#dghda animated series

right so I haven’t seen anyone else post about this on here but there’s good news and bad news from Reddit that was posted a little over a week ago, coming from Arvind

the good news is that they were APPARENTLY in mid-process with the animated series. The bad news is- well- everything else

I personally feel that when this series comes out, all this waiting will be a distant bad memory for the fandom that we’ll fondly refer to as “the dark ages”

i always get so happy when i think about an animated dghda series. like, imagine a cartoon dirk unrestrained by the laws of physics. it'd be so fun!!

yes!! the series is still in production, led by arwind ethan david who was the producer on the 2016 show and the author of dirk gently comics published by IDW! (there are three volumes/stories, and all of them center a new dirk, more closely based on douglas adams' character. but in one of the volumes, "salmon of doubt", comic dirk travels to another universe and meets 2016 dirk, and a bunch of 2016 characters show up! it's a Great backstory source.) there's a bit of reblogs about it on my blog, under the "dirk gently animated series" tag (i've only created it a few days ago so i could link it here, so i may have missed a post or two in the re-tagging process)

so, for the fan-novels! my main two recommendations are "one septendecillion brass doorknobs" by @bootstrapparadoxed and "Shell Games and Yellow Herrings" by @vanillicose

one septendecillion brass doorknobs: coming up at whopping 82K words and 32 chapters, this is a fully-furnished, fully finished mystery-comedy-drama novel! in the spirit of dghda, it's got EIGHT separate plotlines that crash together in the most spectacular of fashions, the stupidest (and i mean that with awe and honor) ending you could ever imagine that ties a neat little bow on everything, and a really fun writing style that everyone says is a perfect match to original douglas adams' novels! there are wonderful, well-developed, weird as hell oc's whom i love dearly and who shine as much as the canon characters, there's a queer aroace relationship at the center of the plot, there's sci-fi bullshit afoot, this book makes great and really creative use of the "aliens" and "a gang of genuis children" ideas outlined in the show bible, and there's a tasteful dash of brotzly to polish it all off :3 can't recommend this novel enough, it's all-around perfect!! also a cool feature i'd like to point out: the narrative is presented from an omniscient viewpoint which is rarely found in fanfiction (more common in published works), and that was really fun to read!

Shell Games and Yellow Herrings: at the mind-blowing length of 248K words and 76 chapters (as of 21st may 2023), this work is still updating to this day — every week like clockwork! last update was just this monday, and best believe there's more where that came from! the author's dedication (to consistent updates, and painstaking research, and perfectly realistic locations) is honestly almost scary. i haven't gotten too far in it yet (no furher than ch11), so i can't say much about the plot that's only starting to peek from under the surface to me, but i already hold this book as one of my favorite fanfics ever! the characterization is perfect, the dialogue is perfect, the writing style is utterly delightful, the plot is immersive, the mystery is captivating, and i'm in love with every single sentence! there's a mysterious art collective, mysterious organized crime, a mysterious beheading, a mysterious stolen gold bracelet, blackwing happenings, psychic visions, quantum physics, modern sculptures, and more!! i genuinely want every person in the fandom to give this novel the time of their day because it's so fucking GREAT!!

with the main recs out of the way, i've got two honorary mentions: the "Where I Intend to Go" series by @generalized-incompetence and a two-book casefic series by @sacred-algae

Where I Intend to Go: this only gets a honorary mention because it's not exactly a singular novel, instead being a collection of works in a variety of emotional tones and lengths (between 3k oneshots and 34k multichaps); but it does concern post-s2 plot and character developments, and that's why it goes in this post! it's got aliens, it's got blackwing, it's got brotzly get-together, it's got bart's emotional closure, it's got the good stuff! i haven't yet read all of the works in this series, but i've Immensely enjoyed some of them: "Entanglements" is an infuriatingly good ken character study with great holistic shenanigans, fun quantum physics, and an ending that's both open and satisfying, Plus ch3 is one of my most favorite poems; and "Uncaged" is a bart-centric fic that rattled my brain and has permanently affecfed the way i view her and priest's relationship.

