I couldn't resist sitting in front of his camera for a shot. Since one of the flashes didn't fire, he actually shot me twice, but I think I prefer the first, more contrasty one. My 52 Frames: Week 21

So this week I tried something a little different.

I finally got around to getting a couple boxes of direct positive paper. It’s a finicky beast with very little exposure latitude but, after six sheets and about two hours of playing around, I finally have a feel for how it works and what I might be able to do with it.

Direct positive paper, for those that don’t know, is photo paper that doesn’t require a negative exposure to form a positive image. You put it in the camera and expose it just like you would a sheet of film (other than greatly different exposure times). It is processed like any other print and results in a positive image. It took me the first 4 sheets to remember that, when working in positive rather than negative, that more exposure means less image.

This is Harmon DPP from Ilford. It’s maybe ISO 3, yes the single digit 3 at the maximum. It’s really designed, I think, for pinhole photography and long exposure times. It’s VERY contrasty with few gray tones but I can think of LOTS of scenes that would be appropriate for. A bit of research indicates that, if one pre-flashes the paper (exposing it to a hit of diffused, non-image forming light) before making the actual image exposure, that the contrast can be reduced a bit and more detail brought out in the shadows to midtones. I kind of like the harsh look though and I think this will be a fun media to work with occasionally.
