Wildfire, Chapter One MV1
Fem aligned people may read but not f3tishize my work!!
Summary: Your very first Grand Prix!
Reader: Male
Warnings: Swearing, Max holds a grudge against you
Now playing: 'Break stuff' by Limp Bizkit
AN: First Chapter of Wildfire! This is a rewritten version, the early version was too short and sucked ass, so here you go babes!
(Here is the next chapter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Y/N L/N coming through the inside! This looks like P2 for the Redbull rookie! Don’t blink because you might just miss him!”
Loud cheering erupted from the watcher stands and colorful smoke hung in the air. Nobody really knew who you were since your addition to the team was announced barely a day before the quali.
“OH MY GOD, Y/N! YOU DID IT, YOU DID IT!”
Horners voice boomed through the team radio, the mechanics and engineer’s celebrations could be heard in the background. Tears pricked in the corners of your eyes; you couldn’t believe you placed so good at your first race in F1. You knew that you were talented, and you’d worked hard too, but your second place today was unexpected. Usually, it takes time to settle into F1, figuring out all the dynamics and such, so naturally you’d expect some more difficulties than this.
Once you’d hopped out of the car, you received many pats on your helmet. You were obsessed with the design that you’d chosen a few weeks ago; it was a beautiful reinterpretation of ‘starry night’ depicting a race car, watcher stands and track lights instead of a village.
You were grinning from ear to ear, proud of today’s accomplishment. Naturally, your teammate and racing legend Max had won the Grand Prix, but you were more than pleased with your work. The third place was achieved by your friend and fellow racer Lando Norris.
You took your place on the chair in the cooldown room, observing the replay of your drive carefully, still grinning. Lando punched your shoulder lightly. “Hey dude, good drive!”, he had a playful gleam in his eyes. “Next time i’ll get you tho.”, he smiled mischievously. “Keep on dreaming, I’ll crush everything in my way.” You patted him on the shoulder, making idle chit chat with your buddy.
Max stood at the other end of the room, watching the replay too. Your presence, your words, your attitude left a sour taste in his mouth. It’s not like you were mean or anything, but the way you present yourself seemed too cocky for a rookie. He’d never admit it, but having you around felt threatening. Like a lion, waiting for the Zebra to get distracted for a split second so it can rip it to shreds. But Max was always the lion? Why not now?
Many Formula 1 Fans were intrigued by you, the first impressions you left sure were lasting ones. “Fucking hell! Did this dick even get his fucking driver’s license?! Do I need to get him some glasses or will he be able to see the turn next time?” You were a strong fiery character, reminding many people of Max. Your overly confident nature was charming somehow and managed to pull in many fans, but it also earned you loads of judgmental stares and nasty comments on Instagram.
But you loved the attention. Your fire was only fueled more and more that way.
The ceremonial part of spraying fizzy alcohol and various festivities took its time, but eventually ended with you feeling sticky and gross, but happy.
Shortly after leaving the podium, you were circled by interviewers, fighting to be the first to speak with the wonder rookie’. A grey-haired man with an unknown accent gained your attention first. “Congratulations on your Success! You surely made a good first impression! Did you expect this outcome and furthermore, do you think someone else would’ve deserved the second place?” You blinked a few times at the blunt question but broke into a playful grin soon after. “To be honest, I couldn’t exactly weigh my chances because I’m new to all of the circumstances, but my success is definitely welcomed with open arms.” You looked intently at the camera that was shoved into your face, still smiling. “I deserve the second place, if anyone else felt like they deserved it, they should’ve tried to be faster than me.” The interviewer was flabbergasted at your retaliation and raised his eyebrows in shock. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m sweating terribly.” You turned towards the camera, pointing at it: “Lot’s of love to all of you watching, have a nice evening!”
And with that you rushed off, wanting to peel your race suit off as fast as possible.
Max stood nearby and had heard the whole interview while talking to his friend Charles Leclerc. He was equally as perplexed as the interviewer. How could you talk like that at your first Grand Prix? Cocky much.
Max couldn’t wait to crush your little rookie dreams.

Hello hellooo it’s your social psychological anon back with some takes because I have so much to say but am waiting till after the race but I, like most of the lesteppies, cannot get over the comments made at the post quali press con and had some very insistent thoughts that need to be aired immediately.
I am of course talking specifically about the comment from Max of “I always thought if I made it Charles would too”. This is an actual goldmine comment from Max because it really lets us have a glimpse and a clue into how Max thinking about Charles -apart from the obvious he is my rival and we hated each other as kids- and really beautifully contextualises their interactions (also explains further why Max is, for me atleast, such a standout factor in lestappen interactions). Because Charles says the opposite, that at the time F1 was so far away and he couldn’t even think about it and he didn’t have the same thoughts as Max. Keep in mind Max’s background, he was essentially conditioned for F1, to think that every other option is inadequate and that there can be no future except in F1. And in that future, he most likely factored in Charles as a given. When he thought about his future in F1 he thought about how he will fight Charles and when he thought about Charles he thought about them in F1 and I think that is absolutely insane and such an interesting window into how max has thought and continues to think about Charles. That quote about how Jos prophesied that they would be fighting even in F1 in the same way Max did the same, it is a natural conclusion that they would always be together and fighting because they were the standouts.
It makes me wonder then- pure speculation- that if Charles became synonymous with Max’s dream of a future at F1, how far Charles became a part of that dream and how far Max took on Charles’ success as his own as it contributed to the ultimate imagined future of Max fighting Charles in F1. It would certainly be in line with Max/Jos helping Charles once Max moved to F1 by recommending him (though this isn’t confirmed information so take this piece of lestappen lore with a pinch of salt) and Max essentially being rather unsatisfied that Charles’ team isn’t giving him a car that could allow them to fight. Their infamous 2019 Austria podium also where the differences between the two was seen where Max wanted to celebrate with him by turning towards him to spray champagne but Charles turned away and walked off rather angrily. In fact that entire season post-Austria you can see how Max is the one who is trying to interact with Charles and is looking for that approval and recognition from him, to have the reciprocity within recognising their joint achievement and how far they’ve come. I noticed it first with the flag-gate video where Max, geography extraordinaire, ✨forgets✨ what Monaco’s flag looks like. But even before that you can see max staring at Charles trying to think of ways to try and interact before he notices the flag and goes for it. (https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGeJ9yY74/ I first noticed it in this video so here it is, also the music is just fitting)
This also very much supports what I have previously said (https://www.tumblr.com/lestappenforever/733057722779664384/hello-hello-again-i-am-very-honoured-to-be-called) about Max’s insistence that they are rivals because he wants to have this relationship with him because it has been an integral part of his dream- in that way that you imagine scenarios of the future - Max doesn’t care about his rivalry with Lewis or Daniel or anyone else because it has to be Charles for that imagined future dream of them racing in F1 to come true- it has always been Charles and it always will be (que Charles verbatim saying that “he wants to beat me as much as I want to beat him and that’s how it is and always has been”)
This makes what Max says about them being here together hit so much harder because he first says he’s never been surprised that Charles is sitting here and then after a sentence reiterates again: “it’s not a surprise that we are sitting here together”. It’s not enough to say that he isn’t surprised Charles is here he has to go back and re-emphasis that it’s no surprise they are here together and re-frame the statement to put Charles and Max together. Again, I’ve said this before about performative relationships with those you regard highly and drawing a sense of intimacy from knowing that other people thinking about the two of them in conjunction with one another- in the minds of the outsider they exist as a duo and this is an impression that Max especially seems to want to cultivate (also seen during the interview where Max invites Charles because the interviewer literally says that he will ask Charles in a moment but Max will take the opportunity to bring them closer and that’s just 🤌).
Anyway, that’s all for the moment. Let’s collectively manifest on track action for our boys because they deserve it and maybe finally see a Charles pole to win conversion (as long as Max doesn’t try to dive bomb into him into turn 1 because that will defo be hectic for mid-field especially). ✨ 🫶

on ferrari politics, strategy and carlos sainz
Just a heads-up / disclaimer, i am a leclerc fan and therefore not unbiased. I did, however, come into the sport as a ferrari fan and tried to give Sainz his dues, and I still want him to, but- oh, well. We'll just get into it.
Ferrari, for a while, has actively suffered due to its own politics. Seb Vettel didn't seem to get on well in the atmosphere. They haven't been able to hold on for a championship since 2007.
There's a little bit of background I think is important for the current setup in ferrari:
Charles Leclerc was the last driver signed by the ex-TP, Arrivabene, and renewed by him also.
Carlos Sainz was the first (major) signing by Mattia Binotto, and was then propped by the management of the team through 2022, influencing car development in a negative direction.
After Silverstone 2022, Leclerc allegedly threatened to leave Ferrari. Binotto was fired and replaced with Fred Vasseur, who worked with Leclerc in his rookie season in F1 in Sauber. It's heavily speculated that this decision was made to please Leclerc and prevent him from leaving.
The 2022 and 2023 cars were influenced by Sainz's feedback predominantly, and his comfort.
Sainz has been beaten in teammate H2H by Hulkenberg, Leclerc and Verstappen. He looked good against a rookie Norris, which earnt him the Ferrari seat in 21.
In 2021, Sainz outscored Leclerc by five points. Leclerc had two dnfs to Sainz's zero, and lost probably about 40-50 points through no fault of his own. 2022, Ferrari started the year with the fastest car, and went backwards throughout because they refused to valorise their faster driver, who lead the championship by a fair distance after the first few races, picking up a grand slam in australia and winning by twenty seconds there, instead aiming to get Sainz "comfortable in the car" (Mekies' words). In 2023, from Carlos Sainz Sr's words, the car was developed in Sainz's direction, and every ferrari fan agrees the sf-23 was a shitbox. Still, Leclerc was the only driver to overtake Verstappen on equal stints (LV23) and picked up a ton of poles, outperforming his teammate and AGAIN losing out to bad luck with the trilogy of DNF, DNS, DSQ in a season. These weren't small points losses, either. all in all, he probably lost forty points alone in the second half of the season.
So, under Vasseur, the team is taking a different direction, being now firmly lead by Leclerc, who signed a contract extension of five+ years with the scuderia. Meanwhile, Sainz struggled to be offered more than a one-year deal, and there were rumours in the press about Ferrari wanting to bring in Albon, Norris in 2025/6. They very clearly wanted to keep that second seat open, regardless of Hamilton - his availability was just a bonus.
The narrative, somehow, has been twisted into Carlos' departure being comparable to Sebastian's: a betrayal. Carlos was offered an extension in 2023, and didn't sign it, and instead his camp decided to start talking about their Audi offers during the Monza 23 weekend, as a way to put pressure on surrounding contracts, and Ferrari basically turned around, and said: fine. Go if you want.
Sainz has had a full season to negotiate. He's not particularly a victim here, in my opinion. He's repeatedly, across the course of his four-year stint with Ferrari, ignored team orders in both quali and the race to serve his own interests, and lies in interviews after. Two recent instances that spring to mind are Bahrain 2024, where he implied to the press he had similar braking issues to Charles' (he didn't) and Barcelona 2024/ Austria 2024, where he went against his own TP to say he never agreed to saving his tyres after overtaking and making contact with his teammate, potentially costing Leclerc and the team a podium / a position.
There's a reason Sainz is leaving. If it weren't for Hamilton, it would be Albon, Norris, or someone else. The two drivers aren't a good fit. Vasseur said he had to calm them down every two GPs. Sainz's camp is reportedly incredibly toxic to be around, in general, and Ferrari is one of the only teams where somewhere in the contracts they can't prioritise upgrades to one driver. they're the only team to consistently bring upgrades to both cars, regardless of how urgent those upgrades are.
The team has been obsessed with giving Sainz and Leclerc equal status. Now its actively harming them. Leclerc has long been faster. In 2019 he outperformed a 4xWDC in the form of Seb Vettel at points. He won his first two races back-to-back. People who know both compare him to Verstappen. After firing Seb in 2020, it was expected Leclerc would lead the team moving forward, but Carlos came in and demanded equal status, and now there's a whole mess as a result. No other top team is this nice. RBR, McLaren, even Mercedes to some extent, make no pretenses about who they prioritise, and it helps them. There's team orders regularly. This doesn't happen at Ferrari, and even if it does, Sainz ignores them anyway. and this isn't just from this year. This is from 23, 22 ("stop inventing!" comes to mind).