Dirk Gently Case-Fics (linear connected timeline): sadly, i haven't yet had the chance to even begin reading this series, and thus i can't give it a proper review/recommendation, but it's two whole novels for s3 and s4 respectively! according to the tags and summaries, there are ghosts, there are norse gods, and dirk gently solves the case of human existence! definitely sounds like something worth checking out if you're looking for continuation to the show

Help I just watched the first episode of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and I have several questions.

First of all where do I get the whole book series this is based off of? I know it's based on a book/s but I can only find them separately for some reason.

Second of all, why is Elijah Wood just a little guy.. like he's just a little guyyy.

Thirdly, what even.. like.. huh?? Who..Dirk is a.. I.. magic?? Science? Comedy-horrorish?? Everyone is so.. and.. ya know?

Fourth, no season 3 huh? I'm very late to the game but I hope there's a somewhat satisfying ending...

Lastly, are Todd and Dirk like.. is this fandom..? Did I catch the wrong vibes or are some of you out there? What do I tag this? Is this a ship or like a li'l life raft that I accidentally built?

there’s actually new developments! they now (finally) officially have the rights and have cast a voice actor for a new character! the sho is still actively happening!

Let’s talk about these images.

Firstly, I’d like to ask the question of “is the woman in the first two images Farah, or someone else?”

I mean, I was kind of upset with how her lips are drawn in the second one until I though, hey, maybe it’s lipstick, but then again, we haven’t seen Farah wear lipstick, have we? Or surplus amounts of pink, and painted pink nails? And her hair is different too. We have seen Farah wear a different hairstyle, though, so I’m not too sure about that one.

I’d also like to talk about the objects in the background of the second one, a skateboard and a guitar, which also made me think that perhaps this is a new character and those objects belong to her, orrr- this is Farah and this is some other version of Todd’s apartment? Arvind did say that the series would take place after season two, and apparently the Ridgley was burnt down. Or this is a flashback, which Arvind said there could possibly be, which brings me to my second point.

In the comics, Farah brought Dirk to America for Patrick Spring’s case. Maybe the first image is Farah driving him to the Perimman Grand (or however you spell it), where he’d be staying? In the comics, he was also wearing the infamous yellow jacket when he arrived in America, which would mean this is a flashback, and this is Farah, but if this were the case, what about the second image? They don’t appear to be in the Perriman. Perhaps this is taking place after season two, and as we’ve seen her do before, the yellow jacket is Mona Wilder?

All in all, I don’t think this woman is Farah, but it still could be! Here’s some other things I’d like to point out.

-Dirk seems to have straight up invaded Farah’s/Mystery Woman’s apartment.

-Bart appears to be in a child’s room, which reminded me of the Cardenas’ house.

-The child’s room also reminds me of the room younger Dirk was in, in those deleted scenes?

-The Spider-verse-esque style is literally amazing. I think the 3-D and the 2-D aspects go so well together and I hope this is the style the final series is in.

-We haven’t seen Todd in this style yet.

-if you’re not signed up to recieve updates on the series, Arvind said that due to COVID-19, they’re not as far along in production of the animated series as they’d have liked to be, but it’s still being worked on.

My friend Edster, who also runs the Electric Monks podcast, made a video about everything we currently know about the DGHDA animated series! Includes a lot of interesting new information and bits from an interview with showrunner Arvind Ethan Davis :)

I wanted to try my hand at a DGHDA animated series redesign (from the current versions posted on Arvind’s twitter) for a very simple reason… they’re STRANGE AJKHSGSAJKHGSHKJA (and most don’t look like the characters/actors) Obligatory disclaimer that i’m not a professional character designer, but I wanted to do this anyway based on my informal knowledge about the matter.

Here’s a breakdown of my critics and how I redrew each one of them:

Farah: Critics: Desatured skin tone, hair doesn’t look nothing alike Jade’s in the show, her stance was very “loose”, her body tipe isn’t that curvy (something I noticed in all three is that the designer made them all like that, when the actresses all have a more flat/slim body); Her base shapes were rectangles and circles.

What I did: Brought up the saturation, made her hair rounder, used squares, circles and triangles as her basic shapes, gave her combat boots, made her taller, gave her a more confident stance. She’s now closer to Todd and… …Dirk: Critics: I think they were quite spot on with his basic characterisctics, but I wanted to change a few things, like his expression, not saturated colours.

