[SURVIVAL KIT] A small supply of healing potions, status restoring items, and rations.

[BASIC SPELL MATERIA] A few simple spell Materia. Spell Materia are green and the spells they give you are the closest to generic magic attacks, such as throwing fireballs at people. Not terribly powerful, but it will help you get started. Contains 1 Fire, Bolt, Ice, and Cure.

[BASIC INDEPENDENT MATERIA] Purple Materia that can't be combined with other Materia and usually confers passive boosts to the user, such as increasing the amount of HP or MP they have. Contains 1 Cover, HP Plus, and Pre-emptive.

[SENSE] A command Materia, enables you to learn details about a target such as their name, weaknesses, and how much health they have left.

DRAWBACKS

[RUINED FOREVER] You may choose whether Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, and the like are canon to the version of FF7 you landed in. You may make all, none, or some of them canon.

[PARTY SIZE] For the duration of this jump, you can only have 2 companions active at a time instead of the normal 8.

[HUNTED] Shinra has decided, for whatever reason, that it wants you. In order to acquire you, they've sent the Turks after you. Brian Wilson’s Ghost Theater: The Radiant Radish Story

Somewhere hidden on the isle of kokomo the ghostly casper version of beloved musical genius and heart and soul of The Beach Boys Brian Wilson is starring at a bowl of ice cream melting on top of his piano. The flavor, coconut rum sultana, the ghost of Brian Wilson perks up and smiles a little and looks away, he’s a shy spirit. 

Hey dudes you might be wondering why I’m a ghost when I’m not even dead yet? Well that’s the whole point of Brian Wilson’s Ghost Theater. We’re going to get to the bottom of these mysteries. I have been mainly using this digital forum as a way to write cool reviews about cartoons and good vibrations, but then, well you know, The Beach Boys have fallen into worse company than Ol Charlie. Don’t worry just because I’m a ghost doesn’t mean I pal around with Charlie Manson and the rest of the ghoul gang. You’ve got to cut those toxic people out of your lives. Come, let’s go to my garage. It’s easier to tell a story in there. 

The Ghost of Brian Wilson floats away from his piano stool wrapped in kelp. I am trying to get visual proof of the existence of the Ghost of Brian Wilson but my iPhone is sparking. There are rumors on the island that Kate Bush has relocated here and has built her house on an even more precarious cliff. I take one last glance at the splashing glades of dark and foreboding ocean slapping against the cliffside. I wonder how the Ghost of Brian Wilson’s piano stays in such pristine condition despite the wet conditions? 

The path to Brian Wilson’s Ghost’s Garage is covered in thick overgrown vines from papaya trees, I have to always make sure I am looking down or else I could get snapped up by the foliage. A furry hermit crab is ushering into a sandy cove with the air of the conspiratorial. There are two glowing theremins outside of Brian Wilson’s Ghost garage attracting moths larger than a grown adult man’s head flapping against the glow. I walk inside the garage and the door does not slam shut and lock me inside like I had feared but the sun seems stuck in a sunset. Brian Wilson’s Ghost pats upon a plush plum colored loveseat indicating a place for me to sit. There is an ash tray full of wrapped unsmoked purple joints and more ice cream.

This Story Begins In the Summer of 1970

Leading up to the release of our album Surf’s Up, the one album I was taking a back seat on. I had left my physical body for the first time in 69 sometime after I started using coke. Van Dyke Parks and I were messing around in the medicine cabinet and doing the whole, “This isn’t my coke, this is your coke” routine and I felt my heart bum bum bumming at a vicious “Be My Baby”frequency. I needed a boost to keep up with the fruits and vege-tables at Radiant Radish. I was trying to get this specific chime sound right for my cash register, and I really meant my cash register. It was important for the rest of the store’s six cash registers to still sound like cash a regular cash register. 

(At this point in the story Brian Wilson’s Ghost vanishes and reappears with large cylindrical recordings of cash register noises and we listen to them for a few excruciating minutes)

And my cash register would ring this real pretty tone for whenever a real sexy lady bought some beet root powder and unruly arugula. I was imagining “Deidre,” Bruce’s ex-lady’s sister. As soon as the cash register burst open my ghost leapt out of my skin. I really like the actual Brian Wilson, but he never wants me around. He calls me a drag! I tried helping out with Radiant Radish, but I wouldn’t stop tinkering with the cash register. I more or less inhabited his bath robe and mostly hung around. Sometimes I help the real Brian catch a certain chord shape floating by and haunt Murry, my dad.