Along with this, he lies (or is just delusional) to the media, about pace, damage, strategy. It's exhausting to keep up with. Then, when Leclerc hits back, he's labelled a poor sport (his comments about "that moment in his career" were so cheeky, but in my opinion, not uncalled for), and he also made a comment after imola quali, but it was in french, to canal+. Anyone who follows Leclerc knows these comments aren't out of nowhere, and he can bite back if he needs to.
The issue isn't teammates fighting each other. It's that there's long since been a power imbalance in this team and Ferrari has suffered as a result. And it looks like they're going to continue to suffer in the next few races.
(Just needed to get this off my chest. I think Sainz actually is a pretty decent driver, but his politics just. Rubs me the wrong way and I need him to sign a contract so everyone else can start to move. I'm sick of talking about him).

vro0m’s rewatch - 157/310
2015 British GP
And we're back again in Silverstone. I still only have the race available, and it's in low res so sorry for the gif quality. And so I now have it all in better quality so it's all fixed, let's see what the prerace build-up has in store for us.
Before quali, the race directors warned the drivers about the track limits. Guess how many drivers saw at least one of their times deleted for track limits violations? Eleven. Anyway it was, unsurprisingly, a Mercedes front row with Lewis on pole. Williams locked the second row, Massa ahead of Valtteri.
And Lewis talked about his pole lap with Brundle. He's ahead of "his nemesis mister Vettel" in terms of number of poles, Brundle says. Lewis says it's crazy then chuckles like what Brundle said just registered and says he can't believe it. He credits the team and the car. They talk about very specific things in very specific corners, I'm not gonna go into details.
Of course we get a Lewis segment, I mean it's the British gp. Johnny went to learn how to drift with him. They're laughing their asses off. They ended up in the gravel. Istg they're laughing so much they seem fucking high. Then it turns into an interview.
Tumblr media
Johnny asks why Lewis wasn't there for testing. He says he had health things he needed to get checked out and it was more important to him and also he doesn't feel like he gets a lot out of testing, but that's not why he didn't do it. His hair is a STRUGGLE jesus. It looks so dry. Johnny asks why the team has been so incredible. Lewis says it's been a year and half of dominance and such a special journey he's taken with this team. Collectively everyone is doing an amazing job. It's been his best year in terms of qualifying so far. Johnny says hopefully they fixed the clutch issue that fucked up his start in Austria. What about the track? He says he's been watching Nigel Mansel win at this track, and Johnny himself. Johnny says something about Nigel something one second a lap. Lewis repeats : "one second a lap?!" They're talking over each other I can't understand. "I don't know where he got that one second," Lewis says and they laugh. Then he says it's the best feeling when you win, when a Brit wins that race. It's hard to describe that feeling. Johnny describes the sea of flags. Lewis says British fans in general for whatever sport are so enthusiastic. He thinks Nigel is right and the fans do give you an extra boost. He says he doesn't know how much it's worth, maybe it's that second. They laugh again.
And we cut straight to his side track interview. Natalie asks how energised he is by the support he's getting here.
Tumblr media
He says it never gets old, they just went around the track and there's no blank area, the fans are everywhere. He hopes they can do it for them today. She asks if the pole felt sweeter because he had to work for it, it hasn't been the smoothest of weekends. He says he never wants anything done easily, he likes to do things the hard way.
Tumblr media
Nico was doing really good as well. But the weather is getting better, there's so many fans there, so many British flags and caps, "guys I appreciate it, I hope I can do it for you today!" Natalie says they have a girl right there who's turning 21 that day. Apparently he's her favourite driver. But she's busy talking with Jenson at the moment. How did she get the opportunity to be there in the first place, I don't know lol. He ducks around and goes to see the crowd. Natalie taps on her shoulder. "You've just missed Lewis." The girl turns around horrified. "Nooooo!" – "You've just missed him!" Natalie repeats. He's climbing the fence to the fans in the background. Waving. He jumps back down and walks back to Natalie. We don't see what happens with that one girl in the end.
On the way to the grid, Nasr's Sauber stops on the track. He can't seem to get it started again.
On F1's YouTube channel I've found a video of the drivers' fan meetings and a segment about Lewis so let's watch that!
On stage, Johnny asks Lewis if he's gonna do it this time, after his troubles in Austria. Lewis puts his hand in his pocket with a sigh and starts "you know…" but the crowd cheers so loudly he chuckles. "I can't believe how many people are here!" he says instead. Nico is expecting his first child btw, I didn't know that. He gets a lot of cheers too. A girl in the crowd asks Lewis who's his favourite team-mate. He says he doesn't think anyone has a favourite team-mate lol. "No one likes a team-mate. I'm kidding." Then he's off the stage throwing caps in the crowd. He signs autographs and says he's never seen so many British fans.
In his segment, Lewis is in Brackley talking about last year's championship. He says it feels like yesterday. Seeing the car he won with there brings back a lot of memories. "But it's strange cause the world never stops, it keeps going and you kinda have to move on so… So quickly to focusing on the next year, but it's an amazing feeling, 2 time world champion." He says at times his friends remind him, or they'll say he didn't drive too bad that weekend and he'll say "yeah well… I am world champion." He laughs. "And then they'd say 'no, TWO'" and it reminds him like that.
Tumblr media
They're looking at the 2014 trophy wall. The journalist asks if the trophies have come to mean something different to him over the years. He says they mean a "huge amount" to him. He says it's the end result of all that you go through with the engineers and the training and in your psyche and then the race itself. "And when you stand up there this is like the proudest moment." The journalist asks what trophy would catch his attention there in terms of races. He doesn't think long. "It probably would be…" and he put his finger on one of the glass doors. "Bahrain," the journalist says. "Bahrain," he repeats with a smile. He says he wasn't the quickest in the race and to be able to manoeuvre the way he did around Nico even though he was faster was the greatest feeling.
They walk to the W05 and he says it's probably his favourite car in his career." I actually just wanna take it home," he says. "But they would never allow that!" he adds with a chuckle. He explains that he had to adapt the ergonomics of the car when he arrived because what Nico had did not match his centre of gravity etc. "So when I moved that, it was interesting," he smiles again, "because then Nico followed. Same position and everything." He also says he does his moulding himself, the foam shaving etc, and doesn't let anyone else do it because he knows how he wants it. He enjoys doing it. Then the steering wheel is about simplicity. He says the engineers want to give them so much information and his job is to say what he needs and doesn't, what he'll try and test to decide if he needs it or not and then he decides how and where to put it on the steering wheel and how it appears on his screen. Nico's buttons aren't in the same order.
They talk about the last few laps in Abu Dhabi last year. The journalist says of course Nico had problems then but Massa was getting closer and closer. He asks what it was like for him. Lewis says Massa was never really a threat, he could answer to him. He says 2007 in China, he only had to finish 5th but wanted to win, and was racing to win. (Remember what happened? It was the penultimate race of the season and Lewis could win the title right there, as he said, by finishing 5th. It was a wet race. And halfway through, his tyres were gone from how much he was pushing, he was losing grip. He tried to pit but ended up in the gravel and couldn't get out anymore. It was a terrible DNF.) He says if he'd known what he knows now, he would have focused on winning the championship more than winning the race. Then in Abu Dhabi 2014, in these last three laps, he knew Nico wasn't in contention for the race win anymore and he knew he just had to bring the car home. The journalist asks if he was talking to the car. He hums. "Sometimes. Sometimes I've done that, yeah." But he can't remember if he did it in that race. But he's absolutely done that some times. "You kind of rub the tub 'come on we can do it, we can do it, we can make it'". He says there's a special bond between the driver and the car as the car keeps them safe and you work with it to achieve your goals. He says he'll miss that bond when he stops racing. Then they talk about the bond he has with the British fans and he says he truly believes the energy they send makes a real difference.
Tumblr media
Lewis reports poor grip out of his grid box. Worrying for the start.
And they're racing!
Oh my god what the absolute fuck? Massa takes the lead? And Valtteri takes P2? What happened to these Williams? No, Lewis maintains P2 but he's wheel to wheel with Bottas! Valtteri is indeed ahead!!! WHAT IS GOING ON. At the back Maldonado and Grosjean made contact and went wide. Jenson is trapped in the gravel and Lewis just overtook Valtteri for P2. Safety car out.
Jenson is out, Grosjean is out. Alonso pits. It's a bad one, they struggle to take his nose off. Maldonado has also stopped after all. That's 3 DNFs in one lap again. So both McLarens actually made contact which is the reason for both the stop and Jenson's DNF.
The safety car is coming in. Lewis is basically ON Massa’s rear tyres he's so close. He attacks but locks up. He goes wide, and Valtteri overtakes him again! He's now defending against Nico. After a few laps, Lewis finally sets the fastest lap. He's put Valtteri back in DRS range. It's on. Valtteri himself is only half a second behind his team-mate but then he's informed he's not allowed to race him for now. They say the same thing to Massa, adding that they have to pull away from the Mercedes together. That seems dangerous at the moment. We're told Valtteri is complaining that he has more pace and Ted agrees he's Williams' best chance. And just then, on lap 10, he attacks Massa.
So that's Massa, Valtteri right on him, Lewis 0.9 behind, Nico over a second further then Hulkenberg, Raikkonen, Kvyat, Seb, Perez and Sainz for P10. We hear Valtteri's engineer repeat he's not to attack and Valtteri says he has more pace, asks if he can overtake and says he can do it on the back straight. The answer comes shortly after : it has to be a "really clean move" and he has to pull away once in the lead. Valtteri doesn't let him repeat. "Copy." (It's hot, sorry not sorry, we love assertive Valtteri in this house.)
He can't make it on the next lap though, but both Williams are still faster than the Mercs. Interesting. Massa goes wide but still, Valtteri is behind. The Mercedes mechanics are readying themselves?! They go back in. Seb pits though. Daniel complains of a loss of power. Valtteri attacks again, he's so close! They need to let him through, come on. Lewis is called in.
It's lap 20. 2.4 stop! Great job! He's out in P4. Massa and Nico come in as a result. They're side by side in the exit! Massa stays ahead of him although Lewis is virtually in the lead. Valtteri pits. Lewis is in the actual lead and Nico attacks Valtteri for P3, Valtteri stays ahead! The crowd is going wild for Lewis. Daniel retires his car. Now both Williams are told it's a race to the end including against each other. They're announcing possible rain before the end of the race and indeed dark clouds are gathering. Oh we also lost Verstappen at some point? Okay.
On lap 30, then, Lewis is 5 seconds in the lead ahead of Massa, Valtteri is 1.4 seconds behind him, and Nico 0.6 seconds further down. Behind them it's now Raikkonen, Seb, Kvyat, Hulkenberg, Sainz and Perez. The rain should hit in 20 minutes and be an actual downfall. That might change things. Nico is told to give it everything. Yellow flags, Sainz slows down. That's the second Toro Rosso probably DNFing, yep. He's stopped. Virtual Safety Car. Here we go again.
And it starts raining.
Lewis : "So far it has stopped." Bono : "Nobody's stopped yet." Lewis : "No : the rain has stopped." But he might just be in a different part of the track because the Williams are struggling now and Valtteri goes wide while Nico closes on him but Nico goes wide as well! The Mercedes mechanics are getting prepared. Valtteri calls for a pit for the second time but his engineer maintains the rest of the track is dry and it has stopped raining. Seb overtakes Raikkonen for P6. Raikkonen pits. Nico overtakes Valtteri. Ted says if you believe the radar the shower has indeed passed and Bono says so as well to Lewis, who just went wide. He adds the next one should be 5 minutes away and light.
It's lap 40 and Lewis is 5.5 seconds ahead of Massa, himself 3 seconds ahead of Nico. Valtteri is of course P4, Seb P5, Kvyat P6, Hulkenberg P7, Raikkonen now P8, Perez P9 and Ericsson is currently P10. Nico is closing on Massa very quickly or rather Massa is losing a lot of time. Nico overtakes him. And very quickly Lewis is losing insane amounts of time as well, as he says it started raining again, and Nico is reducing that gap very very quickly. And by that I mean 2 seconds a lap. LEWIS PITS fuck he says he has no grip! It's raining harder and he gets the inters, Seb does as well, is it the right decision? Nico wants to come in as well now. There's umbrellas in the crowd. It's a 3.4 stop for Nico and Williams are stacking their cars, Valtteri is gonna lose out in the process. No! He actually did not have to wait at all! His stop was even quicker than Massa's!
