FE Pride Week - #1: Self-Discovery
<Pairing: Dimitri X Araial (male OC)>
For @fe-pride-week
—
Araial wasn’t used to kindness, especially from anyone around his age. The only person who had treated him with any respect before a certain point was his father - even his own mother had left him behind when he was three days old.
Most nobles were very cruel to Araial. The boy came from a poor family; he was the only child of a single father. He refused to beg for food, instead foraging in the woods, thinking it would help him avoid judgment. Still, the rude looks and whispers continued.
But then, things were different. Someone around his age finally treated him kindly - someone quite unexpected.
The person in question was not just a noble - he was royalty: Faerghus’s own crown prince, Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd. The young prince had defended Araial from his tormentors many times now, even getting into a fistfight with one particularly aggressive bully. And during training, if Araial began growing weak due to hunger, Dimitri would often sneak food out of the castle’s kitchen for him.
Araial was confused at first. He didn’t understand why Dimitri was so kind to him, but he appreciated it.
He more than appreciated it.
He wanted to swear his eternal loyalty to Dimitri, to try to return the favor.
Araial soon realized that he felt more than appreciation for Dimitri. He was unsure of how to label it at first - it felt like love, a feeling described in books Araial had read - but he had never read a book in which a man had loved another man. But still, he eventually realized that it was possible.
People often said that children Araial’s age only had crushes - they didn’t actually fall in love.
But Araial knew differently. He wanted to do whatever he could to return Dimitri’s kindness. He decided to venture into the knighthood in order to be able to protect the prince - what better way to show his appreciation?
Still, he never told anyone of his feelings, out of fear of being ridiculed, or of being rejected.
As he fondly looked back on the past, he smiled warmly at his own worries - they seemed so small now.
Especially since he was now married to the love of his life - the king of Faerghus himself - Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd.

FE Pride Week - #3: Friendship
<Pairing: Dimitri X Araial (male OC)>
For @fe-pride-week
—
Araial and Dimitri were sitting in the courtyard of castle Faerghus, reminiscing about their childhoods.
“You were so adorable, Araial,” Dimitri said with a chuckle.
Araial felt himself begin to blush. “What makes you think that…?”
Dimitri smiled brightly. “For starters, you had a cute appearance. Your hair was always kept in a braid, and you had such a gentle face. And besides that, your actions were cute, too.”
“What do you mean by that…?” Araial asked.
“You were always following me around. I never really understood why, but now that I know more, I realize that it was a sign of your feelings for me. I didn’t mind, though - you were a calming presence.”
Dimitri suddenly seemed to think of something.
“I just remembered… the only thing that made you leave my side besides the day being over is when Ingrid, Sylvain, and Felix visited. You never really stated your reasons. Why did you do that?”
Araial shook his head. “I didn’t want to interrupt your time with your friends.”
“Were we not friends?” Dimitri asked, tilting his head slightly.
Araial was startled by this. “I… well… I wanted to be friends, but I was afraid to ask. I figured that our stations in life were too different, and that you might not feel the same.”
Dimitri placed his hand gently on Araial’s shoulder. “You were - and still are - my friend, Araial. And now, we’re married. We’ll remain together forever, with no worries about our feelings for one another.”
Araial could only smile and nod in agreement.

