“Cool gals don’t look at explosions~
Even if they’re five feet away~”
“Who’s got time to watch an explosion?
Because cool gals have errands to walk to.”
“The more you ignore it, the cooler you look~“
“Cool Gals don’t look at explosions.
The Flames are hot but their heart is chilled.”
“Walk fast from the roaring explosion.
And don’t think about the people you’ve killed...”

Diggernaut has got to be one of the craziest bosses I've fought in a while

0m3g45n1p3r4lph4 replied to your post: I’m having a crisis as I’m trying to decide which...
boost is worse. Diggernaut has a cool theme, design and interesting patterns, despite being a pain. Boost Guardian is an ugly blob that hurts the soul
Thinking on it, I realized that everything that Diggernaut does is skill based. A vast majority of its attacks are very easily dodgeable once you have enough experience with the Space Jump. “Car wash” attack? Easy. Slamming its drill arms to create shockwaves? Easy! Dodging the lasers? Easy! The game might not actually explain that the Spider Ball negates its vacuum attack but once you learn that? Easy!
Whereas Diggernaut is a pure test of mechanical skill, the Bosot Guardian is an ugly black blob sent from hell to torment you with RNG. It’s possible to win purely out of skill but I don’t think most gamers can make ricochet angle calculations on the fly like that. On top of that, Diggernaut doesn’t damage you just for being near it, unlike Dark Aether’s bullshit atmosphere. I understand they couldn’t give you a light crystal because light heals you over time and automatically damages the Ing but Retro could have at least had the common decency to compromise and make it a Light Aether boss.

Found a screenshot of the Diggernaut from Metroid: Samus Returns and applied some color filters to it. I somehow made it scarier.

Real talk here: the Diggernaut may be one of the toughest bosses I’ve faced in a while. I know that comparing games to Dark Souls is a meme that’s been done to death, but how you go about fighting this thing is EXACTLY like a Souls boss: learn its attack patterns, learn the perfect opportunities to dodge and attack, and figure out its weak spots.
Sure, the boss is pretty easy once you get the hang of it, but until then, chances are you’re not going to win on your very first run. Diggernaut definitely puts your skills to the test.

The Diggernaut in Samus Returns can kiss my shiny metal ass. The difficulty spike when this mechanical asshole turns up has been the only real frustration Ive had with the game. The battles aren’t unfair, but they are annoying. I beat Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate using only Dual Blades and it wasn’t nearly as rage-inducing. Ugh.

Most of my issues with the Diggernaut boss fight in my first play-through were due to running into the boss fight at low health by accident (89 health last tank). Had to run all the way back for health after a few tries. My second play-through I had no difficulty, except for the final phase, which is just annoying.
I think the main issue for me was not knowing what to do. That stumped me, and I fell into many attacks because I was half-unsure of what to do and half-panicking because of that. I got the first half with the spider ball, but the second troubled me, especially before I knew the sticking-to-the-ground trick. I fought it again recently and honestly didn’t have too much trouble, though I still died to it once during the final phase.

Diggernaut never went rogue, it mistook samus for the chozo that killed its creators. Both have similar arm cannons, which the mining robot recognised. (samus returns and chozo memory spoilers)

The Diggernaut was ridiculously difficult. It only took me a few tries to defeat the Zeta and Omega Metroids the first time I fought them. But I was stuck on Diggernaut for hours. I've never struggled with a boss in a Metroid game so much before.
I was battling it late at night, ended up quitting for the night, next day I did a massive backtrack to every previous area to pick up every possible item so I was as ready as I could be. Still had trouble after that- it’s a real tricky boss to get the hang of! I have yet to beat it a second time so I wonder if it will be easier on the next attempt now I know what I’m doing? At least the feeling seems to be relatively common, loads of people struggled with Diggernaut.

swordintheswarm replied to your post “how do you beat the big angry robot's third phase? Do you really have...”
(Boss spoilers: You can also spiderball across the floor when it does the vacuum thing and you won't be sucked in!)
Posting to save a life, I had NO IDEA
#swordintheswarm#Reply#metroid#diggernaut#metroid: samus returns#metroid spoilers#i never even figured out to do that with the queen#spiderball truly is the most useful powerup in the game

God the diggernaught was panic inducing
WHY CHASE SCENES but at least it helps you to really hate the thing by the time you get to its (also panic inducing but slightly less so) battle. That makes the defeat all the more worthwhile.

how do you beat the big angry robot's third phase? Do you really have to feed it tiny little bombs for the entire duration?
BOSS SPOILERS!
When it does the vacuum-y thing, you have to drop bombs along the ground close enough that they don’t go off before getting sucked in, but you don’t get drawn in either. Once it’s damaged enough, it’ll come forward and you have to spiderball along its eye section, but be careful for the electricity (I think? Can’t remember 100%) which will damage you and knock you off. Spider ball around and drop bombs on the three glowing lights to finish it off. Each one will take multiple bombs, I found I could destroy 2 each time, maybe the third if you’re careful.
