"Once prospectors had been attracted to the available land, the state provided specialized services to assist them in the accurate evaluation of their properties. When most mining companies could not afford complex machinery and continued assessing their claims by pick and shovel surface trenches, several mining companies through the Bureau of Mines purchased two diamond drills, the first in 1894 and the second in 1901, for use by government geologists and rental to private developers. Then, in the hope of inducing more thorough exploration by diamond drill, the Bureau relieved prospectors of some of the financial hardship entailed by absorbing 45 per cent of the modest rental. To assist in the speedy and accurate chemical analysis of mineral samples submitted by both private and government explorers, the province established its first assay office at Belleville in 1898. Soon afterward, when the northern camps came into their own, the government opened regional branches of this office to serve the immediate needs of the mining community. There government technicians evaluated the mineral content of drill cores and rock samples, judged the final determination of disputed mineralization values, and passed out a variety of technical and geological information to enquiring prospectors.
All levels of government, in their eagerness to hasten the location of certain strategic or especially desirable industries offered direct cash incentives such as bounties, bonuses and subsidies, as well as a variety of other inducements. A great deal has already been written concerning the tariff and bounty policies of the federal government. At the other pole of government, municipalities competed with each other in extending the most generous terms to interested industrialists. For instance, the promise of a small but important municipal bounty was enough to move Adam Beck's cigar box factory from Preston to London."

