"are you ready, vernon? we've got to leave now if we want to get there as early as your dad is asking us to!" calling to the bathroom, you smooth out the last wrinkles clumping in your dress as you pivot in the mirror.

vernon was speaking at his father's dinner party for the first time as the up-and-coming ceo of 'chwe law & co.' offices and had invited you as his plus one for the evening. as his girlfriend (and to vernon, his future wife), you had been the one to keep vernon on track today, reminding him of what was to come later this evening.

"vernon, we've got to go─" you sigh, turning away from the mirror just as the bathroom door finally opens. out comes vernon, dress shoes clicking against the wooden floor as he looks at you with that cute, familiar blank look on his face.

his suit is straight without wrinkles, the double collar perfectly sharp as the tie peaks from behind. he's glowing, and whether it's because he did his skincare like he had promised you he would start doing, or the shine of the lights on his soft skin, you couldn't tell.

"holy hell, vernon." you breathe out, too shocked to try to watch your language. vernon stares at you, the ghost of a frown on his face as he sighs.

"fuck, did i get the collar wrong?" vernon walks up to you, wide brown eyes sparkling like a puppy as you lift your hands up, running them over his shoulders as you shake your head slowly.

"no, vern. not at all," you whisper, studying him up close for the first time since you had seen him. his eyelashes are as long and pointed as ever, complimenting his brown eyes perfectly. vernon's hair is styled nicely too, with bangs complimenting the sharpness of his jaw.

"you look really good. if only i knew you could clean up this nicely." you tease quietly, too in awe of vernon's features to say anything.

vernon laughs, shrugging as he gets a good look at your outfit. "damn, you look really nice too. very pretty."

the compliment, however simple and overused it may be, made your heart do somersaults in your chest. vernon was a man of little words, so when he said things like this and looked at you like you had hung the stars in the sky, you melted on the spot.

"come here and kiss me, vernon. i need you," you sigh softly, and vernon does what you ask, walking up to you as he lets his hands fall to your hips without a second thought.

before you know it, your lips are on his and he's pressing into your body like you're the only thing he has left. your phones are buzzing in time with each other, but you're too absorbed in vernon's hands on your hips, his supple lips on yours, and the low groans he's letting out under you to even care to look. it was probably his mom and dad calling each of you to ask where you were, but they could wait.

anything could wait at this moment in time, when vernon was softly running his hands up and down your bare shoulders, long fingertips leaving goosebumps in their wake.

haikyuu rewatch s01e01

i've been itching to rewatch the series lately and a few years ago i did something similar for miraculous ladybug where i wrote up like a stream of consciousness/commentary post and made a gifset for each episode and i wanna try to do it again for haikyuu?? we'll see if i stay committed or not lol—gifsets per ep probably a lot more likely to continue than commentaries tbh, these things are long and not thought out so,

anyway let's start with episode 1, who wants to take bets on how many times i get teary-eyed?

ughhhhh how did i not know IMMEDIATELY my first time watching what a fucking banger of a show this would be. this opening scene is sooo aah. the voice over with the sounds of the balls and shoes, the actual content of the 'a tall tall wall' monologue, and then the visuals of just hinatas shoes stepping up to the line and then 'it was a view i could never see on my own' and the rest of the teams shoes step in??? FUCK

holyyyyy and bc im obsessed i know who is who based on their shoes in that lineup and after thir 'onigaishimasu' and they run onto the court they all run in at different speeds?? and like tanaka goes quick and kageyama bounces on his toes and tsukki is all like unenthusiastic?? what the fuCK bro

no one cares but my japanese is surprisingly better than when i first watched (at which time i knew nothing) and i can actually understand a few bits here and there without the subs

reading the occasional katakana in the background is fun too. mmmm i should try looking at og scans of the manga to see how the sound effects are intended to be read, ive heard the way furudate incorporates the characters into the action as the sound itself is really well done

let me tell you i had relatively low expectations for haikyu my very first time. i just wanted something easy to watch while i ate my lunch during the day, and i thought it would just be a predictable underdog story where hinata gets revenge for middle school. and i wasnt against that, i was relatively entertained this whole episode, then it gets to the end and reveals that kageyama has to be his teammate and i was like OH this is gonna be GOOD good. immediately have me hope and reassurance that the show knew what it was doing and wasnt gonna just be typical cliches etc