Anyway, that's Lewis back in the lead 8.7 ahead of Nico, ahead of Seb! 5 laps to go. Nico is losing time on Lewis. Yellow flags, it's a Marussia going off and joining back without a front wing. Raikkonen has to stop again because he put the inters too early.
It's the end of the race!
And Lewis WINS! Again! Ahead of Nico and Seb!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Niki says nobody can complain anymore after such an incredible race (remember at the time there's a lot of talk about F1 being boring). Ted asks who decided to pit Lewis right at the time he did because it was absolutely perfect timing. He doesn't really answer, he just says thank god. Lewis does a donut lol.
In the cool down room, he's out of breath. He woos as he sets down his helmet. "The rain came…" he says. And he sighs. Nico is sipping water in a chair, Seb comes to shake his hand. (sorry for the gifs glitching, that’s from the video, nothing I can do.)
Tumblr media
Then Lewis walks to Nico to shake his. "Good job !" he says.
OH MY GOD IT'S BONOOOO YESSS Lewis finally turns around and sees him as Bono tells him something that I can't make out ("it was a lot harder than it should be, innit?" I think) . "Aww dude!" Lewis exclaims as he goes straight in for a hug with much pats on the back.
Tumblr media
"So happy you're here man." – "That was brilliant," says Bono. Lewis goes back to his hair. Nico talks to Seb in German so Lewis goes back to Bono.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lewis thanks his fans. He says he was gunning the whole way and he really wanted to do it for them. He's thankful for the support, he could see them through the corner of his eye every lap. The interviewer asks him about the start. He thinks it was due to poor grip, but it made the race even more exciting for the fans. He says for the first time in his career he made the perfect decision with his pit stop.
Tumblr media
Then after the two others' interviews, he's asked if he has a message for the fans who came to see him. He says "hum… My Mom's down here!" and the interviewer waves his hand "hi mom!"
Tumblr media
He says he's elated, "you can't imagine how happy I am." He says he started tearing up on his last lap. "Really hoping that I could hold on to it for you guys." He says he felt them all the way. He finishes by saying he'll keep pushing for the championship and "thank you so much for all the support, now let's party!"
Postrace, Valtteri said he was sure he could have pulled away if he was in front, but he also said that "no one should let anyone by. That's not racing, but it would have been nice to have been able to race when I had the best opportunities."
There was a minor controversy surrounding the moment the merc mechanics came out to the pits and then back in, which Toto admitted was "a bit of a game", because according to sporting regs, the mechanics are only allowed in the pit lane for pit stops. In the midst of it there was a text from Susie Wolff to her husband apparently saying "you guys think you can fool us, ha, ha, ha." Anyway nothing came out of it but some fans were calling for a penalty on twitter or something.
Lewis showed up in the media pen with the trophy.
Tumblr media
His name is not etched on it yet. He's buzzing. He says it was one of the trickiest races he's had for a long time but it was fantastic. He says it's fortunate it was a difficult start for the both of them and not just him. He was eager to get Massa at the restart but went deep. He couldn't overtake those guys. Great pit stop. And then it rained. "I was like 'oh my god'" he groans with a smile.
Tumblr media
He says it's difficult because when you're the first car you're the first to test everything out, to feel out what the track's doing. But he kept seeing the crowd from the corner of his eye and didn't wanna drop it for them. And then he came in for the wets just at the right time. (He's beaming, that one decision was really something. He looks so utterly satisfied with himself hehe.) "When I came out though I'm thinking 'I HOPE that it does rain'" he says with a chuckle.
Tumblr media
He sighs. He says those last laps, especially the final one, he felt really emotional. Just hoping he could keep on the track for everyone. Natalie asks if the perfectly timed pit stop was genius or luck. He says there's nothing genius about it and he also doesn't think it was luck. He says you can just see as you go how much is raining and what parts of the circuit are getting wet and he had info from the engineers. He says it was just "for once" the right call. Sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong. She asks if he was surprised by the Williams' start and their straight line speed. He says not the straight line speed, they've always had that. He says the Mercedes had a lot of wheelspin yesterday already, although his clutch actually performed really well, it was a grip problem. They'll analyse it to see what that was but, he smiles, he's happy with the clutch that he chose and will use it in the next race.
Tumblr media
She says interestingly he and the team said the Ferraris and Williams wouldn't be a threat today but it looked like at one point they might have been. He says with the Williams, it's a medium and high speed circuit and you can't follow. But he got close anyway and then he says something about traffic when he got out of the pits. She asks for a final word on the fans. They've been the best this weekend as they are every year. He does honestly believe they have the best fans in the world here, whatever the sport is. The energy was electric.
Okay so now that I've watched the full broadcast I'm unsure where that was from because I didn't see it in it, maybe it was post quali idk but here's something I found before I had access to the full broadcast :
I've found the post race interviews but the quality's too poor to make gifs. Ted says it's difficult to stay focused and do what he's supposed to do and stay focused on what everyone wants aka for him to win the race. Lewis says he thinks what's important is to focus on what you want rather than what everyone else wants. So he does his own thing and of course his goal is to win the championship but that doesn't mean he can't do anything else outside F1 and he thinks it's strange how some people feel like that's the way it is. He says he's not doing anything particularly different this year compared to the previous years although he might be more visible this year. "I would say I'm enjoying myself more this year." Ted says he didn't ask about him doing other things. He asks if he's read thing about that. Lewis answers something but the mic isn't with him so I don't hear. He says something about Ted talking about focus and doing other things this weekend, "are you not?". Ted is genuinely baffled. "No, no," he says in a higher pitched voice. "I was just asking… I don't know, were you talking about people asking you about where, why…" Lewis is talking again but I can't hear. It's weird and confusing. I didn't understand Ted’s question at the start either, I thought I'd miss some of it. Lewis says he thought he meant about how he balanced his life with racing. Ted says again "no, no" and finally clarifies he meant how he balances the demands at his home grand prix. Lewis throws his head back "ooohhh…", smiles, looks at someone on the side and laughs. Ted goes on saying he doesn't get the same attention here than, say, in Malaysia. I see Lewis mouth "of course" and he gives him the mic. "I don't feel any particular demands here," he says. "I just feel it's, like a super positive weekend. This is the weekend where you know you're gonna have– it's gonna be like 130'000 people here, it's probably gonna be more over the weekend and you know that a good portion of them, a large portion of them, are there for the Brits. I want, you know, myself and Jenson and the guys to go out there and do the best that we can and at least one of us come out with a, you know, with the nation's flag at the top next to P1. So that's, you know– there's no real negative, there's no negative at all coming here. Naturally there's pressure within yourself because you want to do way better than perhaps you do in other places." Ted says he wanna go back to what he was saying earlier about doing other things than F1. I understand that he apparently missed a testing day or something. Ted asks if there was a reason why he asked to be excused from it. Mmh. Dangerous territory. Lewis tilts his head, adjusts his sunglasses, answers immediately. "You know I had– I had some doctor uh, some doctor checkups that I had erm, which I felt was more valuable– actually, actually it was, it was more valuable for me to get done and so that's why I chose not to do the test." Ted pushes his luck : "did it matter that Nico got track time instead?" Lewis answers : "Erm… I don't personally feel so."
We cut back to the broadcast and Ted says "that was slightly awkward with Lewis Hamilton wasn't it? I think he thought I was asking a different question but he obviously is defensive. He was with Pharrell Williams the first day of the Austrian test, he put that on social media so he is gonna get asked when he makes on twitter things public." He's saying all that to Craig Slater, who says Paddy Lowe has been asked a couple of times about Lewis’ whereabouts and had to make excuses for him, "and try and explain, maybe without revealing the truth, why he wasn't there." He also points out that him then having apparently a medical issue is interesting.
Ohhhh Carmen is in the team photo 🥺🥰
Tumblr media
Look at her talking with Bono 🥺
Tumblr media
🥺🥺🥺
Lewis is swamped by the journalists and cameras but climbs the barriers either way to salute the fans. They're ROARING.
And Lewis is finally back for one last interview with them. He jokes with Johnny that he was driving better today than the other day when they were together. They laugh. He says that drifting experience definitely made a difference for him today. The crowd behind him is chanting his name. He says he loves racing and when the guys passed him at the start he was actually excited for a "natural race". They joke some more about the drifting.
Tumblr media
He's asked to talk about the start and he's interrupted by how loud the crowd is being. He chuckles and he explains the whole wheelspin thing again but behind him they're still chanting and they cheer every time he briefly turns around to smile at them.
Tumblr media
Johnny asks about the rain and the pit stop call. He confirms it was his call. He says he was trying to stay out as long as he could but he could see more and more droplets. He says he doesn't know if the people at home know, when you're driving through the rain it looks like it's pouring but in some places it's not. And then in other places it's worse and when you get there you start aquaplaning and it's scary, he says with the usual huge grin he has for scary things. It was getting slippery so that's when he made the call. Simon says they drew straws for who was gonna interview him because both Johnny and Hill have their names on the trophy. He says only 2 other Brits apart from him have their names on it three times : Jim Clark and Nigel Mansel. Does it mean a great deal to him? It does, being a part of British history and of this race's history. He turns around to talk about the fans. "We got the best fans here, man, it's crazy." The trophy holds so much history (it's one they can't keep btw, they have one they can take home but this one stays there) he knows that way after his time they're gonna be a part of it, he says to Johnny who's holding it. He says having the Hamilton name on it, he's proud of what he and his family achieved to be up there with it. Simon says he has to chase down Jim Clark's five wins, that's the next target, then he asks what he's gonna do tonight. He says he's gonna stay there for a few days but he doesn't have anything planned for tonight. "I'm gonna have a good meal that's for sure um… I'll have some sweets, and I might have a drink tonight." Johnny hands the trophy over, and Lewis walks to the barriers and climbs up to lift it up over his head for the crowd.

Tumblr media
about the race: sooo i kinda watched it. sorta. you see it was at 6pm during dinner (i am so fucking dutch 🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱💥💥💥) and because i wasn't a crazy autistic fan (/pos) about this beautiful sport yet... i didn't watch it but i did follow it on my phone!! and we had it on in the background. my best friend was also there for dinner and i remember forcing her to watch the final laps with me 💀💀💀 looking back yeah maybe i was already autistic here. who woulve guessed 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 and i was very proud of max 🥹🥹 that never changes the entire season... whoah... i was very invested in max making all those places and i liked fernando cb too a lot :o) still do!!
it was so nice because my brother kept sharing stuff about f1 and i ate it all up jfhgfdjghdfjg... reminded me of when he tried to get me into f1 in 2020 by showing me kimi videos and i just. didnt care (im sorry kimi bae idk what was wrong with me) 🥰🥰🥰 and my dad kept laughing at me being so interested in f1 bc obviously worst leftist sport ever 😭😭😭 never in my LIFE did i show interest in a sport before. fucking hilarious lmfao

F1 Re-Watch 2022: Round 13 - Hungary
Alrighty, here we go again. I think I’m halfway through the season now? (as in, the races that had Seb, soz Bahrain & Saudi). Anyway, I don’t remember much from this race bc I was still reeling from Seb’s retirement but I’m pretty sure Verstappen won so... woo
(Please let there be Seb and Bono sightings to make up for it 🤞)
I’ve actually had to mute the replay when the intro’s on bc I’ve heard it so much at this point 😭 Like the F1 theme is fine, it’s just not The Chain
I am obviously still watching the intro, bc Seb looks pretty in it
I’m sorry what... GEORGE IS ON POLE???
????????
how tf did he drag the W13 into pole????
ugh Seb in P18 whyyyyyyy 😭
Red Bull’s in 10th and 11th?????? What happened during Quali?????
Right hopefully I’ll process all that before the start
oh god there’s raindrops on the cameras.