“So, you’re a coke ghost?” Are the words I eventually gather and casually toss out for Brian Wilson’s Ghost.  I am hoping that somehow this all connects with the present and explain how Mike Love ruined the band. 

“I’m a health food store ghost!”

“Okay, but I’m not going to buy a subscription to this vitamin supplement program!”

“Then why did you bother coming all the way out to Kokomo? I am not supposed to let anybody onto this island! I should have left you drowned!”

“Hey that’s not fair!” I am really hurt right now but I don’t want to lose Brian Wilson’s Ghost so I check my back account, and of course it’s too low, but I sign up for the $15.99 antimicrobial surprise package and Brian Wilson’s Ghost finally stops doing his heart wrenching pout that makes me want to jump out into the ocean.

“Why did you wrench me out my revery..I feel like I was almost really back there. Dang dude.”

“Weren’t 69 and the start of the 70s pretty brutal for you Brian?” I look for that noble sorrow hidden in the depths of the phantom’s eyes and come up empty. He is completely vacant. “Fuck Mike Love!” I take my own self off guard by how passionate I get when I say this. Brian Wilson’s Ghost only responds with a fuzzy frown. “What? Don’t you get agree? You, or at least the real you, called him a piece of shit that stole The Beach Boys name. The reason I came out here was because I want to steal the Beach Boys name back for you.”

“So then it really will be safe to listen to The Beach Boys again, huh?” Brian Wilson’s Ghost continues doing that perpetual tear suspended in the corner of his eye wounded puppy dog eyes and I really wish I could give this ghost a swirly. 

“What? Um, Sure, but I doubt we’d be converting any new fans like Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu who took to Twitter to let everyone know that he always hated The Beach Boys.”

“That was our slogan back in 70 and 71, “It’s Safe to Listen to The Beach Boys again.”

“Ugh that’s terrible and this was an attempt to make yourselves seem cool again?”

“Our new manager Jack “The Super hurtful Man” came up with that one. What do you have against Mike Love? He’s not a bad man! Come on kick back and let me put on  “All I Wanna Do” could a true asshole sing a song that nice?”

“Yes!  I mean yes I have heard the song, it practically invented chillwave, and yes an asshole can sing a nice tune every once and awhile.  Don’t think I didn’t notice all of the Wanted Dead or Alive Mike Love posters on Kokomo, even the people of his own island can’t stand him. Brian Wilson you are The Beach Boys! The Beach Boys were about spreading love to everyone and encouraging friendly ecology! “Take A Load Off Your Feet” prevented my foot being amputated from lounger’s foot. We’ve got some before the election! Brian Wilson’s Ghost can make his debut and show the world that The Beach Boys do not support Trump!” I feel like I have gone rabid by the end of this tirade and the fuzzy hermit crab is using his pinchers to snap at my toes to shoo me away. 

Brian Wilson’s Ghost licks his dry mouth and gives me his award winning smile. He vanishes inside of his deuce coup and turns on the engine. He opens the door and once again pats on the seat letting me know that the seat is warm and accepting of my sorry ass. I reach into my breast pocket and wave two cassettes, one of Sunflower and the other of Surf’s Up trying to entice Brian to put them in, but he waves them away. Instead, Brian Wilson’s ghost takes out a red blank disc that is labeled with a Radiant Radish sticker. 

Brian was right, these cash registers really are the best part of the store.

The Scientist (Chapter 39)

Summary: In the events following Asgard’s destruction, Loki finds himself on Earth seeking refuge to await the inevitable. Much to his surprise, it comes from a source he would never have expected.

Sitting on the opposite side of the counter, Loki waited patiently for his hot chocolate. He hovered, as per usual, but without making the effort of sneaking around. Luna knew he would be there. He didn’t mind.

“It’s slated to rain soon,” Luna said, her back still facing him. “Thunder and lightning, too. The streets might freeze overnight.” Loki hummed in acknowledgment. “Do we have everything we need?”

“Last I checked,” he mumbled through his folded hands.

"Good." Luna turned around, holding a mug in each hand. Loki took the one she handed him, and he raised it in salutations. She copied him and took a sip. She grimaced. Way too hot. As she rounded the counter to sit next to Loki, a flash of light outside the closed window blinds caught her eye. “There she blows,” she mumbled.

Not ten seconds later, a rumble of thunder touched down. Loki’s ears perked and his head whipped around on reflex. He caught himself, but it was too late. Luna knew what was ailing him without him saying anything.