TRIGGERS: death, plane crash, depression, survivor’s guilt
P A S T  →
sarabeth’s life is filled with a lot of shiny things. from the silver that is constantly polished, marble banisters that always have a certain glint to them, the chandeliers that always seem to dance in the light, and the most important one of all: the diamonds. the walton-rowe ltd. is a huge player in the mining business; be it oil, ores containing copper, silver, and gold, and at the core center of the business itself is the diamond. the most prominent product of walton-rowe’s mines.
it all started when henry rowe, a british businessman, founded rowe mining corporation in the 1800s, becoming one of the major owners of diamond mines such as the de beers, rowe mining’s major competitor and the parameter of all diamond companies in the future are measured. the  companies were competing healthily and both continued to become a billion-dollar company until the great depression hit. while an advertising campaign saved the de beers from destitute, a marriage was what saved the rowe mining co.
abraham rowe and margaret walton’s marriage brought upon the strongest joint venture in history, the merge between rowe mining co. and john walton inc, creating walton-rowe ltd. john walton inc. was a mining company whose focus was to mine for ores containing copper, silver, and gold and they also had oil drilling mines across the world. john walton inc. funded the entire operations of rowe mining’s diamond ventures, who was also benefited by piggybacking the de beer’s advertising campaign and abraham and margaret’s own brilliant strategic business planning. now, diamonds are the main venture for walton-rowe ltd.’s business.
reginald walton-rowe is the sole heir of the company. reginald was not the typical rich boy whose face would appear in tabloids every week with a girl by his side. he did everything right; graduated summa cum laude from wharton business school, earned his mba in stanford with a 4.0 gpa, took on the family business right after university, and have stayed away from being featured in sleazy tabloids looking to build controversies around him, because his life was clean from the common rich bachelor vices such as women, booze, drugs, gambling, and more.
his entire life changed when he met ophelia, however. a spontaneous, smart, and ambitious jet-setting heiress of the american luxury hotel and resorts company, the sullinger group. she had many connections and friends across the globe; some tabloids even reported a boyfriend in each continent for every time she visits, but whether that was true or not remained unknown by the public. while reginald had his entire life planned, ophelia was the type to roll with the punches, going with where life leads her and improvise to achieve her ambitions. she brought a whole new meaning to reginald’s carefully-planned life, essentially throwing his manual out the window and showing him a whole new world.
the couple were married in an extravagant wedding in lake como, italy. a few years later, they were gifted with a beautiful baby girl, sarabeth orla cordelia walton-rowe. but pregnancy was not the easiest thing that ophelia went through. ophelia had two miscarriages before they finally had sarabeth, and even then the journey was rough; it started with an increasingly tough phase of morning sickness to the point that ophelia was barely able to keep anything down so she had to be injected with an iv every other week. then, she was bedridden for the entire last trimester of the pregnancy, she had to undergo an emergency c-section, and recovery was a tough road. this added to the love ophelia and reginald had for their only daughter.
reginald and ophelia walton-rowe’s whole world revolved around sarabeth. she entered the best schools, had the best tutors, and was allowed to explore any hobby she liked. piano, painting, ballet, gymnastics, violin, and even origami for a few months. sarabeth was allowed to take a fashion course after school when she was sixteen for an entire year and then interned for vogue when she was seventeen.
sarabeth acquired many skills in her pocket, but her true calling was becoming a businesswoman just like her mother and her father. sarabeth had a knack for business; able to sell whatever products was given her way, and she was able to build connections and she had a lot of friends. a lot of people were jealous, of course, of the girl who was spoiled even more than british royalty.
every holiday, sarabeth would go to a different country and bring home many interesting stories of skiing at the alps or staying in a yacht in the french riviera, getting to take a photo with the winner of the monaco grand prix, and more. every fashion season, sarabeth would own pieces even before they were available in store, even had haute couture pieces designed just for her. she was a regular attendee of fashion weeks ever since she turned twenty-one.
like her father, she graduated magna cum laude from wharton business school and an mba at harvard. she had ambitions and goals, and she worked hard to achieve them. but, like her mother, sarabeth was spontaneous and gregarious. she had friends from all over the world with various occupations––actors, models, businesswomen, businessmen, lawyers, hoteliers, even doctors. life was perfect for sarabeth. even a pimple was a rare issue for the girl, not that it does not happen.
that was until three years ago, when a plane crash on their private jet killed both her parents on way back from london to new york for christmas. sarabeth was not on the plane with them, although she was supposed to be. sarabeth was in paris for fashion week, of which she was a regular attendee. but after one of her best friends went to labor early, the socialite decided to stay another day instead of joining her parents in london, and would fly back to new york on her own. she was supposed to be in the flight that killed her parents.