Reepicheep & The Wave

I was inspired by this gifset, and I wanted to make my own post just in case the gifmaker (@scottmalloy) wouldn't appreciate a bunch of meta in their notifications 😅

Honestly I think the movie did really well in translating this moment to the screen. The scene in the book grounds you in the perspective of the human characters: Reepicheep disappears over the edge of the wave. This emphasizes that he's going to a beautiful place, but one that the kids aren't able to understand yet. However, the book has the advantage of 3rd person narration. When C.S. Lewis presents the image to his reader, he can give mood and the visuals as one: "[the wave] was a smooth green slope. The coracle went more and more quickly, and beautifully it rushed up the wave's side" (Voyage of the Dawn Treader [VotDT], chapter 16). Lewis can tell us the motion was 'beautiful,' but the movie has to convince us to find it beautiful.

However, the movie has the advantage of being able to take us along with Reepicheep without needing to describe what he's seeing. The water rushing under his boat & towards the screen (4th gif) gives that sense of "more and more quickly...it rushed up the wave," but our ability to empathize with his sweet little Mouse face facial expression (5th gif) is what really solidifies that poignant 'beauty' from the book.

That visual of the Pevensies and Caspian in the background (gifs 4 & 5) achieves the same effect of the book's final image of Reepicheep. There's a feeling of mounting adventure & happiness, and then a moment of quiet wonder when he disappears into a place the reader/viewer can't go. The movie gets this feeling by having the audience rise up the wave with Reep, then come to a slow stop as he passes us by. We see the humans through the spray and realize we're still in their shoes. Meanwhile, the book utilizes the power of 3rd person narration by having Reepicheep slip beyond the reach of the story: "For one split second they saw [the coracle's] shape and Reepicheep's on the very top. Then it vanished, and since that moment no one can truly claim to have seen Reepicheep the Mouse" (VotDT, ch. 16).

In the movie, the mist from the wave, the faint rainbow inside, the vibrant colors of the water, & the image of Reepicheep's smile give us that "moment of quiet wonder" that I mentioned before. Lewis, on the other hand, tells us: "...since that moment no one can truly claim to have seen Reepicheep the Mouse. But my belief is that he came safe to Aslan's country and is alive there to this day" (ch. 16).

PS. The thing that got me excited about this gifset in the first place is the sword in gif 1! This visual appears in the book: "Then [Reepicheep] took off his sword ('I shall need it no more,' he said) and flung it far...Where it fell it stood upright with the hilt above the surface" (ch. 16). The sword-in-the-ground symbol pops up across history and can have various meanings. However, one meaning is that the sword alludes to the Christian cross (✝️). I bet this sword/cross symbol is what Lewis (and the VotDT movie) were referencing. This symbol can be interpreted as a sign of peace, since a sword in the ground is a weapon with its dangerous side 'buried'/set aside.

Again, I like how the movie translates this image. The poignance of this moment in the book comes from the chapter's overall tone. For example, here's a line that precedes Reep throwing the sword: "everything now felt as if it had been fated or had happened before" (ch. 16). Meanwhile, the movie emphasizes the poignance by contrasting Reep's casual discarding of the weapon ("I won't be needing this," gif 1) with the hugeness of the scene overall.

why did you distance yourself from the fandom if you don't mind me asking? miss seeing you here

Hey Anon, that's sweet, thank you. I haven't been active on here at all so it's less distancing myself from any particular fandom as it is being a lot less online in general. The second half of this year in particular has been the craziest, most eventful of my life and so being on here just fell off my radar entirely. The plan was always to return, to answer asks I'm so, so guilty about never getting to, to make the gifsets I wanted to make, to write the essays I wanted to write. That's still the plan, in a way, but I have to be honest and say I have no idea when or if I'll return, certainly not in the capacity I used to be on here in.

