Dexys Midnight Runners - Let's Make This Precious (BBC Version) (1982)

Searching for the Young Soul Rebels is one of my faves, and in between that LP and their big hit LP Too-Rye-Ay, Dexys Mk II recorded an number of singles and a BBC session. Let's Make This Precious later reappeared with the fiddles and whatnot, but I much prefer this rendition, which retains a lot of the sound of their first LP.

The name comes from the drug Dexadrine - a brand of dextroamphetamine that was used recreationally by Northern soul fans.

Gibbons noticed that lots of artists had names that included initials. He sought to combine the names of his musical heros, B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill. He decided that 'Z.Z. King' sounded too similar to B.B. King, so he changed it to Z.Z. Top, because 'B.B. is at the top'.

Ok so after a long while, i finally decided "fuck it" and tried doing my first collage!

Yes it is a single picture of a shark cut out from a magazine, glued onto my journal and made to sing "Come On Eileen", but... uhh...

Look, it was my first time doing it so i was scared of screwing it up (also the only scraps i had were this and a catholic pamphlet i randomly picked up in the street, so the choice was pretty obvious). Either way, this aquatic fella has followed me through many a notebook, waiting for me to create the courage to use him for something. Well, that time has come. Sing those words proudly, buddy!
