So, I'm making this it's own post as I don't want to accidentally tag everyone in a reblog? Is that how tumblr works?? I NO LONGER KNOW - let's get to it, though! I've been waiting for the weekend to write so from a very rough draft of Flesh & Metal: All music is composed of notes; and if those notes were keys that fell silent, one by one, it remained music.
Oh no! Hyphen's relatives! Oh well, it's probably fine...
Tagging: @lyriumspectre @totally-not-deacon @kookaburra1701 @pikkish @zombiecatboys But nobody feel like you have to; I just like this kind of thing, so feel free to if you want to!

14 and 20 for the ask ❓
14. that one thing you see in fics all the time
oop i probably don't read enough fic to be able to notice recurring tropes... i guess just the usual (based on what i see in tags and summaries), woobifying or yassifying characters like ulfric, lucien, cicero, martin etc, bashing characters like delphine or flat-out refusing to engage with any attempt on the part of the games to introduce any nuance. it's all very bad faith. also fics that just hash out the questlines without departing from canon in any way, i mean i GET it but i'm absolutely not going to read that sorry </3
20. part of canon you found tedious or boring
hate to say it, but oblivion gates :( the fact there are something like 50 (?) in the game makes me lose my mind. if i was redesigning the oblivion main quest, keeping the plot largely the same but working on the mechanics a little, i'd create maybe 10 ish unique oblivion gates that are each solved in a slightly different way, as opposed to having umpteen 'hack your way through monsters until you reach the sigil stone' gates with the same 7 maps :/

For the Skyrim Themed Asks:
Rabbit: Are you learning anything new?
Nirnroot: What skill tree do you use often?
Riften: What's (Theodora's) personality like?
<3
Thank you so much @dirty-bosmer :)
Rabbit: I'm learning a few new things, I'm learning R stats for my job and I picked up some watercolours that I'm gonna play around with. I used to be really into art but since starting university I've had less time on my hands
Nirnroot: Is it basic to say archery? It's probably Archery, Speechcraft or Two-Handed when I do a heavy-armour barbarian build (this used to be my standard because big axe go brrrrrr) Theodora dual-wields Draven swords, with some archery.
Riften: Ouuuuuu someone has asked about my girl Theo! When she is young she experiences a lot of trauma (particularly in losing her parents in the Great War and growing up in an orphanage), she copes with this trauma by putting up walls to prevent people from getting too close. She manages the pain primarily through drinking. Theodora joins the Thieves Guild in Cryodiil in her mid-teens and begins to take on dangerous jobs because she really doesn't care if she lives/gets thrown in jail or dies. After a few years or recklessness and some Daedra worship, she learns she is the Dragonborn. Learning she is the Dragonborn is a major turning point in her life as she feels she finally has a purpose. Theodora takes this as an opportunity to learn more about Akatosh, eventually considering herself devoted to the Dragon God. Through Akatosh she is able to come to terms with her pain and develops into wiser person, although the partying never really went away.

