Happy Birthday Yoma Gami!

Yoma is one of my oldest fandom characters, and probably the only old one i still sometimes draw. she's very, very special to me - Yoma was the protagonist of a fanfic i published titled Digimon Frontier 02: White Roses (you can still find it on ff.net). i never finished the fic but i always kept her in my hart.

Revisiting Lamnim-... Wait...

Redesigning Reflectmon was actually super fun, so I figured I'd give a go at Lamnimon too! The problem is my main issue with their old design was... I made them a shark? Because Discovery Channel was doing Shark Week when I was a teenager conceptualizing this character, and that's it. No other reason.

Now. On it's own, there is nothing wrong with the shark design. I like it a lot! It's cute, and sharks are awesome! The problem is this was supposed to be a pre-evolution to Ranamon. "Rana"... Means "Frog"...

Oops.

So obviously this digimon should have been a tadpole the whole time. I'm actually shocked they didn't use Otamamon for the Vitalbracelet line... However, the problem is the name "Lamnimon" comes directly from the scientific name for mackerel sharks. So unlike Reflectmon, who can keep their name because it still technically fits (Though I think nowadays I would have chosen the new name), Lamnimon doesn't really fit anymore.

Right now I'm calling this "Pollimon" based on an alternate spelling of "Pollywog" which is another name for a tadpole, and also because it's cute for the pirate theme I went with in the old DMFR fan-web-comic. However if I can find something closer to Lamnimon that fits, I'd maybe be swayed...

Anyway other than being a tadpole now, not much changed! Most of the original design was working. The other major changes are

Replaced swim cap with a hair tie (it looked weird with out the shark fin and was always a bit awkward to draw)

Softer, floppier, fin ears to better frame the face.

More... Fishy? Hands and feet.

More wavy hair style.

Some extra markings to streamline the design and add visual interest.

Again, very happy with this! It's fun seeing how my character design abilities have changed over the years.

I made a human spirit for Cherubimon, digimon frontier style.

And a little info blurb :)

"Smitemon is a jerster like Digimon that wanders the digital world, spreading judgment with her electric staff, raining down thunder on digimon she thinks are evil.

Smitemon is NOT an angel digimon, despite her holy appearance and sweet personality Smitemon has a short temper and will and tends to cast judgments on good digimon that made her mad.

When she is especially mad, Smitemon will switch to her 'Spiteful mode' blindly attacking any digimon nearby until calmed down."

I spent TOOOOO MUCH time on this stupid turnaround, so I didn't do the beast and hybrid spirits like I wanted to, maybe later.

Really indulgent practice. One part style experimentation, one part screenshot making, and one part forcing my digimon addiction into everything. Needs work, but I don't hate it.

Character reference art for an NPC in my Digimon RPG campaign. He's kind of a DMPC. Mostly just needed a fourth digi-destined who was could give some contrast to the other three quieter, more brooding boys. Anyway, here's Chandler, an ex-punk wrestler jock who just graduated high school and got whisked away to the Digital World.

Revisiting Flitmon!

Flitmon, conceptually, worked. A little pixie that turned into a fairy, that turned into a harpy/siren, that turned into... A personified jet plane??? (Oh JetSylphymon...) However I never really super nailed a design I liked? And I think a lot of that was my own inexperience, or feeling beholden to Fairymon's design, or just not knowing how to execute my ideas, ect.

It got better when I changed the character's outfit around 2016, but that was really more of a band-aid than a full fix. And I only did a band-aid because I was working on the comic at the time and didn't want to completely change the design suddenly. Even going as far as giving an in-story explanation for the outfit change.

Even then I could tell that the old design was too busy. The big pointy elf ears crowded with the butterfly head accessories, and clashed with the big round pixie wings that obscured the character's silhouette. I tried to tie things together better in the outfit change with butterfly motifs, but they ended up getting a little lost. This poor little pixie ended up being a clutter of shapes that only just almost worked and admittedly was kinda hard to draw because nothing quite flowed right.

The new look I focused on just getting all the elements working together. I ditched the elf ears for wing ears, gave her a wind-swept-pixie-cut, some little antennae to tie the head shape together, toned down the wings to something smaller and cuter with a more harmonious shape, and redid the outfit to something that pushes the concept a little more, improved the silhouette, and has better color harmony. (Also adjusted color harmony in general!)

I'm pretty happy with it! It's very cute, and oddly enough, feels like it fits as a Fairymon Pre-Evolution MORE than the very first one where I was trying wayyy too hard to make it a Fairymon Pre-Evo.

Manamon "The Manatie Monster"

A sea beast type digimon whose appearance is the true form of the Water Beast Digispirit after it was purified by the power of the Fire Digispirit. Manamon is a kind and playful digimon with a maternal attitude who likes to rest in lagoons and consume data from aquatic plants. When she feels threatened, she uses the thrusters on her back to attack using concentrated shots of water that could pierce even the most resistant armor. "Maritic pressure", she is also able to use these thrusters to increase her speed and ram her rival, hitting him with the resistant helmet of his head "Reef Ram"