she was about to board the private jet when she heard of the tragedy. her security detail escorted her back to the hotel, where sarabeth spent the next five days as search parties tried to recover her parents’ remains. the funeral and the wake went by quickly, and although sarabeth managed the best possible smile she could for the guests, every single person there knew that a part of her died along with her parents.
the will-reading came after that. the whole walton-rowe and sullinger family came to the event––ophelia’s siblings and reginald’s cousins mainly––anticipating that they will get a share of what reginald and ophelia had. alas, the entire ownership of walton-rowe’s estate, money, investments, and the walton-rowe company was left to their only daughter, even forty percent of the walton-rowe’s share of the sullinger group, making sarabeth the owner of the largest share of the company.
this created the classic family feud over money. all of them aimed their deadly stares at the girl they thought was just another pretty blonde girl who knows nothing about running a business as large as walton-rowe and the sullinger group. sarabeth was bombarded with aunts and uncles who tried to make her renounce the inheritance, insensitive of her grief. that was when randolph walton-rowe, sarabeth’s grandfather who decided to return from retirement and come to new york all the way from london, stepped in. keeping sarabeth’s aunts, uncles, and cousins who craved for the inheritance at bay, allowing sarabeth to run away to paris, the city she found solace in when she heard of her parents’ death.
for an entire year, the girl stayed in the penthouse at george v and avoided every part of the family’s drama. she found the time to deal with her own grief, depression, and the most painful one of all, the survivor’s guilt.
sarabeth attended therapy sessions, did exercises, hung out more with her friends as per her therapist’s prescriptions, and even tried to be more involved in the company she was supposed to be running. one year later, sarabeth was able to not cry every time she was alone, but she also knew that sitting around at her house and going out on brunches or parties would not help. as long as her mind is not preoccupied, it allows the memory of her parents and the guilt she felt to creep back in to her mind. she was not going to let that happen. that was how she decided that she needed to get back to the states.
sarabeth needed to run her empire, to prove the people who underestimated her wrong, but most importantly, she wanted nothing more than to get her original stride back. she wanted to work, to do something with her life instead of just laying around feeling miserable and wasting time.
it has been two years since sarabeth first came back to the states and started to become more involved in the legacy her parents left her. sarabeth had focused more on walton-rowe when she returned; after all, the company was left without a ceo. she focused on restructuring the company, eliminating personnels she knew to have no good intentions, people her father had always wanted to eliminate. she recruited a number of young people into her team, people who bring a new perspective into the company who desperately needed to approach the business world in a new light––a light where businesses need to keep up with the ever-growing and ever-changing trends of the world––and a fresh new perspective.
P R E S E N T  →
it started with sarabeth realizing that walton-rowe needed a face to connect with the people who bought their diamonds. of course, ever since it started, walton-rowe had always been a supplier of diamonds to large jewelry stores such as harry winston, tiffany & co., and cartier. it exclusively collaborated with renowned jewelers for the people who are willing to pay more for a custom-designed piece of jewelry exclusively from the walton-rowe house. but sarabeth knew that simply making exclusive collections for people who can afford it is not enough to ensure that walton-rowe will remain a powerful game-changer in the business––and the only way to do that is for their brand to have a face––to allow not just the rich 1% of the world’s population be able to afford their diamonds, but anyone who can afford the most beautiful declaration of love.
sarabeth opened walton-rowe’s first flagship jewelry boutique on fifth avenue called ophelia by walton-rowe, with customers pouring in to take in the beautiful collection that has been advertised and teased for months. sales continued to skyrocket, with celebrities becoming the face of the advertisement and the brand ambassadors. even with prices given at a discount, and random lucky customers treated into getting a jewelry more than their budget, letting the fame of the new walton-rowe jewels to spread like wildfire through word-of-mouth and of course through the digital world, the most effective method of advertisement today.
however, even with ophelia gaining so much popularity, the scrutiny sarabeth continued to heighten; either jealousy or the fact that they are in denial that the young businesswoman was actually capable, but either way they continued to undermine sarabeth’s ability––blinded by her age, her lack of experience, and maybe even her gender.
but the excitement of the new venture is not the only thing keeping sarabeth busy. new developments have emerged from her parents’ plane crash to prove that it was not an accident at all. evidence suggests that her parents’ planes were rigged to plummet the way it did. recordings from the black box that was finally discovered indicated that the pilots knew the private jet was rigged as soon as the whole system started to break down.
with her inheritance and the connections she has, sarabeth hired a private investigator to help the fbi with the case that would crack the mystery of who was behind the death of her parents and ensured that everything is kept in secret; only between her, her security detail, and the fbi. her heart was set to find the people responsible and make sure the receive the consequences.

