First: every time you bring a phone to an independent Samsung repair shop, the company has 24 hours to notify Samsung, providing your name, email, phone number, address, the IMEI of your phone, your warranty status and complaint.
Then, the technician is required to inspect your device for any evidence that you have had it serviced by unauthorized technicians or fixed with third-party replacement parts. If they believe you have failed to act in accord with Samsung's shareholders' interests, the technician is required to *immediately destroy your phone* and notify Samsung.
(This is radioactively illegal, and has been since 1975, when Congress passed the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which protects your right to use third-party parts:)
Why does Samsung do this? They can't help themselves. It's in their nature.

Complex Regulation is Bad Regulation: We Need Simple Enduser Rights
Readers of this blog and/or my book know that I am pro regulation as a way of getting the best out of technological progress. One topic I have covered repeatedly over the years is the need to get past the app store lock-in. The European Digital Markets Act was supposed to accomplish this but Apple gave a middle finger by figuring out a way to comply with the letter of the law while going against its spirit.
We have gone down a path for many years now where regulation has become ever more complex. One argument would be that this is simply a reflection of the complexity of the world we live in. "A complex world requires complex laws" sounds reasonable. And yet it is fundamentally mistaken.
When faced with increasing complexity we need regulation that firmly ensconces basic principles. And we need to build a system of law that can effectively apply these principles. Otherwise all we are doing is making a complex world more complex. Complexity has of course been in the interest of large corporations which employ armies of lawyers to exploit it (and often help create and maintain complexity through lobbying). Tax codes around the world are a great example of this process.
So what are the principles I believe need to become law in order for us to have more "informational freedom"?
A right to API access
A right to install software
A right to third party support and repair
In return manufacturers of hardware and providers of software can void warranty and refuse support when these rights are exercised. In other words: endusers proceed at their own risk.
Why not give corporations the freedom to offer products any which way they want to? After all nobody is forced to buy an iPhone and they could buy an Android instead. This is a perfectly fine argument for highly competitive markets. For example, it would not make sense to require restaurants to sell you just the ingredients instead of the finished meal (you can go and buy ingredients from a store separately any time and cook yourself). But Apple has massive market power as can easily be seen by its extraordinary profitability.
So yes regulation is needed. Simple clear rights for endusers, who can delegate these rights to third parties they trust. We deserve more freedom over our devices and over the software we interact with. Too much control in the hands of a few large corporations is bad for innovation and ultimately bad for democracy.

For brands: Seagate or Western Digital. Don’t drive yourself crazy like I did researching for days which is objectively “better” — they are both very solid and reliable brands, and the fact is that you can have a good or bad experience with either based on factors outside of anyone’s control. Hard drives fail — it’s a fact. There’s no way to permanently prevent this. Sooner or later your hardware will wear down, even from the best manufacturers, and all you can do is plan ahead of time for getting the longest life out of your drives by properly caring for them and have something planned to replace them when they inevitably fail. Hopefully after you’ve gotten some years of good use out of them first, but like I said there’s tons of factors.
For example, I ordered a 12 terabyte HDD from Seagate once for my server that was over $300 and it was dead on arrival. Wouldn’t work at all. But the warranty was for several years and customer service replaced it no problem and the 5+ other hard drives I’ve gotten from Seagate have been flawless. But sometimes, drives just die. You feel me?
But yeah, WD or Seagate. I’ve used both. Both are highly recommended
What kind: to keep things basic, you should consider either an HDD (hard disk drive) or SSD (solid state drive). For stuff you just want to back up and make sure it’s safe/you have copies, like videos and movies, pictures, music, documents, etc… you can go with an HDD. They are much cheaper, and ideal for storing files that aren’t accessed or modified frequently.
An SSD is going to be more expensive, and those are ideal for things like applications, games, your operating system….stuff that you interact with in real time, where loading time really matters and files can be being cached and changed and modified a ton within a short period of time. In this case, an SSD will feel significantly better and faster than an HDD

WE NO LONGER OWN MOST THINGS.
There was a time when everything you bought was very much legally your property to do with what you pleased, but as time (and especially streaming and technology) has marched on, the things that we pay for simply aren't ours anymore.
Sometimes, this takes the form of streaming: you don't own those movies, so when Netflix decides that that movie isn't getting enough engagement, goodbye, we mourn, and the site that once had an incredible selection across cinema history is now mostly full of original content and kind of OK films.
Other times, this looks like digitally distributed content, particularly things like video games. There have been several headline-making instances of Nintendo closing digital storefronts where people have bought games, and if they weren't on your consoles or in memory elsewhere when this happened, tough shit. That thing you paid for is no longer legally obtainable.
And finally, and truly to me, most heinously, we don't really own most of our electronics anymore, because the vast majority of manufacturers have made home-repair of their consumer good either impossible or immediately warranty-violating.
So yeah, dude, please stock up you dvd dungeon with physical media. In the next decade non-physical media is going to be in the same place that games preservation is right now, where the work that we (imo) are morally obligated to do as scholars of a medium is sat in a legal grey area or actively hounded by IP owners hemming and hawing about whether or not they can make money off of Max Bialystok's Adventure 3D: the Re-Release in 10 years.