Hello there, hopefully I'm not just barging in..! Naturally, feel free to disregard any of this. I am in no way an Elder Scrolls Master, ahaha, but...
I think 'atheism' is not something you're going to find in any setting with semi-verifiable divinities. And it shouldn't be, directly; modern atheism is very much in reaction to modern religious organisation, and would have developed very differently under different systems. A lot of fantasy settings suffer by trying to attach, for example, modern monotheist structure to classical polytheist structure. The two may have in common rules, orders, and tenets, but that's like trying to make a comparison between a modern state and a state that existed millennia prior. What is going to be popular - and is actually present in a lot of NPCs, not just Else - is misotheism, the idea that the Gods exist, but are either not powerful and good, not powerful at all, fundamentally wicked, or any other of a number of grievances. Misotheism functions on a spectrum; from the light grumbling of a sailor who hasn't seen Kynareth's fair winds once to the ruminations of a Necromancer who thinks of Arkay and thinks of crushing tradition and short-sightedness. Else, for example, isn't an atheist; she is dissatisfied with the predominant gods, and has turned to a different divinity to carry her cause. (And that brute, Mehrunes, too, when Vaermina is always with us... Oh, well.) Misotheism exists, isn't seen, and is largely tolerated, but almost certainly varies in practise from region to region, from people to people. Think of how many people blaspheme mildly and don't really have any thoughts on the divinities of their area or culture..? Drawing from my area of expertise... Can you imagine the Imperial Cult going after someone who goes 'aye, that darn... Stendarr... Owes me money, bloody useless god...'? They aren't going to. Why would they? But theoretically, there are probably laws on the books regarding devotion and mors minorum (sorry, i laughed) that Imperials who follow the Imperial Divines are meant to observe and theoretically remain enforceable. Very very rarely, this might even be leveraged against a criminal when no other charge sticks; some guy had this happen to him, though his name eludes me. The Dwemer, I would say, are not an atheistic people; they are described as being pious, but simultaneously ambitious, and I think - with the acceptance that there are many Dwemer we will never be able to hear from or read of or talk to in any capacity, whose opinions are lost - were not misotheistic, either. Rather, they saw divinity as something like the hypercosmic gods of Neoplatonism; There, interesting, worthy of emulation until they could be surpassed. This explains the jump from 'observant of Dwemer religion in their own way' to 'we're the gods now;' to them, it was a natural progression towards the 'One,' or in their own case, Godhead. Does atheism exist in Tamriel in any capacity..? Absolutely, yes; though I think rather then being akin to atheism as we know it, it is best to understand it as tangibly different from our own. The atheist in Nirn is not going to turn down divine intervention (or ALMSIVI, as it were); they probably acknowledge the existence of the gods, or that they existed, but do not see their presence in the era they are in of the time. So, finding them would depend entirely on looking in unusual sources. Those that follow some form of visible, observable gods are not going to be more prone to it, of course; and so long as there are shrines that cure disease and gateways to actual realms of Oblivion, they are going to be a very small minority. My likely candidates would be, in no particular order...
Argonians who believe all gods are dead (I can't remember where I read this, I have the Imperial Library open, but please feel free to punt me back to Quagmire if I'm wrong); if the gods are dead, they are not worthy of worship. Baleful Sithis gave instructions to embrace change, and these provided useful tools for a society, cultural instructions, but they no longer need religious dogma. If the gods are dead, why worship any of them? Probably still pretty rare, as the Hist is a religious experience or so I'm told.
In the various Nedic peoples, or peoples of Men, amongst those who have somehow travelled to a realm E.G. Sovngarde; if it is just kind of like a place on Nirn, is it really that mystical? These are the closest you'd get to what we'd think of as atheists, I think - disputing the divinity believed to be present there, and wondering at a scholarly and/or naturally magickal explanation. Even still, however, I think it's important to caveat that they will be influenced by their culture and the religious dogma they were raised in, and may be semi-atheistic; denying the divinity of other interpretations of godhead/the Monomyth, but not their own.
The Thalmor. Not exactly a happy interpretation to be sure, but, an elaboration of the above; if non-existence is preferable to existence, and some divinities are false, why not all of them? This would obviously go against the very religious doctrines that permeate the Thalmor as a whole, since it is - in essence - religious extremism that fuels their end goal, but I would imagine there are quite a few who are quietly attracted to the idea.
Among the world in general, I think atheism would only be found reliably in those hermits who do not see or interact with anything supernatural, the heart of the Empire or sufficiently large cities where you'll find outre beliefs simply by virtue of size, and among cultures or people where gods are acknowledged, but have recently lost something, real or perceived. Leading to the sense that our gods didn't protect us; they are hardly worthwhile. And a split between those who adopt no divinities or ways, and those who question faith - close to modern agnosticism - and abandon it. (Different again because many of them will acknowledge the gods; but simply will not worship them, honour them, or interact with them in a meaningful way of they can help it.) Whew! I wrote quite a lot there, so do feel free to ignore it. Keep in mind that I'm probably missing one (1) obvious lore book that obviates everything that I've written, but as world-building goes, this is a pet interest of mine. Since I'm quite proud of a character I've written that completely understands gods as divine, but also wants to open 'em up, that sounds cool, I'm obligated to weigh in here. I hope, even if you disagree or aren't sure, it was a fun read, and I in no want it to be seen as a final answer!
There are probably literal atheists in Tamriel the same way there are flat-earthers in the real world. There must also be people who disavow religion, folks who acknowledge the existence of gods but don’t venerate them (much as we accept the power of gravity without fanfare.) Then there are people who are skeptical of gods actions and intentions, people who think that deities exaggerate their impact on the physical world, who cast doubt on commonly accepted religious beliefs and refuse to worship on that basis…
I guess my question is, what would all of these types of people be called? Would they all be called atheists and would they call themselves atheists?
#nientedenada#dirty-bosmer#tes#I very much wanted to sign off as an in-character theologian#sort of like how the writers used to do that in their Q&A...#please do understand this isn't meant to be comprehensive!#but that it's very much a pet interest of mine.#theoretically - you could also probably find a goodly number of demi-atheists in the Valenwood#due to the highly personalistic structure of religion there.#what's the difference between a mer who worships one thousand gods#and one who only worships at their own altar - or none at all?#but that lies beyond my knowledge and I will let those wiser weigh in.#gosh this was fun#hmn i can't add line breaks between bullet points for readability? blech!#also - this purposely ignores more outre ideas like mananauts and so forth#as that's an entirely different kettle of slaughterfish!#and changes some of what i went on about.#you could ALSO make a case for Sheogorath as god-of-sceptics#that purposefully drives listeners to doubt; tes already has several 'testing gods.'#furthermore - those who stay doubtful may be rewarded by sheogorath allowing for a mutually beneficial kind of...#'i won't acknowledge you if you won't acknowledge me here's twenty septims'-theism.#ALSO - how could I forget?#there is a case to be made that ALMSIVI themselves#are prone to this. at least vivec; at least vehk.#that the 'conservative' faction committed the ultimate apostasy and assumed the mantle of godhood#weighed on each in turn. to perceive the dream and the dreamer as well#might in turn make lines and colours and ideas that form divinities seem nothing more then lines and colours and ideas.#hardly different from you or i or the notes of a song.