She lay a sympathetic hand on the back of his shoulder. “How about some music, hm? I have just the thing.” Abandoning her still-steaming hot chocolate, she got up and sifted through her CD collection. She found the one her heart desired and popped it into the disc drawer. She skipped a track and pressed play, gracing the air with a soothing guitar melody. “You recognize this one?” Luna asked.

Loki shook his head. “Don’t think so.”

“It’s called ‘The Rain Song.’” On cue, drops of rain pelted the window from outside. The pair smiled, finding wit in Mother Nature. “Fun fact: even though this album is called ‘Houses of the Holy,’ the namesake song is not on this album. It is, in fact, on,” Luna pulled another CD from the shelf and approached Loki, “this one; ‘Physical Graffiti.’” He took it from her and admired the cover art.

He laughed breathily. “Tricksters, were they?”

“Maybe. ‘Houses of the Holy’ is the older of the two, but still. Why name a song after an album you already released? Eh, it doesn’t matter. They both have stellar tracks.” She put down the CD cases and picked up her mug. “Come. Sit with me.”

She walked to the couch and sat cross-legged on the floor in front of the window. Loki brought his hot chocolate and accompanied her, though he didn't know what was so exciting about the rain. He stole a glance and felt like asking, but the look in her eyes silenced him.

Luna was calm and content. She found favor in the storm, and Loki knew he didn’t need to understand why. He did, though, understand why she picked the song. It set the mood and atmosphere ideally well. He made a mental note to listen to it to again if he was ever caught alone in the apartment with the weather brewing outside.

Shuffling in his spot and accidentally brushing his knee against Luna's, Loki looked over his shoulder at the space under the couch where he'd hidden the vinyl record. It was the only safe place for it to sit undetected until he deemed the moment right to gift it. But he hadn’t thought far enough to know when the right moment was or what it felt like. He figured he would go with the flow, but he was getting impatient. Each second passed up was a second stolen from him seeing her eyes light up with surprise and, hopefully, gratitude. He’d go so far as to wish for her to look at him with happiness.

Sooner than he wished, the song ended, and he was nearly done with his beverage. Luna had guzzled hers down as soon as it had cooled down enough. She wasted no time in enjoying it.

“Hey, want to do something different tonight?”

“Perhaps.” Loki took the last bit of his drink. “What did you have in mind?”

“I was thinking of doing a jigsaw puzzle with a little twist.”

Loki was a bit perplexed, but he agreed. “Sure.”

Luna cleared the coffee table and poured out the pieces on the floor beside her. She divvied up the 2000 pieces into two piles: one for her and the other for her companion. Loki took his place on the other side and admired the art on the box. When it was all finished, the image would depict over 100 different bird species. He smirked. Of course she would have something like this.

“So what’s the twist?” he asked as he set the lid down and pulled his pile of pieces closer to him.

“Well, I was thinking we do a little quid pro quo. I ask you things, you ask me things,” Luna said in an uncharacteristic tone of voice. Luckily for her, Loki understood the reference.

“So, I’ll be the Clarice to your Hannibal?” They share a brief chuckle. “Questions about what, exactly?”

Luna shrugged and tilted her head. “Just questions. My teachers and professors would call things like this ‘icebreakers,’ but I always hated those. Since we know each other, this’ll just be a fun thing to do on a night in. Unless you don’t want to, then we don’t have to.” She laid out the edge pieces in proposed intersecting lines.

“There’s no harm in it. I’ll cooperate.” Loki copied her strategy and searched through his pile.

“Great. Uh, how about I go first? I kinda already have a question in mind.” Loki turned his attention to her. “Ok. What’s your favorite animal?”

“Ooh, tough. I would say … the rabbit.”

Luna lay down a few more pieces. “Good choice. I like them too.” Loki grinned.

“I do enjoy how they look like little thieves.”

Luna stopped her movements, a little confused as to what he meant. “How do the ones on Asgard look?”

“Same as the ones here.” Loki grabbed his phone and scrolled through the pictures. “See?”

He held the screen up for her to see. Luna looked from the image to Loki and back to the image, for what she was seeing was not the type of rabbit she had in mind. No, she was looking at a raccoon. A tastefully-posed, adorable raccoon, but a raccoon nonetheless. She believed Loki was making a fool out of her as friends usually do, but the expectant look on his face gave him away. He was absolutely serious. She let her features soften as she looked affectionately at the animal in question.