Starting this at quarter to eleven at night is looking like A Mistake™️
[Formation Lap]: And the RBRs are going off the grid like snails because????
Oh they’re running new power units. Should mean that they should be running like snails, but anyway
TEEEEEEEEEEED (Yes, I watch all the replays on F1 TV in the International feed for Ted crumbs)
[Start/Lap 1]: Russell gets a surprisingly good start considering how long he was sat on the grid while the tail end cars lined up.
The Ferraris are looking zoomy though
rip Albon’s front wing endplate
[Lap 2]: and a wild VSC appears
oof debris all over turns 2/3. lads.
Lewis jumping both Alpine’s at the start?? iconique
[Lap 3]: aaaaand we’re green
Seb up into P16!!!! I’ll take it!!!
So, how are Ferrari going to mess up having P2 and P3 then???
It is a very sorry state of affairs that I’m just expecting Ferrari to mess up, but alas. Clowneria Ferrari reigns supreme.
[Lap 4]: idk if I want to call it racing but, the cars all seem to be following each other pretty well, but idk if anything is going to come from it. But it makes a change from all the massive gaps between the cars in France
[Lap 5]: and as I say that, Verstappen passes Alonso
...I’m just going to acknowledge Fernando asking for team orders and move on
[Lap 6]: Why did we cut from Kevin v Dan to Perez v Alonso???? I want my midfield spice!!!
I mean I know Alpine are a midfield team, but whatever
[Lap 7]: “Dry for the next half hour” idk if I want to trust that Mr Engineer
Meanwhile the Red Bulls are carving their way past the Alpines.
SEB INTO P15!!!! Hanging onto every single crumb I can
[Lap 8]: Bold of Crofty to assume Ferrari are going to be smart with their strategy to even think of trying a one stop. That’ll only happen if they just forget about Charles and Sainz
[Lap 10]: Lewis catching Lando 👀
ayyyyy Lewis has a rainbow helmet!!!!! 🌈✨
brief disgruntled Toto sighting. I feel you bud I don’t want to endure Lewis v Verstappen either 😭
Euros Crofty. The Lionessesses were competing in the final of the Euros. smh.
Anyway F1.
[Lap 11]: Norris v Lewis v Verstappen. I am unwell and not in a good way.
[Lap 12]: Yeahhhhh Lewis into P4 on the inside of turn 1. noice.
Seb watch: up into P14!!!
[Lap 14]: Now Charles hinting for team orders. Chaos children.
Cut to the Ferrari pitwall, I’m surprised they didn’t start playing clown music.
(Sorry to any Tifosi I assure you it’s coming from a place of utter disappointment)
[Lap 15]: oh god incoming Ferrari on Ferrari violence I don’t want
anyway people are starting to make their stops, Seb included, he’s out in P17.
Oh and so does Russell and Verstappen.
[Lap 17]: everybody do the pit stop shuffle!! *70s Disco music plays in the background*
[Lap 19]: cut to some focused Merc engineers
Hello Mr Merc mechanic 👋
[Lap 20]: I can only assume we’re already on Lap 20 bc the Hungaroring is so short bc the race is starting to drag a little bit.
[Lap 21]: “What do you do if you’re Ferrari?” I know Crofty was asking about strategy, but we do not have enough laps remaining to properly answer that question.
The RBR pitwall being immensely unbothered about Leclerc’s stop really sums up the 2022 season in a nutshell 😭
[Lap 22]: anyway, Seb watch: back into P14 after the pitstop shuffle!!!
[Lap 23]: oh jeez not live chat from the Ferrari pitwall. idk if I’m strong enough.
wsfuhaeuh nvm the connection either went or he’s just not answering.
[Lap 24]: oh not Dan picking his way past the Alpine squabble dvuhedsauh king shit
oh yes please replay that it was so funny
[Lap 25]: ah we are hearing from Binotto on the pitwall
SEB SIGHTING!!!!!
It was two seconds of the Number 5 Aston but I’m taking it with both hands
[Lap 27]: Leclerc into Russell’s DRS range 👀
oh god first mention of Seb’s retirement fuck off Crofty 😭😭😭😭😭😭
[Lap 28]: ohhhhhh Charles trying the outside of turn 2 on Russell
(Seb watch: P12 BABY!!!!!)
[Lap 29]: don’t cut to the pitwall show me the cars!!
(yes that even includes stressed Toto, there is stuff! happening! on! track!!!!)
[Lap 30]: ahhh so nearly on the inside of turn 2 and the outside of turn 4. Charles please think of my nerves.
This is fun to watch though
[Lap 31]: CHARLES GOES ROUND THE OUTSIDE OF TURN 1!!!!!
Yeah. That was hot. sorry not sorry.
and SEB PASSES ALONSO FOR P11!!!!!!
ugh down the inside of turn 1. NICE.
[Lap 32]: Ah. so much F1 tech, but sometimes you just gotta stick your hand out into the air and see if it’s wet or not. A Serious Sport™️
“It shouldn’t get any worse, famous last words” I find it so funny that commentators are aware of the Commentator’s Curse.
[Lap 35]: Half distance klaxon!!
I’m nether underwhelmed, overwhelmed, or even whelmed. It’s... a race I guess???
Seb onboard as he chases Esteban. And goes wide. It’s okay Seb I still adore you.
Livery watch: Aston Martin preeeeeeeetty 😍👌
[Lap 37]: So apparently the hard tyres aren’t working. Watch Ferrari use them at their second stop.
[Lap 38]: Oh no. There’s more raindrops on the cameras.
SEB PASSES OCON FOR P10!!!!!! 😭🙌
If I had a penny everytime Seb passed an Alpine on the inside of turn 1, I’d have two pennies. AND I LOVE IT.
[Lap 40]: Oh no Ferrari did pit Charles onto the hards I DIDN’T WANT TO BE RIGHT 😭
circus music
[Lap 41]: So Verstappen goes from P10 to P1 thanks to a combo of strategy, and OP car, and Ferrari clowning. Sounds about right.
oh. he spun.
[Lap 43]: Considering how pissed Charles was at his tyres, I don’t think he’s suddenly back in the race Crofty.
(I miss Alex Jacques comms SO MUCH. The things I do for Ted).
[Lap 45]: Well, the battle was tasty while it lasted.
Don’t hurt yourself trying to understand Ferrari’s clownery Crofty. Just call them fools and move on.
[Lap 46]: Lewis catching Sainz 👀
[Lap 47]: ahhhh AM doing the double stack
Pitstop shuffle 2 electric boogaloo! *80′s synth blares in the background*
Nooooo not Dan on Lance violence 😭 BOYS
[Lap 50]: Lance passes Dan and Seb passes Zhou. My lads!!! 💚
Team Green here to make passes into turn 1 and look gorgeous while doing so.
[Lap 51]: George catching Charles like it’s almost nothing. I will be taking a sledgehammer to those hard tyres.
And Seb passed Dan into turn one for P12. niiiiice
[Lap 54]: And George goes round the outside of turn 1 to take P2.
They’re pitting Charles again. 🥲
I once again support Charles rights to burn shit down.
[Lap 55]: Bono I love you but please don’t mention anything about light rain I don’t want to hear it.
Yes, it would make the race spicy, but it would also make me stressed and it’s 25 to 1 in the morning as I watch this.
[Lap 57]: Lewis fastest lap!!! we love to see it!!!
oh yes please let’s manifest another Merc double podium. George and Lewis dragging the W13 kicking and screaming as they should.
[Lap 59]: oh not Mattia leaving the pitwall and walking to the back of the Ferrari garage. I think he figured out he just lost his job.
[Lap 60]: Nooo this was Bernie Collins’ last race with Aston?! We’ll miss you queen!!!
[Lap 62]: Binotto watch: He’s back on the pitwall. Maybe he just needed a cathartic yell at the back of the garage.
oh yeah Lewis v Sainz let’s go!!!
[Lap 63]: And he makes the move down the main straight. NICE.
Angela’s proud happy clapping is a mood.
Oh Lance takes Bottas on the outside of turn 1??? NICE
oh fuck not Seb on Lance violence for P10 again. HELP.
[Lap 64]: Merc on Merc violence happening behind AM on AM violence. I’m not strong enough.
Oh Lewis with the switcheroo 👌
cut to the Astons, please play nice fellas.
[Lap 67]: SEB INTO P10 EVERYBODY MOVE
THAT’S MY BOYYYYYYYYYY 😭🙌💚
And Lewis on track for his 5th podium in a row. That’s my Kings!!!!
[Lap 68]: Oh no Bottas’ Alfa went poof.
[Lap 69]: Poor Charles’ suddenly worrying about his car. Lad’s gone from championship leader to being traumatised by reliability.
IT’S RAINING?!
FUCK
screaming crying etc
[Lap70/Finish]: DRS disabled so it’s actually raining raining
*distressed yelling*
all while Seb’s chasing down Ocon.
LEWIS P2!!!!!!! SEB P18 TO P10, THAT’S MY BOYS 🖤💚
And fastest lap 👌
And he takes the record for most laps led a circuit. Legend behaviour.
Well... idk how I feel about that race tbh. There was some really good bits and kinda dull bits. The battles we had were good, but it again felt more of a strategy race than anything else. So a solid 6 front wings out of 10. Next race: Belgium!

How did Nico ruin the friendship and why is he always thinking about Lewis? Thanks
hello anon! welcome to the sunshine and britney club <3 (respectively lewis and nico - nico is called britney since mark webber did in 2006 lmao)
read at the risk of obsessing over two idiots who can't communicate </3
the beginning
nico and lewis have been friends since they were kids. they started karting together and were a team.
Tumblr media
they always had always a strong bond animated by competition, but it was always a fun rivalry between two best friends
(lewis comes from a working class background while nico’s father is formula 1 wdc keke rosberg so he was raised in a rich environment - lewis used to convince nico to buy him sweets all the time lmao)
nico and his dad always had lewis’s back back then helping him when his kart was broken and adjusting settings on his kart for him when lewis broke his wrist (and still went to win the race starting from 8th wearing a cast) - and they even went on holiday together in greece one summer
what happened in greece? we may never know (unless that 6 hour brocedes podcast happens sometime in the future - who knows)
but just the fact they went on summer holidays together at 14 tells you just how close they were
“Fifteen year ago Lewis and I were on holiday in Greece, saying 'imagine if one day we fought for the F1 championship in the best team against each other' - and now we are doing it. That's incredible!”
nico always likes to mention it for some reason
karting years
Tumblr media
people who knew them from back then always point out how close they were
they’d have a competition even when eating pizza at the restaurant
"As a kid, I didn't like pizza, but I remember often going out for dinner with Lewis and Nico, they would even have races to eat pizza, always eating two at a time” - from robert kubica who used to race against them - “There was always competition. They always wanted to win, to beat each other. But they didn't fight. It was friendly competition. There was always laughing afterwards.”
from dino chiesa, their karting boss "Many times I was called by reception about some problem in the room. It might be noise or they might have broken something. They would never sleep, so they were always tired the next morning.”
"Both liked ice cream so much, particularly vanilla. During the night, they wanted to eat ice cream always, so I had to go out everywhere and find some to keep them happy. They were just kids”
according to nico they shared rooms and had wrestling matches
the unicyle™
"Probably the first bit of real competition we had was when Nico used to ride a unicycle everywhere, So I thought I've got to learn to ride this unicycle. I've got to be better than him'. I spent all my time outside the go-kart learning to ride this unicycle."
according to nico, it took lewis 2 hours to learn
Tumblr media
formula 1
nico started in f1 in 2006, lewis in 2007
toto on them: "What is the past between the two? There was a lot of historical context that none of us knew, and will never know."
they had their first shared podium at the australian gp in 2008
Tumblr media
look at them! they were so excited about it! (the gif is mine)
Tumblr media
lewis even called dino to tell him about it
in 2013 lewis took a gamble and joined mercedes and became once again nico’s teammate
at the malaysian gp - after the team ordered nico not to overtake lewis - this is what lewis said
“If I'm honest I feel Nico should be standing here. He had better pace through the race. Nico deserved to be where I am. Would I let him past in the future? I probably would."
