Chapter 7

“Oh, Jerry—” She managed on the edge of a shuddering sob. Everything felt so hopeless. She’d never felt as impossibly far away from him as she did in that moment. “I can’t—I can’t live a life without you.” 

“But you have—for so long,” He said, his voice as soft as a whisper of satin over skin. 

“I think you underestimate the frequency at which you occupied my thoughts over the last seven years.” And it was true. For all that time, Jérome Baynard had been a phantom on the edge of her vision. A friend over her shoulder, just out of view. Perhaps if she turned quickly enough, she might see the edge of his white shirt or the heel of his work boots disappear around a corner. He was a creation of paper and ink and memory—but here he was in flesh and blood. 

This flesh and blood man had fought for her. He’d shown her that her desires were not unholy and tainted. He still yearned for her even if her mind twisted around him like wisteria around a trellis in spring. They were peers in intellect and gorilla critics of literature with the same strange streak. Perhaps someone would come very close one day, but he would never have the history she shared with Jerry. 

He would never be Jerry. 

In her heart of hearts, she knew that she would never meet his like again. Parting from him now would be like tearing her body from her soul. 

Can a wraith make music? 

Can a body without a soul create art that inspires others to tears or joy?

Before this tailspin could drag her beyond the fading light of the sun and into deep water that promised sweet suffocation, he spoke again. “One day, when we are both solitary, old, and weary from longing, let’s find each other again. Perhaps we could be happy together in the few shining years before oblivion.”

Summary: TW! Selfharm! You are upset of how your friends have such amazing lives while yours is terrible. Coming from a bad home, your coping behavior is self harm. Struggling with the idea of wanting to end it all, is Jerry there to save you from doing so.

The chattering died away when Miss Stacy settled everyone down. Specifically Anne who was proclaiming her opinion as loud as she could. Almost standing on the table to declare her words. Diana was tugging at her dress to pull her to sit. – “Miss Cuthbert if you please.” – Miss Stacy said giving her a stern glare. Anne chuckled settling down. Ruby was still whispering to Tillie. With one look of Miss Stacy pressed Ruby her lips together with force. Billy snorting across the classroom at how silly she looked.

Miss Stacy cleared her throat letting his chuckle die. When finally the peace had settled clasped Miss Stacy her hands together. – “I hope you all brought your assignments that I handed out last week.” – she started. Anne who was always eager already set her basket on the table, ready to show it to Miss Stacy. Miss Stacy smiled politely ushering her to wait. – “You may all set it on the table if you please.” – she continued giving the signal.

Everyone ducked down to reach in their baskets to set their work of art on the table. You felt uneasy taking out your artwork. Glancing to the side you saw Charlie’s piece of art. Billy and Paul laughing loud. – “Is that an aardvark?” – Billy joked laughing his ass off. Charlie groaned. – “No! It’s a dog.” – he mumbled setting his hand under his chin, pushing his artwork closer to his chest. Gilbert turned around in his seat looking at Billy’s work.

“Is that a self-portrait?” – he said snarky. Billy mimicked a childish laugh, annoyed by his words. – “Well yeah yours…” – Billy got a bit up to look at Gilbert’s work. Gilbert moved aside on purpose for him to see. – “Well yours… yours…” – Billy said trying to find an insult. Gilbert was smiling beyond himself when Billy couldn’t find something bad to say about it. – “I thought so.” – he said turning back around silencing Billy.

Paul laughed loud at how Gilbert had left Billy speechless. Across back by the girls was Anne proudly showing her masterpiece to everyone. – “Did you do this stitching?” – Diana asked pointing at it. Anne shook her head. – “No, Marilla helped me.” – she then pointed at some paint work. – “This is Matthew’s work, and this weird thing was added by Jerry.” – she finished pointing at a wobbly thing at the top. Diana held her art up. – “My mother helped as well. She painted the flowers.” – she commented.

Ruby got up waving her hand in between them for attention. – “My mother helped too! She did this, this, and this.” – she said pointing at several things in different angles. – “What did you do?” – Tillie replied as it appeared Ruby’s mother did everything herself. – “I did this.” – Ruby answered annoyed pointing at her name written in the corner. Diana rolled her eyes at how silly she was.