I'm hoping to chiller start to 2024 but I think it'd be a shift to put myself back in those fandom shoes and mindset. Don't get me wrong, I still sometimes randomly remember how much I love Santana and how frustrating Glee is when it doesn't live up to its potential. But yeah I've been way too preoccupied with Life to truly get back to that. Mostly in a good way, no one has to worry about me or anything. They say if someone disappears off Tumblr they're either doing really well or really badly. I've had both, but mostly been doing well and making the most of life.

It's crazy to think back on how many hours I used to pour into this blog, into the fandom. I genuinely did love answering asks with elaborate theories and making gifsets, I found that process to be really creatively fulfilling but it took up a lot of my time. The simplest I can put it is that I got a life, haha, and that's not shade at people who are still active. If anything, it's shade directed at myself for being such a full send or no send person who either lives on here or doesn't find the time at all.

I really appreciate everyone on here, people who are still active, people who reach out, people who shout out my old stuff. It's sweet and makes me feel good about the time and effort spent on contributing to the fandom. We'll see what 2024 brings, I am very much deluding myself into thinking I will one day reply to all unanswered asks and such. Hopefully it's not just a delusion.

Honestly, I probably will! I've only put out two fics and one original work so far, so there's a good chance of getting attacked by a fic idea for something else and writing it. Currently I've been back in the Top Gun: Maverick brainrot so it might be that!

5. Which WIP is first on your list to complete this year? Will you post a snippet?

You probably guessed this one but I'm hoping to wrap up Project Jade sometime this year (probably in summer), it's been the one I've been working on for over a year now. Although some shorter fics might happen before that if inspiration strikes. For a snippet, you can have this one from a later chapter:

Her eyes flitted over to the closet door. Inside, underneath her box of winter shoes, lay hidden the files. Had she known how much hell those pieces of paper would raise for them, she never would have opened her mouth in that hallway. Never.

They'd decided keeping the files close and secret was the best plan of action for the moment. They didn't know what else to do but hold on to them and wait until an opportunity to do some real damage presented itself - that's why they were waiting.

That's what Freya kept telling herself, anyways. That's and what she and Oscar had agreed on. But in truth, there was another thing at play. She knew what kind of power those files possessed, and she was scared shitless. They had seen first-hand the ramifications of interfering with the wrong people, and she wanted nothing more than to forget about it all. To stop worrying about who was going to drop dead next. But it couldn't be nearly that simple.

So she closed the notebook, threw a pillow onto the floor next to Oscar with his laptop, and took a seat. "Alright, what now?"

"You're the green chicken," he hurried to explain, pointing at the avatar of a neon green hen with a comically large knife in its beak. "You have the arrows to move, Q for attack, and- Hey, stop laughing! This is deadly serious," he chided, but she couldn't help but crack up too as they locked eyes. As far as distractions went, this would do just fine.

6. Which yet-to-be-started fic is first on your list?

Like I said I've been thinking about Top Gun: Maverick a lot and I've got a pretty detailed idea for a 5+1 fic about Mav and Rooster over the course of the kid's life. More specifically it's five moments when Mav has to parent Bradley after Goose's death and has no idea what he's doing, and then one time when he knows exactly what to do (at the end of the movie, unsurprisingly).

8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?

At some point I'd really love to try writing something more dystopian or apocalyptic (or post-apocalyptic), I adore those kind of settings. I have some vague ideas but nothing concrete yet, and honestly I doubt anything's gonna happen this year cause I already have a big project on my hands. Hopefully sometime in the future though!

13. Aside from fanfic, are there any other fan works you’d like to try creating? Fanart, or fanvids, gifsets, or podfic? 

I occasionally do some drawing and fanart, so I'd love to do more of that if I have time. Learning how to draw people has been a pain in the ass but getting better at drawing characters is the current goal. Gotta do my blorbos justice.

18. Do you typically post multi-chapters as you write, or finish it all and then start posting? Would you like to change your posting method?

I've done one two-parter and one longer multi-chapter thing, and for both I did something in between. I like to have a fair amount written for the whole thing before posting anything, and then I write the missing bits and edit chapter by chapter as I go. It does result in pretty inconsistent posting but I'm a sucker for feedback and wanting to post it helps with motivation, so I'm sticking with it for the moment.