What I did: Kept the original basic shape (rectangles), changed the pant’s and shoe’s color, put his hands in his pockets, made the colors a bit more saturated. Now he’s intruding the personal space of…

…Todd: Critics: everything, what the f*ck lmao. I’m bitter but i’ll try to be suscint: His basic shapes are rectangles and triangles, his stance is very grumpy, so is his expression, and Todd isn’t like that. The colors are also very “meh” and the headshots look like he’s taking his mugshot, very bad all around. The only thing they got right was the eye color.

What I did: Recreated everything, now his basic shapes are squares and circles, has a kinda unsure but ready to fight stance, his face looks more like the actor’s, more proportionated body figure, gave him folded cuffs. Made him a bit more alike…

…Amanda: Critics: I actually liked the design and color choices, but her vibe is all wrong and she was given a very curvy body type, when the actress has a more slim/flat one. Has a skinny rectangle and circles as her base shapes. Another thing is that she’s shorter than todd, when they’re about the same height.

What I did: put together her original headshot and full body shot together as a base, keeping the basic shapes the same, but slimming her body up and making her taller. I also gave her a more curious and confident expression. Her unsureness comes from the “crossed” arms in front of her and I also gave her boots instead of flats. She’s also unbothered by… …Bart: Critics: I really liked her looks overall, but I wanted to change a couple things. Her basic shapes were triangles and rectangles. She also had a curvy body type for some unknown reason (I’m betting like 100 bucks these designs were made by a cis guy)

What I did: Changed her expression to a more softly confused one, as well as her body stance(she isn’t conciously mean intended, and doesn’t quite understand why killing is bad); Made the blood more disperse and made her hair more dirty, made her with no shoe on one foot and a boot on the other, kept the basic colours, added more roundness to some parts, like her face and legs

If you read until here, thank you, and I hope you liked my takes (which are, again, not professional and taking into consideration that those are probably the middle stages of the character design ~or so I hope.) I’m open to critics as always :^D

for anyone who is having a hard time watching/enjoying dghda after the recent allegations, I thought i’d make a masterpost of pieces of media that are similar! It’s pretty hard to find things that have the exact feel of dghda, but all of these are similar in one way or another!

books

obviously any books/shows/movies/radio dramas involving Douglas Adams

American Gods/pretty much any book or show by neil gaiman–He has a similar leaning towards the supernatural while retaining humor and good character design.

Cloud Atlas– this book has en extremely different aesthetic but follows the same “everything’s connected” idea

the John Dies At The End series/pretty much anything involving David Wong–These books are honestly extremely different and yet extremely similar to dghda, they have a huge spot close to my heart and are good to read if you like sci fi with extremely complicated plots

Howl’s Moving Caste/any books by Diane Wynne Jones–her writing has a very similar feel to Douglas Adams’ books, but for a younger audience.

Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart–  Same sort of humour, very witty, and the best plot of any book I’ve ever read, as tight as if not tighter than dghda

The Librarians– another cool show about a group of people from different backgrounds that spans a bunch of different genres and subjects

Pushing Daisies– I’ve never actually watched this one, but I’m told it has an extremely similar aesthetic and main character to dghda

Doctor Who– You Know Why

Preacher– a really cool horror/sci fi/fantasy/etc show that, while not that similar to dghda in it’s themes, has a similar feel of mystery and weird mix of genres!

The Good Place– a comedy that also mixes happy/comedic themes with supernatural/deep ones.

Mob Psycho 100– one of my favorite anime, not all that similar but also has an unwilling/psychic protagonist and a lot of really cool characters.

Stranger Things– Eleven’s background is extremely similar to Dirk’s, and it manages to mix humorous and serious tones in much the same way.

Wyonna Earp– I don’t know a lot about this show but a couple people have suggested it.

podcasts

WTNV– you’re probably familiar to this one, it’s different in a lot of ways but still deals with the mysteries of the universe and has great lgbt rep. The books are pretty great too

The penumbra podcast– this one is one of my favorites and I think it’s kind of underrated, like dghda it stars a detective with a murky past and has amazing queer representation

The Bright Sessions– also contains a group of people with supernatural/esp-related abilities