2013 went really good, they had fun, filmed a lot of cringey commercials and helped develop the car. it was mostly fun and games
they are still to this day neighbors in monaco, but back then they used to hang out all the time and eat burgers together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in 2014 is when shit started happening
monaco quali
during quali at the monaco gp 2014, nico missed a breaking point and went to the run off area. but because he had the provisional pole and lewis was on a faster lap just at the end of the session, people accused him of pulling a shumi™ and doing it on purpose
when asked about it nico obviously said that it was not on purpose. he was investigated, but the stewards cleared him
“Of course I’m sorry for Lewis, I didn’t know where he was. Yeah, it’s not great.”
while lewis when asked if he believed it was on purpose he said “Potentially”
spain but the s is silent part one - spa 2014
trying to overtake lewis from p2, nico caused a punture and caused lewis to dnf (he finished p2) it was the first real accident between them. both of them admitted to being wrong, and toto said disciplinary measures were taken towards nico
lewis: “The fans want to see a clean fight until the end of the season and that's what we want to give them […] we have both made mistakes.”
“We had a meeting about it and he basically said he did it on purpose. He said he could have avoided it, but he didn't want to. He basically said, 'I did it to prove a point'."
and then in 2016 everything went completely wrong
the atmosphere was horrible according to people working with them
niki lauda: "In the beginning everything was fine but as it got more competitive, they both got against each other. The competition was only between Nico and Lewis who was going to be world champion.”
“They had no relation, which is always bad. They were so bad that they didn't even say hello in the morning to each other. I don't expect them to have breakfast together if they don't like each other, I don't expect them to sit down and have breakfast, but the relationship was really bad.”
"It affected Lewis mainly and Nico, so it was fine but not easy. Lewis got so upset about it that sometimes on the performance they lost because they played tricks on each other. One didn't show the other what set-up they were using, which is bad for the team again because we both want to go forwards.”
"They played all the tricks in the book. But for the team it was pretty tiring."
lewis too said nico and him were not friends
"Nico and I can count our friends on one hand, Nico does not come into those five friends I have, and I don't come in the five friends he has."
mercedes even threatened to sack them both at a point in 2016, right after barcelona
spain but the s is silent pt 2 - spain gp 2016
nico had started the race in a wrong engine mode, causing him to be way slower than lewis so he decides to overtake, but as he did, nico pushed him off the track where he spun and they both ended up in the gravel.
neither were penalized by the fia as it was a racing incident tho niki lauda and most of the media blamed lewis for this one
N: “I made it very clear I wasn't going to leave any space on the inside and I was very surprised he went for the gap".
lewis apologized to the team but never accepted the blame
abu dhabi gp 2016
season finale of the 2016 championship, lewis is leading the race, nico is second. in order not to lose the championship, lewis slows down, trying to get nico overtaken by other cars
it was a controversial move, and it divided public opinion
L: “I did nothing dangerous so I don’t feel I did anything unfair. We were fighting for the world championship. I was leading. I control the pace. That’s the rules.”
N: “You can understand the team’s perspective and you can enjoy Lewis’s perspective, There were many moments that were not enjoyable.”
the team got upset but someone else defended him
someone named christian horner (yes - that horner)
“Winning the race wasn’t going to be enough for him today, he needed cars between him and, if he’d charged off into the distance, he wouldn’t have created that possibility. So he won the race as slowly as he could. It’s like in a football game where the team might protect from the opposition by kicking the ball around and not enabling the opposition to get hold of the it. I didn’t see that he did anything wrong today.”
he even asked lewis to race for redbull
in the end, lewis won the race but nico won the championship. the celebrations were dry and everything - with nico straight up ignoring lewis on the podium
post season 2016
nico retired just after winning his first championship
L:“I’m probably one of the only people that it was not a surprise to. This is the first time he’s won a title in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop. He’s also got a family to focus on, and wants more children, and Formula One takes so much of your time. Will I miss the rivalry? Of course.”
2016 - now
nico immediately said after retiring that he wanted to make amends. he admitted to having played mind games and said it was the only way
he said: "I'm open to finding our way, y'know, and even having a good relationship again in the future. why not?"
i can’t cite this whole interview cause it’s long, but you should watch it. they way he talks about lewis is fascinating
nico follows lewis on ig, made multiple posts to congratulate him on all his major achievements - and there’s been many - and is basically his number one fan and cheerleader - watch this video by yours truly if you want to see for yourself the heart eyes this motherfucker has - the dude is obsessed but aren’t we all
lewis on the other hand kinda pretends nico doesn’t exist really, doesn’t follow him back and doesn’t acknowledge nico’s posts about him and nico has said they don’t have each other’s number
this is why we kinda lost our minds when lewis mentioned nico and called him his best friend back then in drive to survive season 3
“There was a period of time the guy that has been my teammate has been my best friend. but when you work your life to win, and only one of you can win, it brings a lot of friction.”
this happened last year too but we shall never know what they talked about
Tumblr media
now for the plot twist! lewis was photographed hanging out on a yacht with nico (and susie and toto) in the year 2021
Tumblr media
i lost my mind over this tbh - hopefully this is a sign of reconciliation, i truly hope so for them both <3
here is the sunshine and britney tag, which i made to talk about our favorite ex-besties - you can find a few of us crying whenever nico says anything about lewis (he even went “can we go back to lewis hamilton” when the cameras changed from lewis’s lap he was commenting - poetic cinema), finding way too specific lyrics that hurt so good, and lose our minds over old pics of them cause they’re stellar
Tumblr media
hope i was exhaustive enough! (if you have any other qs please leave them to my inbox! i promise i won’t write you another essay i just love them so much!) :,)

Brocedes time line for a very patient anon
Lewis quotes in orange, Nico quotes in pink, everyone else is blue.
okay first some background knowledge:
Nico is rich as fuck. only child, born in Germany, brought up in Monaco. son of world champion Keke Rosberg
Lewis was born on a council estate in Stevenage and his dad had to work multiple jobs for him to start karting
Honestly I think the difference in their backgrounds is one of the things that pushed them together, they were both isolated from the rest of the kids, but I’m keeping this purely facts rather than speculation.
2000
They’re both 15 years old and are karting teammates for MBB (Mercedes Benz McLaren) in Formula A
Robert Kubica: “there was always competition. But they didn’t fight. It was friendly competition. There was always laughing afterwards.” // “they would even have races to eat pizza”
They often shared hotel rooms at the races which was a “scene of many wrestling matches between them”
Dino Chiesa (their karting boss) – “many times I was called by reception about some problem in the room. It might be noise, or they might have broken something. They would never sleep so they were always tired the next morning”
“they both liked ice cream so much, particularly vanilla. During the night they wanted to eat ice cream always, so I had to go out everywhere to find some and keep them happy”
Lewis would often persuade Nico to buy him sweets
They would have competitions over LITERALLY EVERYTHING
Lewis: “we always had great competition whether on the racetrack or computer games or playing football”
“probably the first bit of competition we had was when Nico used to ride a unicycle everywhere so I thought, ‘I’ve got to learn how to ride this unicycle. Ive got to be better than him.’ I spent all my time outside the go-kart learning to ride this unicycle”
Apparently it only took Lewis 2 hours to teach himself how to do it
In maybe 2013 ish (when they were still friends) Lewis reflected with– “I have never laughed so much than when we were racing together. Nico was kicking everyone’s butt at that time. We had so great races together and built a great relationship”
“we were just arriving and enjoying go-karts and eating pizzas every weekend, fighting all the time and just having fun, whereas now it’s all business.”
many times they would talk about what they would do when they got to f1, made plans hoping to be teammates and become world champions together.
“Nico would say ‘when I’m in formula one’ and for me it was always ‘if I ever get to formula one’. Because obviously Nico’s dad was a formula 1 driver- he knew he was going to make it.”
F1
Nico joined f1 in 2006 with williams, Lewis 2007 with McLaren. And man I WISH I knew what went down with this two when Lewis nearly one his rookie season (missing out by one point to mr fernando alonso) and then WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP in his SECOND SEASON (again by one point thank you mr alonso)
2008 Australia
Nicos gets his first podium, and ofc Lewis is there (he won it) and they are jumping around in the cool down room. Just, two kids who are literally living the one thing they have spent their whole lives dreaming about together. Lewis won the championship that year and oh wow I can only imagine their celebrations together.
Tumblr media
2013
They’re teammates in Mercedes!!!
Nico: “every other day there are moments or things that pop up and I can smirk and thing, ‘that’s exactly the same as it was 15 years ago’”
2013 Malaysian Grand Prix gets an honourable mention. This is the race with red bulls good old multi 21 but merc also had their own team orders, stopping nico from fighting for his first merc podium, but Lewis disagreed with it so it didn’t really spark that much tension between them- more the team.
2014
the start of the turbo-hybrid era so y’all know this was good in terms of performance.
2014 Bahrain Grand Prix
They were both fighting for the win and had a collision which prompted a “mock fight” in parc ferme after the race (which I really hope there’s a video of).
Turns out, Nico won because he had used engine modes banned by Mercedes to get a power advantage in the closing laps. which kinda pissed Lewis off
2014 Spanish Grand Prix
Lewis’ fourth win in a row and took lead in the championship. They were fighting till literally the last second and Lewis crossed the line 0.6 seconds ahead of Nico, who says he could have passed him with one more lap.
Lewis defended using the same banned engine modes that Nico had used in Bahrain. Yeah.
2014 Monaco Grand Prix
This is IT. This is peak petty bitch. This is the one people still cry about.
It’s the end of Q3, both of them are out on a lap, Nico ahead of lewis. Nico’s already on provisional pole but Lewis is pretty close.
And then,, Nico just,, parks his car?? He says he made a mistake but the guy doesn’t even crash he straight up just,, rolls to a stop into a slip road. So the yellow flags come out forcing Lewis to abort a lap that was in the makings of pole.
The stewards say it was a-okay but Lewis was convinced it was intentional (and let’s be honest, yeah it probably was) and he even claimed that merc’s data proved it. (low key surprised he didn’t just tweet out the telemetry but I guess he got a stern telling off from mclaren last time)
But *this* is when Lewis tells the world that they aren’t friends anymore. An iconic interview.
Nico then wins the race too, ending Lewis’s four win streak and putting Nico in the lead of the championship.
2014 Hungarian Grand Prix
Lewis has an engine failure in quali meaning he starts from the pit lane, but he does good to make his way up the pack but THEN there’s a safety car which puts him ahead of Nico but on a different strategy.
Nico asks if Lewis can let him past as he needs to pit again before the end of the race, which will give him the place back anyways. Lewis straight up refuses, he’s on a role here. He started from last, and Nico started from pole, why should he slow down to let his title rival through.
Mercedes strongly suggest that his blocking fucked up Nicos race but Niki Lauda is on Lewis’ side so he doesn’t get punished (We stan a supportive father figure) even though he did blatantly refuse to be a team player.
And guys, this is the last race before the summer break so you know Nico was left seething for four weeks.
2014 Belgian Grand Prix
Second lap, Nico attempts a clumsy move and there’s contact, giving Hamilton a puncture and knocking him out of the race.
There’s a lot of controversy but basically it turns out he crashed with him intentionally, not backing out of the corner to “prove a point”. Nico ended up finishing second but was punished by the team, forced to apologise, and even booed on the podium.
2014 Abu Dhabi
For some reason it ran for double points?? The first time in History??? But idk???
Lewis had a perfect start and went on to win it and take the title, Nico had a problem and was told to retire the car but he kept going anyway and finished 14th. Nico went into the cool down room to congratulate Lewis on the championship win, which. cute.
Lewis claimed his second championship. Which not only was huge because of the inter team rivalry, but also because of the large gap between his first win. This guy had lost out on winning the championship in his ROOKIE season by ONE POINT, and then WON it in his SECOND season, and then there was like a FIVE YEAR gap before he won it again.
Tumblr media
2015
Damnnn this car was fiiiinneeeeeee.
They do more laps in testing than any other car AND do it on a single power unit. And then. Australia. They take a one-two THIRTY FOUR seconds ahead of the third place Ferrari.
2015 Chinese Grand Prix
Nico is second in a one-two but claims that Lewis kept backing him up into Seb, trying to compromise his race (and help out his boyfriend).
Lewis gave zero shits: "It's not my job to look after Nico's race, it's my job to manage the car and bring the car home as healthy and as fast as possible. That's what I did."
