PITCH PERFECT 2012
But if you think this is just some high school club where you can sing and dance your way through any social issue, or confused sexuality, you have come to the wrong place. There is none of that here. That's high school. This shit is real life.

Okay, commit and put down your preferred run. These are your only options.
Lobdell and his two writers got lumped because I don't think you can actually separate out the three of them over those issues.
#I think I can guess how this is going to go#but interested to see the spread between my top handful#also bless Denny but I cannot see many votes for him

Quick question about how you decide what comics to care about? When it comes to characterization?
I know there’s comics that are generally considered ooc and no one really incorporates them into their characterizations. (Eg: I skimmed All Star Batman and Robin for fun. I now understand why people call him Crazy Steve, and I’m obviously not going to be taking this particular iteration of Batman and Robin into account when characterizing them.) But other than these really obvious instances, how do you deal with it? Like, I know fans of pre-N52 comics avoided a lot of stuff during that time? But now that we’re in Rebirth? I know that characterization in comic fandoms is always a bit thorny because of comic books as a medium, with all those different writers, timeline resets, etc… But you seem to have a really good handle on that, cause whenever I read any of your stuff and then read a comic, I’m usually like, yeah, same person here. Which I think is a feat! So, do you sort on vibes? Writers? Another metric? Case by case? TLDR: How do you deal when a character canonically says/does something that makes you go, “he would not fucking say that?”
Love your blog! And your writing!!!! Thank you!!!!!
ahh, crazy steve. what a guy (derogatory)
hmmmmmm for me personally if im writing a character i generally identify a “core” comic, regardless of retcons or conflicting characterisation, and then go off that. im reading a lot of bart allen atm so i focused on mark waid and todd dezago and completely ignored everything geoff johns has done with the character. for dick, scott snyder and judd winick are kinda the benchpoint for me, and then i kinda pick and choose (from wolfman, dixon, higgins, etc) what i think fits with that character. jason is easy cause he’s only had two comics worth anyone’s time. weirdly, some of roys best comics are written by devin grayson. so on and so forth.
wrt “he wouldn’t fucking say that” disease of which i am a chronic sufferer, I look back on dick (as an example) and his legacy characterisation, and whether or not it would make sense. not all legacy characterisation is good, mind!! but it’s generally easier to get a good benchmark if u go off a period when writers weren’t terminally on twitter. a lot of it is case by case, and i just map that in my brain
idk like SO much of it is just vibes and trying to create some internal consistency. like u said — there is so much conflicting characterisation and plotting and events that it can be very difficult so u just kinda have to trust ur own intuition. when i first posted persephone and got positive feedback for how i wrote dick I was kinda surprised — cause how i write him tends to clash with his popular depiction in both fandom and many modern comics. ig my real advice if ur writing (or reading) about these characters is to not fear complexity, and be conscious of exactly how racist most comic writers are.
#so sweet!!! but yeah comics can be whack#never fear conflicting characterisation !!! pick ur own adventure!!#Dick grayson#nightwing#dc comics#Batman#the ask and the answer

nightwing, for the ask game!
We are ignoring the 1995 Nightwing series for this fore the sole reason that I can remember nothing about it (terra was there in the background?). Anyway, I don't care enough to figure out how it factors into the rankings. But, without further ado:
6. Bruce Jones -- This feels like the easy one. I know some people enjoy it in a 'it's so bad it's good way' and I wish I could join them but I just did not enjoy reading it.
5. Chuck Dixon -- Yes, it was foundational and did a lot of heavy lifting in terms of building Nightwing as a solo character and there are even issues and parts I enjoyed, but a lot of it was just a slog. Reading it felt like a chore and I was skipping issues towards the end of the run (I have no desire to go back in a fill the gaps)
4. Kyle Higgins -- In terms of actual writing, I like a solid chunk of what Higgins is doing in terms of building out new52 Dick's relationship with Haley's circus and it's an engaging read. However, I'm currently biased against this coming out of Death of the Family and also the fact that he burned down Haley's Circus TWICE and had them as working for the Court of Owls.
3. Marv Wolfman -- Wolfman's Nightwing run isn't my favorite, but coming out of Jones' it was a breath of fresh air. I feel like I could
2. Devin Grayson -- I don't know how she ended up so high on this ranking, because while I am a Devin Grayson defender, her run also definitely has it's flaws. I think part of it is that I read it after Dixon's and my initial impression was 'wow, something actually readable!', part of it is a testimony to the competition, and part of it is that which she finally stopped dragging her feet on wrecking Dick's life and pulled the trigger I thought it was really engaging. I liked the build and the execution of the murder by omission (setting aside the elephant in the room). Whatever, we all know these are biased anyway.
1. Peter Tomasi -- Do I need to explain this one? Look, I agree with everyone else that this is the best post-crisis run Nightwing got.