🔮 What’s your dream job?
🌿 Describe your favorite outfit.
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
hey!!
🔮 Park Warden/Ranger for the Breacon Beacons! It's not far from where I live, and I really want to work outdoors and I like. Unfortunately, I have next to no education, and don't really know how to get into that kind of work lol.
🌿 I wear mostly comfortable and practical clothes. Right now I'm very happy with my outfit, and it's this:
It's colder out so I'm doing the long sleeve + short sleeve thing, normally I fuckin hate doin it because it feels weird. Anyway, I have a lot of submedia shirts and they're my favourites, alongside my Leftöver crack shirt.
🐸 not really sure?? I'm not good at labeling myself. I've definitely been in the punk scene for over a decade, though, which means a lot of that part of you is defined by that kind of music and shit if that makes sense? And in that case, Crack rock steady, cymar!

Diplomatic Immunity: Elf NPC Overhaul
I wanted to cover the elves from this quest together, because I think it's a neat little change of pace.
Malborn
For Malborn, I actually referenced what was probably supposed to actually be his design, which ended up just being used as a secret container when he takes your stuff for the quest.
It is interesting, he is rather rough and harrowed looking, dirty with dark circles under his eyes. I personally think he was originally going to have an appearance swap after his escape from the embassy.
So, anyways: i kept what I feel like is his iconic hair, but, inspired by the 'fake' malborn look, gave his rosacea (instead of the vanilla rough skin complexion.)
Brelas
Brelas is a Bosmer servant at the party. I've always felt bad for her, as one distraction leads to her being imprisoned. Her look is heavily inspired by ESO Bosmer. She sports some custom hair, worn up for practical reasons. As with all the Bosmer I intend to edit, she uses eyes with star-shaped pupils.
Elenwen
I feel like most mods just make her into a bombshell model-type, so I tried to keep the gist of her vanilla design and lean into 'powerful, scary lady' angle. I tried to keep her in line with highborn Altmer standards, but it is not quite enough to hide her predatory nature.
Rulindil
Rulindil is a Thalmor interrogator, so I wanted him to have a washed out skintone from lack of sun (I imagine he is kept busy.) He has a somewhat gaunt appearance, and a grisly little splatter of blood across his cheek.