2015 U.S. Grand Prix
If Lewis wins here he could also claim the title with three races to spare (you have to remember back then the title fight often went up to the last race so this was pretty cool)
Lewis very aggressively forced Rosberg wide at Turn 1 to claim the lead, and then there was some sexy fighting between the Mercs and Redbull all race. Nico led in the closing stages but made a mistake, running deep into a corner and letting Lewis past with only a handful of laps to go.
Nico finished P2 and had not only lost the race but the championship title. Nico was fuming, saying Lewis’ move at the start was “one step too far”.
This is the infamous cap throw in the cool down room. Lewis throws Nico his P2 hat, Nico straight up yeets it back at him. I tear up just thinking about it. They grow up so fast.
Tumblr media
2016
Nico had came so close to winning and I guess this was just, the last straw. All or nothing. This year he literally gave it everything he had. Lewis and him stopped speaking, Nico gave up literally the rest of his life and even stopped sleeping in the same bed as his wife and taking care of his kids, instead spending every moment trying to get into Lewis’ head. Honestly, I think he might be the only one that could beat Lewis. Just because he knew him *so well*. He literally threw away like 16 years of friendship. But also it’s like, he had to be world champion. He *had to*. His dad was champion and his whole life he’s been preparing to win it too. Tough luck that he raced in the same era as Mr. Best Driver The Sport Has Ever Seen.
Nico won the last few races of 2015, and the first four races of 2016. Lewis had a couple car problems and Nico had a good lead on him in the championship.
2016 Spanish Grand Prix
Gentlemen. A short view back to the past. Nico had made a switch error on the formation lap causing the car to go into the wrong engine mode. So he was running a lot slower than Lewis, who was fighting to claim back the lead.
Nico closed the door to keep him back, and Lewis lost control on the grass, and spins into Nico and taking them both out of the race in the first lap. This is probably one of the most iconic crashes. I’m pretty sure there’s a clip of this somewhere in black and white with the titanic music over the top.
Niki Lauda blamed this one on Lewis (I guess even a supportive dad has to be critical sometimes) "Lewis is too aggressive. It is stupid, we could've won this race".
2016 Austrian Grand Prix
Nico had been struggling with a brake issue all race but was still on the way to win it. But in the last lap Lewis had caught him up and gone in for the overtake.
Typical Nico not taking any shit, refusing to be the guy that backs out and they collide. Lewis took the win and a damaged Nico dropped to fourth. From first. In the last lap.
Both of them blamed each other and tired dad team boss Toto Wolff threatened team orders in future races.
The stewards blamed Nico for the incident, issuing him two penalty points for failing to allow "racing room" and causing a collision.
2016 Abu Dhabi
In the final laps of the race, Lewis ignored team-orders from his race engineer and the technical director.
He deliberately slowed and backed Nico into the pack hoping they overtake him, and there would be enough of a points difference to win the title.
Nico finished second and won the title by five points.
And then,,, Nico announced a surprise retirement during the FIA prize giving ceremony.
Lewis’ response:
"This is the first time he's won in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop.” (We stan a petty king)
“But he's also got a family to focus on and probably wants to have more children. Formula One takes up so much of your time."
“In terms of missing the rivalry, of course because we started karting when we were 13 and we would always talk about being champions. When I joined this team, Nico was there, which was something we spoke about when we were kids. So it's going to be very, very strange, and, for sure, it will be sad to not have him in the team next year."
And now they are kind of on speaking terms but not really, they are both pretty private but I think they are at the ‘awkward small talk when we run into each other at the supermarket’ stage of the break up.

Rhythm of Time - Part II
Tumblr media
Happy New Years everyone! Wanted to get at least one more part out before the end of the year 🤪 so here it is, before I get back to the other two in the works. Next one will probably be a bit more action filled, but I just wanted to let you guys into the background story behind the main character, for now 😉
As always, every kind of feedback is appreciated ❤️ Thanks for reading!
Part I | You’re here | Part III | ...
Getting back from the winter break was a lot more exciting this time. Knowing that I will have a bigger role in the team’s life meant I couldn’t wait to finally get back to them. For example pre-season testing was usually not the most interesting part of the season, I still felt like it was the biggest event of the year. I knew it would just get better with the races, but at that second it was everything I was hoping for. I couldn’t even care less about having to work with Mick, as it felt like I was floating over cloud nine because of the few days I got to work in a position that gave me so much control. The only thing I hoped for was it not getting into my head too much. No one really needed me acting like a bitch who knew she could easily break someone’s online character before getting kicked off the team. Mick was a tad bit lucky that I wasn’t truly angry at him.
Travelling to Australia made everything seem even more real as I had to manage all the press day activities even before we got to the country. I knew it won’t be easy work, but I was still looking forward to it and was able to do everything with a smile staying on my face as I actually enjoyed planning everything and not just looking at the plans someone else put together. That was fun too, and the only way you can learn, but after experiencing what it’s like to manage everything myself I would have never changed it back to the original setup. Only if it was the only way to fix a horrible situation.
Arriving at the hotel I knew it would be a night full of turning and tossing as my excitement over the top for the whole flight and car ride to the hotel. I tried having a shower so I could calm down my mind, but as soon as I met up with the team again it just started racing all around the space in my head. We had a little meeting about the next few days in Mick’s room, before everyone called it a night and returned to their rooms. As I wanted to still ask about some of his preferences I stayed with him, as he was packing out a little from his suitcases. I was now just watching him after noting down his answers for my probably dumb questions.
„ Do you usually pack out even for just a few days? ” I asked curiously and saw as his movements stopped for a moment. Thinking about it he probably didn’t expect a question that wasn’t about something professional after what we just went through.
„ Yeah, usually. It feels more organized. ” He shrugged a little, getting out some more t-shirts as I realised I should probably leave. It wasn’t something that strangers should watch you do. At least that’s how I felt like. Just as I was about to stand up and leave he spoke up again. „ Are you comfortable with working next to me? Working with me? ” He asked, still looking only at his clothes.
„ Why wouldn’t I be? ” I asked back immediately before I could have thought about it. If I had waited just a second longer I would have realised what he’s talking about. Or more like implying. „ When I told you I’m over it, I meant it. I would never say something like that without it being the truth. ” I shook my head gently, still standing up from the chair because I felt like it would be better if I leave after this is over.
„ I know, or more like I hoped so. It just feels shitty to know that I acted that way and now you’re almost forced into working with me. ” He sighed, finally turning to me, although his fingers were still fiddling with one of his sweaters. „ I just know that this is still fun and games but will be a lot harder as the season goes on. I just want to make sure that we’re okay and that you know I can be trusted, even if I fucked up in the past. ” He let go of the cotton, coming closer to me but just as my breathing would have stopped from his proximity, he sat down on his bed.
„ Quite literally, yeah? ” I tried joking with him, but as soon as his expression changed I knew it wasn’t the best decision. „ Hey, I was just joking, we’re okay. I have never thought of you as someone who’s irresponsible just because you did something most teenagers do at least once in their life. ” I shook my head, still smiling so he could be sure that I meant what I said.
„ I know most people take part in it at least once, but I have never been like them. I can’t really be like them ever. Still I don’t want to be treated better than how they would be. ” He sounded anxious and I felt like he wanted me to be mad at him, because he thought he wouldn’t deserve how I treated him.
„ I don’t give a shit about who you are. ” I blatantly told him, probably stopping his rambling. „ I’m not mad at you, because you did nothing wrong. If you would do something stupid and would have treated me wrng while we were together, you wouldn’t like to be in the same room as me. Your name couldn’t have saved you from my fury. ” I shrugged looking him straight in the eyes so he would finally understand and accept the situation. „ The only thing I want you to do is to forget about it finally. The quicker we stop talking about it, the less awkward situations we’re gonna have in the future. '' I added as a last thing, so we could fully close this chapter of our life.
„ Understood. Never bringing it back up again. ” He let out a sigh but was finally accompanied by a smile on his face. I was about to stand up and leave finally, when his expressions changed again and I knew he will speak up. „ When did you change your name? ” He asked, making my eyebrows furrow as for a second I didn’t understand his question.
„ Oh… a little after we met. After my birthday. ” I answered, but felt like it was the perfect moment to leave, before we would go too far with this topic. „ It’s my mum’s. Felt more comfortable living with this one. ” I shrugged a little, as I got to his door and opened it so I could finally leave. I quickly wished him a goodnight before turning towards my own room and crossed the hallway to get to it in just seconds.
The next few days still felt awkward, even more because of him bringing up my dad in a way, but I tried to get over it and hoped he wouldn’t ask a lot more about the person I always tried to close off from my life. Even if I could never fully accomplish my plan as he would still be my father and he will be connected to me in a way forever. Luckily with the race weekends time seemed to fly by at 5 times speed and forgetting was a lot easier when you had to focus on your job and tasks. We were already at the fifth circuit when I realised that we finally got over our past and could have conversations without even touching onto it.
As for racing, Mick was doing quite well. He was still deemed new to the F1 cars and the other drivers, but he took on the challenges and did his best. We all knew he won’t be winning the championship this year, also with a Haas car, although we never really talked about this in front of Günther, but he still pushed it to the limit and got everything out of it. Sometimes he asked for more than what it had, but he always caught it in time and got it under control, before anything could have happened. I was mostly just happy that my job only involved the outside world, and not the one inside the cockpit. My nerves could barely handle watching the races now that I knew someone quite personally from the grid. I knew most of the drivers and had talked to them on several occasions, but I never really got close to them. Mick was really something else compared to them, as I spent almost everyday following him, and we never really stayed silent as we attended interviews one by one before and also after practices, qualis and races too. I could say that I did not feel regret when I thought about my decision I took just a couple of months ago.
Even when we arrived in Spain at the beginning of the week, and realised how hot it will be on the weekend, I did not regret having to walk around the paddock almost 24/7 for three days in a row. I wasn’t the only one affected by the heat wave as everyone in the garage moved around slower than usual. They mostly got themselves together for Sunday, as I was quite surprised to see the speed at which everyone was running around when we entered after all the interviews were done. While Mick had to go get ready I took a seat next to the engineers and let everyone else work around us while I took one of the headsets so I wouldn’t lose my hearing this soon.
„ Everything good? ” Pete, Mick’s engineer asked from next to me, as he turned towards me with the headset pushed off of one of his ears.
„ Yeah, he’s doing well. Composed but still confident, whatever they ask him. ” I nodded a little, while I almost blindly got the team profile open so I could make sure it was up to date. „ Is she already here? ” I asked back, knowing that Corinna wanted to attend today’s GP to support Mick.
„ Yes, I saw her talking to Günther but she tried to stay away from the garage. She probably wants Mick to focus on the job and not her. ” He shrugged a little, looking back at the screens in front of him when someone from the mechanic crew came up to him with a question.
Mick was already in the car, seconds away from leaving the garage when his mum showed up. She still stayed in the background until they were given the sign and both cars could enter the pitlane. I sent her a small smile when she passed me, giving up my seat gladly, so she could watch the race and be close to the radio, as I was completely fine with watching it on the screens that were set up for the mechanics. I didn’t really get to talk to her yet since the start of the season, but she seemed kind and I looked up to her for coming to races, even after everything that happened to their family. It meant a lot to her son, every time she came out to support him. Even I could tell, seeing it from the outside.
Both of the Haas cars took the start perfectly, taking up better positions for most of the lap before they all started fighting each other. After the first few laps I went to get myself a coffee, before sitting back down in the garage out of the way as I didn’t really want to block the mechanics if there was going to be a pit-stop or anything. They were just about to call both of them in when we saw Mick spin at turn 10, sliding off the track into the gravel trap, right until the tyre barrier caught the car. My hand stopped in the middle of lifting the mug to my lips, as I watched him crash and hoped that they would show him getting out of the car as soon as possible. I let out the breath that was stuck inside my lungs when I heard Pete talking to him as it meant he was fine enough to communicate. I immediately felt pathetic about my reaction and tried to just slip into the background before someone would spot the worry on my face I was experiencing inside.
