Tag Game: OC Name Origins
thank you to @phoenixradiant for the tag! This looks super interesting!
Rules: Go through a few of your characters and explain the origins behind their names and personalities, and if the two are related.
I'll do this for the peeps in The Legend of Orian Goldeneye!
Jasper "Jas" Katherine
I wanted her to have the initials "J.K", and I chose Jasper because the mineral/gemstone is typically red, like her hair. The nickname came about because I liked how it sounded as compared to her full name. As associated with the color red, she is really passionate and emotional, tending to lash out and solve problems with violence rather than logic.
Killian Cory
The name "Killian" in Gaelic means "war", "contention", and "strife". It also means "blind" in Latin. I thought it was fitting due to him being blind to his past, which he suspects was full of contention and strife. His present isn't much better. As a stark opposition to his name meaning, he tends to be a peacemaker and diplomatic, if a bit on the reserved side.
Orian Goldeneye
Orian's name I kinda just made up, a creative misspelling of Orion the constellation and figure of myth. Appropriate since he is in essence a myth on Somnia. Goldeneye is more of a title than a last name, referring to the unusual color of his eyes.
Diana Ozborne
Fun fact about Diana, in the original draft of TLoOG, she was a very different character and underwent a lot of changes before the rewrite. For one thing she was a man, his name was Ozborne L'Sang, and he wasn't a bard. The role is still very similar, but the vibes were off for the rewrite when I was plotting so I switched some things around. I kept the last name Ozborne and chose the name Diana as the first name because I liked it. Ozborne is a creative misspelling of Osborne/Osborn which means "bear god", and I consider both versions of Ozborne to be incredibly protective of their charges as a mother bear is with her cubs.
Henrik Bronze
I mostly picked "Henrik" because it sounded medieval-ish enough for the setting, Henrik is a character unique to the rewrite, he never appeared in the first draft. The name does mean "ruler of the house" which as a strict and stern garrison captain is somewhat fitting. The last name Bronze is in reference to the alloy and keeps with the theme of Somnians having metal/mineral-related names or last names.
Azura Lazuli
"Azura" is derived from the word "azure" meaning blue, it's fitting because she has a blue color scheme. Despite the associations of the color blue being with calmness and serenity, she's as much of a hothead as Jas. "Lazuli" is in reference to the gemstone, obviously, and keeps with the theme, it is also blue.
Morpheus
Named after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. As the first dreamshaper and mentor to Orian, I find it incredibly fitting.

Well Jas obviously goes by Jas. Her full name is Jasper, she doesn't hate it but she prefers the nickname. Unless she doesn't like you and revokes 'Jas privileges'.
Diana answers to Oz, a shortening of her last name. It's really more of a code name than anything, and she's Diana among friends and Oz among smuggling colleagues.
As their relationship progresses Jas sometimes calls Killian 'Kil'.
And finally Hiel's birth name is not Hiel, he changed his name along with his Ice Mage friend Iska after they were revealed to be Mages, both to hide and to separate themselves from their old lives.
which oc does not go by their birth name? do they still use it for some occasions or not at all? how do they feel when they hear their birth name?

17 from this ask game?
Tumblr media
Spinning the Wheel... the Wheel chose Diana!
17. Who are they soft for? Do they find being soft easy or difficult?
Diana is definitely soft for Orian, and has a sort of maternal relationship with him despite the slight communication barrier of him existing solely in the dream and her not being a dreamshaper. She also acts vaguely maternal towards Jas and Killian, but not to the same extent.
She's a very kind person, being soft comes easy for her, but she won't hesitate to be stern or to fight for what she believes in.
41. Your character has been punched into the face. What's their reaction?
Pained shock and surprise, followed immediately by swift retaliation. Her staff isn't just for show, of course, but she won't cause any more pain than her attacker did to her.