Seeing their work you rather wanted to crush it or throw it out of the window. Compared to their, yours seemed like it was made by a child. Also hearing them speak so lovingly about how their parents helped out felt like a punch in your gut. It was something you could only dream off, having a loving mother. Your mother didn’t help in your project. You dared ask her one time. That didn’t end well.

You got yelled at for ruining her moment and annoying her with silliness. Looking at your art again of paper mâché you noticed the dent of where your father had stepped on it. On purpose or accident. It didn’t really much as it had ruined it much. Seeing your friends talk so godly about their parents made you want to cry, pull your hair out and scream your lungs out. Ruby and Tillie turned around to you.

“Let me see yours Y/n.” – Ruby spoke as Diana and Anne looked over them. You pulled it closer to your chest, shaking your head. – “It’s…it’s terrible.” – insisting on it. – “Come show us Y/n.” – Tillie said pulling at your hand. You really didn’t want to show her, finding it unworthy. Ruby helped her to pull your hand away. Tillie then snatched it from you. – “Hey!” – you called out catching the attention of some boys across and Miss Stacy who waited to see where this was going.

Tillie held it up before her looking at it with a questioning brow. – “Did your mother help out?” – Ruby asked probably not meaning anything with it. She was always this innocent and naïve, yet it struck a nerve with you. – “No!” – you called out snatching the art from Tillie back. You then it on the ground setting your foot hard on it. Everyone gasped loud at your little act. – “Y/n!” – Miss Stacy called out concerned. You let your fingers brush automatically over your inner arm, knowing of the scars lingering there.

“Brute.” – one of Billy’s friends called out. Miss Stacy shushing him immediately. Miss Stacy approached you, kneeling gently down to pick up your crushed work of art. – “We can still mend this.” – she said with a warm smile. You shook your head. – “It is broken!” – you answered. Just like yourself. Turning your face away from her, you felt ashamed.

Ashamed and unworthy. Truly wondering what the exact point of you was. Not one of them here knowing a darn thing about your family. They had no idea with their wonderous lives, living like princesses. While you crawled through the gutter with no way out. Consistently surrounded by darkness. The only way out of the sinking was the carving. The marks on your inner arms that helped you coped with it.

Miss Stacy reached up to take your hand. The second she had your hand, you pulled it away. Needing to escape you took a run for it. – “Y/n.” – Miss Stacy called out as some jumped up. Gilbert being one of them. He wanted to run after you as Miss Stacy held him back by his shoulder. – “Let us give her a moment in solitude.” – Miss Stacy said sensing you didn’t want any company at this moment. – “But…” – Gilbert started seeing Miss Stacy shake her head.

He sighed deep, slouching his shoulders. He returned to his seat. Miss Stacy set your artwork on her desk, seeing how sloppy it was once your foot had tackled it. You ran frantically into the woods away from the school. Unable to cope with it. The sugary of your friends biting like sour in your flesh. Their life was something you could never achieve. Not with the home situation you have now.

A mother and father who barely looked at you. A brother who tackled you whenever he pleased. All the workload put on you. Treated like dirt by your own family. Never once said an ‘I love you’ or ‘thank you.’ Maybe this was just how things were meant to be. Unloved. Panting loud you kept running coming into different parts of the woods.

Jerry was whistling loud, carrying a sack over his shoulder. He had come back from the market, making his way back to Green Gables. Something caught his sudden attention as he noticed it was you. – “Y/n!” – Jerry shouted happily waving your way. He frowned when you didn’t seem to see him. Simply running past. Jerry lowered his sack questionable. Why weren’t you at school? Why were you running away? Was everything alright?

Feeling a bit worried he picked up his sack again, going after you. Near a shack crashed you down; out of breath. Leaning against the wood you let your head fall back. Still panting till your breathing steadied. Then the thoughts came. Those dark thoughts that always pushed you to the edge. You already know what to do. Reaching in your pocket, you pulled out a sharp object. Then slowly pulling your sleeves up. Scars of old on your flesh.

Those dark thoughts became louder as it made you bring the tip of the sharpness to your wrist. Tears rolled down your cheek as your hand trembled. It would take one impulsive thought for you to bleed. Bleed till your life would slip away. Why shouldn’t you do it? What good was there in this life? There was no one to pull you out so it was easier to just accept it and be rid of this hell.

Gently setting the tip deeper onto your skin, your sight got blurrier from your tears. – “No!” – you suddenly heard startling you so hard, the tip had pressed deeper into your skin. A single drop of blood forming. Jerry rushed over to you, grabbing the sharp thing from your grip, and throwing it as far away from him. – “Don’t you dare!” – he breathed out.

