Farah Black's autistic-coding explained!

She has unusual speech patterns that can also be attributed to her anxiety; she talks very fast and often talks to herself

She's very knowledgeable about law, the police force and various weapons, often using this knowledge to correct people or give them advice (like telling Dirk about a system he can use in his detective agency, and telling Tina she's using the wrong type of holster) or figure out that someone's lying (like soul-swapped Agent Weedle not knowing how to be a convincing policeman)

She's generally more quiet and serious than most of the other characters, and one of the only times she shows a substantial amount of enthusiasm is at the music festival when everyone's under Suzie's spell

She's always very focused on whatever task she has to do and doesn't seem to get distracted at all

She doesn't notice that Todd has a crush on her in season 1 and just seems confused when he hints at it ("my clothes look good on you." "okay ... thanks?")

Small detail, but in season 2 episode 2 she infodumps to Sherriff Hobbs while sorting and lining up the pens on his desk

Part of her character arc through seasons 1 and 2 is about embracing her weirdness (at first she was very insistent that she's a perfectly normal person, but slowly comes to realise that she has found her place among people who are just as weird as she is and she doesn't have to worry about being normal any more)

 > When Todd catches up with him and Farah, he schools his expressions from excited to have seen him to bored/uninterested, both to show that he isn’t THAT excited he’s there - he seems to think having a bigger reaction to things he likes may cause unwanted reactions from those around him, so he constantly tones himself down

> When they get to the powerhouse, he’s SOOO excited about climbing the fence - I headcanon Dirk as a mix of sensory avoidant and sensory seeking, and his impulsivity is also very relatable

> “Push my bum!! Make me go up!!!” - I might die of second hand embarrassment everytime I watch this scene, but it’s so relatable! I, too, say things without noticing it might have double meaning and it doesn’t dawn on me until hours or years later

> Todd calls out to him, “Hey! Don’t wander off!” - elopping, we tend to wander off without noticing or letting others know, or stay behind because we stopped to look at something, often also involves not noticing danger

> “I think the message is… you’re going to die” - no filter, absolutely first thing that comes to mind is already halfway out his mouth, ADHD ambassador

> “You can’t just walk in blindly? You’re saying that to ME?” - Same trait as before, elopping all the way

> Todd goes, “When shit hits the fan, you fall apart!” - EXTREMELY common for us to not see the consequences or effects coming up until we have to deal with it, especially in situations we’ve never been through before, which is a constant

> *smiling * “...I hope you’re not smiling” DEEP frown - my beautiful son who has cartoonish expressions and can’t hide his emotions very well, we are one and the same

> In the strip down scene we see he wears a white undershirt, which could be providing deep pressure which is great for sensory seeking autistic people!! Also goes in hand with me headcanoning him as trans, double up tight shirt as a binder AND sensory stim

>  “Hope you’re not claustrophobic” / “No, I don’t even like coffee” - two things: he has audio processing issues and misunderstood what was said, AND he responded based on what he understood even if it didn’t make sense for the context of the situation at hand

what's your favourite thing about writing dirk?? any extra hcs or personal things you like to add when writing him?? (coming from someone who adores how you write him being autistic)

I am so sorry I haven't gotten to this until now! I was busy when you sent this in... I still am busy (I'm procrastinating, send help) but we're doing it now! And AHHH TY! I'm glad it hits for you! I said in another ask, my favorite thing about writing him is hands down the voice. I love how absolutely absurd the things he says are, and he says them with complete mundanity. For Dirk, the absurd is mundane and I think there is something so fun in that. It's also very autistic. I think autistic people see the world with a greater sense of absurdism than allistics, whether that be positive or negative (because honestly it does depend! autism is beautiful but it still is a disability and Dirk is an excellent example of this.)

I think my favorite absurdist Dirk quote I've ever written is from chapter five of the Muse fic, Hate This And I'll Love You (I added the bits before it for context. Really it's the bovine burglar bit that's my favorite):

        The apartment was dark, save the TV that shuffled through Netflix’s screen saver slideshow. Odd, Todd never leaves the telly on.          So what’s a detective to do? He investigated.          He called out once more, “Todd?”          He tip-toed his way into the living room, he wasn’t quite sure if it was Todd or a mysteriously bovine burglar watching their television so he aired on the side of caution. One never knows when there might be a cow stealing back your, or rather it’s milk.

HTAILY was really an autistic indulgence in every possible way, and not only with writing a favorite character as autistic and highlighting it. When you take into consideration I wrote this before I read Dorian Gray, this was the original Jack Harkness/Dorian Gray fic for me. Crossing over my niche special interest (Muse) with a hyperfixation (DGHDA), which is why I consider it my favorite/best finished fic I've ever written. And I'm so glad it's gotten the love I think it deserves!

The famous "Angst Song" scene was actually a personal detail to answer that part of your question! Muse's "The Small Print" is a song I have a lot of childhood memories attached to! Back before Muse's Origin of Symmetry was my favorite album, Muse's Absolution was my favorite and "The Small Print" was hands down my favorite track on it. I have vivid memories of dancing like a madman to it in my kitchen while unloading the dishwasher, which was my main chore as a child. I played what I called "the silverware game" where I had to only unload one type of silverware, starting with the butterknives and ending with the small spoons, and not mix up the sizes of the forks or spoons when picking them up, otherwise I lost... and I think that really speaks for itself with how autistic it is.

So yeah, when crafting a Muse-inspired fic, having Dirk dancing and stimming to "The Small Print" at some point was an absolute no-brainer. It was always going to be there one way or another. And it honestly makes me a little emotional to know that when people think of my writing autistic Dirk, that scene is the one they remember. (iirc you mentioned loving that scene before, and I know other people have said that too)

just wanted to let you know that if i didn't realize too late i would have submitted mirabel and bruno. mirabel is so adhd coded with her 500 different hobbies, none of which she excels at (same) and her RSD (same) and her colorful imagination/view of the world shown thru musical numbers

and i firmly believe bruno's autistic on account of the isolation and rejection from his family (same) and the struggle with inappropriate comments ("it looks like rain" to a woman who makes it rain when she's upset. on her wedding day.) and the unhealthy attachment to the family that doesn't want him (same)

There's so many duos that I would have liked to highlight through this bracket, but just didn't get enough nominations to justify putting them in 😭

Mirabel and Bruno are definitely on my list of honourable mentions along with Miko and Five from Glitch Techs. And every character from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Encanto is such an awesome movie for SO many reasons, and one of those reasons is definitely how it captures that feeling of wanting to be 'useful' to be accepted by your family unit. The movie ever!!!