Tag Game: OC Interaction (Round 3!)
thanks to @illarian-rambling for the tag!
Rules: Provide a short description of your OC, then using the description given by the person who tagged you, describe how you think the two of them would interact.
Tagger's OC: Djek Kagura is a young man (19 in the first book, 23 in the second two) with a shifty appearance, red eyes, and a constant squint due to poor vision. He grew up on the streets after his parents tossed him out to cut down on mouths to feed, only to later join the brutal Tunnel Wasp smuggling gang, which he later split from due to his aversion to violence and need to do what's right. As a person, he's always quick with a joke or snide comment, loves sarcasm, and lies like a fish breathes water. His bad habit is that he loves to annoy people on purpose. At his core is a deep sense of self-loathing and abandonment issues, but he covers these with humor. He tends to try to find peaceful solutions to situations and has a bit of a bleeding heart, even if he pretends to be tough. His friends mean the world to him and he's loyal to the point getting himself hurt in fights he can't win. Also, he's surprisingly in touch with people's emotions and always trys to make them feel better, even he does it with a bad joke or by irritating them to action. He has a weak form of sorcery, specializes in shadow magic, and has incorrigibly sticky fingers.
My OC: Diana Ozborne (as chosen by The Wheel) is a woman in her late thirties with red hair, freckles and heterochromia. She primarily makes her living as a musician, playing in taverns and street performing using a wooden flute and her voice. She is also a smuggler and spy, working with dreamshapers to dismantle an unfair societal system. She knows Saint's Shoal like the inner workings of a lock, and can navigate its winding streets like no other. She is incredibly kind despite a lot of trauma in her past, and will not stand for any sort of injustice. She has a vaguely maternal attitude towards Orian Goldeneye, who she sees as having suffered a terrible injustice when his predecessor abandoned him. Diana fights with a bo staff and avoids dealing killing blows. Between her various skills she is a force to be reckoned with on her chosen path.
How I think they'd interact: As a pair of people who toe the line between neutral good and chaotic good (from what I'm getting from the description of Djek at least), no one would be safe. They'd be an unstoppable vigilante/thieving/smuggling duo working to dismantle the system. Diana would also see this traumatized younger person and be like "Is anyone gonna adopt that? No? Okay, I'll do it myself."

Tag Game: Character Headcanon Generator
Thank you to @paeliae-occasionally for the tag!
Rules: use this headcanon generator for your ocs and rate how accurate it is.
Last time I did this with the Tales from Valaria/Magician's Bait casts, so today I'll go with The Legend of Orian Goldeneye!
Jas hacks her stats in every video game they play.
0/10 she'd rather get good at the game then cheat.
Killian is not good with social cues.
4/10 he can be oblivious at times but he is incredibly observant and diplomatic
Orian has a diary that he writes in with a glittery gel pen.
7/10 he signs notes with an embossed eye he would
Diana killed Princess Diana.
JDJSJXKSNDKDKKDKS This is the funniest possible headcanon for this character. 0/10 not accurate but 1000/10 for making me laugh
Henrik has a very low alcohol tolerance.
Ehhh 3/10 he doesn't drink so maybe it's true but we'll never find out
Azura wakes up on November 1st and starts decorating for Christmas.
0/10 She wouldn't celebrate Christmas

🧁 – What's the sweetest moment you've written using one of your OCs?
🍲 – What's your OCs comfort food?
🎂 – How do your OCs celebrate birthdays? (either their own or someone else)
(in response to this ask game)
🧁 – What's the sweetest moment you've written using one of your OCs?
I think it might be the hurt/comfort moments between Whumpee!Killian and Caretaker!Jas such as in The Dangers of Jumping or the poison ficlet. Orian and Diana's first meeting is up there too, and maybe in The Hunter, the Myth and the Cure where Octavian is treating Reese's wounds. I love writing those little moments with characters bonding while treating each other's wounds.
🍲 – What's your OCs comfort food?
Spun the Wheel and got Reese! Her comfort food is chocolate, but she also really likes coffee, especially around the time when Magician's Bait takes place. Chocolate + coffee? Over the moon.
🎂 – How do your OCs celebrate birthdays? (either their own or someone else)
I'll answer this one for Reese as well. Sweet treats are traditional in Valarian human celebrations, and birthdays are no exception! She always requested everything to be chocolate (with a few nonchocolate dishes in case someone didn't like it/was allergic). Her family also sang elven songs celebrating life, which isn't traditional in any way but her parents started doing it because her father learned the songs as a diplomat and her mother liked them so much they did it anyway. Birthdays were always a happy time of camaraderie and friendship for Reese, and even as she grew up it never changed for her (one of the few things that stayed the same). She clings to that familiarity with the desperation of someone holding the edge of a cliff, dangling over the abyss.