FE Pride Week - #2: Coming Out
<Pairing: Dimitri X Araial (male OC)>
For @fe-pride-week
(This one’s a bit long, so I apologize!)
—
Dimitri couldn’t help but notice that Araial was acting strangely. He first noticed during his coronation ceremony, during which Araial seemed to be preoccupied with his thoughts. He’d give the proper responses at the right times, but otherwise, he seemed as if only his body was there, not his mind or heart.
Later on, during the post-ceremony celebration, Dimitri searched for Araial, trying to find the younger man to see what was bothering him, but Byleth informed him that Araial had slipped away.
Dimitri went to look for the young knight, knowing exactly where to find him - in the training hall of Faerghus’s castle, where they had first met.
As Dimitri had expected, Araial was sitting on a bench in the training hall, his head buried in his hands. Dimitri called out to him, and he immediately got up, standing at attention.
“Your Majesty!” he said, obviously startled.
Dimitri shook his head. “Araial. There’s no need to be so formal. We’re the only ones here.”
“I know, but… that doesn’t change the fact that you’re the king now…” Araial replied, although his posture did relax. “Still, how did you know to find me here?”
Dimitri smiled warmly, gently placing a hand on Araial’s shoulder. “This place holds great significance to you, does it not? It does for me.”
“It does?” Araial seemed surprised by this.
“Yes, it certainly does,” Dimitri replied. “Who knew that the boy I so often defended as a youth would grow up to be so strong in his own right?”
Araial gave a small smile, but it quickly faded. “What brings you here? Why were you looking for me?” he asked.
“I wanted to ask you about something you said before we entered the castle at Enbarr for our final battle,” Dimitri said, his voice serious.
Araial visibly tensed, which almost stopped Dimitri. But the new king knew that he had to continue if he wanted to help Araial in any way.
“You had tried to tell me something then,” Dimitri began, “but then you said that it ‘wouldn’t work’ and that you’d just be happy to protect me as my knight. What did you mean by that?”
Araial’s gaze turned to the ground, and he shook his head. “My apologies, Your Majesty, but…I can’t tell you. All I can say is that it truly wouldn’t work.”
Dimitri now realized what was bothering Araial. The other man had given up on ever being loved.
Dimitri remembered how - both at the Academy and during the war - Araial was often approached by suitors of all genders, but he would always politely reject them. Dimitri hadn’t known why until recently, when Manuela had told him the truth behind Araial’s actions.
Dimitri knew he had to do something before he lost his chance. He began to speak, but Araial took a few steps back.
“Please, Your Majesty… I don’t wish to discuss this further… My apologies, but I’ll take my leave now…” he said, his voice cracking with emotion. And with that, he began to run.
“Araial!” Dimitri called out, tossing his cloak to the side in preparation to chase him down. He ran after Araial, eventually catching up to the younger man and bringing them both to the ground. Araial struggled, protesting, until Dimitri spoke once more.
“I can’t let you go until you promise me something. Promise me that you won’t run off until you hear what I want to say. If you leave after that, I understand, but please hear me out first.”
The younger man nodded, and Dimitri got off of him and sat to the side. Araial sat across from him, seeming apprehensive.
“The first thing I wanted you to know is that I’m worried about you. Ever since I’ve known you, you’ve always treated those around you with great kindness, but haven’t been nearly as kind to yourself. I want you to take care of yourself as well, but I know you haven’t ever done so. Therefore, I’ll take care of you until you recover from that mindset.”
Araial sighed and shook his head. “I can’t ask that of you, Your Majesty. You’re the king now - you have too many responsibilities now to focus on one of your knights above the others.”
Dimitri braced himself. He was about to say something to Araial that had the potential to change their lives forever. Still, he had to do it.
“This brings me to the second thing I wanted to say to you. You see, that time we nearly lost you in battle… I had commended your loyalty, but then Manuela told me about the difference between loyalty and devotion…and that you weren’t just loyal, but were also devoted. That’s when I realized something about myself.”
Dimitri took a deep breath, and then continued.
“I realized that I had fallen in love with you. I had been feeling that way since shortly after we began attending the Academy, but never knew what the feelings meant until then. I’m sorry I never told you until now.”
Araial began to tear up, trembling heavily. “Your Majesty… Dimitri… I’ve always loved you, but I never thought it would be possible for you to love someone such as myself…”
Dimitri brought Araial close, holding him gently. “It is more than possible. I love you dearly, and I’ll take care of you from now on.”

Last night, I had a dream that helped me finally come up with a name for Dimitri’s son who Araial helps raise. His name is Gabriel Gerald Blaiddyd. His middle name is the name of Araial’s father.

