Winter Break Week 3

Once all nightmares were finished digitally I went to a local print shop to get them printed out in A3. The plan was to then bring the images onto tracing paper and from the tracing paper, with the help of carbon paper, to the lino boards. Then the cutting could begin.

While my experience with the print shop was pleasant (I paid £1.50 for it) an issue was just around the corner.

The lino boards I had bought from the UAL estore and collected before the break were just a thumb's width smaller than A3! I couldn't transfer onto them and changing the size of my designs etc. would have taken a lot of time. Instead I ordered 3 new lino boards, size A2 just to make sure they'd be big enough, online. They delivered within 2 days but it cost me another £30 for the lino alone + I couldn't continue working on the Nightmares for a little while.

At the same time that online store had a sale running and I ordered a set of lino cutting blades since I realized I only had 2 blades before that.

So really everything comes with pros and cons, really. In the end it worked out. And even in the moment, I had to laugh at what a weird, random issue it is for the lino boards to be just a LITTLE too small to fit the entire designs.

hii!! i really love your mountain goats patches, and i was wondering how you make them?

Hi! I'm so sorry this has taken me a little while to answer haha, I've been putting it off because I wanted to give a nice in-depth response.

My patches are all original designs that I make as linocuts and then print onto fabric! I use a Speedball lino carve tool that has several different carving tips, easy carve rubber blocks, and screenprinting ink, and I print onto regular cotton fabric. Screenprinting ink is thicker than the type of ink you're supposed to use for block printing, but I've found that I have to be pretty heavy-handed with the ink to get clean prints on fabric, and screenprinting ink has worked better for me in that regard (plus, it's technically machine wash safe as long as you heat set it).

I don't know if you're looking for specific technique advice, but here's some of what I've figured out after a year of making my patches:

I usually make my design digitally and then use tracing paper to transfer it. If you trace it onto tracing paper using pencil, you can then just flip your tracing paper pencil-side down onto your block and use a little bit of pressure to transfer the pencil markings. This process also simultaneously mirrors your design so that you carve it backwards and then it prints forwards.

Before transferring my design to the block, I like to do a wash with an alcohol ink on the carving surface, so that it's easier to see my carving.

I usually trace the larger details of the design with sharpie, but for the smaller details trying to trace them will often just mess up the lines, so I leave those in the transferred pencil and carve them first to avoid smudging the transferred lines.

I also carve my entire block using the smallest tip on my carving tool, which does take longer but I vastly prefer the really precise control that it gives me! After I have the entire design and an outline around it carved, I'll use a craft knife to cut off a big blank margin around the outside of the design.

For printing a batch of patches, because I typically do a lot at one time, I usually cut out all my fabric before starting to print. I ink the block a little bit heavily, but I keep a close eye on any excess ink around the edges of the design and clean the block off as needed. I don't have any fancy equipment for making prints, I pretty much just put a sheet of paper down on my work surface, put down a piece of fabric, press my block face down on the fabric and use a large book and some pressure on top of the block to make sure the print transfers well. It's taken a lot of practice to figure out how to get prints to turn out well and I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning!

This shows more or less my entire process; the design went through many iterations over the span of a couple weeks, but once I got it nailed down I did the entire rest of the process in one night - just the carving alone took about two hours. I prefer to write text physically not digitally, so the text in the digital version is basically just in the correct alignment so I can freehand over it on the physical copy. This being my most recent design (for now, I'm hoping to knock out a new one before next show in three weeks) is by a pretty big margin the most precise and detailed one I've done!

3: Almost nothing, sadly. I used to be in love with drawing dragons, but I don't think I've ever drawn one. I feel like by the time I wasn't drawing to get in an art school, dragons had become cringe/overdone/done by incredibly talented people all around, and I never returned to them. I did cary that love in writing though, and I have an original short story featuring lots of dragons and a couple wips that'll never go anywhere with different dragons.

Nothing else much carries from my childhood, besides the basic rules and techniques my mom (an art teacher) taught me.

7: ANY physical media. I'm almost exclusively working in digital at the moment. I appreciate everyone who doesn't have a control + z and still goes hog wild. I used to do a lot of eau forte and lino cut though and I miss that soooo much.

Final art book outcome and evaluation of unit > My overall evaluation of this unit is that I am proud of myself for pushing out of my comfort zone and trying something new, because making an art book and using traditional media to create a physical outcome is something I have not much tried on this course. However, I wanted to put more focus onto my book making and illustration skills applied to a meaningful concept, as this is the industry I am more likely to pursue after university. > I made sure to take on board the tutor’s feedback from the previous terms to include more research and develop my project earlier on by settling on my final idea sooner. This time I ensured that the outcome was more polished with more experimentation, which I think is what I managed to achieve. I am pleased with myself for going out and trying letterpress, which I have to admit I was hestitant at first because the process seemed complicated and daunting, however I found myself amazed by the method of printing letters in this way. Futhermore, I took frequent trips to the library to increase my knowledge on the topic. > The hardest part of this project for me was probably the fact that with digital work, I can simply redo it and have no repurcussions, whereas with physical pieces it is harder to hide mistakes, which are inevitable when doing lino printing on custom cut paper. However, I think the risk was worth it, as I can really see my skills and personality as a visual creative shine within this artbook, and the long process it took me to get here.

..........im starting to get addicted to lino cut i want to make a billion prints it's so fun. now that i figured out the solution to get great prints with the bear lino cut i can now move on to another one. i had a saw one in mind that i simply have to start working from a thumbnail i had a year back i already have the composition figured out. but. i wanna make a startrek one soooo bad......but i don't have an idea yet that slays enough to make a lino cut out of it aough....... almost tempted to simply take that spock portrait i really loved doing and even played around digitally with it but.... also want to have a great spirk idea i could do.........brain think please think think think,