First Meeting
Whumpril Day 20 (Touch starved)
Whumpril Prompts List
The Legend of Orian Goldeneye Masterpost
TW: mentioned sickness, guilt, mentioned oppression
Summary: It had been a couple weeks since Diana made herself at home at the old shrine. So it was only a matter of time before its other occupant reached out. (pre canon)
First contact happened the night Diana decided against going out to play for the nearby inn. Those nights she stayed well past midnight, when most of the patrons had made their drunken leave, and the rest were so intoxicated that they wouldn’t notice that the performer had departed.
She hadn’t been feeling too well the past few days, so the decision to stay in and rest wasn’t hard to make. Of course, she spent much of the evening practicing some new pieces and working on one of her own. It was rare she got the time and energy to play just for herself, and a few motifs had been bouncing around in her head for days now.
The sun had set long ago, and Diana was playing through her newly finished piece when something touched her shoulder.
She jumped, nearly dropping her flute, and glanced around. The room, one of the many cells that had belonged to one of the monks back when the shrine still had visitors, was empty. No one else was around but her. She slowly touched the spot where the hand had been. It had been like a hand, lighter than air, had rested on her shoulder, not imparting warmth but instead a strange chill.
Diana frowned and dropped her hand. Slowly, waiting for a repeat of the sensation, she lifted the flute to her lips and started playing again, going a couple measures back. The sixteenth-note run in this section sounded wonderful when she could play it correctly. Of course, she thought to herself as she stumbled through the notes, it isn’t likely that I’ll ever play this for anyone but myself.
Diana made it through the rest of the piece without further interruption. She exhaled slowly, looking over the notes. That sixteenth-note run for sure needs work, and maybe the octave jump towards the end. Other than that, it sounds okay. Not perfect. Far from perfect. But with a bit more practice, she might have the confidence to perform it.
Not that anyone would want to hear it. The audiences at the inn only ever wanted the songs they already knew. Perhaps she could play her new ones when street performing? She sighed and set aside her flute, scooting back on the cot she was seated on to rest her head against the stone wall.
She needed this night off.
So why did she feel so guilty?
Diana closed her eyes and listened to the faint sounds of Saint’s Shoal at night, muffled through the thick glass pane of the window. It was so different from Iron Hollow, where everyone hid behind walls of black glass when the sun went down. Dreamshapers enforced the curfew with merciless brutality, and few were out late as a result.
Little money to be made, in a place like that.
Diana didn’t regret moving on after only a few days, though the way her sparse audiences had reacted to her music made her feel a slight amount of guilt for leaving. She might have been the first bard to visit in years, the way they were almost desperate to listen, but most had been too terrified to risk going out to see her.
Perhaps if she had stayed….
Fingers brushed against her wrist. Diana flinched, eyes flying open, and she was reaching across the cot for her staff before she realized no one was there. She blinked, staring into the space where a person would have been. The first time could have been her imagination, but a second?
“I know you’re there,” she said softly, moving away from where her staff leaned against the wall next to the cot. “What do you want?”
Invisible hands seized her wrists, and Diana’s vision blurred as she was yanked into the dream world by… a teenager?
She slumped, overcome by dizziness. “Ugh,” she mumbled, pressing her fingers to the sides of her head, “that feels so weird.” When the sensation passed, she took a deep breath and studied the boy before her.
He couldn’t have been older than fourteen or fifteen, with curly black hair, round glasses, and a dark cloak that flowed like a waterfall down to the floor, with molten drops of gold swirling within liquid darkness. But the detail that told Diana that she wasn’t dealing with just any dreamshaper was the intense color of the teen’s eyes, a bright glimmering yellow to match the accents on his cloak.
“Hello,” Orian Goldeneye said softly. His arms were folded, and he regarded Diana with curiosity and wariness. “I want to know what you are doing here. This shrine hasn’t been used in years.”
“Waiting."
He raised his eyebrows. “‘Waiting’? Waiting for what?”
“You.”
“You waited. For two weeks. For me.”
Diana shrugged. “Yes.”
“...why?”
If Diana was being somewhat honest with herself, the ‘why’ didn’t make all that much sense. If she was being completely honest with herself, she’d chosen this shrine in particular because it was secluded and abandoned. She inhaled slowly and released the breath. “How long have you been the child of balance?”
Orian blinked. “I…” He frowned, thinking. “I don’t know. I’ve lost track.”
“Do you have anyone to assist you? Dreamshapers, non-dreamshapers, Morpheus himself?”
“No…”
Diana slowly rose to her feet and stuck out her hand. “Diana Ozborne. Musician, storyteller, occasional smuggler. I’m here to help you where the dream world can’t.”
He stared at it. “And you’re doing this… why?”
She smiled. “Because there’s no one else who will.” She’d heard stories as a small child, stories of how Orian had come into his position as Morpheus Dreamshaper’s successor. Even then, Diana had always thought the circumstances had been twisted against Orian, forced to make a decision in a place of desperation. And then Morpheus just… left.
“Why… why are you doing this?” Orian stammered, shrinking back, “what do you have to gain from this?”
Diana opened her mouth to say ‘nothing’, but reconsidered before the words left her lips. Technically, she gained a home by staying here, in this old shrine. Sure, it wasn’t most people’s idea of a home, but Diana’s expectations had been rather skewed from her years of traveling on the road. “A purpose,” she finally said.
Not that music and storytelling weren’t already her calling. But she sensed that her response was an answer someone like him would accept.
Orian stared at her, unblinking, for a long few moments. Finally, he reached out and clasped her hand. His hand almost didn’t feel real, like it didn’t have any more substance than the shadows of his cloak. His eyes widened in surprise.
“What is it?” Diana asked.
He quickly withdrew his hand. “Nothing… it’s nothing. I… I don’t really know… what to do with someone like you….”
“I can get past black glass. I can teach you lockpicking for anti-dreamshaper locks. I have many favors I can call in.” Diana chuckled at the bewildered look on his face. “I did say I was an occasional smuggler.”
“...you can teach me lockpicking?”
“Of course!” Diana reached for her bag and withdrew a rolled oilcloth and a practice lock. “Come over here and I’ll show you. Now, the first thing anyone needs to know about lockpicking is the different types of tools….”