I don’t think it’s so much that he needs them—he was totally fine wearing DMs in S1 (although it’s possible they had lifts inside, you never know. It wouldn’t have been much though because it gets very clunky to wear at some point, and you can also visually tell if they get too high).

Now whether he is tall or short—we just had that discussion elsewhere and went down a rabbit hole 🤣. I’d say his height really mostly matters in the context of the comics, where Dream is regularly referred to as “very tall”.

Perceived height is often relative to who looks at you, and many people are fairly bad at judging it with no reference point. If you’re a 5 foot woman, he’ll look tall to you. I *am* 5’10, and to me, he looks like I’d just edge him out, so I don’t perceive him as tall at all. But if you use an objective measure *and* the info about his height is correct (which it sometimes isn’t for guys in the performing arts—there’s a pervasive tendency in men under 6’0 to aim for that magical number, so you can often take a bit off what you find on paper. Ask me how I know 🤣), he is neither tall nor short for a British guy. Just average. I don’t know, I’d need to see him in person, which I haven’t.

But I did see Jenna Coleman in person, and 5’2 for her definitely seems accurate. Soooo…

The heel she wears here is comparably small (you can see it in several other gifsets on here, also when they’re walking together—their height difference seems fairly accurate and not too distorted by shoes or angles). Since they were so obviously aiming for romance shots/playing on height difference, I don’t think they would have made her wear massive heels in those scenes anyway. It’s the whole point he looks taller than her. And when I’m looking at those in comparison to the height chart, I’m thinking he’s between 5’9 and 5’10. So maybe 5’10 is correct, maybe he’s slightly under. You’d really need to see both with good posture in socks.

With that rabbit-hole-waffle out of the road: The heel is very likely not about height (she says after blabbering about height for an hour 🤣). It’s about style. Comics!Morpheus wears clothes that aren’t just a black coat/robe, jeans and tee. He wears heeled boots in several variations (one pair very famously thigh-high), bitchy suits, scarves, hats, the occasional pop of colour, accessories, and he generally has a thing for running around with his tits out. In short: He’s cunty. I guess it’s the side of Dream that translates to “wet” 🙈

And it seems everyone is just desperately waiting to finally see that side of him. It’s essential to his character (and wet dreams 🤣)…

But why does Tom need the heels?

I saw that bts photo of Dream in that cool fighting stance, and he has those shoes with a bit of a heel.

He's 5'10. That's not short. I mean maybe for a guy...but he's taller than me by 2 inches.

I don't mind it, I just sort of wondered at that.

Ok but I’m rewatching CACW and just… that moment Tony rips Bucky’s arm off like how did I not realize how brutal that must have been for Steve to witness? Like I know it’s not his real arm, but still? Steve was probably already neck-deep in guilt for feeling like he was the reason Bucky lost his real arm after falling from the train after being so close to grabbing onto him, and now, once again, with Bucky mere feet away, he’s unable to protect him from losing a limb again? I’m glad Steve went feral on Tony’s ass after that.

Um hello yes why did no one warn me today is apparently Pain Day™️? 🙃 Fuck, I can't even imagine how excruciating that must've been, both for Bucky - because a) that may not have been his flesh and blood arm but it was still attached to him, and b) he had to relive the trauma of losing his arm - and also for Steve, for the reasons you mention 😭 I can't believe they had to go through that again. They did NOT fucking deserve that.

Also, don't forget Tony blasted Bucky again while he was down

20. favorite emotional moment?

i definitely have to go with robin's coming out scene for this one. there are several other good emotional moments throughout the show, but this one really takes the cake for me because it's just SUCH a good one!!! and it's not very often that we get a gem of a coming out scene like this one, it's just so well done, and i could really go on and on about the scene. PLUS it sort of solidified thee platonic soulmates, like, from this point on they are IT for each other in that sense, yknow? and steve and robin's friendship is truly one of my favorite things about the show.