“Aw, yeah,” she cooed. “He’s cute.” Loki tossed his phone onto the couch, a satisfied smirk making an appearance on his façade.

“What’s your favorite?”

Luna held up the puzzle box cover and gestured grandly to the picture. “Behold the obvious, though I am partial to the more reptilian-appearing organisms. All in all, I favor anything descended from dinosaurs or are even remotely dinosaur-looking.”

“Snakes?”

She snapped her fingers and pointed at him scoldingly. “Ah-ah, that’s two questions in a row. But I’ll give you that one. Yes, even those guys.” Loki felt a tiny boost in his ego. Unusual, but not uncalled for.

Luna connected a few of her pieces to the ones Loki laid down. “Ever gotten a manicure?” she asks.

“A what?”

“You know, your nails done up nice.”

Loki held his hand up and admired his bare nails. “I’ve used my magic in the past to do them.”

“Well then, I must give you a manicure one of these days. I have to warn you, though, that I don’t have a large range of colors.” She turned a puzzle piece around a few times, feeling a bit nervous. Doing Loki’s nails would mean holding his hands for an extended amount of time. In private. Away from watchful crowds and behind closed doors.

“I’m sure what you have is good.” They paused for Loki to think of a question to ask. “What was your biggest obsession as a child?” Luna shot him an amused, yet puzzled, look. “What? I’m sure everyone had one. Even I had one.”

“Oh yeah? What was yours?”

“Tell yours first, then I’ll tell mine.”

"Got the hang of the game," she praised. "Uh, my biggest one, for sure, was dragons."

“Dragons? You?”

“Surprised?”

"Only a reasonable amount."

“Yup. I just loved ‘em. Thought they were the neatest thing in the world. I mean, I still do. You should have seen me when ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ came out. I almost lost my mind, I was so excited.” Loki tilted his head. “Oh, it’s a movie. I can show it to you later. I think you might really like it.”

He smiled. “Probably.”

“Ok, now you go. What were you obsessed with?”

“Oh, but it is ever so embarrassing.”

“Come on! It’s just me.” Luna places a hand over her chest. “Trust me. If I laugh, it’s because I find it amusing and sensible.”

Loki did trust her, so he told her. “It, uh, it was interesting-looking tree branches,” he looked down and fidgeted with a lock of his hair, “but that stopped as I aged.”

“No kidding! You do anything with them?”

He lay down and connected a few more pieces. “Magical items and such. Wands, imaginary broadswords, and the like.” He formed a picture of a bird.

“Any walking sticks?”

Overt recognition passed over him. “Yes, actually.”

“See?” Luna grinned and shrugged. “Not so ridiculous.” She put down a piece on the edge and another in the middle of the empty space. “Now you go because my question for you was the same as yours for me.”

“Goodness,” Loki mumbled. He thought back to a few days previous and his conversation with Tony. He was still curious, so he posed a question. “Who lied to you?”

Luna was unfazed. “What do you mean?”

“Stark told me you’ve had enough of liars.” She stopped moving her hands. “Who lied?”

“Loki, did he threaten or insult you? Because I explicitly told him not to.”

“No matter if he did or didn’t. Who told a lie so bad, he’s concerned about it? About you?”

Luna’s hands trembled a bit in her lap. She folded them and stuck them between her thighs, gritting her teeth. She took a deep inhale and dictated her practiced half-truth.

“He’s an inherent worrier. Because I’m, well, me, it’s easy for him. And yeah, I may have told him in passing about someone lying, but everyone does it. Plenty of people have lied to me and deceived me. It doesn’t have to be one person for it to be bad." Her hands ceased their shaking, and she brought them back out to shuffle through her pile of pieces. “And you are the liesmith, Loki. So he’s concerned for a reason that makes sense to him." She picked up a piece and tapped its edge against the tabletop. “But, I think I got you handled.”

“Oh, you think you can handle me now?” Loki joked. Luna smiled along with him, inwardly delighted she successfully diverted him from the topic at hand.

“I said ‘I think,’ not ‘I know.’” Loki didn't need to know the whole truth. The entire, embarrassing, shameful truth. “Ooh, I got a good one. What was one of your favorite tricks you ever played on Thor? Doesn’t matter when.”

“Uh,” Loki drawled, tapping his chin in thought. Ceasing a memory, he let out a pleased giggle. “There, um, that one time I turned him into a frog. That was very good.”

