getting a close-up where he looks enamored while she's singing (similar to him reacting to her in the red dress in Remake) and briefly taking her hand when everyone bows (again, regardless of if Rosa was Tifa/Yuffie), Aerith's date DEFINITELY feels the most narratively satisfying and canon. Everything flows together so well even before and after the date where it doesn't flow that way with anyone else.

Its wild knowing it's already been out for a year. God damn. I remember being sooooooooo excited for it and then LOSING MY MIND in the theater at the ending. Literally left it ranting and raving to my best friend, who I got to see it with and had previously watched it.

It does not feel like it's been a whole year.