My OC's in the Knights Radiant Quiz
@illarian-rambling did this thing recently where she took the Knights Radiant Quiz for her ocs. Thought it was cool so I'm doing it too lol.
The Legend of Orian Goldeneye:
Jas: Willshaper (81%). Considering what her motives are in the story, this tracks nicely. Killian: Skybreaker (78%). I feel he'd be more of an ancient order Skybreaker, operating within his own moral code with an understanding of how rules are imperfect. Orian: Edgedancer (77%). It kind of fits his personality, and he would love to slide around. Henrik: Skybreaker (74%) and Stoneward (74%). Man was born to be a Skybreaker, he's a garrison captain after all. Stoneward also fits him, as a soldier. Diana: Lightweaver (74%). She is a musician, her morals can be questionable, and she disagrees with Henrik about many things. Azura: Lightweaver (57%) and Elsecaller (57%). She is very much into the subterfuge aspect of the Lightweavers. She's also decent at tactics, a theme of the Elsecallers, and dreamshaping is somewhat similar to moving through Shadesmar. Morpheus: Elsecaller (63%). Very similar to Azura, but he's much more on the cautious side.
Tales from Valaria:
Octavian: Windrunner (77%). Like me! And it also fits his role in The Watcher and the Thief, though by the time The Hunter the Myth and the Cure comes around it's changed drastically. Draven: Willshaper (73%). He does what he wants, doesn't really care for rules but he does have his own moral code. Reese: Lightweaver (62%). I'm not too sure about this one, mostly because her morals align closer to a Willshaper or Edgedancer in my opinion. But she does tend to hide her true self from others. Luc: Windrunner (78%). Fits his morals and his job, he's quite protective. Hector: Windrunner (79%). Same as Luc, makes sense since he's Luc's mentor, but I'd say Luc has a little bit more Skybreaker in him than Hector. Damian: Edgedancer (70%). Bodes well for Caenum to have a heir that cares for his people. He was also willing to give up his freedom if it meant his captor didn't get what she wants, so he's fairly selfless. Kaira: Lightweaver (57%) (Also -20% for Bondsmith apparantly???). She's very good at deception, but that's the only thing that would be Lightweaver about her. Personally I think she'd be a better Elsecaller, due to her search for power. Rift: Elsecaller (54%). I don't know how he got this one, he has average wisdom and intelligence is his dump stat. But he would definitely make good use of Shadesmar (for "borrowing" purposes).
(Forsaken: The Doomed City):
Rowan: Elsecaller (74%). Makes sense, he's fairly cautious, he's the leader of the group (not very good at it), and he's willing to do anything to get what he wants. Victoria: Windrunner (63%). She definitely likes working in a team, and is really attached to and protective of those she cares about, to the point where she'd do anything to save them. Ollie: Truthwatcher (81%). Considering their powers make him a great spy, fueled by his natural curiosity, this fits. Sam: Stoneward (61%). She's the group's tank, the most reliable out of all of them, and fairly optimistic. Whisper: Elsecaller (70%). What is with my villains and getting Elsecaller? Is it because they all seem to be selfish bastards who do anything for what they want? (Nevertheless this does fit him).