Luna gasped aloud. “You didn’t!”

“Oh, yes.” Loki nodded. “Took our mother three days to finally convince me to change him back, but those were three very entertaining days. It was grand.”

Luna struggled to hold back her laughter. "I bet it was." Her smile wouldn't die down, and she put a hand over her mouth. "Sorry. It's just really funny to think about."

“Glad you think so.”

Together, they finished the entire outer edge of the picture. Neither minded the quiet between them. It was expected and embraced. The rain pattering against the glass persisted and aided in calming them.

Though it was Loki’s turn to ask a question, he couldn’t think of a single one past the frivolous. He wasn’t in the mood for it. No, Luna awakened a feeling deep in his heart he couldn’t name. With each puzzle piece he lay down and connected to another, his brain thought logically about what he was feeling.

Nothing overt. It was quiet and ominous. Much like him, but it was older. Guilt? No, that had nothing to do with her. Suspicion? No, he was nearly past it. He couldn’t place it or understand it.

Or maybe it was what he couldn’t see that was the trick. What he didn’t understand about her. She had been right all this time. He didn’t know her as well as he believed. His snooping got him far, but with all his strength and cunning intelligence, she guarded her heart well. So well, in fact, perhaps only Heimdall could see what it contained. Loki wished to see it and what it spelled out for him.

He had his question, so he asked.

“How can you show me such kindness yet have knowledge of what I’ve done?”

Luna’s brows shot up enough for him to see. “I don’t know everything you’ve done. Only some of what you’ve done here and whatever else you’ve told me.” She lay two more pieces, hoping he would take the answer.

He didn’t. “But what you know is enough to warrant much harsher treatment. Why do you think I deserve what you give me?”

Luna laced her fingers together, lay them on the table, and made direct eye contact. “Because, Loki, what you’ve done in the past is literally not my problem, unless you make it my problem. Then we have a whole other situation on hand, but that’s another thing. It’s against my value system and moral standing to not be kind and hospitable to everyone I meet or needs help. But don’t misunderstand me.” She pointed at him. “I do not, under any circumstances, throw my pearls before swine.”

“And what about me?”

She scoffed. “What about you? Are you saying you’re a swine? Because you absolutely are not. Ok? You’re my friend, and you’re very deserving of what I give you.” Luna concluded her answer with a smile.

She’d gotten the last word. Her friend in question looked taken. He stayed staring as she resumed her work in the puzzle. He was a fighter in every sense of the word, but she was more refined and cultured in her own way. Different from him, but similar enough he could see her reasoning. He bent his head and grinned. He indeed met his match in her.

Loki withheld anything he wished to say or start saying, opting to continue his puzzle work. It was her turn to ask something, and he didn't want to distract her. She kept her eyes on her side and stayed quiet, letting the gears in her head turn and grind.

Luna could tell he was in the mood for more profound questions, as his was one of specific abstraction. It was one not easily found on a deck of question game cards, if at all. She didn’t know if she could pose one like his, so she went for something more generic, though she knew his answer would most likely be anything but.

“Have you ever been in love?” she spoke quietly.

“Me?”

Luna nodded. “Mhm.”

Loki lay a few more pieces in the gradually diminishing empty space. “Not that I recall,” he said a bit above a murmur like he was shy.

Luna shrugged. She empathized with him. “Yeah, me neither.”

His brow creased. “But you’ve courted others.”

“Like I told you before, I hardly liked them, so love was out of the question.”

“Did you ever like anyone?”

Luna measured her words carefully. “I liked Wanda for a time.” Loki knew enough for her to confess such a secret and not be chastised.

“Why not pursue her?” Screw the rules of the game.

“She already had her eyes set on Vision, and his on her. They didn’t know it at first, but I did. They weren’t very inconspicuous about it.”

“You still could have gone after her.”

“I didn’t know for sure if she liked people like me. I still don’t know. But you know, it’s for the best that she’s with him and not me.” Luna shuffled her pile of puzzle pieces. “She wouldn’t have been happy.”

“Why do you say that?”

She felt the familiar tickle of nervousness in her chest. “She just wouldn’t have been.” She waved a dismissive hand. “It was a passing crush. Everyone has one at least once in their lives.”

“Did you ever have another?”

“That remains to be seen.” Still, Luna was sly. She kept the wheels turning. “How about you? You have a crush recently?”

Loki shot her a smirk. “That remains to be seen.” It wasn’t fun if they were candid the entire time.

