Innisfree No Sebum Blur Powder - Your standard loose setting powder. It is tinted so there's a little coverage. One of my brushes is loaded up with this powder and will absolutely explode if touched the wrong way but I can't remember which one so that'll be a fun game of Russian roulette later. As always the shifter is out to get and I think about just prying the thing open. The puff it comes with is really good though

e.l.f. Cosmetics Matte Blotting Powder - Translucent (I believe) pressed powder. It's ight I guess I carry it around whether I wear makeup or not, since it's easy. Bonus points for pink packaging, I am such a girly girl (I am a boy)

e.l.f. Cosmetics HD Powder (Sheer) - Brand new straight from their site but I swear they only filled it halfway? I got it for whenever I decide white foundation is the vibe since my Innisfree one is tinted and I have a sneaking suspicion my other e.l.f. powder has a smudge of color to it.

L'Oreal Paris True Match Super Blendable Powder (n3 natural buff) - Somehow a perfect match for me even though my mom was the one who bought it for me? And it was online too. This woman didn't know my eye color until last week yet she shade matched me without me knowing? Since I like brightening up the center of my face and this has coverage, I focus this on the outside of my face. Blurring on the face and a good option for my hot girl summer. I think this would be able to stand alone as a powder foundation too

NYX Professional Makeup Matte Finish Setting Spray - I actually use this as a primer like 9/10 times lol. I don't like spray anything to begin with but I've gotten in the habit of using it as a priming spray, to wet my brushes, or to add some moisture back after an unintentional heavy powdering. I should maybe look into the dewy version for that but fuck me if I buy a setting spray fully knowing I hate setting sprays. I think I would enjoy a setting mist more and I hear the Morphe one is good but I don't wanna buy from Morphe.

The worst of my impulse purchases have arrived so I think this is a good time to round up the products and see what I have, what I like, what I don't like, what I've been neglecting, etc. I don't want to do project pan since I only leave the house like two or three times a week (but only for like. Things that don't matter. Who's getting ready to go to the fucking supermarket for 15 minutes) so it would just be me setting myself up for disappointment and that's no fun. How about this; I'll set some small, realistic goals for the year for some products and we'll see what happens. Swatches later maybe

Face Primers

Kose Suncut Water in UV Protect Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ - Yes this is technically a sunscreen but it also doubles as a makeup primer! This is the second primer sunscreen hybrid I've used (the first being Kao Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence which I also like and feels similar to this one). It's no longer available on YesStyle, which is where I get the majority of k and j beauty products, so that kind of sucks but I like trying out new products anyways. It feels hydrating but not heavy and absorbs into the skin not immediately but like. After a reasonable amount of time considering I slather a good amount of this all over my face and neck. No problems with laying foundation over it, no strong fragrance, no whitecast, the color isn't the stark white nightmare from my childhood, and while it doesn't completely smooth out my problem areas like the T zone or my cheeks (to be fair that's where all my large pores and acne are), it leaves the rest of my skin nice. This is my only sunscreen so obviously I'm going to use it until I either run out or it goes bad.

Milk Makeup Blur Stick - Hm. I used to really love this. It's easy to apply, glides smoothly, and leaves a nice velvet finish. Maybe there's a layer of grease that's built up over time (I should,,,, sanitize it regardless let's be honest) but I find it pilling in the more dehydrated nooks and crannies of my nose and over the textured parts of my skin. It's fine if I apply it on a flat and clear section but my acne is not taking it well. Can't say I recommend it if your face is a slice of pepperoni pizza like mine, but I will still be keeping it only to use on the outside of my face as I'm an incredibly oily and sweaty person and I find this keeps unwanted moisture from seeping out. It doesn't feel drying on the skin but it does feel dry so let's hope I can avoid two summers ago when my makeup melted off my face and sweat dripped from my hair down my forehead making it look like I just got out of the water. I was taking a leisurely walk downtown. I found the full size at a Marshall's for much cheaper so if you're paying full price for this you are an absolute clown. I did find it a couple of years ago so I doubt there's still any more left (plus it seems like Milk is paying more attention to their other primers) but at the very least, don't get the full size if you're a casual makeup wearer. Or do whatever you want I'm not your mom. I want to flatten the initial mound of product completely and start having to twist it up since holy shit I've had this since the 10th grade

