Dubai public transport is very convenient if you are travelling with family, friends or going solo and includes ladies only options as well as family friendly or VIP services.

To facilitate the use of Dubai public transport the Roads and Transportation Authority introduced a NOL Smartcard for commuters to use on all Dubai public transport modes in operation. This includes Dubai Metro and tram, busses and water busses but excludes metered taxis. The NOL cards may be purchased from ticket offices, ticket vending machines, RTA customer services centers and authorised sales agents (Redha Al-Ansari Exchange, Carrefour, Spinneys and Waitrose) and topped up with additional credit when necessary.

The RTA Smart Taxi apps have been replaced by the S’Hail app that allows users to plan a journey using different transport options and routes. This service accepts cash or credit / debit card payments but NOL cards are not accepted as payment.

Dubai Airport taxi

This is a good option if your hotel does not provide a free Dubai Airport transfer. I always use Dubai Airport taxis when I arrive back in Dubai from vacation abroad or visits to family in South Africa.

There are Pink Taxis with lady drivers and I usually take one of these from the airport arrivals taxi stand. This is suitable for solo female travelers visiting Dubai for the first time or groups of ladies travelling together.

Licensed metered taxis operated by the Dubai Taxi Corporation and it’s franchisees are available at all the terminals of Dubai International and Al Maktoum International Airports.

Many metered taxis now accept debit / credit card payments in addition to cash, and it is advisable to ask if you are not carrying cash.

Limousine taxis are luxury vehicles with uniformed well groomed professional drivers and are available from the airports as well as all locations in the emirate. Rates include metered rates, zone based or time based rates.

Airport taxis are specifically for visitors arriving at the Dubai airports and will deliver passengers to any location within Dubai or another emirate. The starting rate is AED 25 / US$ 6.80, plus additional fare per km depending on the type of vehicle used.

Dubai public transport – Metered Taxis

Dubai metered taxis operate all around Dubai 7 days week including on religious festivals and public holidays. I have my own vehicle but do occasionally use taxis when I think that it will be difficult to find parking at my destination.

Dubai taxis have special services for People of Determination (disabled passengers), ladies and families.

Dubai Taxi operates 7 seater vehicles for larger families travelling together.

All Dubai taxis are metered taxis and they have strict rules of operation. The Dubai Taxi far calculator starting rate is AED 8 plus additional fare per km depending on the type of vehicle used. The starting rate increases to AED 9 plus after 10pm and there are higher rates during peak hours and weekends. This service is available all hours through the Dubai Taxi dispatch center.

There are pickup locations for taxis in Dubai at most malls and hotels in the city and commuters may hail them on the street or make a Dubai taxi booking via the Dubai Taxi dispatch center RTA taxi number on 04-2080808.

RTA taxi booking will soon be made available via the Hala app, a recently announced new e-hailing service joint venture between RTA and Careem to enable bookings via the Careem app for all Dubai Taxi services. Dubai taxi fare booked through the Hala app will start at AED 8 during the day, AED 9 at night increase to AED 12 start during peak hours for app bookings.

Dubai Taxi also offers taxi rental with professional drivers at competitive rates with 24 hour advance booking.

Dubai public transport – Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro consists of two lines, a Green Line and a Red Line. Within a few years the metro has become one of the most popular means of transport for local residents because Dubai Metro fares are so much cheaper than metered taxis and it services all the major areas. For those areas not covered by metro services, commuters are able to catch a bus from a feeder metro station to their chosen destination.

If you are planning to use public transport during your stay you should check whether your accommodation is near a Dubai metro line station.

The metro lines do not operate for 24 hours and have different opening and closing times.

Dubai International airport has multiple stops on the Red Line of the Dubai Metro system and commuters may use a NOL card for payment.

Al Maktoum International airport does not currently have a direct metro connection and travelers can get on the network at the Ibn Batutta Mall metro station.

Visitors are encouraged to observe the rules of conduct on the metro trains to avoid fines.

You should obtain an updated metro map at the metro station to ensure that you can follow the correct route.

Please note the Dubai metro timings on Friday as they start much later than during the working week.

Dubai public transport – Busses

The Dubai bus services network inside the emirate covers many internal routes and services many metro stations and urban areas. There are also inter-emirate services operating between Dubai and other emirates.

Many bus stops in Dubai are air-conditioned and there is no reason to break a sweat while waiting for a bus.

To ride on Dubai busses commuters have to tap their NOL Smartcard on entry and exiting the bus and must have a minimum balance of AED 7.50 when using the bus.