Though now, it was unclear whose turn it was. Luna had asked her question, and Loki had asked a few after her. They waited out some time, chiming in when a puzzle piece needed to go on a side of the table that didn't belong to them. The awkwardness crept in a little. They were supposed to be talking; conversing as friends do.

Luna took the silence to think of something. Unlike the grown people she knew now, she never got to play question or dare games as a younger person with friends. The ones she did have never cared or bothered. Their concerns lay elsewhere. She picked her brain for a question an anxious teen would ask their giggling acquaintances. Those years were long gone from her, but she could make up for one moment with a real friend.

True to her predictions, her cheeks grew warm as her heart quickened. She cleared her dry throat and took the leap.

“Ok, so,” she cleared her throat again for good measure, “first time?”

Loki looked at her and quirked a brow. “First time doing what?”

Luna clenched her teeth and repeated herself. “You know,” she tensed her shoulders up to her ears, “canoodling and such … activities.”

Loki dropped the puzzle piece in his hand and sat up straight. “That’s what you call it?” She had his full attention. “Alright. Uh, well, the first time was with a very old friend of mine who has since passed. Fandral.”

“Fandral.” Luna echoed with a lazy smile. “Nice name. What were they like?”

“He was good. Noble and strong. Part of the Warriors Three.”

“Sounds like quite the boyfriend.”

“Oh, we were never romantic.” Loki placed his piece where he intended it to go. “Just having a little fun during the curious years of our youth.”

“Bet he was handsome.”

“Ooh, devilishly so.”

“Like you, I suppose.” Luna slapped a hand over her mouth as her eyes went saucer-wide. She bent her head. Filled with shame and embarrassment, she couldn’t look at him.

Loki, however, was filled with pride and delight. “Like me? You find me handsome?” He teased with a growing smirk.

Luna picked up a puzzle piece and hunted for a place to put it. “What’s it to you if I think so?” Quick as he could, Loki reached across the table and snatched the piece from her hand. “Hey, give that back!” she exclaimed and lunged after his recoiling hand.

He held his arm as far behind him as he could. “Not until you confess.”

“Confess what?”

“That you find me attractive.”

“You already know the answer,” Luna scuttled on her knees around the table to Loki’s side, “so give it!” Without anything in the way, she reached for Loki’s fist again. He turned and shuffled backward.

“I’ll give it when you tell me what I want to hear.”

“To you.” Luna looked staggered. “It’s a very late Christmas gift, and I wanted to find a good moment to give it to you, but now is as good as any.”

She was silent for a spell as she admired her new thing. “You got me a vinyl?” she said softly, the smile Loki wished to see on her started to show itself.

“I did have some help from a certain little spider, but he can have thanks later,” he boasted a little. He watched as she tore through the plastic and slid out the inner folder. It took her a few looks to analyze the specificities of it.

Loki nodded. “I know. I just … it felt right.” He stood and held his hands out to take the record from her. She passed it to him, keeping her fingers on the edges, and he set it into the player.

She approached him slowly as he turned on the amp and speakers. “What are you on about?” He set the needle a bit past the middle and closed the lid. The familiar introductory notes to ‘Stairway to Heaven’ graced Luna’s ears. “Our first dance? Never took you for the sentimental type.” Her smile was full, and her eyes bright. It was everything Loki could have asked for.

“Never have been.” He held a hand out to her. “Will you?”

“Of course,” she slipped her hand into his and met his embrace. “But what about the puzzle?”

September 1950

Gene Kelly pulled up into Kay Thompson’s drive way one beautiful fall afternoon in L.A. He discarded his cigarette before walking up to the door. Before he could even knock, the door opened almost frantically.

Kay’s voice had been shaky on the phone when she urged him to come over, but to see the usually well put together Mr. Thompson now all disheveled and worrisome, alarmed him greatly.

“What’s going on?”

She placed her hand on his arm leading him inside, “I’m desperate, Gene. I don’t know what to do for her.”

Gene watched as she placed on hand on her thin hip and the other on her forehead, shutting her eyes for a moment of clarity. He knew of the temporary arrangement. Judy had been fired from Metro and the first few days she handled it well. She went out and partied and ate whatever she wanted. She was in great spirits - happy, laughing. He had been there with her for it. But then it hit her…Judy Garland as unemployed for the first time since she was 2-years-old.

As much as there were cons at the studio, Metro was her home. She didn’t know what to do with herself. At the same time, she was also having more trouble with her marriage. She asked her best friend and Liza’s Godmother, Kay, if she could stay with her for a few days to get her bearings.