Destiny was a gift to those deserving of it, righteousness was saved for the strongest, and glamour was just fucking fun. These were all the things that encompassed all that was Eli Drake. The grandeur of his life was shifted from boredom, to prestige, to being nothing short of an utter fuck up—to getting his life together. Playing the world as one large game—and looking to win. Born and raised in Kingston upon Thames in London, to a Swedish mother and an English father. Within the nature of their affair–his father abandoned and divorced his first wife in lieu of Eli’s mother–shown to Eli from a young age, that all, potentially, were disposable, if you viewed them as such. Of course, none of this was diluted either, given the borough he resided in within his youth brought prestige within his thus short life. Eli was a child, blessed with righteousness and need to prove the world wrong. Or, in some twisted chance of fate, his parents.  With the coming ground that he’d grown up within the knowledge that status came from money, and the levels of your own bank account proved further if you deserved to rule the world or not. This notion was drilled into his mind since a young child, by the overburden passing thought that they were nothing more than their own self-worth. A mother laden with alcoholic substances practically thriving through her blood, and a father’s who’s best skill was feeling up whatever assistant he’d hired that week. What a way to raise a child, yes? Cold. That’s what lingered for the man, as he’d sprouted quite wonderfully. With the dull attention that London’s grey skies laid on his horizon, he knew one thing—breaking from them, becoming the powered instead of seduced by it was the common goal. Eli was not someone who was going to sit there and wait for the world to hand him the trophy he wanted, nay, deserved. Throughout his life, Eli was exposed to the harsh tones of what became of the scum considered within the workings of Cartels. Until one came along and paid gloriously.
Being their own Mining conglomerate, it only made sense that the darker seeds of distrust sprung from the truth that there were ways to get rich easily—and then there were ways to stay rich. That was the lifestyle and choice that his parents choose, knowing that there could never be a chance they didn’t try—nor sunk into the vastly unappealing title of “millionaire.” If they were not billionaires, they were nothing. The depiction of unhealthy relationships spring from his parent’s relationship. Eli was taught fights included smashed glass from tossing it at someone’s head, that commitment was a sickness, and no man could ever truly settle for one woman. But that was a toxic suggestion from his father, that should his mother ever cheat, which he’d known first-hand how well she got on with the staff, that would be the end of it all. So it was played and followed, coy at first, before it sunk into the fact that this life—his life—was going to be swallowed up by the truth. The truth of his emotions, his soul, and never lay barren to another soul. Truth would’ve been spun, outlined to something else. Something approved.
Even as he grew into his teens, and finally adulthood, Eli was the by-product of his parents’ inaction to raise a regular human being. The toxic notion that he was above all span all the sexes, all partners of both beings, and shifted him into an atmospheric nature that alluded all who came into his cross hairs. Of course, in the simple sense, he was cold, complicated, calculated and positioned to get all he wanted. Notably, a few celebrities fell into that list, a prince and princess—or two—and cartels. Deep within the shaded area of his family’s wealth laid the truth of their pious growth. Cartels—in this, the Rinaldi Cartel—dignified them with the millions more that cap-sized the billions he earned through his family’s work. And while he played the title of bachelor and heir—it never came into light that he’d one day have to settle, slow his path and take over. But accidents happen, don’t they? In the light of a stormy night, did the whispers of words reach the wait staff within his home before it had ever been whispered to the only child who sat atop a multi-billion dollar fortune. That he was the sole heir to the Drake Diamond Mine. That he would step above all those who would consider others, over the rules of the will set forth from his father long ago—so long ago, he was convinced, as hues scanned the will’s truths, that his father looked at it long before his father realized just how much he hated his only child. Had his sheltering in ways he was as unaware as a child, kept him away from the darker sides of the world were unacceptable? Possibly. Did it make his intention crueler even so—yes.
The death turned him into the shell of a man, something that shook him to his core. He didn’t recognize himself, a slink into the darkened state came with drug abuse, finding cocaine his weapon of choice. For six months, Eli spent his time on a high, drunk too often, and coming to a crossroads where he didn’t know where the line began and ended. He severed ties with those who held tight within his parents circle, finding their well-wishes almost cruel and unwanted. Finding himself slip from everything he once was, right down to the physical appearance. There was an issue—when he’d known he’d hit rock bottom. Finding friendship in those around him—the few he kept himself involved with, he cleaned up, and his physical being took precedence over everything else. By the time a year and a half had passed since his parents passing, Eli had moved into something his parents would be rolling over in the grave for. Now, with the world at his feet, the bevvy of beings lined up to catch his eye—it took no time for Eli to simply spin this too his advantage. His eye had been caught by Naomi Stone long before he would’ve ever admitted it too. He wouldn’t have been allowed to, back then when his parents walked the earth. Simplicity in a woman who kept him on his toes then would’ve barked at the notion that he was not like his father—and that would not fly.
Then again, he certainly was. In all his truths, abandoning and then having her kicked off his yacht almost a hundred miles off the coastline of Southern France, it might’ve been the breaking point of a second where he could’ve come back from it all, been a better man. But that was just the thing—he was a product of insanity, the binds never existing for a soul such as he, and when confined to tight corners, they lash out—break free. Summer romances came and went, memories stung to his mind like a piercing light in the middle of darkness, but he wouldn’t elude them to be anything more than that. That’s all they were. Then, and now. Now, now all that mattered was the job, the portrayal of business man while his shadow confined to London’s dismal corners, he traveled to Lakewood, where his wealth would be amassed by the treasure of control, something he longed for in his own profession. Mines purchased to further his own, while aiding the development of a family he thoroughly believed in, through his friendship with Elisabeth Rinaldi. Both of them understanding that the purpose was gain, and gain was money. Nothing, nothing, would stand in Eli’s way of that.

