I definitely ship you with Sirius and James. However, Sirius was the first one to notice you. It all started during Christmas when you received a package from your Muggle family. It contained yet another record for your collection – the Diamond Dogs deluxe edition by David Bowie. You were instantlly excited by it, and youre excitment could be percived by others.

Sirius, allthought unfamiliar with the album, instantly recognized Bowie on the cover so he approached you with a playful grin, “Hey sweets, you’re in my Transfiguration class, aren’t you?”

You nodded, “You’re Sirius Black.”

He smiled, glad that you recognized him too, and casually sat next to you, leaning his head on his hand as he looked at you. Initially, you found it a bit strange how comfortable he seemed around you, but his relaxed aura eventually put you at ease.

He shared how he had stayed at school during Christmas to help his friend with some tasks, and how he didn’t really want to go home because of his less-than-pleasant family. You told him about your Muggle family and how they believed it was best for you to stay at school to avoid the Death Eaters. You admitted missing your family and being happy to receive a letter from them.

When the conversation grew somber, he skillfully changed the topic and asked about your album. Excitedly, you shared details about your collection and music preferences. He told you about the cassettes he had received from his cousin Andromeda and promised to make you a mixtape someday. He enjoyed making them for his friends. Your bond only strengthened from that point, and Sirius developed a massive crush on you, growing every time he discovered something new about you. He thought you were absolutely magical, and that, without even thinking about the fact that you were quite literally a witch. 

One day, you were in Sirius' room listening to your records since you didn't want to disturb your roommates. James Potter entered, not noticing you both resting on the floor with your backs against the bed. Assuming he was alone, he started humming along to your favorite song. James was so distressed at that point the only thing you could think to do to ease the tension was to smile at him and say “Wanna join us?” 

You weren’t sure you’d ever seen a shy James Potter in your life, but here he was, nodding quietly and walking to seat beside you. You were sitting in the middle, with the two boys at your side. And you three just grew closer from then, it was like the boys didn’t want to be away from you. 

While in the beginning you thought Sirius was clingy, he had nothing on James Potter. Whenever they were around you, they were close, in a very literal sense. They always had to be touching you somehow, either by brushing shoulder to shoulder, an arm draped over you, or leaning their heads on your shoulders in the Great Hall, especially Sirius, who always complained about having to wake up early for flying. Those touches slowly became something more: kisses on the cheek, holding your hand, a cheeky hand on your thigh, or backhugs. And while they did sometimes fight for your affection, neither of them seemed bothered by the other pulling you onto their lap or snuggling you closer to them.

One day, you were listening to music in the common room and there was no one else around since you had skipped a class to be there. You were leaning against James’ chest while Sirius had his head resting on your lap; he’d asked you to play with his hair. It was often that you cuddled with the two at the same time, and you loved it, but it also confused you. You somehow mustered up the courage to ask, “What are we?”

“We’re Gryffindors,” James replied at the same time that Sirius said something like “The stars of the show.”

You sighed at their answer and motioned for Sirius to sit up with a light pull on his shoulders. “I meant what are we…” you said, emphasizing the last bit by pointing at the three of you.

James and Sirius exchanged a look. They’d had this conversation before, neither of them willing to give you up, so they settled on sharing. They were both okay with it; in fact, they enjoyed cuddling each other too. “Whatever you want us to be, angel,” Sirius answered earnestly, grabbing one of your hands and intertwining your fingers together.

“If you want us to pull away, or one of us to step back away, we’ll respect your wish, but–” James started.

“–Neither of us wants that,” Sirius finished.

Battling with Invisible Enemies　(1) Could It Be World War 3?

When I first heard about the novel coronavirus at the end of January, I felt it would be the most terrible disease in my life. Patients in China suddenly lost consciousness and passed within a few days, which happened to quite healthy people. At that time, I was going to book a cabin hotel in Shinjuku to take my accounting test on February 1.

I usually stay at a cabin hotel since it’s cheaper than an ordinary non-smoking single room, but this time, I thought it dangerous to stay in Shinjuku, where I heard rich Chinese tourists visited to get face masks and anti-virus necklaces in bulk as souvenirs for their family or neighbors. Unfortunately, some of them were not very well but managed to complete their itineraries with their precious souvenirs. This was the very first news I heard about the dreadful COVID-19, which completely changed my commuting style to Tokyo ever since. I thought by my hunch that riding trains or busses is fatal, because I might encounter coronavirus carriers with no symptoms there. I drove all the way to my correspondence university campus, stayed at a non-smoking single room in Itabashi Ward (a northwest suburb from the metroplitan area) on the way, which cost me 3500 yen for speedway and 5500 for accomodation and light meals. Of course, I wore a (disposable) mask and an anti-virus necklace during the test time. Wearing a mask in early February is common in Japan before COVID-19 was introduced; Japanese often suffer from the flu or hay fever, so they tend to stockpile masks for health reasons. After finishing my accounting test, I felt my sink-or-swin battle with coronavirus has started. Teachers mustn’t catch it not only for themselves but also for public safety. I decided not to take trains, busses or any public transportation until the coronavirus pandmic ends.

My favorite drugstore has weekly sale on Mondays, so I usually buy tissues, toiletries in bulk. From January to April, I also get some boxes of masks there, but this year the situation was completely different. I scarcely bought the last boxed mask on February 3 if I remember correctly; I’ve almost never seen masks there ever since, except  small packages of ones (5 on average in a plastic bag) are alloted to 15 customers on average just occasionally. My family members even say getting surgical masks is like winning the lottery.