Trying to fill my dash with good vibes - what are your favourite tesblr blogs? Art, memes, writers, anything!
Good vibes for all! What a great ask, thank you. I might turn this into a tag game of sorts.
I'll divide this into categories to make things easy to navigate. This is in no way comprehensive, because otherwise I'd be here all day just listing literally everyone I follow. But here's where I'll start!
Favorite Aesthetic TES Blogs: Gifs, screenshots, edits, in-game gorgeousness~ - @darkelfguy
Favorite Art & Writing Blogs: These blogs don't only post their own art and writing, but also reblog a lot from the community! - @falmerbrook - @moriche - @dirty-bosmer Favorite Lore Blogs: Blogs that tend to have canon-friendly lore posts and civil discussions - @nientedenada - @kookaburra1701 - @greyborn2
Favorite Meme Blogs: Blogs that just makes me smile or have a chuckle - @incorrectskyrimquotes - @nerevar-quote-and-star
Well-Rounded Tesblr Blogs: This category goes out to the homies who post all the good shit from art to writing to memes to shitposts to lore dumps. The MVPs in my books. - @skyrim-forever - @trickstarbrave - @v1ctory-or-sovngarde - @captain-of-silvenar - @throughtrialbyfire - @elavoria
I seriously had to cut myself off otherwise I would have just kept listing blogs LMAO. If I tagged you in this, please feel free to add your own favorites and maybe we can get a nice chain going!

What is it about birds that you enjoy :)
Thank you, my friend; this is such a good question..? Since I'm going to talk a bit, those uninterested in the sum total of the birdposting tag can roll their eyes and avoid this one, ahaha. Conversation about how great flora, fauna, and especially birds are under the cut!
First, some mood music.
Topsy already knows some of my predilections, here, but unless people peek at my tags, I suppose it'd be easy to say 'oh, this fellow just casually likes birds.' And in a way, that's true; I like pretty much all creatures, real or fictional. I tend to like natural things more then I like people, which I don't think is entirely uncommon among writers, nor does it excuse behaving cruelly to other people (something that is easily forgotten). But first and foremost, I've got a bit of a connection to them. My parents raised me on a steady diet of fiction, classical religion and mythology, and folk tales. A lot of these were 'world' tales, which meant whatever they thought was cool at the time, because my parents were hippies and I love them for that! But just as much was from our culture, which means bird. Lots and lots of bird. Slavic culture has tonnes of mythological bird-ery in it, just as much as mushrooms. I could make the statement that it's more about birds then bears or anything else people want to associate with it, but I think many people would - disagree with that, ahaha. A famous writer (who a lot of people do not care for and I understand that) went by the pen-name Sirin. Who's Sirin? Good question.
But there's tonnes of cool mysterious bird entities over yonder; Alkonost, Gamayun, sometimes even Maiden Midday is depicted as a bird or bird-like. Naturally, some bird or another on fire is important, too. We just - really like birds. But why, though, and why me? Well... I think it's pretty obvious from how I talk and some of my stories that I've travelled a lot and lived a lot of places. One of the few constants is that I've watched the travel of wings, and wondered at that freedom; moving often feels fatalistic, especially when you're young. I don't really have a place or people I consider 'home.' Not an unusual feeling, but... Actually, since I can be as personal as I want this far down, I often disassociate a bit from feeling human. Part of that is the usual stuff a lot of us go through, but part of it is unique to me. I can't tell you how many times, in how many places, I spent watching distant forms lazily drift overhead, wishing I could do nature sketches, but quite content to simply exist, with no greater goal in mind. One of the places I miss most, though, that I think of most as 'home' if I could choose where 'home' is are the moorlands of a certain island nation, rich with heather. I could paint those landscapes from my mind's eye, if you asked me to, also if I could paint. Bahahaha! Brings us nicely to the next point which is that I stumbled unto a very unlikely piece of media and fell in love with a hawk. That's just how these things go; if I cry a lot about a very big bird lady, that's why. Finally, a good friend whom I only occasionally interact with is the second-or-third-best-bird in my life, he's the best*. But these are all personal; the backstory, as you will. In general, outside of my personal reasons - the fact that I like them for how unencumbered they are, their habits, what they mean to me - I like birds a lot because they're pretty! From the most colourful sparkling dainty lads to the tones of feathers that are almost steel. The wingspans of birds unfurling is kind of magical; I don't know if it's some primal sprout mindset that thinks birds == dinosaurs == very cool, or simply that I find the textile sense of wingspan unfolding Reall Cool, but again, I wish I could do scientific sketches or similar. I love how hygienic they are, by and large, and how incredibly goofy most birds are when they've ascertained you are not there to interfere in any way and are just watching. Because all animals are goofballs, but birds are goofy in their own unique way. The many differences in how birds treat each other, how weird and alien some nests look (for nestbuilders), what birds choose to steal everything not nailed down, and which ones are very picky. I just think they're neat! And there are lots of animals I love; I love bees, social insects, asocial solitary pollinators... I love cats and dogs, obviously, I love domesticated animals and weird wild critters, danger noodles and - really I just love nature in general, as mentioned above. But if I was going to choose one (1) kind of animal to watch for, it'd be birds. They're heartening, beautiful, and a bit melancholic.
Thanks for reading this far; here are some magpies being silly. Hopefully this was at least a little interesting to read, and see you around..!
#dirty-bosmer#thanks for the question!#it was incredibly fun answering this one. I might delete it at some point due to it being marginally personal but#I had a lot of fun answering it!