Okay, because I’m a stubborn prat who hates losing, Nightwing readers, how is Higgins run on the character? I’m asking this as someone who hates dickbabs so I don’t want to read any comic with it in it, as someone who hates Tom Taylor’s writing, someone who hates Dixon’s everything except his writing and absolutely despises Devin Grayson. Would this be a fine one for me to read or would I just hit my head against a wall as well? Oh, also, I know it’s Dick and it’s comics, but fan service with him is really gross to me, so let me know if it’s a minimal amount of it cause I’m sure there will be some. I just really want to read a Nightwing run that I can just enjoy.
#nightwing#dick grayson#and I’m not opposed to his Batman and Robin run#but I want Nightwing not Batman#also it’s not that I don’t like Morrison I just think he’s very overhyped

do you have any recommendations for dick and jason (together or separate, both is fine) comics for someone who’s just starting to read them? i have some knowledge of the characters and batfam and i’ve read several batman comics, but i never really got into the robins-after-they-were-robins comis so i’d like to start with dick and jason…thank you so much :)
I’ll give you some recs for the both of them. Continued under the cut because this got long.
Starting with Dick. I know you said comics after they were Robins, but one of the best places to start with him would be New Teen Titans which starts off when he’s Robin. At the very least you should read Judas Contract which is the arc where he becomes Nightwing. (Also in regards to his early days as Nightwing, a lot of people will recommend Nightwing Year One. However, I think everybody is written terribly in this comic, so I suggest avoiding it.)
For his solo stuff, he has his Nightwing 1996 run. The runs are a bit of a mixed bag. Some of good, some are meh, and some are terrible. The first run is Dixon’s, which there are some problems with, but I do think it’s a good start to seeing him solo. My favorite Nightwing run was his 2011 solo written by Kyle Higgins. The only unfortunate thing there is it was trapped in New 52 continuity, and his lack of connections to the rest of the hero community felt off.
My favorite solo content of Dick’s is actually from his time as Batman, however. Snyder’s Black Mirror is one of my all time favorite comics, and Dick is the focus there.
For team stuff for Dick, aside from New Teen Titans, I’d also recommend Titans 1999. Mostly Devin Grayson’s run. It starts to decline a bit once she leaves the book. Outsiders 2003 is also really fun. You get to see Dick at his worst, since his best friend has just died and he’s making it everybody else’s problem.
Again for Jason, while you said after their time as Robin, I highly recommend reading his time as Robin if you haven’t already. I don’t think you can truly appreciate Jason’s character without knowing where he started. Aside from his appearances in Batman and Detective Comics, for Robin Jason I recommend Batman: The Cult and his time with the Titans (New Teen Titans 1984 issues 18-31. He’s not in ever single one of those issues, but that’s where his appearances can be found.)
For Red Hood you of course have to start with Under the Red Hood and Red Hood Lost Days. After that it’s a mixed bag and every Jason stan will give you a different list, or tell you that everything after that sucks. I, however, am a bit more lenient with Jason writing, so I do in fact have recs.
The first half of Red Hood and the Outlaws 2016 is some of Jason’s better writing, and I personally enjoyed it. Task Force Z also has some of the best Jason writing, and while I haven’t read Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing myself, I have heard good things about that, and it continues Rosenberg’s Jason from TFZ. One last comic I liked was the Cheer storyline from the first six issues of Batman: Urban Legends, although it was a bit more controversial of a story for some.
I thought I had more recs with the two of them together, but I find myself blanking. But I do remember enjoying Red Hood and the Outlaws vol 2 annual 1 and the Nightwing 2021 annual which both have the two of them teaming up.