“Don’t you even think about it!” – he said a bit firmer kneeling down in front of you. Grabbing your shoulders, he pulled you close to his chest for a hug. – “Find hope in the hopeless.” – he told you. – “I don’t know what made you do it, but please don’t. I don’t want to lose you… I don’t.” – he embraced you tighter fighting the urge to cry himself. – “Please Y/n…” – he whispered out as you started crying louder.

In the brink of almost doing it was Jerry there to pull you out. – “We’ll figure it out together. I am fighting for you, and I don’t want you to give up.” – wrapping your arms around him, you hugged back. – “Jerry…” – you cried out. Jerry simply held you, no needing an explanation. Just holding you. In that moment where he knew you needed to be seen, heard and loved.

Best take notice fic ever! Anne and Gilbert get into a take notice board battle and at first, it’s snarky and sarcastic, but then they start complementing each other and it’s beautiful.

Her old archnemesis turned friend turned... nothing.” Anne is bored for the first time in her life and falls down the Instagram rabbit hole. She finds a familiar face.

Anne finds Gilbert’s Instagram and they end up reconnecting at college and then drama ensues. It’s really cute then it gets kinda sad and angsty and then it’s really cute again. I love it.

Summary: Delphine Lacroix raves about Miss Shirley and her crazy lessons. Her uncle Gilbert thinks his niece surely has an overactive imagination, but one day he has to pick her up from school and a certain redhead covered in paint from head to toe crashes into him. OR: Gilbert Blythe puts his foot in it when he meets Anne in every universe. Luckily for him, she didn't have any heavy objects around in this one.

Modern au where Anne is Dellies teacher and Gilbert fall head over heels in love with her. Soooo cute, I love. Also, cue Diana berry being the best roommate ever. 

12.Imagining Something Worthwhile By: remylebae (@remylebub) Rating: T Length: 148k-3l/36

Summary: “Because when you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worthwhile”- Anne of Green Gables. 

Anne is struggling through her mid-twenties, living with her two best friends from high school and starting a new job as an eighth grade English teacher. Just as she's starting to figure this whole teaching thing out, she finds an unexpected someone thrust back into her life.

This is the boy I spent 7 hours reading. It’s a modern au where Anne is a struggling teacher and Gilbert is a struggling med student and they fall back in love. Honestly, the best part of the fic is the best friend relationship between Cole, Anne, and Diana. It’s some pretty wholesome and domestic stuff.

13.You're such a big mess (And I love you) By: gayrefrain (@gayrefrain) Rating: T Length: 6k-1/1

Summary: Anne and Jerry get arrested.

This is one of the first fics I ever read and I loved it so much I read it 2 more times. Modern au where Anne and Jerry get arrested, they bicker like siblings and Gilbert is so worried for her!!! It’s a pre-established relationship and it’s so fluffy and cute ahh. An all-time fave.

Length: 18k-15/15

Summary: Anne Shirley Cuthbert and Gilbert Blythe are next door neighbours, but they despise each other. It didn't used to always be this way, in fact at one time they were best friends. But things change following a personal tragedy for Gilbert, and by high school the two are practically strangers. Anne's life seemed to be going well: she was in charge of organising the school Centennial dance, she was accepted into college, and she was dating one of the most handsome boys in school: Roy Gardner. Only he breaks up with her mere weeks before the dance. When Gilbert's girlfriend Winifred also breaks up with him, Anne comes up with a crazy scheme to get their ex's back: pretend to date to make them jealous. Simple right? If only they don't kill each other first...

Summary: Avonlea, August 1914 – England declares war on Germany. Anne Shirley shows up rain-drenched on Gilbert Blythe’s doorstep and learns her fiancé is due to leave for the Western front in a week’s time.All Anne wanted was to have the memory of a few quiet moments alone with Gilbert. The fact that she would get wet through on the way to his house and have to wear his shirt while waiting for her clothes to dry did not enter into her calculations.

This one is basically an episode of a drama tv show and I’m not complaining.  Anne ends up pregnant with Gilbert’s baby and then he goes to war and they lose touch and he doesn’t know he has a child. It’s a whole thing. It’s mostly angst but reunions are chef's kiss (especially ones when they find out their father). 

