The line to Skegness played host to these archaic 'tumbler' signals, also known as 'somersault' signals, long after they had been abolished elsewhere on the network.
They survived until the mid 1990s, astonishingly. Our photographer here, Neville Stead, has composed a rural looking scene, with wooden fencing, trees and an older DMU train.

Sorry for taking so long to get a new upload out, been busy with IRL stuff over the last month. But I have some art in the works so there is stuff on the way, and some of them are not an illustration for Tales of the Tarmingham Overhead this time. But it is a stand alone drawing relating to Tarmingham, featuring one of the locations on the Overhead and is right in the centre of Tarmingham.
Here we see Danwood and Sanworth pulling into Tarmingham City Centre Station during the rush hour on a warm summers day in 2021 (the reason I choose to set the image around 2021 and not 24 is because I have a piece of lore about a war that starts in 22 that happens in the 29A timeline, and it has something to do with an AI Sentient Machine army. I'll be doing more lore relating to this event, and this war at a later date and when I release the official 29A timeline) while on their usual service to seaside town of Searonby. Tarmingham City Centre is as it's name implies is located in the centre of the city of Tarmingham serving it's main financial and shopping district and is a major interchange and junction on the Overhead with both the line to Ronston Quarter another major junction with lines from there branching off to Walaceton, Searonby, Greenham, and the south city line to band the line to Blburgh Oakland, and the station is where the western city line to Slaidon Marsh begins and is a starting point for the newest line on the Overhead the city circle line, and consists of four platforms.
Opening with the first section of the Overhead in 1864 as part of the line to Walaceton, albeit without delay after an incident that occurred at the station that became the railways first major accident, when a supplies train was driven by a bunch of rioting protesters from the southern part of the city at full speed off the end of the then under construction station with the engines boiler exploding upon impact with the ground, destroying and damaging several nearby buildings in the process with the engines boiler being sent flying thousands of feet into the air and landing inside the hull of a merchant freighter. The station opening as part of the section between GER's terminus at Tarmingham Piccadilly Street and the GE&SEJR's terminus at Ruston Quarter as part of the Overheads efforts to provide easy access to the docks and to allow the overhead to expand further to Walaceton. The station became a major junction for the Slaidon Marsh line after that lines opening in 1876 which allowed passengers to exchange between trains running on that line and the Walaceton line.
Since it's opening the station has gone through at least two redevelopments throughout it's life, with the first from 1971-1974 and the second from 2010-2015, with the bridge it was built on and the stairs leading up to the platforms being the renovated but others the only elements of the original station to remain standing, with the station being the busiest station the Overhead's network and the busiest in Tarmingham with it continuing to fill it's role as the city centres most important public transport hub with the station having since received a third line to serve that being the Circle line which opened in 2017.

The evolution of West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive liveries on trains. First there was the canary & blue livery applied to a class 312, then the two-tone blue applied to a class 122, then the Midline branding applied to class 310s, then the Centro livery applied to class 150s and 323s, and finally the Network West Midlands livery applied to some class 150s.

always fun (and a bit scary) when people i know on this site just breach their containment. like i’ve just seen one of your reblogs about angelfucking reposted on instagram randomly - it’s fun bc it’s like “oh look!! there’s VGA!! i know her!” but a bit scary because like… instagram is not your domain. the instagram comments section is a lawless wasteland that is not safe for person nor bot. don’t worry though, the comments were nice, and reading them i felt like i was blessed with higher knowledge of your connection to the machine
I've breached like 3 times (that others have shown me at least) and I guess I should be glad it's the kinda normal funny things and not...anyway yay people like my heretic posting :D

Saturday Movie Night: Current Affairs on the Midland (1980)
youtube
Does anyone remember last year, when I posted On Track For The Eighties, the thirteenth and final entry in BR's Rail Report series? Yeah, thought not, but one of the subjects covered in that film was a progress report on the St Pancras-Bedford suburban electrification scheme. Well, this film explores that scheme in greater detail - explaining why it was needed in the first place, what planning was required, and how the work was carried out while regular services had to continue around them.

