Favorite

The Murmur of Bees by Sofía Segovia (5 stars)

Something I’ve learned about myself the last few years is that I LOVE Latin-American fiction + Magical Realism. Every book I’ve read in that genre has received a 5 star rating from me. Family sagas with a touch of magic just do something for me, and this was no exception. It was a book that I actually kinda took my time reading bc I wanted to savor it. It was also translated, so I imagine that the original is even better.

Least favorite

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohar (3 stars)

So the prose in this book was lovely. The metaphor and the text painting were my favorite parts. However....I think maybe I just didn’t “get” it? It didn’t quite click for me and I wish it had. It’s something I might try and re-read in a few years with new eyes and see how it goes. But, as with most “leasts,” it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t up there with the others.

Surprised me (positive)

The Naughty Girls Book Club by Sophie Hart (4 stars)

This was a true and total surprise. I thought this would just be a dinky little book about a book club full of white women drinking wine; a dime a dozen. But it absolutely was not. It was an utter delight.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

This actually ended up being a DNF for me, but no other books really evoked any negative feelings. I tried so hard to get into this book but I couldn’t. I felt like I had been reading forever, then I realized I was barely 25% through it. There was some beautiful writing at times, but the story was so all over the place and the protagonist was THE MOST boring protagonist in all of history.

A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum (5 stars)

Gah. When I tell you I cried....the back and forth between mother and daughter is so well done. I won’t say more bc I don’t want to spoil it but GAH!!!

Mind fuck honestly. Usually I’m super critical of books about psychiatric care, but this one is actually pretty accurate.

- With the Fire in High by Elizabeth Acevedo (5 stars)

Equal parts funny and touching. I really liked that the cooking aspect was like...actual cooking and not just “this character loves cooking - here’s a soufflé!” It was cool food with cool twists.

- The Mermaid’s Voice Returns in This One by Amanda Lovelace (4 stars)

Another goodie in this collection

- bone by Yrsa Daley-Ward (4 stars)

Powerful af. I wish it had been longer.

- Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden (4.5 stars)

I didn’t want to like this bc a white man wrote it. The story accuracy is iffy but the prose was so good. Damn.

- Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by Pablo Neruda (5 stars)

- The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon (4 stars)

I got an early release thru BotM and it was a delight!! Now I want to read her other books.

Overall very enjoyable. Humor, romance, drama! It has it all! Also it takes place in DFW :D

2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge

The new year is upon us! Which means it was time for me to decide how I wanted to go about my reading challenge for the year. In 2019, I pretty much read whatever I wanted, with the intent of reading more authors of color, romance, and books by women. While I didn’t quite reach my specific goal, my numbers were much higher than in previous years. So this year I decided to up the ante and not only raise those numbers again, but participate in the Popsugar Reading Challenge once more. 

When I did this challenge in 2018, it exposed me to books and authors I hadn’t thought to read or intended to read but just hadn’t gotten around to it yet. It also helped me realize that if a book isn’t enjoyable for me, I don’t have to read it.