17.Trippingly, on the tongue By: meals Rating:G Length: 8k-1/1

Summary: Gilbert goes to Paris, Anne goes to Queens, and years later they both return to Avonlea and meet again. They should be older and wiser, but when neither of ever admits to their mistakes and misunderstandings, will they ever sort themselves out?

Such a good season three “what if” fic. I’ve read it so many times and I can’t get tired of it. 

18.shy daydreams & stardust By: Lil_Redhead (@royalcordelia) Rating: G Length: 16k-3/3

Summary: She can't help how he makes her magic spiral out of control whenever he's around, but maybe she can help him when his own abilities bloom out of nowhere like a lily pad in a teacup. Magic AU!

Anne and Gilbert are both magic and she teaches him about his powers. Very cute!

19.The Post-Exam Ritual of Merriment and Ridiculousness By: wanderinginthewoods  Rating: G Length: 2k-1/1

Summary: Anne, still slightly tipsy, tries to focus as she runs after Gilbert to give him a piece of her mind--but that's not the easiest thing to do when she can barely get her own thoughts in order.

The characterization of Anne drunk is so good and the funniest thing

20.I Belong to You  By: hoddypeak (@shirbertndisney) Rating: T Length: 30k-12/?

Summary: Arranged marriage AU. Anne always wanted to have her own love story, but not one that's decided for her. She doesn't want to fall in love with Gilbert, but after being thrown into many awkward situations with him, the walls around her begin to tumble down. It certainly isn't an easy ride for either of them.

Summary: When Anne agrees to doing Gilbert a favor, she has no idea what she's getting herself into...

A modern fake dating au where Anne and Gilbert are best friends and college roommates that have to pretend to date. Mostly angst so far, but well written. Also, Gilbert seems like a bit of a douche but we will look past that.

Summary: Muggleborn Anne couldn't believe her luck when at 11 she is adopted by the Cuthberts, who introduce her to the world of magic and Hogwarts.Her wild imagination gets her into trouble more often than not, but she doesn't let that stop her. She sparks up an academic rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, and finds a kindred spirit in Diana Barry.However it's not all smooth sailing, with trials and tribulations throughout the years as Anne seeks to discover everything Hogwarts has to offer. It may not always be easy, but life at Hogwarts becomes the greatest adventure of Anne's life.

As a potterhead I am required to put one of the best Harry Potter x AWAE fics on here. Also the only one that (in my opinion) gets the sorting right (gryffindor!Anne, Hufflepuff!Gilbert).

Or, Diana and Anne get coffee, and Gilbert tries his very best to charm Anne with his latte-making skills.

Summary:“Marry me.” Anne drops a plate. She barely reacts to that - Marilla can berate her later, for now Anne has a very good reason to have broken her expensive china. She whirls on him. Gilbert’s not kneeling or anything. He's just standing there, in her kitchen doorway, with a painfully earnest look on his face. “Are you kidding?” She says, laughing nervously. He shakes his head. 

Fun story: I once spent hours looking for this fic and almost started crying when I didn’t think I could find it. So you know it’s good.

He’d been speaking but her blood had roared so loudly in her ears that she hadn’t heard anything that had come before. “What?” 

Huffing through his nose, he stepped across the threshold and closed her bedroom door behind him, bolting it for good measure. Diana’s eyes widened as he moved towards her, her nose a hair’s breadth from his chest. “I asked you to take off your coat—unless you want me to do it for you?” 

How had it come to this? Heart hammering in her ears, Diana blinked once at him, her mouth had gone sandpaper dry as she sucked in a hollow whistling breath. Clumsily, she fumbled at her belt with trembling fingers before Jerry’s hands—all warmth and gentleness—stayed them. 

“S-sorry, I—” 

“Don’t,” he whispered, unfastening her housecoat with steady precision. His hair fell into his dark eyes as he tugged at the knot, pulling her against his body. Gulping another ragged breath, Diana’s heart lept into her throat, her eyes locked onto his parted mouth. The tip of his tongue darted over his bottom lip, making her lean into him, eyes fluttering as she tangled her hands in his coat. “Eager, princess?” 

His admonishment froze her in place and heated her cheeks, but before she could honor this with a sputtered reply, Jerry unraveled her belt with a final tug and parted her coat—sliding it off of her shoulders with warm, heavy hands. She let the silk and velvet pool at her feet.

