actually i think this is part of a long term shift in power dynamics where none of us have quite recovered from the conception of Popular Kids having been a very specific mould of superficial and sporty, but the actual mainstream has been shifting for a long time now. bookish people still Feel as if they are part of a marginalized other. this has already begun to catch up to men, it’s now largely recognized that like... liking star wars isn’t actually Uncool anymore, that being a nerd is actually expected. but i think this dynamic is playing out slower in women. i guarantee that all the girls that made my life hell in middle school while i was out there looking like a dirtrat and setting small fires were like... bookish and indie and intellectual and wore glasses and went on to study humanities and be vegetarian. and i’m sure they have narratives in their head about being the gangly awkward one. and the thing is, it’s true! girls are pitted against one another and are ALWAYS victims of each other, regardless of their social strata. but i think we have to be careful about the chips these things put on our shoulders. especially because if you conceptualize yourself as The Weird One, it actually can make u less sympathetic to those Weirder Than U