A long lost piece of England’s Stonehenge monument is helping experts understand the mysterious prehistoric structure. Analysis of a core sample taken from one of the site’s massive slabs suggests that the stone’s geochemical composition may have made it uniquely well-equipped to stand the test of time.
Made from 99.7 percent quartz crystals, the stones are practically indestructible, according to a new study published in the journal Plos One.
“Now we’ve got a good idea why this stuff’s still standing there,” study co-author David Nash, a professor of physical geography at the University of Brighton, told Business Insider. “The stone is incredibly durable—it’s really resistant to erosion and weathering.”
The study was made possible thanks to a former diamond cutter, Robert Phillips, who died last year. He did repair work at Stonehenge in 1958, drilling into Stone 58 to help re-erect a fallen trilithon of three stones.

When the work was done, Phillips was allowed to keep one of the three-and-a-half foot cylindrical cores as a souvenir. He returned it 60 years later, opening new avenues of research into Stonehenge’s origins—taking new samples from the protected monument is prohibited. Experts were able to conduct destructive testing on half the sample.
“Getting access to the core drilled from Stone 58 was very much the Holy Grail for our research,” Nash said in a statement. “It is extremely rare as a scientist that you get the chance to work on samples of such national and international importance.”

Working with experts from British Geological Survey, English Heritage, and the Natural History Museum in London, Nash subjected the Phillip’s Core, as it is known, as well as a second sample from the Salisbury Museum in England, to X-ray and CT scans, examining them under a microscope. What they saw were tiny grains of quartz arranged in an incredibly strong interlocking matrix of crystals, providing an ideal building material.
“These cements are incredibly strong. I’ve wondered if the builders of Stonehenge could tell something about the stone properties, and not only chose the closest, biggest boulders, but also the ones that were most likely to stand the test of time,” Nash told Science Alert.

Geochemically, the Stone 58 sample is a match to 50 of the 52 remaining sarcens, so any findings derived from the cores likely apply to the vast majority of the monument. The specific kind of stone is called silcrete, which forms from groundwater washing though buried sediment, reports Reuters.
Dating found that the stones were largely composed of eroded sediments from the Paleogene period, from 66 million to 23 million years ago.

But they also incorporate much older material from the Mesozoic era, between 252 million and 66 million years ago, and the Mesoproterozoic era, an astounding 1 billion to 1.6 billion years ago.
The Phillilp’s Core had already allowed Nash and his team to solve one of Stonehenge’s most enduring mysteries: the origin of its monolithic stones.

It was long suspected that the sarcens came from the chalk hills of Marlborough Downs. Testing on the Philips Core allowed researchers to identify the stone’s “geochemical fingerprint,” and match it to stone slabs from a specific location in the downs known as the West Woods.
Stonehenge was likely erected in two phases between 5,000 and 4,500 years ago. In addition to the massive sarcens, the monument also includes an interior circle of smaller bluestones. Recent studies suggest that the bluestones hail from the Preseli Hills in Wales, and were initially built there, before being transported to the Salisbury Plain.

The three-month multi-utilities works package sees blu-3 work with support from London Diamond Drilling Ltd to excavate and prepare the site for water, gas, electric and communications installations.
Greenwich Peninsula is currently undergoing huge regeneration by developers Knight Dragon Ltd.
The transformation will see more than 15,000 new homes being built, as well as a new mixed-use tube station, schools, offices, health services, public spaces and a unique, purpose-built design district.
Blu-3 has a team of eight working on the project to ensure it remains on track to meet exacting delivery schedules.
Blu-3 senior project manager, Simon Hughes, said: “Working on the Greenwich Peninsula has been a great experience for blu-3.