Hello! It's me, a Ruby stan! I just wanted to write this fic because I'm awfully worried of how Ruby acknowledging Shirbert is going to be conducted. I really do not want Anne and Ruby to end their friendship, so in this Ruby has actually a pivotal role in the situation. Also, I love my girl Ruby so much and I wanted more of her and her story. Thank you for thinking this story is interesting, I promise I'll finish this fic. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: A New Girl

Ruby had turned sixteen a few weeks ago, the last one on her group of friends to her displeasure. It was annoying enough to be the tiniest one, but she was also the youngest, hence she always feeling like a child and the last one to know or understand anything, not to mention that the girl’s teasing of her age and stature sure didn’t help. But now everything was different, she was settled to make things different. She was sixteen, she was a woman and as one she would behave. She made a list of the things she yearned for. Number one? Gilbert Blythe.

As long as she could remember the curly hair boy was always on her mind. She was certain it was love. She was in love with Gilbert Blythe and he... well, he was very polite to her. But she was Ruby Gillis, ‘Romantic - Girl’ as she was proud to say and she didn’t need much to know they were soulmates - “He is just too amiable.” she assured herself “Or maybe I’m a very good pretender and he hasn’t noticed.” but she laughed at the thought of it, one thing she was sure is that she hadn’t been discreet over the years and neither had Josie, he had to be aware of her feelings. “Oblivious much are we Mr. Blythe.” But again, he hadn’t made any kind of courting or heroic action in her behalf since her house caught fire, and this was years ago. “Perhaps, I indeed have been more subtle about it, I’ve been extensively focused on my studies.” She was determined then. She ought to be more straightforward than she had fancied to, if she wanted to marry the man of her dreams.

Monday morning couldn’t arrive sooner. The beautiful sun rays came through the thin curtains as the singing of the birds from the magnolia tree near her window woke her. “Oh, how romantic.” she thought to herself, it was indeed the perfect day to make Gilbert Blythe fall in love with her.

She was usually accompanied to school by Jane and Tillie and sometimes Billy would walk with them as he had to make the same path as his sister. But today her only companion was a little cream coloured rabbit that followed her for some of the path. She took that as a symbol of good luck, that everything was going to play out just as she needed them to.

When she arrived at school none of her friends had arrived yet and there were only some boys playing fetch by the side of the building, so she made her way into the school where He was already there, in the front of the class, by his study corner. The sight of him filled her with delight, he was indeed so handsome with his nose buried in a book as he was doing anything else. This was her chance, she would be her most adorable and interesting self he wouldn’t know what hit him. As she was making her way to the front of the classroom Miss Stacy entered the room “Oh good, you’re here. Miss Gillis, can I speak with you for a moment?” “Oh no, gone opportunity.” As she approached her teacher Miss Stacy began talking with a concerned smile in her face “Ruby, I know how hard you’ve been working on to get into Queen’s Academy, however I’m afraid with your recent scores in biology it won’t be enough to pass.” Ruby’s eyes began to water up and with a distraught voice she replied “Oh no, Miss Stacy, oh no, that’s all I’ve ever wanted. I - I can’t just be a wife I have more qualities than that.” as she started sobbing her teacher put her hand on her shoulder in a comforting manner and said “Ruby, calm down, you’ve been excelling in every other subject, we just have to work harder in this one, that’s why Gilbert here will tutor you for the next month or so.” As she looked up, cleaning her tears she asked in a tone of surprise and confusion “Gilbert -” but before she could continue he was standing next to Miss Stacy and interrupted her “Yeah, Ruby. Miss Stacy thinks it’s going to be a good practice for me and I’m glad to help.” Oh, she couldn’t be any more content. Alone time with the love of her life? With his help she’d surely get into College, oh just the thought of them falling in love between study time and going to Queen’s together and getting married- “Ruby?” with the call of her name she realized she hadn’t responded to the situation. “I’m sorry, what?” and Gilbert started speaking again “Miss Stacy said we can use the room after class, with the others who are also going to be tutored, does that work for you?” “Yes. Yes, it does. Perfectly.” “Okay, how about every Tuesday and Thursday?” and with a little pitched noise she agreed to it, he just nodded at her while going back to his book. Sometimes she really could make a fool of herself.

Queen’s Academy assessment was in less than two months and all of those who were taking the test were starting to get nervous.Only a few of her classmates applied to do the exam. Which was good, less competition, but the folks in Charlottetown worried her. They were definitely a threat. She sure was thankful she had had Anne to help her and now she had Gilbert.

