Rodney Barnes Takes Ash To A Groovy Place In 'Army Of Darkness: 1979'
Rodney Barnes Takes Ash To A Groovy Place In ‘Army Of Darkness: 1979’
It’s time for Ash Williams to finally go somewhere groovy. Taking him there is Killadelphia‘s Rodney Barnes in Army of Darkness: 1979, a new series from Dynamite Entertainment about the Evil Dead hero due to launch this September. In the new comic book, Ash finds himself in late 1970s New York. The city is in an advanced state of decay with gangs fighting for every block in the South Bronx. But…

Army of Darkness 1979 releasing this September.
Just when we thought Dynamite was done releasing Army of Darkness comic book spinoffs for the year, yet another called Army of Darkness 1979 is releasing this September!
Ash is back, baby… in the groovy 1970s?! Army of Darkness: 1979 debuts this September from critically acclaimed writer Rodney Barnes.
The superstar creator of the hit Image Comics series Killadelphia brings his supernatural horror chops to one of the genre’s most (in)famous characters. Ashley Joanna Williams finds himself this time in late 70s New York City. In a less cleaned up era, that means gangs tussle for every block in the South Bronx. And these particular gangs model themselves after zombies and vampires. Things only get even more out of control when they find the one and only Necronomicon!
“I relished the opportunity to take on Army of Darkness,” said writer Rodney Barnes. “The tone is different from everything I’ve done to date, so there’s that challenge. I loved the film and the graphic novels based on the film, so it’s an honor to add my name to the great folks that have done the books prior to this one.”
Barnes is joined in this horror flashback romp by artist Tom Garcia (Pathfinder, Hellraiser), colorist Dinei Ribero, and letterer Troy Peteri. This crew assembles together to guide Ash through his latest comedy horror adventure. But will he or even the creative team survive the journey?
With his background as a screenwriter and producer in Hollywood, Barnes has contributed to The Boondocks, My Wife and Kids, Everbody Hates Chris, Marvel’s Runaways, American Gods, and is currently an executive producer/writer on HBO’s untitled drama following the 1980s “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers. With his love of film and 1970s culture, Barnes is pulling from cult classics like The Warriors on this Army of Darkness tale. Within comics, Barnes is the creator of the Eisner Award-nominated Killadelphia, and has written Falcon and Lando (Star Wars) for Marvel.
Rodney’s co-creator and collaborator on Killadelphia, Jason Shawn Alexander, joins on for the lead cover. Zombie maestro Arthur Suydam contributes one of course, with an homage to Escape from New York. And they’re joined by Junggeun Yoon and Stuart Sayger, with their own memorable styles of Ash.

Bettie Page in The Curse of the Banshee #5
Tumblr media
Bettie Page in The Curse of the Banshee #5 Dynamite Entertainment 2021 Written by Stephen Mooney Illustrated by Jethro Morales Coloured by Dinei Ribero Lettered by Taylor Esposito with Elizabeth Sharland    This is it! The Irish adventure of Bettie Page is almost over? Will she escape the forever curse of the Banshee and return, unscathed, the life of a Hollywood starlet?    Something that I greatly appreciate is that Stephen really ties this series into everything that has come before and this includes all those supernatural stories.  Bettie has been touched by ancient magic and while, hopefully, we’ll probably never know why her, it doesn't matter because we’ve seen it happen time and time again.  This allows for some interesting ways for this to be told.  We see this in the opening here which is so incredibly well rendered and goes a long way in explaining Bettie’s past way better than I’m currently capable of doing.  This also shows us the whole deal with the Banshee and why she’s drawn to Bettie and it all ties together beautifully.  The revelations that Stephen brings us here are fantastic and it really is the perfect spot for this to happen as it doesn’t ruin the suspense of the story and only serves to give the reader that moment of surprise that we crave.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter really does a phenomenal job in bringing their personalities to the forefront.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story the more complete it all feels.    I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen.  The avenues that the layers explore really do such an amazing job in bringing this story to its natural and logical, yes logical, conclusion while we see how much great depth, dimension and complexity this adds to the story.  The way that everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceptionally well.    The interiors here are fantastic.  The linework is sensational and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality in the attention to detail is absolutely stunning.  How we see the backgrounds being utilised to enhance and expand the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is told exceedingly well.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a brilliant eye for how colour works and how to maximise their effects.  The Banshee itself is a prime example of what colour is capable of accomplishing.       This series has been a real highlight for me from Dynamite.  If you don’t know the story of Bettie Page then you should really do some research because she’s a fascinating woman to be sure.  That there is so much mystery and mystique surrounding her and her time away from the spotlight and this just fuels the fans of the fire of what her life was really like.  Personally I think this kind of alternate history is the kind that blends fact, fiction, rumours and such and creates a much larger than life caricature of Bettie that is thrilling.  The writing is superb, the characterization is on point and the interiors here are utterly delightful and this is what we can expect from this team on their new upcoming series then we’re in for a hell of a good time.