For the tes oc questions (if you're taking them):
14. How well-liked is your oc? What is their reputation, if they’re well-known? Are they simply liked/disliked, or are they respected but feared, or personally liked but not taken seriously, etc? Do major factions consider your oc an important player?
25. If your oc is part of one of the more morally questionable or outright evil factions, how do they justify it to themselves? Do they still consider themselves as morally good? How well known is their affiliation to these groups? Do they have separate personas (e.g. Dragonborn to some people, Listener to others)? Do their family/friends know? If they have separate personas, how do they keep their less than righteous activities secret?
heheehee
14. Jórunn
Jórunn is liked more than she realises, I think. First impressions tend to be prickly but there's an honesty to her and a certain awkward, deadbeat sense of humour that people find appealing. She and Raydrin deliberately maintain a low profile so her reputation as Dragonborn precedes her reputation as just Jórunn-- it isn't until much later in the story that she really starts getting recognised.
25. Mathyas
Mathyas doesn't justify it to himself, really, though it's not for want of trying-- he just can't. It began as a means of saving his own skin, was allowed to continue by way of pure inertia, and then ultimately is justified by applying a particularly cut-throat interpretation of utilitarianism to international affairs. He abandons any faith in his own strength of moral character (though he is not as irredeemable as he believes himself to be). And for the year that he is with the Brotherhood he ceases to exist in any meaningful sense outside of it-- he leaves as little trace of himself as he can manage and never lingers anywhere for longer than a night or two.

Work-in-Progress Wednesday
I have a secret. Yes, I do. (If you know what it is, don't spoil it for the others.) >:)
Tagging: @oblivions-dawn @dirty-bosmer @skyrim-forever @bougainvillea-and-saltwater @hircines-hunter

What could have caused someone to make such a noise? She runs faster, bumping into one of the maids and not apologizing. Faster. She turns a corner and almost knocks one of the sconces off the walls. Faster. At this point, Dahlia isn’t sure if what she hears is the thundering of her footsteps or the frantic beating of her heart.
When she spills into the Great Hall, it takes a moment for her to come to terms with the nightmare she sees laid before her. Ulfric clutches Galmar to his chest with his housecarl in turn madly swinging his fists towards his torso, his back, his face—anywhere and everywhere that he can reach. Ralof on his knees, face frozen and pale as if he had seen a ghost. And Dahlia—
As Dahlia draws closer, she spies a small crate, a box not much bigger than her head. One step at a time she approaches it, feet taking her there automatically despite the pit she can feel growing in her stomach. She does not want to look. Her eyes dart back and forth, spinning around the room as she looks for Narile, Lydia, Sylvi—but instead they are drawn to the darkened insides of the box.
A piercing scream tears its way up her throat, beating out the bile which threatens to upend her stomach.