Two days after assessment tests at my correspondence university, more and more coronavirus patients in Japan were reported. At first, they were mainly Chinese tourists traveling by chartered buses, but about a week later, the local bus driver and the tour guide got sick and were tested positive for coronavirus. Since they lived far from my residence, I thought I was safe unless I traveled by a train or a long-distance bus, but the situation was worsened much more rapidly than I expected:  the endemic on a cruise ship named “Diamond Princess”. A few passengers got sick with pneumonia symptoms on the ship, which stuck in Yokohama to quarantine all passengers for the maximum of two weeks until hospitals and embassys got ready.

In the middle of February, new victims who got the virus by community transmission have been frequently reported. This means Covid-19 has spread as widely as common cold, in other words, a person with just one minor symptom such as sore throat, cough, headache, or exhaustion might be affected by coronavirus. It’s become tremendously difficult for experienced doctors to distinguish Covid-19 cases from other minor diseases like common cold and hay fever.

Some coronavirus carriers with no symptom tend to transmit their virus to other people and also to their pet dogs or cats, which makes the situation severer than other virus’ cases. On the other hand, there are quite a few patients who were tested negative but have been suffering from high fever, exhaution, and difficulty in breathing. It’s natural even for doctors and researchers to overlook how many victims there are precisely and fail to pinpoint hot spots. To make things worse, no effective medication for the virus hasn’t found yet.

Since then, I’ve started watching YouTube video clips about coronavirus warning because I feel it’s too late to wait for official announcements from the government. I was terribly shocked when I watched a couple of video messages from Japanese freelancers working in China and Italian professor teaching at a university in Osaka; both said “we’re in the warfare against coronavirus.” Their words really impressed me, and I decided to do my current best to back up medical staff in Japan; I’ve not gotten upset when I see “Masks sold out. TBO” signs at supermarkets and drugstores ever since. Using disposable masks less for citizens will lead to bring more masks to medical staff and hospitalized patients.

David Bowie - The Buddha Of Suburbia (1993)

Mistakingly marketed as a TV “soundtrack” (only the title track appears in the series, nothing else) and therefore receiving “soundtrack” level financial support (shitty) and with the United States ducking the single for it’s use of the word “bullshit” and a video showing DB smoking (shocking!) - this quickly became the best David Bowie album that the fewest people had ever actually heard.

This is every bit a solo David Bowie album, and proclaimed by David in 2003 to be his favorite studio album he’s ever made. DB’s most hands-on record since Diamond Dogs, playing keyboards and synths, guitar, alto and baritone sax and percussion - and beautifully assisted by multi-instrumentalist Erdal Kizilcay, with a guest appearance by Mike Garson on two tracks.

Recorded at lightening speed in 6 days and mixed over that weekend, TBOS is a vital DB record that reaches deep into his past and across it - not only in inspiration and tone, but with direct musical quotation (All The Madmen and Space Oddity are unmissable in the title track.) It also tethers Black Tie White Noise to 1. Outside and sees DB using some very experimental studio production work inspired directly by his work with Eno in the Berlin period. DB used the actual 40+ soundtrack pieces he created for the show as elastic sonic material from which to extrapolate this work, and timestretched, reversed, layered and juxtaposed in order to elicit “dangerous and attractive” motifs the could be isolated, treated and repeated.

So many amazing tracks to talk about here... the title track stunner seems to share a lineage with the composition string of Absolute Beginners/When The Wind Blows/This Is Not America and pulls that incredible Bowie trick of digging out timbres and sonics of the past and sending them hurling into the future.

Sex And The Church delivers DB though a vocoder and hypnotic club beat and refuses traditional pop structure.

South Horizon holds out its palm and tells of a future called “Outside” - Bowie called this his favorite track on the album and Mike Garson’s piano improvisations to be some of his best ever.

The Mysteries could be an A-Side for the B-Sides of Low and Heroes and is every bit as effective, and is certainly a must-hear for fans of DB’s Berlin period instrumental work.

Bleed Like A Craze, Dad features another killer Mike Garson piano performance, and has one foot in the past and one in the near future with foreshadowing of Outside and Earthling.

Strangers When We Meet, the same track that is better known in its re-recorded form on Outside, is a murkier, thicker affair here. The bass and guitar parts are gorgeously interlocked and percussive and keep Bowie’s layered vocals more buried and subdued. I love this version musically, but I think the Outside version is vocally superior and with that extended coda, more emotionally intense.

Dead Against It is a pretty sweet slab of genuine New Wave with its pulsing sequencers and synth stabs and it’s hard not to feel the joy woven into this song and those particular chord changes. Takes me right back to the 80’s.

If someone were to ask me to name the best DB track that the fewest people had ever heard of, I would give “Untitled No. 1” as my enthusiastic submission. What a brilliant gem this is, and I can’t wait for the next Legacy Box Set to put tracks like this into people’s homes.

Ian Fish, U.K. Heir - an anagram of the name of the book’s author Hanif Kureishi - is DB at his most minimalist, with timestretched background textures, blended static and noise, and wandering acoustic guitar. It’s a fascinating piece of experimental music and always makes me wish DB had released more of that type of work. It’s a little taste of David Bowie as ambient artiste.

My 2007 digital remaster here closes with a repeat of the title track, this time with Lenny Kravitz adding bite underneath with his guitar, yanking the track away more from the past and solidly into the decade in which it was written.

Certainly this album will be a centerpiece and highlight for many in the upcoming box set; I hope the master tapes were well secured and preserved, and I am excited to hear what they do with it. If this album remained a favorite of DB’s as he claimed at times, no doubt he laid out a plan for a more worthy presentation before he passed. It certainly deserves it, and is the solid aural link between the album before and immediately following.
