Digimon Adventure 2020 - Chapter 2

Minor spoilers:

Yamato calls everyone by their last name and Koushirou KOUSHIROU asks him to call him Koushirou even when in the first chapter it was Taichi who asked him that HE’S ALREADY GROWING I LOVE HIM

Koushirou speaks English.

Yes it’s all about Koushirou. I’m not even sorry.

DA: Episode 2 (Review)

If Episode 1 was all about (re)introducing Taichi, the digimon, and the Digital World, in the second one action precipitates at once. The series starts with a (literal) bang — a missile is about to hit Tokyo, and someone has to stop it. Taichi meets Yamato and they team up (with Koushirou’s support). Remember Koromon? He’s Omegamon now. 

The break-neck speed of these developments means things are happening now, and deeper stuff will probably come later. The structure of the episode is quite straightforward: it’s Our War Game, only everyone’s just met. Oddly enough, even though several important things happen in this episode, there isn’t a lot to summarize; it’s setting up the pieces for the next episode. But it’s pretty exciting to see something so major happen this soon.

(I’m curious to see how the story will develop: will Taichi and co. face a series of mini-crisis, or is this all part of a long-term arc?) 

This isn’t to say that characterization is suffering, here. On the contrary! Things are subtle, but you can already have a firm grasp of who Taichi and Koushirou are. Now they introduce Yamato, and with only a few words you already get the picture: he’s silent, he’s determined, he gets things done, and he works alone... until he realizes he’s stronger with Taichi. Little nuggets of dialogue / animation go a long way to provide characterization: the implication that Yamato isn’t from around here; Garurumon’s smile; Taichi’s eagerness to jump into battle; ”Izumi”, barks Yamato at Koushirou, who’s a bit surprised by being addressed that way. I like it. 

The relationships between the kids already looking promising, as well — it’s fun to see Yamato being slightly unnerved by Taichi’s eagerness and by how much Taichi seems to like him. Speaking of which, Taichi’s friendliness, admiration, and trust in others is very emphasized already. That’s a big part of his leadership skills. And Koushirou’s still adorable.

And more interesting stuff is slowly being teased. What’s the deal with Hikari, Takeru, and those weird feathers? Not only are they being introduced early, but the series seems to be framing both of them as the Magical Trump card. I’m already curious to see how they get involved, and their brothers’ reactions.

“:” has sent every evolution rule out the window, too, which is great. Without artificial limitations on how and when evolution happens, there’s a lot more room to try new things. Fans who like the Digimon/battle aspect will surely be pleased that battle tactics are an actual thing, now.

Overall, I’m impressed with how bold they are at throwing the old formula out the window and try something completely unexpected and different, while still giving us a recognizable feel. That’s how you approach a reeboot!

Weaker points: I know this is done by default, and it says nothing about how the characters will be handled later, but it’s a pity that 3 of the original protagonists are not going to be central in this series. In a way, saving Mimi, Jou, and Sora for later might be a good way to keep the story fresh. But I can’t help being disappointed with the lack of girls in this. If you want to capture a wider audience of kids, it might be a good idea to have one active female character by the third episode.

Also, good news! Turns out “:” IS available in Portugal after all! Thanks, Crunchy Roll. It’s nice to be included.

My “I am in denial” theory

So like the movie book and various promotional materials for the second Digimon Tri movie called who we thought was Ken “mysterious boy” or something of that nature....Well they are calling that heart breaker Gennai “mysterious man” in the Confessions booklet, maybe something similar will happen and it is not actually Gennai just some sort of shape shifter.  I bloody hope so.  I am generally ok because my favorite from the 01 group Izzy is getting a lot of focus, but I am shattered over the fact that, that was not Ken. He has been my favorite fictional character since I was 9.  Excuse me if I am taking this way harder than I should lol.  How this helps?  I don’t know, but I am just so angry that it was Gennai right now even a couple of days later.  >:(

Digimon Adventure: Ep 1 quick reaction

First of all, I’m thankful that simulcasting, and official translation has become the rule for Digimon series. It’s a lot more fun when everyone is watching the thing at once, and it’s excellent that international fans are able to support the franchise directly. Waiting for Kizuna’s international release hasn’t been fun, and on a time like this, it’s nice that Digimon can reach everyone, including new generations of kids stuck at home all around the world.

That being said, I don’t understand what they have against my country and not releasing it here, once again. Insane that in 2020, international markets are still so fragmented and geoblock is still common. I wish I didn’t have to resort to piracy and would gladly pay for Crunchy Roll Premium, even if I don’t watch anime. But I’m not going to bother to find a VPN or go through complicated detours to watch the show. Torrenting it is!

Episode 1 Quick Reaction

I’m glad they’re doing something completely different with the plot. There would not be any point in rehashing the same storyline. “Kids stranded on an island” is an amazing concept, but there isn’t much novelty they could do with it. Moreover, the original series showed that it’s not something you can continue indefinitely for sequels and spin-offs.

i’m also relieved with the fast pace of the plot. They have already introduced the main players, the concept of Digimon, evolution, the Digital World, Chosen Children, and saving the world. Consider how long Adventure takes to get do this! There’s no way a show made for today could deal with that snail-pace beginning. Even if it means sacrificing introducing the other kids, it’s a good decision.

The show looks colorful and well-animation and I was particularly impressed by the score (the OP and ED still feel a bit forgettable, but I’m sure they’ll grow on me).

From the beginning I predicted that this show would be more focused on action-adventure than on characters, and judging by this episode (and the very telling OP and ED), it seems clear that Taichi and Yamato will have centre stage. Koushirou’s fun characterization surprised me very much, so I have high hopes that his role won’t just be Mr. Exposition. It seems that Hikari and Takeru are already being set up to be the trump cards with their Angel Evolutions, and the other three barely register (it may be too soon to tell, but they seem to be framed as supporting characters).

Using the ED to characterise Yamato was very interesting. We already know everything we need to know about him, and the divorce background is here to stay. It looks like he’s going to be the Lone Ranger for quite a while, before joining the team, which can bring a new interesting dynamic for the character and his relationship with Taichi.

In fact, I get the impression that they’re going to build up the team slowly, which again is an interesting way of turning the original inside-out. The original kids were forced to work together from the start. What will happen when they have a choice in the matter? I’m curious to see how the relationships change based on this. The meet-cute between Taichi and Koushirou was promising.

I unabashedly enjoy all the Easter eggs, which are probably there for our sake more than the new, younger viewers. 

It looks like the Crests are being reshaped into something different and introduced from the start. They’re now called Stones and, interestingly, they seem to ascribe a role to each child. Koushirou is the Wiseman (the choice of translation was another curious surprise). I wonder how this will apply to the other characters, and how?

I enjoyed it well enough for a first episode, and it motivated me to check it out again next week. It still causes a weird feeling to see something that’s so different, yet so alike the original series! 

But I’m mostly intrigued with how the characters will react in a new scenario, and I’m curious to see if the series will manage to recapture some of the magic of the original. Knowing we’re not the target audience for this, and that this isn’t meant to compete and/or improve upon the original series makes me approach this with calm curiosity.