Turning towards the engineers I saw Corinna shift in her seat uncomfortably, probably listening to Mick explaining what happened. It wasn’t a horrible crash but there was always a possibility for injuries whenever they hit each other or the barriers. We watched relieved as he finally climbed out and left the car with the marshals, and got onto a golf cart that brought him back to the garage. He was checked out by the team doctor as soon as he got back and was fortunately cleared by him for any serious injury. I let Corinna talk to him before I would bring up having to talk to the reporters.
I only went into his room when the race ended and I knew we would have to leave for the media pen if we wanted to be on time. He was already changed back to team clothing with a little ice pack on his left wrist while holding his phone in his other hand. I cleared my throat to get his attention and he immediately looked up at me, before pushing himself off the bed. I let him leave the garage hallway first, following him as we aimed for the people already standing around the cameras.
„ You only have two. If you feel dizzy or anything just let me know and we can leave immediately. Everyone will understand. ” I told him when I caught up to him. I always hated how I was almost running next to everyone if they were walking at their normal speed, thanks to my shorter legs.
„ I’m fine. ” He answered shortly, looking mostly at the ground in embarrassment. He didn’t seem happy, and I knew that his mood probably won’t change for the day.
He still forced a small smile onto his face when we got to the pen and he held it right until he answered the last question. I was proud of him for how he held himself together even though I knew inside he was angry at himself and how the day went. I followed him back to the garage, being the first one to enter so I could get my things from inside. I waited for him to get his backpack and we left together.
„ What a shitshow of a race it was. ” He let out a sigh as we were walking through the paddocks, towards the parking lot. „ And in front of my mum… ” He added with a sigh, pushing his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
„ Everyone crashes once in a while. Corinna was probably just happy to see you get out of there. ” I shook my head a little looking up at him. „ There’s always next week when you can try again. ” I added, trying to lift his spirits even though I knew it probably won’t help.
We were just about to get into the car when someone called my name from behind us, and I knew from just the voice who it was. Stepping away from the door I motioned for Mick to get in so they could leave before my dad caught up to us. I let out a sigh as I watched the car leave and I turned back to see my dad just seconds away from reaching me. I really wasn’t in the mood to talk to him, although I couldn’t remember the last time I felt like talking to him for longer than exchanging a quick ’hi’. Somehow I felt like this won’t be a simple conversation about me getting a real job or about how my siblings are. It was never that straightforward with him.

vro0m’s rewatch - 133/310
2014 Chinese GP
Hi! It's round 4! Everybody has high expectations following the Bahrain GP. I worry that we'll all be disappointed.
Apparently there's a lot of graining here, and it was a wet quali, so the track was washed clean and they can choose their tyres. It's going to be strategic then.
We see Lewis in the drivers' parade. He says they get more and more fans here every year. He says it's gonna be a tough day and degradation is going to play a big part. He's not focused at all, he's waving to the fans. He says the graining is less of a concern as it gets hotter so he hopes it's going to be less of an issue during the race.
The journalists think Lewis is starting to get in Nico's head. They think Lewis is playing games, for example when he said after the race that he was slower than Nico. Nico is still leading the WDC but he has to win today to turn this situation around, because Lewis is coming for him.
Quali report. It was indeed very wet. So that's 3 wet quali out of 4 so far this season. Maldonado didn't go out at all because the car was broken, with an oil leak. Q1 went down without surprises. In Q2, it was Lewis who set the pace on inters. Massa and Raikkonen basically raced each other down the straight trying to get some clear track. But Raikkonen messed up and starts in 11th. The McLarens were also out in Q2. Jenson seems dispirited. Grosjean and Seb struggled to stay on track in Q3. Seb got the hang of it and he starts 3rd on the grid, but Daniel managed to outqualify him and starts P2. And guess who's on pole? It's Lewis again! 3 poles out of 4! Rosberg spun trying to catch him, and so he starts 4th.
That's Lewis 34th pole already! Damn these numbers are starting to add up. This rewatch is really going along isn't it?
There's a whole segment about Domenicalli resigning from his job. They're talking about the lack of results, Alonso listing the championships they could've won and didn't. He's being replaced by a man who has zero F1 experience (why tf would you do that jesus christ), enters Marco Mattiacci, until then president and CEO of Ferrari North America. He said even he was surprised by the job offer. Then Alonso and an Italian journalist say you don't need racing experience and point out the example of Briatore who sold t-shirts before he got involved in F1. I mean sure, but that didn't end well did it? Mattiacci says he loves racing and does so in his spare time. For some reason the background music is the Game of Thrones title theme????? (note : actually the timing of posting this review in 2022 when Binotto just left Ferrari is very funny)
Brundle and Bruno Senna analyze the fight between Lewis and Nico in Bahrain. First Rosberg's overtake on Lewis that didn't work out, and how very close to a catastrophe they got as the contact could've resulted in a broken front wing for Rosberg and a puncture for Lewis (spoiler : foreshadowing.......). We are shown their respective lines on the track, just like I told you about in the last review, Lewis realizing he will be overtaken and going slightly wider to turn in sooner and keep the inside line. And then the second try, when it didn't work and Nico was ahead. They demonstrate how Lewis was strategizing his lines as they went, giving up on the current corner to position his car in a way that would allow him to overtake him in the next one, thinking ahead like a chess player. It's very impressive. They switch to show us Seb and Daniel also doing it well in Bahrain, and then Seb and Webber crashing in the 2010 Turkish GP compared to Jenson and Lewis fighting fairly in the same race. (And that really shows you how fair and clean a driver he usually is, contrary to some ridiculous claims that have been made in 2021 lol)
Now we get Lewis telling us about his pole lap as usual. He said it was very slippery. You try to figure out where to brake as you fight the understeer, all the while taking the wind into account. He shows the spot where he lost a lot of time locking up one of his front tyres which also affected the next corner. Then he thought he needed to gain more time in the rest of the lap. He shows the areas of standing water. He thought he'd miss a turn because he went in too deep but fortunately his car turned at the right time. Brundle says the title is clearly either coming to him or Nico. He makes a gesture with his microphone and a face that says "man come on…"
Tumblr media
But Brundle presses further. Lewis says "well at the moment" but the Redbulls have a very good car and good down force. "If they can get their engine sorted I think they'll be fighting us hard."
Tumblr media
He thinks it's "naturally" going to happen at some point in the season and he hopes Mercedes keeps moving forward as well. Brundle asks if he can take a psychological advantage from Rosberg making loads of mistakes while he himself is putting on the pressure. He says yes, when you're in practice and you put in a lap you think is good and realize your teammate is a few tenths faster than you… he says he knows how it feels, and it makes you think you have to push more. Brundle says in F1 you're either giving pressure or taking it and Lewis chuckles as he answers he likes it better when he's giving it than taking it.
Tumblr media
He reiterates the race is going to be difficult, the track is really hard on the tyres.
Formation lap
Lewis backs them up to the point it looks like he's stopped on the track completely lol. Brundle says it makes a lot of sense to do that and he's surprised they don't see it more often. It kind of became standard since then didn't it?
And they're racing!
Massa overtakes Rosberg who has a bad start. Alonso is also ahead of him, BUT HE MAKES CONTACT WITH MASSA! Alonso still gets ahead and overtakes Daniel to go fight Seb who also got ahead of his teammate into turn 1. Lewis is getting away already! Hulkenberg and Rosberg are fighting for P6. At the end of the first lap, Lewis is 1.5 seconds ahead of Seb, then come Alonso, Daniel, Massa, Rosberg, Hulkenberg, Grosjean, Raikkonen and Bottas. And Valtteri overtakes Raikkonen for P9. Hulkenberg complains he has front wing damage. Valtteri overtakes Grosjean as well! And Rosberg overtakes Massa for P5. Sutil retires for the third time in a row. Alonso complains of graining. Lewis says he also has graining on the left front but the tyres are doing quite good and it's not causing any problem. Seb also reports "serious graining on the front left" but he's told there's no good gap behind. There's telemetry problems for Rosberg, but Lewis is fine.
We're 10 laps in. Lewis is almost 10 seconds ahead. The order hasn't changed : Seb, Alonso, Daniel, Rosberg, Massa, Hulkenberg, Bottas, Raikkonen as Grosjean pits and Kvyat now in P10. We're told Massa also has telemetry problems. Massa and Raikkonen pit in response to Grosjean but there's an issue for Massa! It's long… he shakes his head. They seem to not have had the correct rear tyres ready or something… and even now that they have them they struggle to put them on. He throws his hands in the air, shakes his head again and lift his visor. It's so long my god. The mechanic finally lifts his hands, the brakes are smoking from being stopped for so long, and even then they take a long time to set the car back down for him to leave. Terrible. Alonso comes in. Hulkenberg comes in. Rosberg asks his team to check his front wing when he comes in, and they say there might be rubber stuck in it. Seb pits. He comes back out behind Alonso though! Rosberg is called in. Seb is closing on Alonso, they're fighting for P3 but virtually for P2. Bono : "okay Lewis, so Ricciardo the only car that's in our pit window at the moment, you're 4 tenths faster than him last lap." Seb says they're too slow in the straights to overtake Alonso, he asks if it's worth backing off. He's told yes. Daniel pits from P2, he's out in P5. That should clear Lewis’ window? But he comes on the radio to say "surprisingly the front tyres still feel really good, as well as the rears." But Crofty points out his lap tyres aren't as good as they were so he'll have to come in anyway to keep Alonso and Seb at bay. Oh and we see he did lock up a bit, and went wide. He's actually struggling with grip. Yep. He pits. It's a good 2.9 stop and he's back out in the lead still, but of course Alonso is significantly closer now. Mercedes has to ask Rosberg to read certain numbers on his steering wheel so they can calculate the amount of fuel he has left as they can't get his telemetry data. He's told he's good on fuel.
It's lap 20. Lewis is 5 seconds ahead of Alonso. Then we have Seb, Rosberg, Daniel, Hulkenberg, Bottas, Raikkonen, Grosjean and Perez. It's not a fascinating race so far ngl. Daniel is told his pace is good and only the Mercedes are quicker than him. Indeed Rosberg is closing on Seb. And they're wheel to wheel in the straight! He goes a bit deep in the corner, but he manages to stay ahead while Seb has to carefully avoid contact. Now they're in the pit straight, one behind the other, very very close still. Seb takes the outside line, they're wheel to wheel again! But as the track turns to the left, the advantage goes to Rosberg, who stays ahead. Seb has to fall back a bit and Daniel is right there, watching, waiting. And there he goes, attacking Seb in the next lap. DRS for Ricciardo while Seb lost the DRS over Rosberg. But it's too far still. Oh and Seb is told once again to let him through. Daniel is told to get close and overtake him. Seb asks what tyres he's on. "Primes, but he stopped later than you," says Rocky. "Tough luck," Seb answers. So he's not obeying is he? Brat (affectionate). And yep. Seb defends against Daniel. But Ricciardo is close, and he has the DRS advantage. He takes the inside line, and Seb gives up. Crofty and Brundle debate whether he yielded or made a mistake. We hear another team radio message. "Sebastian, Daniel is on a two-stop." Seb tells them to think about boxing. Grosjean is told to use 4th gear as little as possible as they are having problems with it. He exclaims that he can't! But he's told they have to or it's DNF. Rocky : "Sebastian, stay out, it helps us, please stay out. We are aware." And Grosjean goes off track and joins back. He comes in and retires.
It's lap 30. Lewis complains about his tyres. He’s still in the lead of course, 13.3 seconds ahead of Alonso. Then the order goes Rosberg, Ricciardo, Seb, Hulkenberg, Bottas, Raikkonen, Perez and Kvyat. And here we go for the second wave of pit stops with Hulkenberg and Bottas. Rosberg is told to push to overtake Alonso, but he's still 1.5 behind so. Idk about that. Alonso pits. Then Seb pits. There's 20 laps to go. Rosberg and Ricciardo pit. Lewis is called in, they say they will clean his front wing for some reason. He was a bit slow to leave the box, 3.9. He's still in the lead though. Like. BY FAR. Earlier we saw the fuel use of the top 10 and for some reason there wasn't any data for Bottas. Ted says it's because his telemetry isn't working either. But we had Rosberg's, which prompts Crofty to ask whether they fixed his issue but Brundle says it might affect some components of telemetry and not others. However he did have to tell them what his fuel consumption was earlier so. Idk.