Stephen Mooney To Write Dynamite’s New ‘Sheena: Queen Of The Jungle’
Sheena: Queen of the Jungle is coming back for a new series with writer Stephen Mooney taking her on a new adventure. Is Sheena still queen in an urban jungle? Mooney, artist Jethro Morales, and colorist Dinei Ribero set out to answer that question this November. “It’s exciting getting to play with these kinds of toys and accepting that challenge of adding something new and worthy to the…

The Army of Darkness #3
Tumblr media
The Army of Darkness 1979 #3 Dynamite Entertainment 2021 Written by Rodney Barnes Illustrated by Tom Garcia Coloured by Dinei Ribero Lettered by Troy Peteri    The streets of New York City are in a panic! Awash with Deadites and rival gangs seeking to control the power of the Necronomicon! The big apple has only one hope… Ash Williams. Good knowing you, NYC!     Did you know: Deadites are a species of parasitic demons that seek to possess the bodies of mortals and feast on the souls of living creatures.    First of all I have to hand it to Rodney here for the best gang in creation!  When they made their debut, this all female gang, I was floored by not only the sheer audacity of using but how amazingly well it works within the context of the story.  Actually the whole story works incredibly well with Ash being taken back in time to find and retrieve the Necronomicon which has fallen into the hands of a gang and it’s being used to terrorise the city.  Rodney really understands the nature of the franchise and Ash in ways that make this such an absolute joy to read.  It takes that right combination of bravery, fear, absurdity and sheer luck to pull off what Ash is able to do and it’s really nice to see that translate so well here in this series.    I’m a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information are presented exceptionally well.  The character development, which is truly sensational for just an FYI, that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which does a magnificent job in continuing to flesh out the personalities.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story we’re constantly reminded just how much fun Ash is.    I’m a fan of the way that we see this being structured as well as how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen.  I also like the way these layers open up new avenues to be explored.  Each gang we meet raises more questions and expands the city in ways I wasn’t prepared for.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are impeccably rendered.    I’m loving the interior artwork here.  Sure it’s some classic comic book style work but it is so expressive and so in your face at times that it works on so many levels.  The linework is clean, crisp and sharp while with the varying weights and techniques being utilised we see the detail within the work have its moments to shine.  We see some really nice backgrounds being utilised and this makes me wish we’d see more of them as they do wonders to expand and enhance the moments.  They also work really well within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow works shows a really nice understanding of how colour works.     One of the strongest things this has going for it is that it not only fits in the television and film part of the franchise but it’s a completely stand alone entity as well.  You don’t have to have watched all the films and seasons of the show to enjoy this.  It is new reader friendly and works to thrill those of us who adore everything the franchise has to offer.  There’s some smart, witty writing with this amazing characterisation and these fantastic interiors and there’s not much more you could possibly ask for.