What's a good Nightwing comic with good art and a good story that's worth collecting? If I were to just have one Nightwing comic, what is your recommendation of a comic line/volume to buy?
Dick, god love him, has a lot more 'just fine' comics than great comics.
My first instinct would be the Freefall storyline by Peter Tomasi (#140-146) in terms of Tomasi spins a good story and it has Rags Morales on art for the story, which is just fine. I don't entirely agree with the way Morales draws facial features but he draws perfectly reasonable comic art, rather than something stylised that is more controversial.
In terms of getting your hands on a trade, however, Freefall was collected in 2009 and then again in 2020 in Nightwing by Peter J. Tomasi, which sold out fast and hard. Having been in the market to buy this myself, I can tell you it starts at about $50USD a trade on the second hand market.
I like Chuck Dixon's work with Nightwing (#1-70 1996) and think it's essential to the character (and actually own his entire run now!). However in terms of art, over half the run was drawn by Scott McDaniel, who is an acquired taste due to cartoony style, and Greg Land did a good chunk of the remainder. Land is actually a competent artist; he just is well known for tracing and it irritates me that he relies on it when his original work is perfectly reasonable AND because he should pick different art as the basis of his tracing.
Putting all of this aside, if you pick up one trade from Dixon's run I reckon it should be Nightwing Vol 7: Shrike (#54-60) because it's a fun story, it interacts really well with Robin: Year One, and it also contains, no joke, Nightwing: Target, which is great if you need to laugh at Dick finding a way to choose the worst possible costume and hero name. It was printed in 2018 and so is still kicking around some shops, and not too difficult to find second hand.
I will always champion Kyle Higgins' n52 run, even if nobody else does; the section once he moves to Chicago (#19-30 2011) is better imo than all the Court of Owls and Halys Circus stuff earlier on. Those are collected in Second City and Setting Son; they're both reasonably priced and there are even occasional new copies still kicking around (though few and far between). Issue #29 of this run is my favourite Dick story in the entirety of the the n52.
Tim Seeley's Nightwing run (#1-34 2016): it's not my favourite but I think tonally it's the strongest section of the 2016 and it's in close conversation with Devin Grayson's run (which I have left off this list because you're not getting trades of those easily; only Mobbed Up and Renegade have been collected and of the two I'd say get Mobbed Up). The run properly picks up from issues #9-10 and the return to Bludhaven; the opening storyline is busy transferring Dick back into being Nightwing from being Agent 34, and despite being a story focused on Mary Grayson, Seeley really settles into what he wants to do from #9 where he has Dick dream talking to Tim and two different versions of Clark to find out about his other timeline connection with Bludhaven. The art is consistently good on these; it includes Javi Fernandez, Marcus To and Minkyu Jung.
If you like Dick and Damian together, you probably want Nightwing Must Die; otherwise I'd suggest Back to Bludhaven (this will give you the To art) or Blockbuster if you want to see Dick rediscovering why Bludhaven is HIS city.
I have a soft spot for Benjamin Percy's The Bleeding Edge (#44-47 2016) and the racing story following it, but I also know people are going to come for me over the Dick characterisation in it, which leans into Dick Grayson, the Luddite for details. Also it has Chris Mooneyham on art and he varies between 'fun' and 'my eyes started bleeding' for me.
Can't give you advice beyond Nightwing #61 2016 so far, sorry, which is deep into Ric territory. So I can't help you with where the best bits of Tom Taylor's run are.