There are public busses from all terminals at Dubai International Airport to all areas in the city.

There are public busses on route F55 from Al Maktoum International Airport to Ibn Battutal Mall and on F55 A from Satwa station to the airport.

There are bus routes to all neighborhoods originating from the main bus stations at Al Ghubaiba and the Gold Souk from 5 am to 12 midnight.

There are also sub stations at Al Satwa, Al Qusais, Al Quoz Industrial with services from 5 am to 11 pm and Jebel Ali from 6 am to 10:10 pm.

Metro feeder stations are operational at Al Rashidiya, Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Mall, Abu Hail and Etisalat from 5:15 am to 1:10 am the next day.

Dubai public transport – Dubai Tram

Currently the Dubai Tram services the Dubai Marina, JBR and areas along King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Street (formerly Al Sufouh Road). It links to the Palm Jumeirah Monorail at the Palm Jumeirah Tram station.

The tram also links to the Red Line of the Dubai Metro system at the Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Damac Metro stations.

NOL Smartcards can be purchased at ticket vending machines at the tram stations.

To ride the Dubai tram, commuters must have a NOL Smartcard with the minimum balance to pay for a tram ride.

There are separate coach cabins for women and children and special cabins for disabled commuters.

Dubai Marine Services

Old Dubai was settled around the Dubai Creek and the waterways of the city still provide many transportation routes. This includes the Dubai Abra used between the Deira and Bur Dubai sides of the creek.

To utilise the Dubai Marine Services commuters may use NOL Smartcards or BOS Viva tickets purchased at the station of boarding. Please check the requirement before boarding.

The Dubai marine services include the Dubai Water bus (air conditioned abras), Dubai Abra, Dubai Water taxi and the Dubai Ferry.

Water bus Dubai is air conditioned and accommodates a maximum of 23 passengers, including disabled passengers. There is a toilet on board as well as a small viewing deck. To utilise the Water busses commuters must purchase Bos Viva tickets before boarding. A Dubai Marina water bus All Day Pass costs AED 25 for unlimited trips in one day along the Dubai Marina route and is valid for one day from the date of purchase.

There are air conditioned abras (20 passengers), petrol heritage abras (20 passengers)  and electrical traditional abras (9 passengers) all serving different routes along the Dubai Creek for AED 2 per trip.

The Dubai water taxi services are private, air conditioned luxury services that operate to 43 stations along the Dubai Creek, Dubai Water Canal and the Dubai coastline. It seats a maximum of 9 passengers and is suitable for disabled passengers. Trips must be booked at least 30 minutes in advance to ensure availability and commuters must arrive at the boarding area 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled trip time.

There are air conditioned Dubai Ferry services on five different routes that include historical and touristic sites between old Dubai and Dubai Marina and carries a maximum of 100 passengers.

E-hailing services

Uber and Careem are also licensed to operate in the city and their rates are very similar to Dubai Taxis although they do not have taxi markings and are usually luxury vehicles.

A recent initiative encourages locals to sign up with these services to utilise their vehicles and create another avenue for income generation.

The Uber and Careem services can be booked and paid for online or via their apps. The cost is calculated and quoted before the trip commences and there are no meters involved.

Getting around Dubai on public transport is a breeze as long as you know your options and the quickest mode of transport to get to your destination. Options like the Dubai metro, Dubai busses and the Dubai marine services are useful if you want to experience Dubai like a resident and not rely only on metered taxis to see the city.

Meet the Courageous Indian Woman Travelling the World Solo – On a Wheelchair!

In the second post of my Solo Traveller Series – which showcases the journey of solo travellers, especially solo female travellers, from India and other parts of Asia – I’m excited to introduce Parvinder Chawla, a Mumbai local and wheelchair traveller who isn’t afraid to travel the world solo. This post shares the challenges and joys of wheelchair travel, highlights destinations friendly towards wheelchair travellers and offers travel advice for disabled travellers and travel inspiration for all solo travellers. It was pure serendipity that I landed up in Parvinder Chawla’s house on a rainy Mumbai night. When last minute plans took me to the city, I searched desperately for any available Airbnb in Bandra and booked the spare room in Parvinder’s house – not knowing that I was going to stumble upon her incredibly courageous story.

Her baby face, her infectious laugh and her warm welcome put me at ease immediately. She too, loves travelling, seeking out new cultures, putting herself out of her comfort zone, trusting in the kindness of strangers halfway across the world. There’s one difference though – she’s on a wheelchair and her body movement is restricted.