The Army of Darkness 1979 #02
Tumblr media
The Army of Darkness 1979 #02 Dynamite Entertainment 2021 Written by Rodney Barnes Illustrated by Tom Garcia Coloured by Dinei Ribero Lettered by Troy Peteri    Ashley Joanna Williams finds himself this time in late 70s New York City. In a less cleaned up era, that means gangs tussle for every block in the South Bronx. And these particular gangs model themselves after zombies and vampires. Things only get even more out of control when they find the one and only Necronomicon!    I will say that Rodney manages to find that balance between the absurdly silly and some serious horror.  The opening shows just what the Necronomicon is capable of and it’s really kind of intriguingly horrific and makes you realise just how much willpower it takes to overcome its influence that gives Ash a lot more respect than I would have previously given him.  I’m really rather impressed with the way that we see this being told.  How it manages to engage the reader and take them off page, such as my newfound respect for Ash’s willpower, and into realms, thoughts or ideas that are the result of cause and effect is rather exceptional to see.      I really like the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is exceptionally well rendered.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does an absolutely marvellous job in bringing their personalities to the forefront.  It is kind of weird and I like the way we see Ash kind of falls into situations and when you read this you’ll understand what I mean but it’s great to see him portrayed this way.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more I want to see and know.    I like how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen.  How we see the layers open up new avenues to be explored, the various gangs for example, and the whole idea of magic being real to see this kind of depth, dimension and complexity added to the story is wonderfully handled.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is expertly achieved.    There are some really dynamic interiors going on here.  The linework is exceptional and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level of detail within the work that we see is extraordinary.  I will say I wish we’d see more backgrounds being utilised because they really do enhance and expand the moments.  However, that being said, the way we see the composition within the panels brings out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is extremely well rendered.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkable eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colour being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a brilliant eye for how colour works.       This is so much fun.  Ash is inherently one of the more interesting and funny men in horror and he certainly lives up to the reputation that he's built over the years, though there are times whether it’s hard to tell if this is Ash or if it's Bruce as the two have become so interchangeable over the years.  What remains true is that he’s a staple in comics, film and television and regardless of the medium he always manages to save the day, kick some Deadite butt and make us laugh while doing so.  The writing is exceptional and the characterisation is flawlessly rendered while these interiors bring this to life incredibly well and only serves to reinforce my opinion of the franchise.

The Army of Darkness 1979 #1
Tumblr media
The Army of Darkness 1979 #1 Dynamite Entertainment 2021 Written by Rodney Barnes Illustrated by Tom Garcia Coloured by Dinei Ribero Lettered by Troy Peteri    After his most recent appearance in Die!namite Lives, Ashley Williams is retired. Settled down. Haunted by the Deadites and the Necronomicon no more- wait, no, that ain’t right… None of that is true! In fact, not only is Ash still haunted by Deadites and the Necronomicon, but he’s haunted by the both of them in the 1970s (kids, ask your parents. Parents, ask yourselves!)! And what does he find in the South Bronx of the late 70s? Gangs! And what have those gangs found? The Necronomicon. So, what does that make the gangs? Bad-Ass Mxxxerfxxxers.    Dynamite has this uncanny ability to really find the right creators to tell stories about the characters they have and make the reader a huge fan of what they are experiencing.  I like Ash, I think he’s great and funny and the television programme was a hoot an a holler to me.  So I get a little excited when I see he’s got a new appearance going on but that couldn’t have prepared me for this first issue.  What we see here is utterly amazing, incredibly fun and it harkens back to the Evil Dead film that was kitschy as well as terrifying and it has all those elements here ready for us.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter is marvellous.  This does such a magnificent job in bringing all these personalities to the forefront and giving us this first look at who they are.  The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the page revealing the story, introducing the characters and the world they live in we’re gripped by what we see.    How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story begin to emerge, grow and strengthen and we see this done exceptionally well.  How we see these layers open avenues ready to be explored is fantastic and how they add depth, dimension and complexity to the story is superbly done.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is magnificently achieved.    The interiors here are phenomenal.  The linework is clean, crisp and strong and how we see its varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality of detail work we see throughout the book is utterly bloody brilliant.  The creativity and imagination that we see is also exceptionally rendered and it’s within the gangs and the mini cops that we see where that takes on its strongest appearances.  Backgrounds are a mixed bag here, mixed because I really love what we see but we just don’t see enough of them.  Aside from enhancing and expanding the moments they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a brilliant eye for how to use colour and how to maximise its effects.     I am so very impressed with all the different elements that are familiar to Ash and the franchise.  Rodney does a brilliant job with the writing here and the characterisation is sensational while the interiors are phenomenally rendered.  All of this makes for one of the week's most delightful reads.