(I was inspired to write another Dimiraial snippet today after chatting with a friend on Discord. Here is the result of my inspiration. It takes place during Azure Moon’s war phase after the battle at Gronder Field.)
———
Araial had spent much of the day wandering around Garreg Mach, looking for natural treasure to add to his collection. He had found a few neat-looking rocks and a fluffy white feather, but the best thing he had found was a whitish-pinkish wildflower, which he had brought to the library to dry and use as a bookmark.
On his way back to his room, he was stopped by a visiting nobleman, who stood in the middle of the path in front of him.
“Please excuse me,” Araial said nervously. “I need to get through.”
The nobleman chuckled. “Aren’t you adorable?” he replied. “Are you spoken for?”
A nervous feeling began to build up inside of Araial, but he tried to hide it.
“No, but I have no interest in being ‘spoken for’. I apologize, but please let me through.”
“Let me go on a date with you,” the noble insisted.
Before Araial could respond, he heard someone else approaching from behind. He worried that the nobleman had an accomplice, so he readied himself for a fight. He was quite relieved when the person behind him spoke - the voice was a welcome one.
“Leave him alone,” the person said, stepping to Araial’s side.
“Your Highness…!” Araial gasped.
The nobleman frowned. “What’s your problem? Do you have an interest in him as well? I was here first, you know.”
“And you stand to lose your land and title if you become known for stalking and harassing people,” Dimitri replied, crossing his arms. “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
The noble shook his head. “All this over some commoner? Fine, count me out, but you won’t find any better,” he scoffed as he left.
“I figured as much - he didn’t care at all,” Dimitri sighed. “But still, I’m worried about you walking to your room alone… Let me walk with you.”
Araial was touched by the offer. “That’s…very kind of you, Your Highness. Would you truly do that?”
“Of course,” Dimitri said with a smile. “Let us be going, then.”
***
Upon reaching Araial’s room, Dimitri placed a hand on the younger man’s shoulder, as he often had in the past.
“If you ever need anyone to walk with you again, let me know. For now, though, I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said, turning to leave.
“Wait!” Araial called.
“What is it?”
Araial blushed slightly as he began to nervously mess with his hair. “I…want to give you this,” he said softly, handing the pressed flower bookmark to Dimitri. “Thank you again for your help.”
Dimitri smiled warmly. “I’m always willing to help a friend.”
And he was. He and Araial continued to remain close, eventually confessing their feelings to one another and marrying shortly thereafter. Through the years, Dimitri read many a book…and he always used Araial’s pressed flower bookmark to keep his place.

Thinking about Dimiraial.
Dimitri ends up fathering an heir through surrogacy. His son, who inherits the Crest of Blaiddyd, is raised by both him and Araial.
When Dimitri and Araial hit their 60s, they retire and let Dimitri’s son (mid-late 30s) take over ruling Faerghus.
Dimitri passes away from illness at age 83. Despite being given a clean bill of health that day, Araial passes away less than two days later. It’s generally agreed that Araial’s passing was due to grief at losing the one he’d loved for 72 years and had been married to for about 60 years.

Post-canon Dimiraial idea:
Dimitri and Araial are speaking to a small group of nobles when Dimitri is overcome by his hallucinations. Araial places himself between Dimitri and the nobles, shielding him from prying eyes as he attempts to comfort him. Araial eventually gets Dimitri to safety and helps him calm down.

Some facts about Araial (my FE:3H OC)
- He is naturally talented in Faith/white magic. He discovered this at the age of five, when he accidentally healed an injured dog while trying to comfort it. He learned how to control this ability rather quickly.
- He loves nature, and enjoys exploring the woods near his home. At first, he only ventures into the woods to find food (his family suffers from food insecurity), but begins to go there for fun because he likes looking for objects (rocks, feathers, etc.) and looking at the plants and animals. His favorite object from the woods is a tiny pinecone.
- He’s underweight from childhood until sometime during his attending the academy, when he begins approaching a healthier weight because he finally gets three meals a day. Unfortunately, during the five year timeskip, he becomes underweight again due to lack of a reliable food source, but - once reunited with the others at Garreg Mach - he begins gaining weight again, finally reaching a healthy weight by the end of the war.
- He begins experiencing romantic feelings towards Dimitri shortly after they meet. At this time, Araial is around 11 years old, but something tells him it’s not just a crush. These feelings grow stronger throughout the years, becoming more and more difficult to hold back…
