Also known as: May Eve

The origins of the holiday date back to pagan celebrations of fertility rites & the coming of spring. After the Norse were Christianized, the pagan celebration became combined with the legend of St. Walburga, an English-born nun who lived at Heidenheim monastery in Germany & later became the abbess there. Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling "pest, rabies, & whooping cough as well as against witchcraft". Christians prayed to God through the intercession of Saint Walpurga in order to protect themselves from witchcraft, as Saint Walpurga was successful in converting the local populace to Christianity. Although it is likely that the date of her canonization is purely coincidental to the date of the pagan celebrations of spring, people were able to celebrate both events under church law without fear of reprisal.

Walpurgis Night is still a traditional holiday celebrated on April 30th in northern Europe & Scandinavia. In Sweden typical holiday activities include the singing of traditional spring folk songs & the lighting of bonfires. In Germany the holiday is celebrated by dressing in costumes, playing pranks on people & creating loud noises meant to keep evil at bay. Many people also hang blessed sprigs of foliage from houses & barns to ward off evil spirits, or they leave pieces of bread spread with butter & honey, called ankenschnitt, as offerings for phantom hounds.

Exceptional metalloids this section overviews several common metals and metal-like materials used in the crafting of magic items for their supernormal traits.

Mithral also known as Starmetal, Mithral is a metal formed from the transmutation of iron and silicate-rich asteroids/meteors during atmospheric reentry. in short, the metal is formed by falling stars. Mithral typically has a light and mostly matte coloration, with exceptionally high-quality mithral luminescing for a long period if previously left in light. Mithral is known for having very little weight, incredible flexibility and strength, and moderate hardness. Mithral's tensile strength significantly outpaces its shear strength, but it is strong in both regards.

Adamantine Also known as Dragonmetal, Adamantine is a metal formed from excess mana shed by a high-class/"Greater" dragon- note that common wyrms and drakes do not produce adamantine. Adamantine is very shiny and glossy, but does not reflect much light. Admantine has the highest hardness among all mortal materials, well outpacing even diamond. in addition, pure adamantine blocks almost perfectly 100% of magic passed through it, meaning adamantine is useful for diverting or redirecting mana, as it does not allow mana to pass through. it has been proven that internal adamantine structure can greatly empower differing elements of a magical item, given that it can restrict the loss of mana in a system due to entropy.

Greenmetal Greenmetal is a type of steel that is specifically infused with natural life energy during creation. primary sources of greenmetal include several varieties of refinement plants, including Pure Daisies. as the name suggests, greenmetal is almost always some shade of green. it's strength is slightly better than common steel, but it serves as a very high-efficiency mana conductor, though it does convert non-natural mana(aka arcane mana) into natural mana as it conducts it.

Dragonsteel Dragonsteel is a high-quality steel type forged from the bones and blood of dragons. the entire process is not covered in this book, but the process involves using dragon bones as a source of carbon for the steel and quenching the steel in dragon blood. common dragonsteel is of worse quality than almost all adamantine-mithral alloys, but considerably more easy to acquire. the quality of dragonsteel can be improved by acquiring the dragon parts from older dragons, from less variety of dragons, and/or from more willing dragons, with all manners of quality improvement being stackable. a theoreticallty perfect dragonsteel would involve a single extraordinarily ancient dragon intentionally donating its blood and bones to the project.

Magical metals this section reiterates several common metals that interact interestingly with mana.

Lead lead is known to absorb mana, primarily divination-based mana. while enough to stand up to common divination on its own, lead can be alloyed with adamantine to form lead-adamantine alloy(aka Blackmetal or Blackrose metal) which, if properly made, can prevent even true divinity from scrying or any similar action.

Aluminum Aluminum is refractive to mana, similar to how shaped glass is refractive to light. aluminum can be used to split mana from high-theme mana to pure/unthemed mana. (see chapter 8 for an explanation of mana thematicity) this can sometimes be useful for decomposing or analysing spells, as well as identification spells(common Wands of Identify typically have aluminum tips for this very reason)

Titanium Titanium is reflective to mana, able to reflect 120 mega-shandars per liter per second. it does not typically alter the composition of the reflected mana, only the direction. titanium is thus used in magic redirecting and deflecting items. the most used alloy of titanium in mana is titanium-mithral composite, which is usually used to focus mana from wide-range mana emission to laser mana emission.