Even around her own house, I noticed that she could only walk a few steps before having to sit or lie down – this acute sense of tiredness in her limbs makes her use a wheelchair most of the time. She had to muster up the energy to chat with me late into the night, and the bed and toilet seat were positioned unusually high to make it easier for her to get on and off easily. It’s hard enough for us, average travellers, to find the courage to travel alone. So as I sat there, hearing about her adventures – paragliding in Taiwan, travelling alone in China, zip-lining in Ecuador – I could only imagine the courage it must take her to board a flight, wheelchair in tow, to an unknown part of the world, confident of having a good time all by herself.

In her thirties and beyond, she’s explored 18 countries across 6 continents – many of them solo. And when I reached out to her for this story, she was setting off on her most challenging journey yet – a month-long solo backpacking trip across Europe, with no fixed plans and no pre-booked accommodations!

A happy childhood – and an unfulfilled passion

Parvinder (Pammu) recalls her childhood and early teen years as happy, bubbly, and exciting. She was an active kid and loved the outdoors – skating and swimming; playing hockey, cricket and badminton; going for picnics and hikes. At age fifteen though, she started to develop rheumatoid arthritis and experience pain in her arms and knees. By age twenty-one, the pain had worsened and she had to use a wheelchair to move around.

She recalls being very ill by the time she finished college; she couldn’t move her limbs at all. Perhaps it was sheer willpower that got her through this difficult time, perhaps the unfulfilled passion of travelling and living life on her own terms.

Taking small steps to travel alone

“At some point, I felt I could do it and then there was no stopping me. That’s when all my adventures began.” ~ Parvinder

In her late twenties, in a situation where most people would give up and surrender to living miserably, Parvinder began to dream of travelling the world – despite being confined to her (then manual) wheelchair.

Her friends invited her to join them on a trip to Jammu and Kashmir, and along with a helper, off she went – her second time away from Punjab and Mumbai, her two homes (the first time was to London, when she went to meet someone she had gotten to know on jeevansathi.com; he turned to be a fraud, but that’s a story you have to wait for her to blog about!). She was immediately bitten by the travel bug and impulsively decided to book a trip to Mauritius with a tour company – alone, yet part of a group with other travellers. She then travelled to Malaysia with a single friend, gradually building the confidence to travel by herself.

Her first solo trip happened on impulse – when she decided to fly to Bali from Malaysia, all alone! She recalls staying in a basic hotel, taking a one-day tour of Bali, then exploring alone on her wheelchair – asking kind strangers to help her off the chair or up steps.

Why travel solo?

“I figured out I was happier when I was travelling alone. Because when I’m on my wheelchair, I have no limitations.” ~ Parvinder

Like many of us, Parvinder initially thought she’d love to travel with her family and friends. But with time, she got tired of waiting for someone else’s company – and figured out she was happier travelling on her own. Her (now automatic) wheelchair gives her the flexibility of “walking” long distances without feeling tired; it’s easier to make plans on her own time; she always finds kind people when she needs help; and ends up meeting and talking to more people when she’s alone. 

In China for instance, Parvinder says she was rather surprised to discover that much like India, trains, buses and metros were not geared towards wheelchair passengers. Often when she asked passers-by to help give her a push up a steep ramp, they declined – possibly because they didn’t understand what she was saying. That changed on a disappointing afternoon outside the metro station, when she was having no luck figuring out how to get to her train. A lady – headed hurriedly in the opposite direction – luckily understood some English and helped Parvinder, not only to the entrance on the other side of the street, but until they met the metro staff so she could explain where Parvinder needed to go!

Funding her travels and family support

Besides support from her family, Parvinder’s dabbled in several projects to fund her travels: from working in a call centre to fund her trip to Mauritius, to babysitting, to running a catering service. Her Airbnb in Mumbai is also a steady source of income – and travel inspiration!

Her family initially worried about her safety and expenses while undertaking trips by herself. But as time went by and they began to see how happy she was following her dreams, they set aside their worries and started to cheer her on. They also chipped in by contacting friends and distant relatives in places she travelled to, so she could feel at home right away. Her cousin aptly nicknamed her “globetrotter”.

The challenges of being a solo wheelchair traveller

“There’s nothing you can prepare for, especially when you’re on the move. You have to have that confidence, that attitude of fearlessness.” ~ Parvinder

For an average traveller, it’s easy to stay in a hostel, hotel or Airbnb, run after a bus, squeeze into an elevator, make lunch plans with a fellow traveller or take a local tour. But she has so many other things to consider – the height of the bed, whether the washroom door is wide enough for a wheelchair, if an attraction can be accessed with a ramp, if a bus driver will help her on board, for instance. That doesn’t deter her though; she finds ways and tools for whatever she needs to make her day-to-day goals easier, and with time, she’s become better at travel planning. She says she also draws strength from chanting and spirituality.