I’ve done a lot of edits to my pinned post over time, but worth noting I added my reference list there, since I’m using it as a running list of sources.
Also added a bit about being happy to answer questions/clarify the context behind things I’ve written and give technical/historical advice. I’m not encyclopedic about trains but can probably point you in the right direction and I’m a manufacturing engineer irl so I have a decent conceptual knowledge of a lot of mechanical things/heavy machinery. I’m weird very familiar with converting/retrofitting heavy machinery and the economics of it, which is something I know this fandom LOVES. Ironically I’m pretty terrible with electrical stuff, I barely passed the basic circuits class I took in college.
(if you ever want writing advice on literally anything amusement ride/park related though, dear god that I’m hardcore into and have been for over a decade.)
#my job involves a ton of retrofitting and i’ve seen a lot of weird stuff at the train museum i worked at#i am mostly familiar with the janky stuff done to old diesel engines and passenger cars (you can get away with… a lot actually)#the tl;dr is it’s super common irl for stuff like rail equipment and similar durable heavy machinery to get repurposed multiple times#turning unpowered coaches into emus/vice versa and turning baggage cars into generator/circus/redneck open air coaches are blank checks#turning old engines/multi units into control cabs is a much creepier blank check (they get gutted and possess others basically lmao)

The Northlander
First off and totally unrelated to anything having to do with railroads is this: Northern Lights in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware! This photo was taken in front of our house. (admittedly a while ago) Why go to the far northern reaches of Norway or Canada when one can see this spectacle from the comfort of one’s home? This photograph, with its red and green hues, was taken with an iPhone. The naked…

Chester - 2023 vs 2024
1 year apart at Chester... It's not just the PEPs that have gone, but the TfW class 150s are doing the disappearing act as well, with some being listed for sale by ROMIC, the same firm behind the export of the class 43/Mk III HST sets to Mexico and Nigeria.
Like a lot of people I'll definitely miss the classic, rugged, utilitarian looks of a lot of these old British Rail built multiple units, but I have to admit there's been an incredible amount of thought put into passenger amenities on a lot of the newer regional, suburban, and local trains taking over services across the country.

Saturday Movie Night: The North Eastern Goes Forward (1962)
youtube
The North-East of England was the very cradle of railways as we know them, with the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. Almost a century-and-a-half later, it was BR's North Eastern Region who would similarly lead the way in keeping pace with the area's rapidly-changing social and industrial needs.
Among the developments covered in this film are the building of new marshalling yards, the improvement of passenger and freight facilities, and the design of modern aids to increase speed and safety on the track.
This version of the film was intended for screening within the area served by the region, and thus features narration by a (sadly uncredited) local actor - presumably an alternate commentary was recorded for screenings elsewhere in the country.

As much as I want to write Electra whump with them being accurately old and worn down, it’s not easy to find nitty gritty maintenance info on electric locos and my mind demands things be based in reality.
(Ironically I’ve worked on diesel locos and actually have a really good conceptual understanding of steam engines… it’s just my mechanical knowledge is VERY inversely correlated with which characters I’d want to write)
#might be able to swing something with traction motors#which i’ve worked on on diesel locos and would be conceptually kind of similar on electric ones#brush changing is the big thing i did that I remember well#lol absolute redneck moment of crawling underneath with no lift and prying the old ones out in multiple pieces with screwdrivers#it was a scrapyard condition engine and hilariously FILTHY under there#(lol part of why i roll my eyes at rusty is that engines in vastly worse condition of relatively common models can and do get restored)#As in “left at a mine outside for 10 years but the museum thought it could run and was willing to gamble $5k on it”#it’s also an increasingly hilarious comparison to used car prices. it’s a whole (decrepit) F-unit for less than my 2016 corolla