Other than her daughter, Judy cut herself off from her friends and family and from Gene to “transition” as she had told him over the phone. He understood 100% and busied himself in work.

“She’s become so depressed and sickly. I’ve tried everything. I think it’s from her withdrawals.”

“She’s gone off her medication again?”

“Yes. Cold turkey. She said, ‘To hell with the studio so hell with my medication.’”

“I admire she’s doing that but she knows how dangerous it can be. Have you called her doctor?”

“No. I want to but she made me swear, no doctors. Gene, she doesn’t give a shit about anything right now. She has been up in that room for day. She won’t talk. She hardly eats.”

“Have you told Vince?”

“He’s called several times. She just ignores him. I got Roger up here but even then she only had a little soup and some vodka for her nerves. SHe is like a living corpse up there. I’ve never seen her like this. If only she’d sit up and tell me to go fuck myself I’d be happy.”

Gene looked more angry than worried.

“That’s not withdrawal. She’s either restless - cleaning, cooking, gardening or she goes berserk and screams and throws shit. Her withdrawal moods come and go in spurts. She doesn’t stay in bed for days during it.”

“Then, what?”

“She’s drowning herself in pity. She’s feeling sorry for herself. She’s making herself depressed and I’m not going to stand for it.”

Without another word he jogged up the stairs. When he came to the spare bedroom, Gene didn’t knock or call out her name, he banged the door open and stood there. She was in bed, in her black slip, motionless. Her hair was uncombed and days old mascara was crumbled under her eyes. The room was dark and muggy and a disc on the record player continuously skipped. He crossed the room and took the needle off the record before he walked over to the drapes. After throwing them open, he opened the window to let some fresh air in. Turning back around to face her, he saw she had turned on her other side to face away from the light.

“You need to get up,” he said showing no empathy.

When she didn’t respond, his voice became almost demanding, “Judy.”

“Just a little while longer. Let me rest a little bit longer. I’m so tired,” she said in a frail whisper.

“If you get up and move, you won’t be so damn tired.”

“What should I get up for, other than my daughter?”

“You were let go from a contract, you’re at a dry spell in your marriage - you’re not dead so stop acting like you are.”

“Go away,” she mumbled.

Gene had his hands on his waist and was biting his lower lip as if in thought as he continued to observe the back of her.

“Alright, that’s it.”

With one swift move, he rolled her over on her back and into his arms. He immediately noticed how much lighter she felt. Judy was limp and confused at first mumbling what he was doing as he walked across the room.

As he started down the stairs, she started kicking and pushing against his chest becoming more lively. Kay perked up in surprise as they walked towards her. Judy started hitting anywhere she could reach screaming profanities, demanding he let her go. Kay quickly stepped out of the way as they passed her and headed down the hall and through the kitchen.

Gene let Judy down when she hit his face but he immediately bent down, throwing her over his shoulder and continued to walk out the back patio doors as she kicked and punched at his back yelling. “Let met go you son of a bitch!”

“Gladly!”

Kay’s mouth opened as she stepped into her backyard in just enough time to see Gene throw Judy into the very cold underground pool like a rag doll.

When Judy resurfaced, she let out a very surprised and appalled yelp, not just from the cold water but from his actions. Gene stood above looking down at her with a very serious expression. She glided through the water to the steps. Without a word, he took his jacket suit off and put it around her shoulders. As he did, her breath came out in spurts through her nose, her eyes fixed like a bull. Without warning, her hand slapped him across the cheek that even Kay closed her eyes at the sharp sound. Judy took his jacket off and threw it at him before going back into the house, her wet slip clinging to her body.

Kay cleared her throat, “You okay?”

“I expected that.”

“I can’t believe you did that.”

“Something had to wake her ass up.”

“Well, you got her feisty again, that’s for sure.”

“And I’m not finished, either.”

“Well, if there’s going to be more fireworks, I think I’ll head out.”

“I’m sorry Kay.”

“Darling, I have a brunch date anyways, and dinner plans as well. Maybe you can get her to eat.”

“I’ll try.”

“Adios,” she said before she grabbed her purse and headed out.

As Gene head up the stairs, he sighed with inevitable prediction of what he would encounter atop the stairs. When he came to her bedroom, her wet slip was on the floor and she was securing a warm robe around her waist.

”I never did anything to you,” she whispered.