Many countries around the world – like Australia, Dubai and the US – are wheelchair-friendly and that makes life easier. But in India – where travel infrastructure, public toilets, wheelchair access and safety are all major concerns for travellers with special needs – she prefers to travel with a friend, and usually contacts her accommodation in advance to find a local to help her along the way.

I receive messages every day from fellow dreamers who want to travel solo but are too afraid to take the plunge. Too scared, too unsure, too bogged down by what-ifs. When I shared that with Parvinder, she quickly dismissed these thoughts, as though fear didn’t exist in her dictionary.

Advice for people who dream of travelling

“Just keep the fear away. You need to have an open mind to feel free and have new experiences. Go out. Feel alive. You will die one day, so why take so much stress? There’s so much to see, so much to experience. Just go out there and do it.” ~ Parvinder

On the metro in Australia – which Parvinder has found to be one of the world’s most wheelchair-friendly countries – she met another woman on a wheelchair, a local who confessed she only ever did the route to her aunt’s house and back, and who was really surprised (and inspired) by Parvinder’s journey. The two have kept in touch, and who knows, might even meet again somewhere in the world one day.

How travelling has changed her

Parvinder believes that travelling has made her a more confident person – transforming her from being so ill that she couldn’t move her limbs to mustering up the courage to go wheelchair-backpacking across Europe alone. She is content being single and appreciates the freedom to spend money on things that make her happy. Her mantra is to enjoy life, no matter the odds, and she feels lucky to have met warm, helpful and friendly people around the world.

We’ll all die one day, she says casually, so why take so much stress?

We arrived at Kyoto by the super fast bullet train passing wonderful views of mount Fuji on the way albeit blink and you’d miss it.

We’d booked a hotel a few minutes from the train station so as not to have to walk with our luggage too far. After 10 minutes of walking and several comments as to the the accuracy of Expedia’s description of “a couple of minutes walk” we found the hotel. Unfortunately it wasn’t our hotel, google maps had let me down again, as it seems to so often. We are still not really getting the hang of Japan. Once we had arrived at the correct hotel Dawn stood for 5 minutes waiting at a disabled toilet door thinking it was a lift. I have put bleach in my eyes after buying some kind of contact lens solution that I really needed to read the instructions and dawn nearly bought Imodium for paracetamol. Japan really needs to learn English, get in the 21st century and stop using little pictures of houses to communicate. It’s dangerous!

Exploring Kyoto was something I had looked forward to, it was the imperial capital of japan for a thousand years and so has Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples galore, is also the home of lots of geishas and to 1.5 million Japanese who seemed to all be out on the day we visited. Having done enough walking in Tokyo we decided to hire bikes in Kyoto, I had a clear plan of where we would visit including Nijo castle, Geisha town, the infamous philosophers path with the cherry blossoms in bloom and various shrines in between. What actually happened was we got lost, tried to bike up the busiest street in Japan, had a row and were about 2 weeks too early for cherry blossoms. In between shouting at each other we did seem to cover the major sites or at least we think we’d did as there’s no English anywhere.

Having visited the temple (purely by accident) where the Last Samurai was filmed we decided to watch the film which includes 0 historical facts but we could say “been there” at various points. Surprisingly and somewhat disappointingly 2018 Japan doesn’t feature a great deal of Samurai or Karate kids or Geisha although you can pay to dress up for a day but Dawn was reluctant. The following day the weather had turned cold and wet, after visiting the castle (not so much of a castle and more of an empty house) rescheduled from the previous day we decided to go to the cinema in the warm. They were showing the Greatest Showman in English with Japanese subtitles so we went for it. The Japanese think everything is rude, this apparently extends to leaving a film before the last credit is shown. We sat for a good ten minutes in silence until the lights went up and the film stopped rolling. We then left the auditorium in silence only broken by me giggling like you do when you are supposed to be quiet. Osaka is just down the road from Kyoto, famous for featuring on superdry t shirts, street food and as Dawn had read, retro video games from the 80’s, so we went there. Our first food tasting from a street vendor was Takoyaki, which looked like batter balls with a choice of toppings. Dawn chose salt and pepper and mayonnaise (??). Had we paid more attention we may have noticed the content of said balls prior to dawn spitting one out. Octopus. Bin.

