wip wednesday
The team drifts obediently over to take their seats around the table. Ding Guozhu shoots Gu Yiran a worried look that unsettles him. Gu Yiran sits down with something tight and anxious in the pit of his stomach. Even after they’ve gathered, Zheng Bei stands alone at the head of the table, hands clenched, hands bowed. “Captain Zheng,” says Director Gao, voice going uncharacteristically firm for a moment, “could we get started?”
Zheng Bei jolts, then masters himself. “Director Gao,” he says, “thank you for joining us today.” His voice is strangely solemn. He sounds like someone else, like he’s reading from a script. His gaze is fixed somewhere above everyone’s head. “It’s been my honor to lead this task force for the last two and a half months, and now that this case has closed I’m grateful now that this task force can be disbanded.” Gu Yiran stops listening. It all makes sense now — how reluctant Zheng Bei had been to bring up anything about the case whenever he was visiting in the hospital, how tense Zheng Bei had been this morning, why he’d been drinking last night. They’re staring down the barrel of the end of everything, and again, Gu Yiran is the last to figure it out.  Gu Yiran doesn’t hear anything else for a while, not until Director Gao comes around the table to stand beside Zheng Bei at the head of it and says, “— and Gu-laoshi’s expertise in these new drug products, and all the hours he’s put into analysis —” To the side of Director Gao’s clasped hands, there’s one last pile of unfiled paperwork, with a blue folder peeking out of the middle.   Gu Yiran jolts back into his body, and somehow he’s already standing. “Director Gao,” Gu Yiran hears himself say, unnecessarily, because Director Gao is already staring at him. “The case can’t be closed yet.” He’s speaking too loudly. “Gu-laoshi?” Director Gao asks, frowning. “Is there some kind of problem?”
from the fourth draft of this fic! things are finally getting tense :)))))))))))))))))))

something that touches back by lunarriviera fandom: 雪迷宫 | The First Shot (TV) rating: E words: 13.7k warnings: no archive warnings apply relationships: Gu Yiran/Zheng Bei characters: Ding Guozhu, Zhang Xueyao, Zheng Nan, Zheng Bei's father, Zheng Bei's mother, Zhao Xiaoguang, Xin Tiegang tags: Gu Yiran POV, post-canon, first time, getting together, there was only one bed, police, undercover, arguing, crime fighting, angst and hurt/comfort, team as family, family feels, idiots in love
Gu Yiran had taken everything off the situation board that morning, and boxed it all up for the archives. There was one photo he kept, ripped in half. He thought Zheng Bei might want it back, later. Zheng Bei’s face is drawn and his eyes are haunted. He's hardly spoken since he woke up. Gu Yiran hates it. He doesn’t know what to do, to make it alright again.

wip wednesday
There’s a quiet murmur of sound in the room, movement and conversation. Gu Yiran waits, lets it wash over him until he can make sense of it. Two people speaking in low voices, the occasional lilt into a question before the sound dips back down into [murmuring]. Ding Guozhu, and Zhang Xiaoguang. The quiet metal sound of a thermos opening, and Ding Guozhu’s voice cuts out for a moment.  Zheng Bei’s voice isn’t there.  Neither is Yaoyao’s, Gu Yiran reminds himself.   It’s only that — The last thing Gu Yiran remembers, concretely, with any certainty, is Zheng Bei. The look on Zheng Bei’s face, bursting in through the door, the way his expression changed when he saw Gu Yiran, something almost frantic in his eyes. The very last thing Gu Yiran remembers is the shape of Gu Yiran’s name in Zheng Bei’s mouth — not Gu-laoshi, for once, but Gu Yiran. To Gu Yiran’s right, the door to the hospital room unlatches.  Ding Guozhu and Zhang Xiaoguang’s conversation quiets as the door swings open. First, Yaoyao’s voice, “I bet you’re all starving! Lao Jiu—” and then footsteps coming toward Gu Yiran’s hospital bed, too light and quick to be Zheng Bei’s. There’s a hurried shushing from the corner. The door closes too fast to admit a second person.  Gu Yiran’s eyes are already open. He’s already disappointed.
from the third draft! hopefully the penultimate draft - at least the one scene i have drafted feels like it's only about a draft worth of revision from being done, so i'm optimistic. i'm trying a new thing where i am simultaneously constructing the "outline" / very chaotic list of events by scene for the third draft while also starting to write it. i think i'm liking it so far.

wip wednesday
Gu Yiran is still thinking about the dinner when he and Zheng Bei get back to Zheng Bei’s apartment, as they’re going through their nighttime routines.
The group’s conversation had turned, expectedly, to everyone’s plans after the case closed. Lao Jiu’s official retirement would be at the end of the month, and after that he had traveling plans with his granddaughter. Ding Guozhu and Zhao Xiaoguang were both traveling back to their respective hometowns for a week, and had spent a good portion of dinner fretting over how to avoid telling their parents about the more unsavory aspects of this case. Zhang Xueyao would take her parents out on holiday, had already bought the tickets and booked their first hotel.
Zheng Bei, Gu Yiran noticed, hadn’t volunteered anything about his own plans.
But the dinner conversation had slid right past him and refocused on Gu Yiran’s post-case plans, once he was back in Huazhou. Zheng Bei had inserted himself into the conversation then, and said, “Gu-laoshi, maybe we’ll all come visit you in Huazhou after this case closes. Even if there isn’t work for us to do together, we can all just go there for fun, right?”
Gu Yiran couldn’t imagine what Zheng Bei might find attractive about Huazhou, what might be there that he wanted to visit. Compared to Zheng Bei, there was so much less Gu Yiran could offer as a host — he doesn’t have a ready set of loyal and familiar teammates, or the warmth and welcome of a bustling family home. But it was easier to play along, to agree, to believe, just for that moment, that any of them would still remember or want to visit after this case ended and the immediate bonds of intense collaborative work had faded. And so, Gu Yiran had merely said, “Of course I’d be glad to have you all,” and smiled, and carefully had not met Zheng Bei’s eyes.
a slightly longer snippet from draft 3.5 (-_-) of the beiran fic bc alas i think this section is going to die in this round of revisions and i quite like it!

oh my god, the narrative inevitability and irony of gu yiran letting li wenlong go in episode 29 is destroying me (in a good way). like, earlier in the show, gu yiran is one we see pulling zheng bei aside after they find out that jiang xiaohai is lele is qing yi's godson. gu yiran is the one that stares zheng bei down and forces him to answer, aloud, whether he'll be able to put aside his personal ties to do his job as a police officer. gu yiran is the one that stands there and nods approvingly when zheng bei says, i will pick doing the right thing over my personal relationship to lele. but gu yiran never answered that himself!
i'd been wondering why, when we finally see gu yiran confess his true reason for taking this case and coming to halan, when he says, so quietly, you must think me selfish, why it was ding guozhu who was so effusive with his rebuttal, why we only say zheng bei say, we know the kind of person you are. that seemed so churlish and unexpectedly reserved, coming from zheng bei. but i think this moment in episode 29 is why! in this critical moment, zheng bei shows up to the aftermath of gu yiran facing li wenlong down, sees li wenlong jump the window and gu yiran just staring after him, yanks gu yiran's handgun from him to count the bullets and sees they're all still there, and has his — most well-hidden doubts? deepest and unwanted fears? — confirmed: in the moment when it matters, gu yiran will pick his personal goals over the greater good.
like oh goddddd we've had this aspect of gu yiran's character foreshadowed for like, ten episodes! just because gu yiran knows about it doesn't mean he can help it! this is so delicious to me!!!!!!!
