BET+ promo budget is exactly 5 dollars which explains why the show only has a bit of buzz around it, but Diarra From Detroit is a great watch, def recommend if you're looking for an engaging dark comedy-mystery series.

i am always accepting asks to natter on about my opinions!

(most of these are not necessarily performances that HAPPENED in 2024 because i am never part of the zeitgeist.)

from movies, i'd say:

conor leach, sequin in a blue room

vladimir onokhov, the whaler boy

arndis hrönn egilsdóttir, the county

karam taher, farha

terrance lau, twilight of the warriors: walled in

interestingly, my favorite movie performances seem to all follow a theme -- perseverance. many of these also require a great detail of tenderness and vulnerability (leach and onokhov navigate first heartbreak beautifully; taher carries nearly the entire movie on her shoulders as she's hiding alone during the palestinian nakba in 1948), and a lot of these are one-man shows. again, karam taher IS the entirety of farha. arndis hrönn egilsdóttir had a lot of echoes of svetlana yancheva's steely, dogged weariness from fear (another of my BOTY performances in years past) and she propels the movement of everyone around her. onokhov in particular blew me away with the subtleties of his non-verbal performance -- leshka is a character who speaks little, but says a TON with his eyes. he and leach are both newbie actors who just knocked it out of the park on their first go-rounds, adding an incredible amount of depth and complexity to their broken boys. and beloved terrance lau may be one part of a sprawling cast, but he's the heart and soul of twilight of the warriors -- cocky, competent, off-kilter, grieving, lost and then determined. he plays shin with such rich emotion he commands the screen whenever he appears.

pearl satjakorn, laws of attraction (leading role in 2025, baybeeeee! but i do want to see him paired with see again bc i loved them so much together)

and since they don't really fit in either category, i have to shout out sybil seely in the buster keaton short one week -- she's game for about as much as buster is, and that's saying something -- and eli rosen in the binding of itzik, which was quite possibly the loveliest 17 minutes i spent all year. i think that one can be found online, and i can't recommend it highly enough.

(honorable mentions to the ensemble casts of wkrp in cincinnati, ham on rye, the invisible fight, and the bingo long traveling all-stars and motor kings. and, of COURSE, literally everyone, including the extras and the walled city itself, in twilight of the warriors.)
