The concept of Kier's """twin""" is so interesting when paralleled with Severance. Kier jerked off in the forest and was ashamed of it, so he made up a fake brother to blame the act on. Someone else to take the blame and get punished. It was him who jerked off, not me. He was the sinner, not me. So Dieter got punished, not Kier. The Innies really are just the Outies' punching bags to take the punishments, and bear the consequences of whatever their Outies do. Mark drinking all day and leaving Mark S to deal with the hangovers. Gabriella wanting kids, but leaving Gabby to bear the pregnancy and childbirth. Severed workers not wanting to work, so their Innies have to do it.

Thinking about Kier's "sickness" potentially being infertility in the context of the Dieter chapter and Helena's desire to prove herself useful to the company HEAR ME OUT--

You're Kier Eagan. You are impotent-- you can't bear children and so you cannot fulfill the expectations placed on you by your gender. You are not fully "a man." So you turn to the industrial sphere, maybe through working you can prove your masculinity, but if you don't have a family to provide for why are you working at all? Can you be depended on? You can't have kids which means you can't have a family, which means you have no one to provide for, which inhibits your ability to succeed in patriarchal, capitalistic industrial society. You can't have kids. But your BROTHER-- your twin, the you you are not, the better you-- he can. And what does he do? He suggests you live in the woods together, just the two of you. No family, no work. AND on top of that, he wastes his ability-- he "spills his lineage" in the woods. Or you, already incensed by his suggestion that you reject everything you've been working for, assault him. Either way your anger at his NOT-YOU ness and your own failure to fulfill your role both as a company leader and a man lead you to kill him.

Thinking about this wrt Helena-- Helena ALSO fails to perform gender like Kier, but because she's a woman. Lumon operates as this patriarchal "family company," and suddenly Helena's at the head in Kier's role. She can't succeed in the same way he does because of her gender. And she's got the same problem as Kier-- she cannot produce children. Like Kier used (or wanted/tried to) use Dieter, Helena uses Mark, and in doing so satisfies the requirements of the role she wants, which is this more masculine role. Does this make any sense or am I crazy. Either way I'm having fun

Severance theory time!

The Dieter National Forest is inside of Lumon, and whatever field activates the severance chips is present there.

If it were truly the outside world then Milchik would have needed to activate Helly R’s OTC protocol to enable her to exist as an innie; but instead he lifts something called the Glasgow Block. My hypothesis is that this refers to the Glasgow Coma Score, and it blocks the innie/keeps them in a coma, allowing the outtie to exist in severed spaces.

Because it’s inside Lumon the it could be perfectly stage managed. Both in terms of keeping the innies safe (Marks sister and Dylan’s family both would have not been happy if their loved one had died on a corporate retreat in extreme weather conditions) and in terms of the messages they were able to convey:

The outside is cold, it’s uncomfortable, you are hungry. Death is present. The most important thing for you to do is to follow the words of Kier Eagan. Lumon is warmth, light, food and companionship (and cosy Lumon-blue tents).

Don’t spill your lineage on the ground, it’s meant for your wife, and she will be Woeful and turn you into a forest as a punishment (I very much think Mark did not spill his lineage on the ground).

I will be so disappointed if we have to deal with a Helly/Helena pregnancy subplot. I know Severance is extremely well-written. I know that new life is already a constant theme — baby goats, Devon’s pregnancy, Mark and Gemma’s infertility, Gabby Arteta’s pregnancy, Alexa being a doula, Jame Eagan’s “revolving,” Dieter Eagan wanking it, etc. I know it’s a possibility… but I don’t want it!

1) the sex involved to produce said pregnancy was rape! Mark didn’t consent to Helena, and Helly wasn’t there to consent to Mark. This should have devastating fallout but a pregnancy from this would be especially cruel. 2) Helly/Helena are so much more interesting to me than that. It’s so rare that a show can take an established character and give her a pregnancy and it makes her more interesting; instead it usually flattens the previous characterization and I don’t want that for them. Look what happened to Dana Scully! I have a hard time trusting it would enrich the characters.

(Devon and Gabby Arteta, having been introduced as pregnant from the start, are actually protected from this issue as their characters can only expand and grow to involve other things. But so many characters when they get pregnant after having not been can suddenly only think about pregnancy, only talk about pregnancy, and lose all shreds of their former interesting characterization.)

I would allow it if a) Lumon tech means the embryo/fetus gets spirited away into a lab and bonkers things are done to it or b) there’s a miscarriage. Bonus points if Helly is relieved but Mark has reintegration flashbacks of Gemma and himself heartbroken when it happened to them.

Is it just me as a childfree woman who feels like this, or are people really raring at the bit for Helly/Helena to carry Mark’s child? 😬

something about the way irv sees the small woman who told kier that dieter deserved to die for jerking off in the woods right after he sees burt in his dream. like yeah it means helly is helena eagan since she's in her seat, but also the catholic guilt of it all. you should be punished for your desires. how can you desire a man who is with someone else. you should kill yourself actually. and he threatens to kill helena instead because helly would NEVER shame him for that. i'm gonna be sick.