Lap 40, and indeed they ask him for it again. He says : "33.5. It really annoys me to do that so I need to stop doing that now." He's closing on Alonso. And here you go. He overtakes him easily. Ricciardo is faster than Alonso as well, but he's 6 seconds down. Can he make it? 10 laps to go. Now Daniel is told Alonso is matching his pace. "Keep pushing!" 5 laps to go. Ricciardo gets the DRS from a back marker but actually loses a bit of time overtaking him. Final lap. Lewis says he got the checkered flag, for some reason.
And it's the end of the race!
It's the first time Lewis wins three races in a row. Rosberg P2, Alonso P3. It wasn't a very interesting race.
Tumblr media
Rosberg is still leading the WDC but only by 4 points now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nico doesn't look too happy in the cool down room. The Mercedes representative tries to make small talk with him and he barely answers and kind of shrugs it off. Lewis and Alonso are talking off camera I believe. These men don't have too much to say to each other. Rosberg sarcastically asks Lewis if it was a tough race. Lewis laughs a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For some reason Lewis hands his trophy over to Nico to let him feel its weight I think? They do look unusually light.
Tumblr media
Just like Seb once, Lewis sprays the podium girls and the cameraman. I don't like it when they do that, I find it a bit obnoxious tbh.
Brundle says it looked easy from where they stood. Lewis says he couldn't have done it without the hard work from the team. He can't believe how good that car is. He says surprisingly the tyres did very well even though the quali was wet. He says he was racing himself really. He's happy Nico is up there with him, he really deserves it. Later Brundle jokes they can't improve this car any more than that! Lewis says the team is on a roll and they have to keep working hard because the others are pushing to catch them.
In the garage, some guys are dancing as they drink.
Tumblr media
Lewis is getting ready for the team photo and already trying to get the champagne bottle out of his team member’s hands.
Tumblr media
He does so forcefully and then sprays the guy who had it with it lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nico's there and Toto and they take the photo as one of them sprays the champagne in the air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(idk what Nico was saying but he looks so annoyed AND annoying in this gif lmao, absolute diva)
And that's how they interview him, as he wipes his eyes from the champagne.
Tumblr media
They talk about his hair? Simon says "the power of the mohawk!" Lewis smiles wide. He says he didn't plan to have his hair look like this, it just grows that way.
Tumblr media
Simon asks if they can have a look, he says no and Johnny tries to take away his cap, which. Consent, man? Ever heard of it?
Tumblr media
Lewis laughs it off and gets the conversation back on track : he's so proud of his team, the energy is great and he hopes it is as good in the factory as it is there. He's grateful he can put in performances like today. Simon says they often travel with these guys and they seem very very happy. He says though Lewis still has to do the work on the track and it seems to be going so well at the moment, with three 1-2. Lewis says of course it's great when you're winning but they're not getting complacent, they're working hard, the guys are pushing hard. They're still trying to improve the car even though it's very good. He says he feels like he's growing with the team and the car. He's more comfortable with the car this year, he understands it better and that's what you see in the results. Johnny says his messages on the radio sound so positive, is it what he's feeling : positivity? Lewis nods "it is, it is… are you gonna give me your mic?"
Tumblr media
Johnny forgot he didn't have one. They laugh at him. Lewis says he's had amazing support here from the fans, he sees them at the airport and in the hotel, they're amazing. Simon says that's 25 wins now, equal with Niki and Jim Clarke. He says he's pushed Fangio out of the top 10.
Tumblr media
Simon says he always says he doesn't know but he must know! Lewis says he doesn't, he doesn't know the stats until they tell him. He gets reflective, he says it's remarkable for him to come from Stevenage and he never believed he'd end up there. All the work his dad and family put in to get him there, he is so grateful. "And to be up there with the greats, I hope my dad's proud, I hope my family's proud because, I mean, I'm working to continue on the journey that they helped me get on." He's way more serious as he says that. I wonder how they get along at that time, we haven't seen Anthony in a while.
It's awful btw because talking about consent you see these men forcing their way to take photos with him. First while he's blinded by the champagne some guy comes, puts his hand on his shoulder without asking and takes a photo. And when they start the interview he's still behind him taking selfies, leaning in very close to him where he can't see him. And then during the interview you see this other guy behind him trying to get his photo taken next to him while he talks. It must be so annoying. It's like he's not a person but just a monument or something. I don't like seeing it.

vro0m’s rewatch - 16/288
2007 Chinese GP
Here’s the recap + gifs for the penultimate race of the 2007 season !
So Lewis is pole again! But also it’s been raining here too. It’s hot and humid.
Tumblr media
He had to go to the stewards because of his driving behind the Safety Car in Fuji. I’m not surprised by that given that as I said in that recap, he brake tested Alonso. However, the stewards decided that the conditions back then were so challenging that no one was to be penalised.
My god there is this cliché so-called traditional Chinese music in the background of the quali summary it’s incredibly cringe. Anyway, Alonso was furious because he’s fourth. Behind Lewis are Raikkonen and Massa.
Button is heard saying Lewis deserves all the credit for his season and that he’s done a great job in a weird segment on the build-up in which Louise goes around in a VW bus with him and then they go ride mountain bikes for some reason.
In the meantime the teams are wondering what tyres they should start the race on as rain is announced. Lewis is arriving in the garage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s just out there taking photos with this kid.
Tumblr media
Adorable.
Now we get a little montage of the season with music or whatever in which this incredible unholy thoughts-provoking footage can be seen :
Tumblr media
Oh god they’re also putting all the crashes in this thing, including Kubica’s gruesome one. I hate them.
Now we’re told Lewis had to withstand more pressure in his first season than many more experienced drivers ever had to in their entire careers. Everybody including Lewis is optimistic that he can win the championship today, as he only needs to finish in front of Alonso to do so if I understand correctly. The journalists are saying there’s a sense of destiny there and that McLaren feel like they are in touch with the future of F1. I guess they didn’t expect to be quite that right about it, though. Also nobody in the history of the sport ever reached 100 points as quickly as he did.
Now they’re getting to the grid. The journalist talked to Lewis the day before. This interview is really interesting RE: the current situation so I will post a snippet of it in a separate post after that but here’s a summary : first he talks about getting investigated for his driving and states he was surprised and unhappy about that. As I said earlier I don’t think it was surprising per se as he DID drive dangerously however what surprises me is that they waited for a whole week to investigate it. Like, you’re at another track, another race and NOW you want to give out penalties?! Nah. Anway he didn’t get a penalty in the end so let’s move on. The journalist brings up the fact that he’s already said before he’s frustrated with the politics in F1 (which didn’t get better since then did it?). Lewis explains that he absolutely loves being a F1 driver but yes, it is really hard to focus on your job when the politics are being pushed in your face constantly. That’s the part that I thought really resonated with what’s going on now. He says he’s doing everything he can to stay out of trouble and not do one thing wrong so no one can come for him. Then he goes on to talk about what would happened if he won. He would be happy for Ron Dennis who was called crazy for hiring him and to see his dad smiling in the crowd and for his whole family. He says the whole reason he’s been doing this is because he enjoys driving the car.
So they are on the grid and we’re told that it will rain in 12 minutes. Stressed.
Formation lap, there’s slight rain on the onboard cameras.
And they’re racing !
Lewis takes an amazing start! Great job. Alonso overtakes Massa but Massa takes his spot right back. There’s not much rain compared to the Japanese GP but the spray is impressive nonetheless. However, it’s also drying fast. On lap 2, Lewis is already a full second faster than Raikkonen behind him.
We’re told Alonso really threw a fit after quali because he has to finish in front of Lewis to stay in contention for the WDC. Apparently he slammed doors and threw his helmet across the room and shxt.
It’s raining for longer than expected. It seems most if not all the drivers are on intermediates. On lap 8 they start to look for wet spots on the track to keep the temperature of their tyres down. Seems the pitstop might start soon.
But now RedBull says there’s more rain to come! Also Alonso is waaaaay slow.
Wild Keanu Reeves!
Tumblr media
Lewis pits on lap 15. It’s earlier than they wanted. They’re not changing his tyres, just refuelling. He goes out 4th. Massa also pits a few laps later and does the same thing : refuelling, no new tyres. Now Alonso, same thing. He goes out with more fuel than Lewis though. And Raikkonen, also just fuel. Sutil spins in the meantime but manages to keep it out of the gravel trap. He’s not the first to spin btw. Raikkonen gets back out behind Lewis, but much closer than before.
He’s seriously picking up the pace now, he’s right behind him. This pitstop strategy really helped him. Also we see a replay of a Toyota pitstop during which they lost a tyre in the pitlane lol
Tumblr media
There’s been a collision between Schumacher and Liuzzi. Ahhh and Kubica is now pitting for dry tyres. It’s a risky strategy as they are expecting more rain. Alonso is trying to overtake Massa. He succeeds but Massa is pitting anyway. He’s getting dry tyres also. There’s only 3 seconds between Raikkonen and Lewis by now. And there you have it! It’s starting to rain again! Schumacher spins for a second time and Sutil has crashed. Alonso runs wide. Lewis is very slow this lap and Raikkonen catches up to him. Lewis runs wide! They’re wheel to wheel. He manages to keep the lead but by now their wet tyres are basically slicks from driving on the dry track and they have no grip. Yellow flags in this section of the track because of Sutil’s crash but they’re now side by side again in the straight. Lewis still resists! What a fight!
We’re halfway through the race. The pace is gone. The tyres are gone. Lewis’ car is slipping. Raikkonen overtakes him. Rosberg is pushed out of the track into the gravel by two other drivers. Alonso is 2 second faster than Lewis now. Raikkonen already has 3.7 seconds on him. He’s struggling so badly! He has to pit there’s no way he can keep going like this! But if he refuells enough to go to the end of the race he’ll be too heavy, and if he has to pit a third time he’s fxcked. Alonso is not far behind now. The mechanics are getting ready. Alonso might pit first? No, it’s really for Lewis. OMG HE COULDN’T MAKE THE TURN FOR THE PIT LANE
Tumblr media
NOOOO HE’S STUCK IN THE GRAVEL! He keeps his engine on, he gestures to the marshal to push him?! Are they even allowed to??? He’s not gone across the white line so his mechanics can’t come and get him! The marshals can’t get him going anyway, allowed or not. They are pushing the car but it won’t move. It’s over. He has to give up. Yep. He’s getting out of the car now. Omg. He must be sooooo disappointed.
We can see him walk through the paddock or wherever through a CROWD of journalists. Best believe he’s not taking his helmet off and not talking.
Now Kubica who was in the lead has a technical problem and has to retire. The lead is Raikkonen, Alonso, Massa.
Listen there’s 12 laps to go but I’m not even watching anymore. It’s heartbreaking. Now Louise is trying to get Lewis to talk to her through all the other journalists as he’s getting back into the garage. He’s taken his helmet and overalls off now. He just says yeah, the tyres were finished and these things happen. Omg. BDE x10000. As Louise asks if he can try to sum up how he’s feeling he says : “I’m sorry for the team, but I can still do it just don’t worry.”
It’s still obvious he’s frustrated and disappointed though.
Tumblr media
He’s shown shaking the hand of each one of the mechanics before he heads for the pitwall. We love to see it.
Tumblr media
Everyone seems so worried and disappointed for him. aaaaaaaaah 🥲
In the meantime Seb is 4th?!
Lewis is now more willing to talk. He says his tyres were literally destroyed to the point you could see the canvas. He apologies to his team, admits he’s gutted to have made such a mistake but that’s life. He claims he’s already focused on Brazil now.
It’s the end of the race! Raikkonen, Alonso, Massa. Seb really did finish 4th. Great job from him and his team, they pitted at the exact right moment.
After the podium and celebrations, we hear Lewis has left the circuit after giving polite answers to all the journalists’ questions. He can be seen walking away and like earlier it’s very obvious he’s focused not to let his emotions show. His closed-off expression makes me think of the one Max has shown throughout a lot of the 2021 season, at least in front of the media. Stolid. Aloof. Like this is the smallest thing to ever happen in the world. But in both cases, in both men, it did a poor job of hiding the pressure they really felt at the time.