Touch in Sol No Poreblem Primer - Oh my god this is my favorite primer so far. It does what the Milk used to do for me before it decided flaky skin was the look and lays beautifully over my large pores, acne, and weird patch on the side of my nose that for some reason decided to be a problem one day. I don't think acne scarring to blame but who knows at this point. It's more hydrating and a thinner consistency than the blur stick and doesn't have that balmy feel as it's a liquid, my nose looks and feels fine with it under foundation and powder, 10/10 I will use this until it's dead. I am not even rating these that's how you know I love this. If you see this at a Marshall's turn the other eye and leave that shit for me. There's a green one for redness I was also going to buy but decided against it specifically because the line was too long lol.

The Face Shop Air Cotton Makeup Base SPF30 PA++ (#01 Mint) - I got this for my "boy" makeup days where I want to look perfected but not actually done up. Haven't gotten around to using it since I got it pretty recently and been on a full color correcting kick nowadays. But sometimes I want to be a "yeah I have blemishes, what of it" kind of girl but also do I need to look like Rudolph the red nosed reindeer meeting up to gossip with my friend group???? No.

Test Drives: Tatcha, CTZN & Face Atelier

It’s a new month and that means it’s time for some more Test Drives! Since it’s ridiculously hot out and the 4th of July, I decided to do a very simple makeup look that is ultra sheer so that my face doesn’t melt off before the fireworks begin! In my previous Test Drives post, I mentioned how there were a few items that I played with for that look which were pretty cool and deserved their own review article. And those are going to be items that I’m reviewing today. I’ll be covering Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas, CTZN’s Nudiversal Lip Duos and Face Atelier’s Face Finish setting spray. As usual, I’ll outline which items were gifted to me by the brand and which I purchased. Full details on my makeup look will be at the end of this post.

Tatcha The Silk Canvas (purchased)

Okay so in a previous Test Drives post, I reviewed E.L.F. Cosmetics’ Poreless Putty Primer. And while I liked it, I wasn’t able to address whether it was a true dupe to Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas because I didn’t have that product to compare it to. But, I ended up going out and buying the travel size version of The Silk Canvas last month. Now that I’ve used both, I can honestly say that there is no comparison between The Silk Canvas and Poreless Putty Primer.

While E.L.F.’s dupe is a faithful attempt to capture the essence of what Tatcha’s product promises on and delivers, E.L.F.’s is definitely different and the experience between the two is noticeable. First off, E.L.F.’s primer applies wet/damp and then dries down. And if you’re heavy handed, it’s hard to properly buff it in as you’re left with weird beads of product all over your face. Plus while it is a faithful primer that offers a solid base for makeup applications, it did feel a little heavy as opposed to a traditional silicone primer like Smashbox or even E.L.F.’s other bottle-based primers.

In contrast, The Silk Canvas is really lightweight and breathable. Yes, a little goes a long way so you still shouldn’t be caking it on, but it buffs out easier. And most importantly, it doesn’t go on wet. It’s a true velvet-like balm. If I was going to recommend a true dupe to Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas, it would be Veil Cosmetics’ Automatte because of the texture, application and finish.

My only complaint about The SIlk Canvas is exactly the same as what I had with E.L.F.’s Poreless Putty Primer. Considering the extreme price difference between Tatcha and E.L.F., would it have killed the brand to include an applicator sponge?!

CTZN Nudiversal Lip Duo in Mexico City & Maldives (gifted)

Everyone knows that “nude” is subjective. So, often enough when a brand claims to make a nude lip, that “nude” can be pretty narrowly applied to one specific segment of the population—fair skinned people. But CTZN is turning that around with a ridiculous number of shades that actually are nude for a variety of skin tones. With 25 shades to choose from, there’s truly a nude out there for you within their collection. I ended up picking both Mexico City and Maldives. For today’s look, I wore Mexico City as a base and added a small swipe of Maldives to add a bit of warmer color. And as you can see from the pic, this is truly my nude.