Bettie Page in The Curse of the Banshee #3
Tumblr media
Bettie Page in The Curse of the Banshee #3 Dynamite Entertainment 2021 Written by Stephen Mooney Illustrated by Jethro Morales Coloured by Dinei Ribero Lettered by Taylor Esposito    In issue 3 Bettie and the Banshee seem to become as one as the curse unfolds all around our hero in high heels (or sensible flats!) Plus: more clues as to the whereabouts of the Key Artefact.    One of the great things about this franchise is that you can have different creative teams do different arcs and they all seem to be part of the same timeline, world, etc, etc.  Bettie is universal in her appeal and it’s nice to see and know that it doesn’t matter who the creative team is, just that they all feel like part of one big happy family.  I almost like the fact that she appears more timid in this issue but then again I think that has a lot to do with the illustrations as well.  So with what we see and how things are presented it makes me wonder if this is a four or five issue series because, selfishly I want it to last longer, I feel like this is reaching a kind of apex point where the end is nigh!      I am really rather enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter really does a magnificent job in fleshing out their personalities even further.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story we’re pulled deeper and deeper into the mystery as it unfolds.      I am more than impressed with the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen.  The new avenues we see opening up alongside the ones that have been established are absolutely wonderful in that they all bring some great depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceedingly well.      The interiors here are strong and interesting.  The creativity and imagination that we see throughout is really exciting to me as the dead who serve the Banshee, who takes centre stage as well, are brought to life with such aplomb.  The linework is nicely laid down and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this detailed work is well rendered.  I do wish we’d see more backgrounds, however, we still see how the composition within the panels brings us depth perception, a sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is marvellous to see.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work is beautifully rendered.  How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a great understanding of how colour works.     Lyss is a great foil for Bettie and yet she loves her and would do anything for her and that kind of friendship, loyalty and so much more is why these work the way they do.  Bettie never has to go it alone, she does and she will but she doesn’t have to and regardless of who complains the truth is a totally different matter.  I will say that this has some spectacular writing and characterisation that’s wrapped around these great interiors adding another stellar story into the files of Bettie Page; Secret Agent!

Bettie Page in The Curse of the Banshee #02 Dynamite Entertainment 2021 Written by Stephen Mooney Illustrated by Jethro Morales Coloured by Dinei Ribero Lettered by Taylor Esposito of Ghost Glyph Studios    In issue #2, things are not as they appear to be in Ireland as Bettie comes face-to-face with the mysterious Banshee. But, with eh ability to alter its shape, the Banshee continues to prove an elusive mystery, one which Bettie Page finds herself hard-pressed to solve!    Gotta say I love how this issue opens up with Bettie trapped by the Banshee, shooting it with her gun and not doing a lick of damage.  One thing is for certain this doesn’t seem like a Scooby Banshee if a gun doesn’t slow her down.  This has turned into one of the best series I’ve been reading and that’s thanks to the liberties taken with Bettie by turning her into a government agent that specialises in the weirder the better cases.  Add into the mix she’s a good shot and a darn fine hand-to-hand combatant and you are just upping the ante for me.  Or course this version of her life and career is much more fascinating than the one where she was making fetish films, becoming a born again Christian and being diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter is magnificent to see.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story it’s easy to fall in love with Bettie and have the need to see and learn more.      I am enjoying how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, evolve and strengthen not mention emerge anew.  These avenues are great and while some are red herrings others will help immensely.  The layers contain the characterisation, the twists & turns and so much more and add this great depth and complexity to the story whether they work with the main arc or not.  How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is so well achieved.      The interiors here are a lot better than I remember, go figure.  The creativity and imagination on display from seeing Maire to the Banshee herself I’m really rather impressed with the detail that we see being put into these.  The linework is great and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail work is sensational. The way we see backgrounds are nicely done as well and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is well rendered.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a very talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work is also pretty marvellous.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a great understanding of colour.     I really am a huge fan of this series and while I never grew up being a Bettie Page fan I certainly knew who she was and her cult icon status.  Women friends of mine worshipped her and if I had seen these stories growing up I might have worshipped her too.  With such smart, intelligent writing and characterisation alongside some really good strong interiors this is the way I wanna fall in love with Bettie Page.
