Check Your Lens

We all see the world through a lens. That lens is made up of our past experiences, our expectations, our predispositions, and countless other things that make each of us an individual. Over time, our lens changes…because over time as a person each of us changes. What we don’t take into account is how those changes affect the lens through which we see the world. I am fifty years old and I see the world differently than I did when I was 15, 25, 35, or even 45 years old. Over those years, I have had experiences that changed me as a person…I graduated from high school and college, I got married, I graduated with my Master’s Degree and taught at a University, I had kids, I became an failed entrepreneur, I started a different business, I buried grandparents and friends, I traveled the world, and so many other things big and small. At my core, I still feel the same—I still feel like that 15-year-old teenager—but over time, the lens through which I see the world is very different. Sometimes though, when I react in a certain way I find it useful to stop and think about what has caused my response. At times when I react with anger or dare I admit it, disdain or hatred, I try to take a beat and think about my lens. I ask myself what experiences caused my lens to become dirty, cloudy, warped, or discolored? Is my reaction normal or an over-reaction? I reflect upon my feelings. Sometimes, I realize my lens has allowed me to see things clearly, and sometimes it makes me see things in a distorted manner. If I am being honest, sometimes my lens makes me see things that don’t even exist. The lens through which you see the world is a powerful thing. Check your lens.
