Yellow Rose (2019) dir. Diane Paragas. 7.5/10
I would not recommend this movie to my friends. I would not rewatch this movie.
Elliot is doing his best but is often so awkward and unhelpful. There is so much angst and teenage vibes amidst all these real problems.
I don't feel iike Rose really learned that much or resolved anything really. Her situation was easily made less severe with constant help from random strangers and she always managed to get a room and a job. It's just unrealistic to me. Also, after that happening to my mom, I would not trust any of these strangers.
Lea Solanga omg.
This really took me back to Diane Guerrero's memoir. I'm glad this topic was put into a movie and with Filipino representation as well.

Attention Broadway, HADESTOWN, and country music fans, Eva Noblezada has a feature film debut singing country music
Eva plays an undocumented Filipino American in Texas who gets separated from her mother by ICE agents and copes through country music.
youtube
So as of now, the producers are working through distribution before a wider release. I saw the NY premiere at the Asian American International Film Festival. It is a sweet sad little film.
But seriously, promote this film. It dives into the dehumanization of the immigration crisis and a touch of colorism. It is made by a Filipino filmmaker Diane Paragas, who had real-life involvement with the Filipino Legal Defense Fund and did extensive research on detention centers. Its cast includes Lea Salonga and Princess Punzalan. That’s right, Lea Salonga is playing Noblezada’s aunt. It is a sad movie but it does have a balance of hope and community.
Also, the songs are really good.
Tell your conservative friends and family, “There’s this cool Texas movie about a girl who wants to sing country music.”
Keep track of incoming screenings