Dawn played pac man for a while we ate more dirty street food, I had a beer and returned to Kyoto. Our next destination was Hiroshima, obviously famous for being flattened in seconds by an atomic bomb in 1945 along with 150,000 people. The a-bomb museum was sobering and shocking, Dawn was clearly affected by the experience and joined a peace protest involving her being photographed holding a picture of a dove. She is now probably on a political activist black list after signing something indecipherable in the process.

Next on our food list was okonomiyaki a Hiroshima speciality, I won’t lie japan has become a food tour for us now with the odd temple thrown to appease our conscience and the lonely planet guide book. Today’s delight was made by two Japanese ladies on a huge hot plate and featured batter, noodles, seaweed, pork and egg, topped with a sticky sauce and washed down with a now obligatory beer by me.

After a crappy rain day and a quick trip to Miyajima island, this time to see a “floating” shrine, we headed into the Kiso valley to walk in the path of the Samurai on the Nakesendo trail, the old road from Tokyo to Kyoto. We started at an old postal town of Magome and would walk 8k to Tsumago. On the walk we were invited in to share some green tea with Mr Miyagi and enjoyed a pork bun thing and more tea with Mr Miyagi mk 2. Despite being warned to be “bear aware” on the trail I was disappointed not to see one but not really surprised as Dawn rung every bear bell so loudly the bears in Canada probably heard it. 

We tried to check in at yet another wrong hotel and after getting lost trying to find another one, 3 months into our trip Dawn has now demanded she take over navigation responsibilities - 5 days before we go home. Nob. She did however navigate us to a beautiful park featuring some much awaited cherry blossom which finished our amazing Japanese experience perfectly.

And so two white, non-religious, females in a same sex relationship leave Japan. Where could we possibly go - Dubai of course, where else? We had ummed and ahhed about stopping in Dubai as it probably represents everything we consider wrong in the world, that added to the fact we could get arrested and deported made us quite apprehensive. However, the allure of 4 days in the sunshine got the better of our principles. We haven’t ventured far from our very western Sheraton hotel though, only as far as the Burj Khalifa and Nando’s. For the rest of the time before our flight home we have sat by the pool reminiscing on favourite parts of our trip and debating where our next one will be...........

The stations in the Dubai Metro line offer many facilities such as retail outlets and booths, such as coffee shops, boutiques, places to eat and tourist information. This would mean a larger part of the Dubai residential areas would be covered by the Metro. One major plan that is in progress at the moment is to expand the Metro line to the site of Expo 2020. There are also expansion plans for launching 2 more lines, although those plans were put on hold lately. It also offers platform alerts like audible beeps when doors open and closes along with corresponding flashing light signals. Other facilities include lift access in all metro station levels and information displays on screens throughout trains and stations. Taking into consideration the safety,the security and the convenience of the customers. Dubai Metro features over 3000 CCTVs in trains as well as stations.

The proficient train network has its own dedicated Metro Police in order to look into the implementation of the rules. Being entirely automated, each train and station are prepared with Emergency Call Box (ECB). Finally, the metro working hours are from 6AM to 12AM from Saturday to Wednesday, 6AM to 1AM on Thursday, and 10AM to 1AM on Friday. Hours may change during community holidays.

For most people, this doesn’t matter, they can convince themselves that 90% doesn’t exist, because they are ‘healthy’ in every way and will never have to rely on a place, on that inclusive aspect. When an individual does have to rely on that though, it can chip away at their independence and pride, having to rely on someone to help, and unfortunately because of the society we live in, being given this kind of help often goes hand in hand with being pitied.

That’s something that I hate. Because, you do have to almost count on that sometimes, on someone feeling bad for you. Not because you want attention or for other people to look at you and go “Oh you poor broken person” but because sometimes you need something that your average healthy person wouldn’t. I’ve had it at concerts, in classes, at festivals, even in shops.

Because of my ileostomy, my situation usually relies on access to bathrooms to sort my ileostomy bag. But travelling isn’t without complication either. I have to cut my ileostomy bags to size and for the majority of my life I’ve been on some sort of medication, so I always have to explain to every member of staff why I’m carrying what I am. The worst occasion, travel wise, was when I was coming back from Dubai when I was about 16. I’d already had to give my scissors to a member of staff that I would have to try and find if I had an issue with my bag, but as we’re lining up to get on the plane a member of staff comes and pulls me & my parents out of the que, telling us we might not be able to fly & that they were waiting to hear back from a doctor to see. The reason, that I’d had surgery…4 years earlier…So after the doctor called back and said “Of course she can fly, her surgery was years ago & she flew out here with no problem” we walk back through the tunnel and onto the plane and as we’re walking down the aisle, over the speaker comes a voice saying “Sorry for the delay, we had a passenger with a medical issue, but it’s been sorted and now we can take off” and every pair of eyes around turned to look at me. That to me was a perfect example of the medical model. The problem was me and my health. I was the reason there had been a delay. Not the airline and its staff for a ridiculous thing.