50. top five absolute fav things about stranger things in general?

ooh hm well i suppose:

the friendships!! there is such a huge focus on friendship in this show and i LOVED that so much. i feel like the show has sort of strayed a little bit from this in the later seasons, but oh man, season 1? that shit HITS, the friendships there are SO good, they're SO strong. like the party? i love that little group of kids!! they're so ride or die already!! they clearly love each other a lot! and then when el and max join the group, they become Part Of The Team too and i love them and i love their specific friendship too! and steve and robin my favorite dynamic duo!!! there is TRULY no other platonic soulmate best friendship out there like theirs, it's something special. and also the kids' friendships with steve (especially dustin!!!) it's SO good!!

the vibes are just so good too. like i was born after the 80s lol but there is still SUCH a sense of nostalgia with this show, again especially in that first season! there's just something about a bunch of kids riding around on bikes fighting monsters that hits different yknow?

steve's character arc!!! steve is probably my favorite character of the whole show and just the way they did his arc is one of my absolute favorite things ever because they did it so WELL. like, asshole popular jock who realizes that he's wrong and realizes that he fucked up and actually puts in the effort to fix what he did and to make things right and to mean it too, that's just SO GOOD. THAT is how you do a redemption arc. i just love steve so much, he deserves his whole entire own bullet point here lol.

i feel like if i give steve a whole entire bullet point for himself i HAVE to give eddie a whole entire bullet point too because that man.... well, he changed the whole entire game. like i've said it before but i was just a casual fan before s4 - watched when new seasons came out, talked with friends about it, but i was not part of the fandom. like i didn't look through the tags, or reblog a whole lot outside of the occasional gifset or smth, and i certianly didn't write or create any of my own content/hcs/etc. but THEE second that eddie munson walked onto that screen he stole my god damn life from me. that guy dragged me over the edge of that boat and right through the watergate with him because once i saw him i was HOOKED and i did not look back. so yeah, it's entirely eddie's fault that i am here today and i adore every single thing about him and what he stands for and who he is and i wont get into it because this post will really never end but i am SO disappointed with what they did with him and how they chose to *end his character arc (*clown shoes are FIRMLY on tho bc i am honk honk fully onboard with the we have not seen the last of eddie munson train soooo lol).

the absolutely incredible fantastic wonderful beautiful amazing inspiring awesome ridiculous epic EVERYTHING that everyone has created in response to this show. i love stranger things, i do, but we all know that there are certain things - characters, relationships, arcs, plotlines, etc. - that have missed the mark, that could have been better, that could have gone a different way. and it is the fans, it is the writers, it is the artists, it is the gif makers, it is the editors, it is EVERYONE who puts their heart and soul into creating for this fandom that fills in those gaps, that fixes things, that takes these characters we know and love and breathes even more life into them, takes them to new places, lets them explore things they deserve to explore. i will forever be grateful to everyone in this fandom because of this!!! it's incredible and it's the best part of the whole show, truly.

saw these (new) tags on an old gifset of mine and this is not me calling op out or getting my feelings hurt or anything i just thought these tags were so funny and wanted to give them some thought bc old interests rear their heads hard sometimes haha

(referring to this 2020 gifset. which i'm going to be honest. do not remember making it. but that doesn't mean much lbr)

but yeah now that i think about it. i really did not do much of anything to improve or even change my gifmaking process from...i would say 2016ish onward? down to continuing to just make gifsets with the same basic style coloring and even in the same "meme/challenge" formats i had been using for years (bc i was losing interest in it oops) (have since pretty much entirely lost interest in it)

also i personally don't think this really looks like a 2013 gifset - file sizes allowed on tumblr were SO LOW and only just starting to get better back then, the trend was extremely saturated, yellowish and having like 30 frames. vibes were generally v different. this has oodles of frames, small text instead of unicode font text, and "pastel coloring," it looks like a 2015 gifset! but that is me being nitpicky

Anyway yes this gifset from 2020 is Very tumblr although in my two-years-ago-defense. people are still actively making gifsets like this. just in smaller numbers bc there are fewer people making gifs on tumblr period but there are soooo many out there. in particular the way people format fonts for gif captions/subtitles has never really changed much. go into the various "[fandom]edit" tags and you will see ahaha.

all a longwinded way to say: someone should do a writeup on Tumblr Graphic Design trends throughout the 2010s-20s bc i personally would love to read it as someone who learned photoshop through tumblr