Anne Shirley Cuthbert really changed Ruby’s life. Before she befriended Anne her life options were dictated by her family interests, just like her sisters, she should marry for love, but he ought to be a rich lover. How foolish does this thought seemed to her now, of course she wanted to get married in the most romantic way, even more, if she dared to say. Specially since Anne explained to her the concepts of “life mates” and “a love bond”. She knew that that’s what she wanted, and she was glad for Anne, because before it such ideas as to become more than just a lovely doting wife had never crossed her mind. She felt robbed. How could she ever think of missing out in this great adventure; Spending the rest of her life with the man who would be her equal partner and neither of them were to renounce of their wishes. It couldn’t be any more romantic.

Anne gave Ruby a new perspective in life, and she was going to take full advantage of this new her. She was very proud to say she was going to be the first woman of her family to attend college, although it took some convincing on her mother’s side, but surprisingly enough her father couldn’t be anymore thrilled. “Finally! One of you girls have a better purpose in life.” she remembered him saying when she decided to ask for his permission. “Oh! don’t misunderstand me, my child, I love your sisters with all my heart and your mother. But now that we have only you in the house, I can see how sometimes she turns blue, almost spiritless. And I dare to think I failed her, had she not be so preoccupied with my needs and I’m afraid your sisters are all in the same path of emptiness.” Hearing her father be so vulnerable in that moment took her aback, he had always been a very caring father, how could he not, having five girls in the house and he was a good husband, how could he think such things. “Father, don’t be so harsh on yourself. Mother is far from unhappy and she certainly doesn’t regret this life. After all, she has everything she ever longed for.” she said, hoping it would ease her father’s mind. “Don’t worry yourself child, because you, you my darling daughter, will be different. You will have a career to fulfill you besides having a devoted husband and your many children.” She was glad her father was so supportive of her intentions, she wouldn’t know what to do if her wishes were to be denied.

Also if it wasn’t for Anne she could have never be among the best of the class. Not that Ms. Stacy controlled either instigated that type of behaviour, but they sure did. Of course Anne and Gilbert were always tied together at first, the years passed but their strife never stopped. Next there was Jane Andrews, who was truly set on making the new Andrews stance of educated wives swell. She was indeed focused on that, as she had skipped a year and now were in the same class as Ruby. Right after there was Diana Barry, who was excelling in every subject, even though her parents frowned upon her wishes to attend college. And in contrasting to Diana, there was Josie Pye who had to attend Queen’s, as her mother wouldn’t have any other way, and Josie definitely wasn’t going to disappoint. She and Ruby even studied together from time to time.

And as of Ruby, since last year she had proudly stolen Charlie Sloane’s spot. How dissatisfied he was with this new arrangement. He had gotten used to the glory of being the second most intelligent boy in class. So when Ruby started to best him in every subject, even excel in most of them, their classmates made it noticeable that he wasn’t that intelligent after all. Which for her, it actually didn’t make any sense, he was still the second best boy in class, she was just equalizing to it. In reality, she thought that kind of comparison to be cruel on her behalf, as if everybody just thought of her as pretty, nothing else. That’s why when Charlie started trying to reclaim his position she was mostly fierce of showing everyone she was just as good, no, she was better and definitely not just ‘pretty’.

First it was actually annoying. He was always challenging her, and he just had to be the last one to speak, but as she accepted the situation and was decisive to win it now, it had turned out to be an academic rivalry, a healthy one, she supposed; She really thought he would just give up, but it had been months and he sure was keen on getting his spot back. It was starting to bother her, he was just too persistent and impolite, he drove her up the wall. She even nicknamed him as ‘Charlie Sloathe’ as just of how much he annoyed her. But she wouldn’t back down and, afterall, if he aspired to become a doctor and enter Queen’s Academy he would just have to work harder, just as she had been doing, orelse he did not earned to be one. But nonetheless, their rivalry enticed her, despite loathsome-ing him most of the time, but it was one more reason to keep her focused on her goals.

The Christmas of 1906 brings her across the Atlantic to see her family and attend a friend’s Christmas party. Almost immediately upon her arrival to Green Gables, her parents throw suitor after suitor at her in the hopes that she will like one and settle down—forsaking her newfound career and freedom.