🍕 – Would your OC like junk food?
(in response to this ask game)
The Wheel chose Henrik, which is honestly kinda funny to me because he's the type to either be neutral about it or avoid it entirely. He'd indulge once every full moon, and the garrison members would constantly joke about the junk food he chooses. Think snacks from foreign countries.
There's a running bet about if he gets the snacks from Ozborne and that's why the smuggler hasn't been caught yet.

Tag Game: Personality Through Quotes
Thank you to @phoenixradiant for the tag here and @somethingclevermahogony for the tag here!
Rules: have your OCs respond to a given prompt then give the people you tagged a prompt
I will be answering these for the cast of The Legend of Orian Goldeneye.
Fen's Prompt: A quote about truth.
Jas: I used to think I knew what the truth was. And it had nothing to do with colorful portals kidnapping me to a completely different world! I used to think magic was a lie told by fairytales to children for entertainment or teaching purposes, but nope! It's real, and people with it have tried to kill me! So now my perception of what I thought the truth was has been completely shattered, and I must know more. Killian: I suppose the truth is what I'm currently seeking. The truth about who I was, before... *waves vaguely at head* I don't know where to start, I'm really just hoping that my past will pop up eventually. *mumbles* as long as it doesn't get me killed, that is. Orian: ... It's weird. I remember being raised with the great virtues, truth-telling being one of them. It was so long ago I barely remember any of that, it was before... before I... before I learned I was a dreamshaper. But since then... nobody who I can actually talk to really cares about the virtues in the same way. Diana comes close, but she... well, she's a smuggler. Diana: Truth... well, truth is flexible. It is one of the great virtues, but it is a tool. It can hurt, it can heal, but it all relies on the one wielding it---or standing against it. I twist the truth daily, if I didn't, I'd have gotten imprisoned long ago. And if that happened, then all the good I've done---smuggling food and medicine, sheltering innocents, and so on---would not have occurred. Henrik: *mutters* ugh, I'm not good with these heartfelt things. The truth is harsh. It hurts sometimes. But it's necessary, and without it the world would be chaos. Azura: Truth is something many people, especially prominent people, seem to have discarded. They ignore the injustices happening in front of their very eyes, because to acknowledge it shatters their version of what the truth should be. People like that deserve to be punished for their wrongdoings.
C's Prompt: You're completely lost in [insert location].
I chose Saint's Shoal, where the majority of the story takes place. It is canonically confusing to navigate.
Jas: *realizes she's lost* *turns around in a full circle* Well... shit. Just when I thought I was getting used to this maze of a city! Killian: *pulls out map* *stares at map* I have no clue where we are. *glances around* *sighs* I guess just pick a direction and start walking? Orian: If only I could figure out how to bend space like Morpheus... *spends like an hour trying before giving up and wandering around* Diana: Huh. I don't think I've ever gotten so turned around before! *sees passerby* Hey, could you give me directions? Oh, you don't know how to get there from here? That's okay! I'll figure it out, have a great day! *mutters to herself* Let's see, I think I recognize that street name, let's see if I can use that to figure out where I need to go.... Henrik: ...dammit. I've lived here too long to be getting lost like this! Azura: *muttering* this is why I live in Iron Hollow. At least that city was planned by a competent architect. Whoever designed this city was clearly drunk out of their wits.