I love that these nudes are dual ended. So, if you prefer a more matte effect, you can go with the lipstick. However, it’s a very hydrating matte—so no dry etched out lip lines! And then if you prefer more of a sheen, choose the lip gloss end. I opted for the matte side because I’m still stuck on mattes for the most part these days.

Another thing that I love is that, while it is an online brand, they took the time to photograph models of various skin tones wearing each of the 25 shades so you could clearly see how each shade will look on the tone closest to yours. And for the curious, the reason I ended up picking the two hues I did is because for a true nude effect, my skin tone fell between both of these shades and I couldn’t choose between the two.

Face Atelier Face Finish (gifted)

It’s summer and that means that you need to be properly prepping and finishing your face if you’re trying to wear a full look in hot weather. Face Finish from Face Atelier is meant to serve as a prep, setting, and refresh spray—giving you more bang for your buck. If you’re going to use it as a prep, spray it onto your face before you begin to apply makeup. And for setting or refreshing, simply spritz over your face after you finish your makeup or throughout the day so that your look lasts as long as you do.

I think this is a pretty great product with almost no scent (there is a bit of a cucumber smell in there so if you’re scent sensitive beware). My only complaint is that the spray isn’t a soft mist but rather a forceful stream. So, try not to spray it too close to your face otherwise you can end up wet rather than dewy as it dries down.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those Test Drives where I genuinely loved everything I tested. I definitely think the comparison between E.L.F.’s Poreless Putty Primer and Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas are greatly exaggerated—and I wanted to believe the hype. There’s just no comparison between the two, so I’m not sure who started that rumor but they need to stop spreading it. CTZN is an awesome brand for focusing on true inclusivity with a beauty niche that can be really complicated. And Face Atelier’s Face Finish is a great way to set your look. And the small size means you can easily take it with you when you’re out for the day or if you’re traveling.

My favorite base products

As a new makeup artist there are many products I love and use. I am very creative and passionate when it comes to makeup and have tried and tested lots of products to see which ones work best for me and I am going to talk through some of my very favorites and tell you why I love them.  

Starting with foundations let's begin with my everyday go to L'Oréal True Match (£9.99). This is a medium to full coverage lightweight foundation. I find it gives a dewy finish and doesn’t look cakey or feel heavy. It is very affordable which is great for students and idea for daily wear as it is non-comedogenic.

One of my other favorite foundations is Maybelline super stay (£9.99). If you want an affordable full coverage foundation that is long wearing then this is the one for you. I tend to wear this when my skin isn't at its best and I need a full coverage that will last all day.  

If you're willing to spend a bit more on your foundations, or simply want to treat yourself to a pricier one then another of my favorites is the Makeup Forever HD foundation stick (£31.00). This looks amazing on photos and has no flashback, I tend to wear this when I know there will be photos taken, it is also a very full coverage yet very dewy meaning you get the coverage without the cakeyness. 

A base isn't a base without a good concealer to hide those dark circles. I have two favorite concealers, the first being Maybelline Fit me concealer (£5.99). This concealer is full coverage yet so lightweight. I find it seamlessly melts in to the foundation, brightens and looks natural and non-cakey which is ideal for everyday wear. My other favorite concealer is Revolution Conceal and Define concealer (£4.00). Personally, I like to use this when I'm going for a more dramatic makeup look as its full coverage, brightening and great for contouring. As well as this I find it very longwearing which is great for a long day or night out.

One thing that’s a must have for me is a good setting powder. I have two main setting powders I use. The RCMA no color powder (£11.95) and the MAC studio fix powder (£26.00). I love using the RCMA no color powder for everyday wear, it is a loose translucent powder with no flashback and makes the skin look smooth. The MAC powder I will normally wear when I'm doing a fuller coverage look, as it’s a coloured pressed powder that helps add coverage over the foundation as well as setting the makeup in place.  

Finally, one of my favorite makeup products highlighter! My go to highlighter is the Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl illuminator in gilded honey. It is very pigmented and bright and a gorgeous gold colour, it looks amazing in the sun and looks great when I'm wearing tan.