It all boils down to the same thing though doesn’t it, the word ‘different’. Sometimes it works in a way that benefits you (like in high school me getting keys and codes to lift and toilets) but no matter how beneficial something is, it still makes you stand out. “Ways of thinking about disability have shifted over time. Until quite recently, disability was seen as a private matter, as something to be hidden: disabled people were seen as wrong or broken, with a body or mind that needed fixing. The accepted approach was medical or charitable, with an individual's impairment the primary focus” (1) The funny thing is that Crohn’s is actually an invisible illness, of course I have surgery scars and my bag, but for the first decade of my life with my illness, I had to convince people there was something going on and then I had my ileostomy done and suddenly that invisible thing became very visible and brought with it a whole new set of problems. Because there will never be a time where my bag and surgery scars aren’t abundantly clear, and that serves as a constant reminder to myself and anyone else that I don’t fit into a ‘normal’ category. That used to bother me a lot, but as I got older, I learned that normal is overrated. If I was going to stand out, then I sure as hell was going to make sure it was on my terms. For anyone reading this that knows me, you know that the words ‘Jo’ & ‘inconspicuous’ don’t go together (and it’s not just because I have green hair) It’s because I’m loud, and opinionated and I will tell as many people as I can about the stuff that’s happened in the past, the stuff that’s played a very large part in shaping who I am. Not because I want people to pity me or because I want to hear some rubbish about how ‘brave’ I am, but because not enough people know about Crohn’s or ileostomy’s. Because if someone as symptoms like;

stomach pain and diarrhoea

Tiredness 

Feeling generally unwell

Mouth ulcers

Loss of appetite and weight loss (2)

They should go to a doctors and get some blood tests taken as results showing high platelet levels can signify the immune system is working against something & if it’s not an infection it could very well be a auto-immune disease

Emirates airlines

I recently flew with two others from Melbourne to London.  

Upon booking through Flight Centre we advised them of my accessibility needs, yet when the time came Emirates wanted us to pay extra to reserve a specific seat, and despite being unable to walk unaided I had to struggle to row 71!

The ground staff were very nice and helpful but the flight attendants, not so much.  As for the plane’s “disabled toilet”, what a joke!  I am unable to walk unaided but if someone helped me grab the one small bar, I could literally reach all 4 walls and lean on them if I had to. It wasn’t any bigger or better equipped. Very disappointing when you pay so much yet are made to feel like you shouldn’t be there, should you dare to need a bit more space, ( space is money remember!)

Dubai was nice but there wasn’t an airport chair waiting, so the flight attendant said maybe we’d like to sit in the plane we’d been in for 15 hours and wait.  Maybe not.

When the wheelchair arrived the operator of the manual chair wouldn’t let anyone else push it or let it out of his sight, and I was zoomed to the flight lounge so fast, I couldn’t even read a sign let alone go in a shop.

On the way home we were given what was supposedly a mobility access seat in row 32 but it was no different, the armrest didn’t even lift up.

The Gatwick employee was really nice and at least because she was a lady, (sorry men), she understood that it was ok and far more appropriate to let my Mum wheel me to the toilet.  The lady still couldn’t leave me but I felt like she was less overbearing.  It also helped that because was a departure point and not a transit point, so I could use my walking frame almost until the gate.

It was the same again at  Dubai airport with the overly possessive wheelchair operator and total lack of freedom Side note: Woah those chairs are so hard and uncomfortable Side note 2: I don’t think we’re going to steal your super uncomfortable wheelchair without brakes and also who would even bother with all the security, so not feeling like a heavily monitored criminal would be nice.

When we landed back in Melbourne, my walk frame took so long, we actually thought they’d lost it.

Look they certainly weren’t the worst, but definitely not the best either.  My major point of feedback would be that more needs to happen to make people with a disability feel welcome.  I just felt like I wasn’t valued or as important as the able-bodied travellers and that to accommodate me was an inconvenience.

I felt it was an average experience, so I give them 3/5.