He didn’t catch the bait, “No, it’s what you’re doing to yourself.”

“I was resting!” Judy yelled through tears.

“For days on end?! Staying in bed, not eating, not even taking a damn shower and only getting up for a piss is not ‘just resting’ Judy!”

“Fuck you!”

Her spark was back and it made him relieved.

“Honey, I’m just trying to help. I’m trying to open your eyes. I’m not here for a pity party,” he calmly stated.

“Get out,” she calmly stated back, but was starting to shake.

Gene crossed his arms leaning on the door, “I can’t do that.”

Without warning, Judy grab bed a crystal ashtray next to her and threw it at him. He quickly jumped out of the way as it hit the door frame.

“Get out! GET OUT!” she screamed with such force it’d clear a tree of birds.

She grabbed a pillow and threw it which he caught and tossed it aside, “Baby, calm..” he umped out of the way again as her perfume bottle came flying, “For fuck’s sake!” and shut the door behind him.

Gene sat there, his back to her door, listening to her screams, her frustration. He let her have it out. Maybe it’d help her let go. But he didn’t know that it was jump starting a prolonged withdrawal.

He didn’t know how long it had been since he had dozed off when her door opened startling him.

She stood there pale, uncontrollably shaking, looking at him like death.

“Darling…I don’t feel so good,” she genuinely cried scared.

He had only gotten up on his knees to stand when she started to faint. He caught her and they sank back to the floor. This was her withdrawal. He knew it the second he saw her. He’d seen it before in Boston, but she’d had doctors and was medically safe. He didn’t know if she could hear him, but he spoke anyways as he held her back to his chest.

“Judy, I’m calling a doctor.”

He went to move her, but her hand clasped his wrist hard, her inaudible response. Gene knew the risks of a doctor. For one, she’d be put on more medication to assist with the withdrawal symptoms, something Gene thought total asinine. It was something she didn’t want either. And two, the news of Judy would spread easily. Not necessarily from the doctor himself, but from her files. It had happened before. He understood. You couldn’t trust anyone.

“Alright honey, I’ll bargain with you,” he whispered in her ear, “I’ll do this with you, but if anything life threatening happens, I’m calling an ambulance.”

For hours, there in the hallway, Gene held her close as she shook, going from cold to hot sweats, moaned in agony and went in and out of consciousness. He talked to her, encouraged her and even tried telling her funny anecdotes from work, though he did all this through his own tears, swallowing sobs as her fists clenched his pant legs.

During this time, Kay came home. She got Gene whatever he needed such as a wet rag, a blanket, a glass of water. She let them have their privacy, but kept the doctor on standby just in case. They were both sleeping peacefully against the wall when Kay left for dinner.

Gene woke up with a start, groggy. He checked his watch at the time before realizing Judy was gone and got up frantic.

“Judy!”

He looked in the room but she wasn’t there. Then heard a splash in the bathroom. When he saw her in the bathtub, he smiled. She had color to her face again and her shaking had subsided.

“Hi.”

“Hi,” she smiled back.

“How you feeling?”

“Good. Weak, but better.”

“I bet you’ll feel better after that bath. When’d you get up?”

“10 minutes ago. Kay left a note. She went to dinner. I need food.”

“Now that is the smartest thing I’ve heard you say today.”

Appetite was always the first thing that indicated her withdrawal completion last time, too, and it boosted his spirits.

“I’m aware,” he chuckled.

Gene sighed, “Which means no more us?”

She sat up, hugging her knees to her chest, “You said you wished you could fix your marriage for Kerry’s sake. Why don’t you take this opportunity? We have to at least try.”

Gene couldn’t argue that and he nodded biting his bottom lip.

“I also might go somewhere with Liza, you know, a mini vacation away.”

“That would be really good for you, I think.”

“I don’t know what the future holds, but I have to live in the present, and right now I’m still a wife.”

Gene couldn’t believe how much she changed in 7 hours time. It amazed him, amused him and made him proud. He placed his hand on her cheek, softly caressing the skin there with his thumb.

“You’re so wise, you know that?”

“I’m not pushing you out of my life,” she teared up, “I just need to know if my marriage if worth keeping in it.”

“And I’ll do the same.”

She nodded scooting forward to rest her forehead against his and linked her fingers through his.

“You’ve done so much for me.”

“This is the last thing you’re asking of me isn’t it? To let you go, for not at least.”

“No.”

Judy maneuvered to straddle his lap and kissed him sensually, “Make love to me.”
